The best thing I've ever heard said about Dungeon Meshi is that it isn't a cooking anime, it's an eating anime. And as a manga reader, it's scary just how right that statement is.
@@RED_XLR they do, but cooking is only one part of the process of eating. DM is not limited to cooking (you'll know what I mean if you read through the manga)
One thing this manga has over Frieren and Witch Hat Atelier: It has an actual ending. For real, it cannot be understated how amazing it is for a manga, or anime, or any piece of media including video games nowadays, to have an actual fully realized ending that doesn't involve an axe.
Even better, the ending sticks the landing. I was both sad and excited that the series was ending. Sad, because I enjoyed it so much and wanted more. Excited, because it looked like it was going to end well. There isn't a lot of really anything that has satisfying endings.
This. It's the only long series manga ending I've ever read that felt right. From start to finish, you know the author gave alot of thought on how the story would build up to a finale to end. Many mangas I won't name just improvise after a certain point.
dungeon meshi is so so so detailed, but the pacing is also efficient and satisfying. the details ryoko kui thought of but dont need to show in the story, she gracefully puts aside to publish as extras instead. nothing overstays their welcome and even then there is so much subtle storytelling beneath the main plot that they dont need any filler eps. the fact that the mangaka refuses anime adaptation until the series nears the ending is a contributing factor too
I've read the manga and no spoilers, only vibes: Ryoko Kui's work genuinely reminds me of Terry Pratchett's works in the best of ways. It's funny, it's tongue-and-cheek, it's goofy, but it's incredibly visceral and heartfelt and it deeply resonates with me as an autistic reader, and you can really tell just how much she loves *people* and those messy, wonderful, complicated connections they can make. I'm so glad more people are getting to experience it.
I’ve been thinking about getting my parents to watch Dungeon Meshi with me, but I’ve been a bit on the fence about it, but you describing it as Terry-Pratchett-Like is giving me more motivation to actually ask, since my dad in particular is a huge fan of Pratchett! I am looking forward to what’s to come!
THAT'S IT! That's the vibe I was getting! Pratchett, yes! Also Laios is clearly on the spectrum. I was confused by people who said he didn't have empathy, he clearly does, but now I understand why it's not obvious to some people.
@@Rutabega_NG He definitely displays it in unconventional ways from a neurotypical perspective, from what I've gathered. His love language is acts of service and action. Spoilers for the anime only folks who haven't made it past the frogs and the tentacles yet: One of his clearest displays of empathy is when he is hyping himself into sacrificing his leg in order to get access to the dragon's weakspot. "It'll be over fast. It's nothing big. Not compared to Falin's pain." is the exact quote from the official English manga translation, but that's the whole reason he started eating the monsters and basically speedran the dungeon. A deep and profound empathy and love that required he pushed himself beyond his limits and took care of himself so that he could keep it up. It's why he has a pretty good amount of bodyfat still and is well hydrated, while Shuro looks like total shit by the time they get to their brawl. Laios saw the mistake that got his sister killed, which was fatigue and malnutrition, and made sure he would NEVER make that mistake again.
@@Rutabega_NG Oh, the part I mentioned is in the anime! I just didn't recall which episode, if you're caught up on the anime it's not a spoiler. Otherwise, have fun when you get to it!
One thing that stuck out to me throughout the whole show is how the story actually punishes the characters for their flaws. This is very apparent with Liaos in Episodes 6 and 13 as his ignorance of the Mad Mage is what losses him Falin a second time. 😢 This show has some really grounded, well written characters.
Learning that the Manga is about EATING not COOKING made it raise to the top in my charts. "Eating" is a universal experience for all lifeforms, a thing that ties us all together and tears us apart, literally. Foreshadowing is all over the place, hints are placed all around, explained but not deeper looked at until you notice how it connects later and how its done is AMAZING, ABSOLUTE GENIUS, TOTAL MASTERCLASS. That Manga & Anime is a must read & see.
