I bought all the english volumes available at the time, and when the anime was announced I knew that I'd watch every episode. Like you said, the transition to anime was incredible, between the cinema quality of the visuals and Evan Call's music it became even more than the manga. I'll be honest and admit there were many scenes that brought me to tears, some of them in a good way 😁 Knowing there's a second season coming has given me a reason to look forward to the release date. As long as it's not "a mere 10+ years from now" of course... 😂
@@mookiestewart3776 Thanks, I've actually been an anime watcher since the original Astro Boy and Speed Racer that came out in the 60's, when I was little! There's always been something about how the Japanese creators tell stories, and we've been blessed with an embarrassment of riches these past few years, there's more good anime and manga than we can easily watch!
So glad you shouted out the director there. Between turning a 4koma into the insane masterpiece that is Bocchi and now taking an already-amazing manga and elevating it like he has... just in awe of this man's skills.
Indeed. He's directed two shows and they both became megahits. He's looking out to be one of the next big names to watch out for. His success with Frieren proves what happened with Bocchi wasn't a fluke.
I read somewhere that originally the mangaka originally wanted a COMEDY manga about an elf who loves to kill demons. In that sense, we did get that and SO MUCH MORE. And if you ask me, the reason Frieren could relate to anyone is because of the lessons we learn from it. Be nice to others, treat them the way you want to be treated. One small act of kindness can change someone's life. Keep moving on despite what life throws at you. Cherish your loved ones while you still can. Learn to listen and understand others. Time is the greatest and most precious thing you can spend for someone.
I just started watching the anime because of its really unusual starting point: after the final victory, what else? I was just pierced by a zoltraak of emotions and wonderment. Now the manga is sitting on my library
Being a good ANIME and STORY will do that. The fact it was a good story that hit so many genera and did it well was what makes the anime and manga a masterclass and likely a classic.
I started Frieren on a whim but holy shit has it become one of my favorite anime of all time! I’ve watched it twice now and I’d be comfortable saying this is my favorite fantasy story I’ve ever experienced
It didn't only united the anime community it united the people who never watch anime, they watch Cyberpunk, Castlevania and Avatar but not Japanese anime in general but they will watch Frieren, also seen a lot of LOTR fans going nuts about it too
Frieren is actually quite in line with Tolkien's ideology, particularly when it comes to nature and the things that truly matter. Sure, he might disagree with some of the religious ideas presented here, but the overall theme and tone is quite similar to his own writings.
@@Kureemy i also recommend Highlander (just the first movie), it's not LotR but it is also about immortality and the first half is comparable to the first half of Frieren
I think that credit goes to the Flashbacks and how they're used, too. Because holy hell does Frieren do Flashbacks incredibly well. I usually detest Flashbacks because they take away from the story or just drag down the pace... But then comes Frieren. Mid fight Flashbacks? Not a problem because immediately after the pace KICKS UP and immediately we arrive at the fight's resolution; a resolution made even more logical because the Flashback established that, well... It's the only logical conclusion it could have because she's trained or encountered a similar situation before and it was solved, too. Frieren doesn't need to have tense fights, even if it does. It's stakes aren't world-ending, they're not groundbreaking; the story itself is centered around how Frieren is simply going back on an Adventure to finish her initial one - to conclude her adventure and finish what she should've done from the start. Her journey is for Himmel and discovering who he was and what she knew about him. Edit: And, more than absolutely everything else.... There's no constant yelling or over-the-top-overblown-extreme-screams-for-no-reason. Characters are logical, relatable and emulate their emotions by little actions or smiles or eye rolls, etc. It's just incredible. I'm so sick of things like Black Clover where there's just constant yelling. Hearing Frieren just go : "Zoltraak." Instead of going "ZOOOOOOOOLTRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" is so REFRESHING.
Before like months the anime even aired, I bought the first volume to understand why this story was so acclaimed on the web, after I read it I find it a little overrated for the concept and premise of the series. After a while then I bought also the other 9 volumes that were available at the time, and I've fallen in love with it... the art of Tsukasa Abe and the story of Kanehito Yamada are beyond perfection, every character have its flaws and reasons for their own actions. It's the best fantasy I've read at all! The anime also literally made a whole masterpiece for how good and passionate the adaptation was. I can't wait for season 2 that has, for now, the best arc ever.
I love that we get all these beloved side characters throughout the series and, despite Frieren spending months or weeks with them, they just say a quick goodbye and move one. A lesser series would've confronted this with an explosion of emotion and melodrama, but we already had that in episode one. So what now? True to the series, Frieren internalizes it and fondly quotes Himmel. "It would be embarrassing when we met again."
I dont know how you missed it but Frieren doesn't have a bad sleeping schedule, we learn in one of the episodes that describes her past that when learning how to hide her magic it used to really exhaust her, so she sleeps a lot to regain that energy
Everything about this video is FANTASTIC, from the character analyses to highlighting the lesser discussed quirks that make Frieren tick (also the weirdly apt gintama comparison). But most of all, I don’t think people appreciate enough how amazing the direction of your videos is. Also I spy a familiar video in the naysayer section 😮💨
Another excellent video. It's very hard to pick a favourite character because they're all so good. But i guess it's Frieren herself for me. I wanna be like her, completely comfortable in her own skin
What I remember most fondly is right at the start. At the end of the very first episode. Himmel, Heiter, Eisen and Frieren sat on the mountain top, watching the meteor shower. That moment is when I knew I was watching something special. Everything afterward just solidified my initial thoughts about the show. The fact it didn't have a vengeance plot, there was no sudden evil.guy to kill.off the friends and send Frieren off on a quest for revenge... it was a quiet farewell to a friend she hadn't seen for 50 years, and an impetus to learn more about humans, because she was seriously lacking that knowledge while Himmel was still alive.
I love the main cast and their dynamics, but I love Himmel the most. He’s not talked about here, but he grabs your heart when you watch the anime. (Spoiler alert!) I probably love Himmel because I’m someone who likes romantic anime. Although he has many amazing qualities, the one I admire the most is his undying love for Frieren, which carried on even when she was gone for 50 years ;-; And of course, the part in which he gave Frieren the ring was my most favorite.
Just cause it's not in a medieval setting doesn't mean it's not fantasy, ATLA is one of the best pieces of fantasy ever made, so is Frieren, they both have a place and so does demon slayer
You know anime and source material are masterpieces when some episodes feels like 5 min and other like an hour, in a good way, and leave you with a Frieren sized hole in you soul afterwards. Also making character WHO IS ALREADY DEAD AND GONE and "only" appearing in retrospectives and actions of other characters our most favorite and most impactful one. "Fake" Hero best hero.
I love Frieren, but I think Fern is my favorite character. It was the single sidestep she did while walking towards Lügner. If you don’t remember this then I don’t know what to tell you. You blinked

It takes first-tier writing, directing, voice acting, and everything else to pull that off.

I'm just waiting for that laundry spell to save the day. It's been established that even the simplest spells can change the course of history. Case in point: That spell conjuring a field of flowers? That inspired a kid Himmel to be a hero.
Frieren definitivamente puso a Keichiro Saito en la cúspide de la industria y la historia del anime, y su carrera apenas está comenzando, no puedo ni imaginar de lo que es lo que es capaz este hombre con el equipo y los recursos adecuados.
Well made mang. Agreed on Anime vs. Manga - it's hard to beat all it can add, especially Music for me and well, Animation! Fav char has to go out to Fern. She can be as complex as Frieren but has the cutest little pouty faces as Gigguk put it "makes you want to go ooga booga booga." Anya Forger grownup edition. Fantastic review, and absolutely spot-on comments. Best Manga-to-Anime adaptation I have ever seen. All 28 episodes are keepers, and yes, it's the characters. Every character who appears has flaws, regrets, emotional turmoil in their lives, and how they work upstream to correct some of their own history. Take the lead, Frieren. Graf Granat offers to let them stay with him as long as she likes. But instead she takes her team of Fern and Stark into the Schwer Mountains with Winter coming on, all the time lecturing them about how the Winter weather was so dangerous and then gets caught in an early deadly Winter Blizzard. But all the characters make these kinds of human mistakes which makes them just the more attractive. Also I have tried to find information on the author, Kanehito Yamada, and I cannot find anything in English. Some English reviewers even think that the author is a she. Apparently the author is very private. Great youtube channel, I now subscrive.