I dunno sounds a bit of a tomato/tomato thing, in this case xD DM is about alimentation and its aspects, and a side of it is making the best out of the ingredients you have to make your mind and body better. So it IS a cooking anime/manga, it's just different from other sport-style ones like the usual known ones, like Foodgasm no Soma or Made in Ab- oh wait no that's another matter ^^
At first I thought “oh cool another wholesome anime to heal up” and as continued to watch I start to pick up the plot and was “ oh no it’s going to get dark soon and I luv it “
Something I find interesting about Marcille is her design and how it, in a way, spoils a later twist, same for hints dropped in the background of her dream in the most recent episode
Early on the depth is hidden in details, masked by the comedy. And as you said, the comedy is very intelligently interwoven into the characters, making them more relatable. But, most crucially, as the hidden depths begin to slowly surface, the comedy becomes tied closely into the drama and horror. And that I think is the key to Delicious in Dungeon. The balance of comedy and genuine drama and horror is impeccable, making the characters more believable and relatable, and keeping the entire story grounded. Instead of losing itself to the pursuit of ultimate epicness or horror, this series manages the amazing task of keeping everything close, personal, and most of all, believable throughout by never forgetting other aspects of its characters. Thus, the comedy actually makes the drama more dramatic. And that is what makes a good, delicious, balanced meal.

im pretty sure netflix only has distribution and localization rights for dungeon meshi, they probably arent that involved in its actual production. netflix just likes to slap their "original series" logo on anything they have sole distribution rights to, but dungeon meshi is being aired on normal tv at least inside japan, so another season should be able to happen whether netflix approves it or not. luckily if they do have any say, the manga isnt really that long. one more season of the same length (24 episodes) should be enough to complete it

The secret of the dungeon is one of the best twists I've ever read in fantasy and still gives me chills YOU. WILL. NOT. BE. DISSAPPOINTED.

@@RegstarRogstar I agree with you. As a manga about characters, they seem pretty lacking of substance. I was asking myself why I wasn't enjoying Frieren as much as everyone and you pointed the right thing. I also agree with you for DM side characters, they seem to each have there own ticks, personnality and even charadesign that is more plausible in real life than in anime tropes. The show's focus on adventure is based on how much the director loves the manga and how much Kui loves western fantasy. Kui also loves drawing just as much as she loves food and fantasy. She planned out a whole fantasy world with different countries, how they interact, the different races that show up, the ways their societies function, etc. She's a true creative in the genre. I'm just gonna say, what Tolkien did for literative fantasy is close to what Ryoko Kui's doing for anime fantasy. She has 4 books full of reference sketches and notes about how modern fashion would work with every fantasy race. She includes rough sketches of every new idea she had in every volume released. The production is all very Tolkien-esque, with all the appendices, notes, and artwork that would never see the light of day anywhere else.
It is interesting to see how others experience this story. I love the humor in it, and I think that certain (yet to be seen) comedy bits are the most memorable moments of the story to me. I love the story and plot as well, but as we get further into the adaptation, this will probably be my favorite show under the comedy genre.
Frieren, Dungeon Meshi and Witch Hat Atelier definitely saved the fantasy genre in anime/manga for me and I'm glad I wasn't the only one who thinks so!
I strongly recommend anime-only to read the manga after the anime ends. Ryoko kui adds an extreme amount of world and character building in side content, and alot of context dialogue is missing in the anime.
This work is very good, I've read it all, but I hadn't noticed a detail in Marcille's dream, which I noticed in this ep with the ''book'' and ''imaginary pet'' by laios, the author is brilliant

As someone who has been reading the manga for years and trying to get all of my friends to read it as well its very satisfying seeing the anime blow up like this.
One of the reactors I follow had reacted to Dungeon Meshi so I figured what the heck, I'll give it a look. Netflix had four episodes at that point. They weren't earth-shattering but they were fun. Seemed like a good contrast for Solo Leveling, so I kept watching. That was one of the best viewing decisions I've made. I'm already reading three manga (One Piece, Solo Leveling, Kaiju #8) so I don't really have the space to add a 4th, but after tonight's episode, I might drop Solo Leveling and pick this one up.
the manga for dungeon meshi is definitely worth a read as theres tons of world building and character moments that only gets seen in bonus chapters, which the anime isnt covering. theres also an entire lore book called the adventurer's bible which i highly recommended checking out after you've completed the manga as it has some spoilers. the world and characters are extremely well thought out and so much of it barely even gets touched on within the main story. theres just so much information about the world that it feels like a place where an unlimited number of stories could take place. honestly it would make for a really fantastic ttrpg setting, which makes sense cause the author literally read through d&d handbooks for inspiration for dungeon meshi lol
Such a beautifully created video! Loved every bit of it! Just finished Dungeon Meshi and came to find your video. I wholeheartedly love this anime and will eagerly wait for the 2nd season.
This has become one of my favorite shows this year I try to always eat something while watching it, although on certain episodes you can’t eat while watching 😅
I watched the first 2 airing and decided to binge later, since i tought it wouldnt go anywhere that the sister being eaten would be a side quest. But oh i was wrong. Its not a cooking show its an EATING SHOW
I think I saw this all over my tumblr dash before starting it, and Senshi's English VA, Sungwon Cho (ProZD), is why I caved and started watching. I watched the first episode (I think four episodes total had released), got hooked, and immediately binged the manga. I'm so excited for the rest of the anime and seeing more scenes brought to life. So far episode 17 has been my favorite, and I'm incredibly excited to see how they adapt certain things.
This is the first video I watch from you, but definitely not the last if they're all like this! The way you speak really grabs my attention and won't let go. It's hard to explain exactly why, but watching this video made me feel content. Keep it up, dude!
I love this series! It's the perfect combo of fantasy, comedy, but also seriousness. It reminds me of The Slayers, which I also loved. I wish there were more series like this!
I was so worried at the first ep cause i was kinda confused at the tone and so many people had been praising it and so i was so worried i wouldnt like it but now im obsessed and so happy watching it every thursday
I watched frieren first and was captivated by the strong opening episode. Meanwhile dungeon meshis more slower slice of life beginning. I didnt get what was so good about it i thought it was just a fun good time. However i finally got round to watching it then reading the manga and i have already finished the frieren anime and caught up to the manga. And dungeon meshi is way better. I feel like the opposite happens frieren had a strong start then it mellows out as it goes on its still good though but i lose my interest at times. Dungeon meshi starts so slow but as soon as the show starts showing its true colors its straight gas to the very end. And it actually has an ending and a fantastic one too. When the anime comminity lamenting over aot mha and now jjks questionable endings. Thats why even when i liked frieren at it best i can never agree its the no. 1 anime or good manga. It needs to prove itself with a fantastic satiafactory ending first. It could very well end badly or questionably in the end. Also frieren is about the characters but i feel like dungeon meshi handles the characrers as good and sometimew even better than frieren whilst still pumping out the plot developments that does. Its a special show and if it took the no. 1 spot on myanimelist instead of frieren knowing its ending i would prefer that. The world building of dungeon meshi is leagues better than frierens too its a smaller world that the story is told in but i like when authors dont try to bite off more than it can chew (pun not intended) and just focus on midmaxing the world buulding with a smaller contained setting and satisfavtory necessary glimpses into stuff outside that too.
I'm SO happy you like it, I blasted through the manga after the first handful of episodes came out, and it doesn't disappoint!!!! I hope you enjoy the ride when the anime starts releasing again! ❤
I am an elder weeb, and this is one of the few newer anime I have enjoyed because of it its story. I love good stories, and so many anime do more action over story, and I enjoy the more story driven anime.
This anime is like my beard: I first thought it looked weird and not for me, yet soon, it grew on me so much that I cannot imagine being without it) I'm reading the manga nowadays, and it's the best thing since Fujimoto's Firepunch and Chainsaw Man I've read. It's so fucking good! Its character designs and body types, its worldbuilding and creative spins to the fantasy tropes, the story, character development, and occasional dwarven crotch - everything's memorable and worthy of your attention!
Honestly, Dungeon Meshi and Frieren fell into my world by the fandom, shoutout to the fans who really propel these incredible stories and characters. And shoutout to you for putting this video together! I just finished the manga a couple weeks ago after the anime cliff hangers kept pissing me off-- your analysis is spot on. Can't wait to see how Trigger animates this masterpiece of a series.
I highly agree the beginning is kind of bland, however that all turned around during the living armor scene. Such a great sequence! The craziest thing was that even though the armor is…just armor it had so much personality and charisma. The way the sets of armor moved and reacted to the party was so…scary. I loved it!
I look forward to Marcille's hangover being animated. Because WOW, does she have the worst morning ever! (That is also full of hype.) And then there is that curry centric...mood whiplash. 😱

Dungeon Meshi has become my cozy anime. I've been anticipating the next episodes while also holding off on reading the manga. I've always dropped the anime once I've read the manga/novel, but I want to watch this anime on its own, I love it.
i am glad that someone like you is doing a video on dungeon mesh we all know for sure and experience it already how amazing this show is .. however even tho there is a good fan base to the series but still, it didn't get the recognition that it deserves yet in the anime community at lest ... we need to tell everyone about how good this show is :D
Dungeon meshi gos from happy go lucky show about food, to dark and super gritty almost geopolitical, then back to food, then high level lovcraftian horror and then finally back to food
I was avoiding this one because it's a Slice-Of-Life but you've convinced Me to give it a whirl. I had the same attitude for Frieren & ended up loving that.😅
On Falin having a darker side to her, I think you'll like the upcoming flashbacks that feature her if you want to see that side of her It's not a huge revelating either i think but it's really nice to develop her and go beyond the image of the stereotypical woman in danger who's so sweet and can do no wrong
Eldlich being is trying to bleach the border between dungeon and earth,to harvest every human and make them his eternal lunch box. Sounds cosmic horror.
Omg I can’t wait for next episode my favorite character should show up in there unfortunately I will have to wait for second season for most of my favorite scenes to get adapted but will be worth it it’s so great and it only gets better the further you go can’t wait for anime watchers to experience this amazing story
It has biblical elements too that's why i was intrigued and hooked to watch and read the manga. One example (spoiler alert) is the tower with staircases is very similar to the Tower of Babel. The Red Dragon and Winged Lion reminds me of the Seven Headed Dragon and Six winged lion in the Book of Revelation.

Laios got that dog in him
Recap of the anime in 5 word's. Fear and hunger plus food
I'm already reading three manga (One Piece, Solo Leveling, Kaiju #8) so I don't really have the space to add a 4th, but after tonight's episode, I might drop Solo Leveling and pick this one up.
good choice, solo leveling is pretty terrible. trust me as someone who has read the whole novel.
Well now you have made a wise decision
Dungeon Meshi manga is finished and reached in my opinion well written satisfying ending.
the manga for dungeon meshi is definitely worth a read as theres tons of world building and character moments that only gets seen in bonus chapters, which the anime isnt covering. theres also an entire lore book called the adventurer's bible which i highly recommended checking out after you've completed the manga as it has some spoilers.
the world and characters are extremely well thought out and so much of it barely even gets touched on within the main story. theres just so much information about the world that it feels like a place where an unlimited number of stories could take place. honestly it would make for a really fantastic ttrpg setting, which makes sense cause the author literally read through d&d handbooks for inspiration for dungeon meshi lol
Good choice, Dungeon Meshi is finished, and it's got excellent ending which is really hard to find nowadays.
dungeon meshi,oh dungeon meshi
Love this channel and the format
Such a beautifully created video! Loved every bit of it! Just finished Dungeon Meshi and came to find your video. I wholeheartedly love this anime and will eagerly wait for the 2nd season.
Freiren is currently on indefinite hiatus now. 😢
Don’t remind me 😭
This has become one of my favorite shows this year I try to always eat something while watching it, although on certain episodes you can’t eat while watching 😅
ive let it cook and im stuffed wanting for more, season 2 confirmed baby
Dungeon meshi ❌
Fear and hunger ✅
I watched the first 2 airing and decided to binge later, since i tought it wouldnt go anywhere that the sister being eaten would be a side quest. But oh i was wrong.
Its not a cooking show its an EATING SHOW
9:46, 100% agree.
Can't even imagine any other studio making this in such a p-e-r-f-e-c-t way as Trigger does.
Thanks for the support!
Another thing i love is believable power level & power level disparity. Also extraordinarily problem requires extraordinary solution.
I love how it’s gets better over time ❤ the first few episodes had problems that were fixed so good there some of my favorite aspects
Oh I reaaally like the distinction between ‘action’ and ‘adventure’. Great video!
I loved it!
Great analysis, man! Thanks.
I look forward to Marcille's hangover being animated. Because WOW, does she have the worst morning ever! (That is also full of hype.)
And then there is that curry centric...mood whiplash. 😱
Bro love your Ramen hair.
Dungeon Meshi is the plot for my perfect video game
Great work, bro.... I enjoyed this video... I will have to browse around your past works and subscribe.
You should have more viewers..... mabey try shorts or lame ass community comments to hook people up with new shows with visual eye candy ... who knows?. ( i always go to the main channel from the comments with impressive frames to get the name and reviews)
Dungeon Meshi has become my cozy anime. I've been anticipating the next episodes while also holding off on reading the manga. I've always dropped the anime once I've read the manga/novel, but I want to watch this anime on its own, I love it.
first time watching you and i really like the editing and your diff camera angles lolol, nice video!!
i am glad that someone like you is doing a video on dungeon mesh we all know for sure and experience it already how amazing this show is .. however even tho there is a good fan base to the series but still, it didn't get the recognition that it deserves yet in the anime community at lest ... we need to tell everyone about how good this show is :D
Dungeon meshi gos from happy go lucky show about food, to dark and super gritty almost geopolitical, then back to food, then high level lovcraftian horror and then finally back to food
This man COOKED with this video! 🧑🍳 Cool hair btw. Couldn't stop staring at it 🤩
Thanks!!!
Hands down the best fantasy manga i have ever read, the characters and world buliding are just genius.
First time watching your channel, I enjoyed it a lot. Keep it up B!
At first it start like comedy, and then it went Berserk.
this year we got frieren and delicious in dungeon. Already one of the best year.
I was avoiding this one because it's a Slice-Of-Life but you've convinced Me to give it a whirl. I had the same attitude for Frieren & ended up loving that.😅
On Falin having a darker side to her, I think you'll like the upcoming flashbacks that feature her if you want to see that side of her
It's not a huge revelating either i think but it's really nice to develop her and go beyond the image of the stereotypical woman in danger who's so sweet and can do no wrong
Her weapon of choice is a mace :D
Great video, watching because my sister is obsessed. 😮💨 You got a point!
Solid solid videos, I love them bro
This video is so well edited
This manga became fear and hunger at the middle to the end
who else is here for senshi fan service?
Eldlich being is trying to bleach the border between dungeon and earth,to harvest every human and make them his eternal lunch box.
Sounds cosmic horror.
At the end of the manga, (near the end), they conclude that the point of their adventure was to accept death.
Its also "other world" speculation work of art. How the ecosystem works, the food chain and so much more.
God you video is so good subs right away
After re watched the second trailer , I pretty much know where season 1 will ends , so guys be ready for some heart touching moment and laughing lol
Looking forward to a post-Izutsumi video.
The funiest thing for me was when Laios saved the party from hard spots just by being a huge Dungeon nerd. Man and Elf Senshi was peak manga/anime.
The living painting episode reminds me of the narnia episode on rick and morty with hoovey and his descendants
Omg I can’t wait for next episode my favorite character should show up in there
unfortunately I will have to wait for second season for most of my favorite scenes to get adapted but will be worth it
it’s so great and it only gets better the further you go can’t wait for anime watchers to experience this amazing story
It's becoming my favorite fantasy anime of all time behind Record of Lodoss War.
1 your hair is really cool 2 you’re absolutely right
I’m on episode 3 of this anime. Can’t wait to finish it
In a sense, this anime has a lot in common with Made in Abyss.
You know a manga is going to be popular and great when 4chan loves it years before anyone else knows about it.
Dungeon meshi, OHHH dungeon meshi
It has biblical elements too that's why i was intrigued and hooked to watch and read the manga. One example (spoiler alert) is the tower with staircases is very similar to the Tower of Babel. The Red Dragon and Winged Lion reminds me of the Seven Headed Dragon and Six winged lion in the Book of Revelation.