I believe I am biased in that I have always adored Slice of life animes. Even when I watched Naruto back in the early 2000s I adored the more calm moments rather than the fights. More recently I enjoyed the hell out of Reincarnation of a bookworm for the exact same reasons.. but that show is genuinely 99% slice of life and in practice barely any fighting. With that all said.. I believe one of my favorite characters aside from main ones would ve Denken.
Could a fellow Friern fan do me a favor and remind me what episode has the flashback of Himmel and Eisen talking about they're scared to fight their first dragon?
I think it's the beginning of episode 19, when Kanne and Lawine are sleeping during the night and Frieren is with them and she reminisces how the bonds are different from party to party. Hope that helps :]
Frieren is my favourite of the year and odd of me to say but think it even beats RE:zero down a few notches in my likes. If you want to go way odd for second would be Gushing over Magical Girls. One of the great things for me with this is Frieren does not dominate every aspect of the anime.. oh and spoiler Aura Kill yourself has to be one of the best done lines in anime.
Frieren subverts expectations from the moment she starts talking because she speaks in plain Japanese using colloquialisms (normal words) instead of being some kinda fancy-mouthed elf in a high fantasy setting.
Frieren is PEAK anime and in my opinion its not because of its STORY. Sure story is really good but not best ever. Music is again not best ever, but perfect for the story. Universe is one flavour of the hundrets fantasy setting we have seen, but made with enough care to make us the viewer buy into it. Not even a single character is oustanding (exept Himmel, he is one of one) but again the show takes great time and care into their development. Animation however is as good as it can get, but then again we have seen such qualitry and care before - give any creative animator enough resoures and they can achive this. I am trying to say none of Frierens individual pieces are special, but the way they were put together, the way the show is directed abolutely is. Much like Fern was shown by Frierens clone what the heigh of magic looks like, the shows director Sawako Takagi used his own magic to show us a glimps of what peak anime is like.
Wow. Another Fantasy anime to be beaten by my favorite fantasy anime Demon Slayer for the 2024 FAOTY awards. 😂 Jk. Hopefully season 2 will be released asap. Can't wait for it. Great video without spoiling major events!
Honestly I think the anime community was just starved for a good old fashioned adventure story where there is no big evil final boss, just the journey in itself having a meaning. And Frieren satisfies that itch. But it wasn't the best anime of its season, that goes to Kusuriya no Hitorigoto in my opinion. That anime has a better overall plot and better grasp on the characters as well.
While Frieren is not like HxH in any way, both manga terrifies me as I enter into each main story arc.... because like HxH, shit can happen to any character no matter how popular. There is real dire consequences, not the BS threats like in American superhero comics. I love the story too much to stop at the manga at this point, but I deeply wish I hadn't known anything beyond the end of the anime when Season 2 finally hits (whenever that may be). I suppose I should at least count myself fortunate for going into Season 1 blind (except for the premise).
I loved the video, but please don't use whatever tool is smearing and ruining the frame rate on some of the clips you used. specifically the ones at 10:44 and 2:17 (the one with the red hair guy) are the most egregious. Sorry, but ever since someone showed me the difference it really pulls me away and looks much worse than just having less fps. I would recommend noodle's video about 'smoother animation not equal better animation' if you want to be ruined forever.
I like to think that Frieren shouldn't be anybody's favorite. There is an action anime better, or a slice of life better (to name some genres), but it's good enough to to potentially be in everybody's top 10.
Manifesting Season 2!🙏🏽

Fern really is an amazing character.
I'm just waiting for that laundry spell to save the day. It's been established that even the simplest spells can change the course of history. Case in point: That spell conjuring a field of flowers? That inspired a kid Himmel to be a hero.
Literally subbed as soon as you said "Chihayafuru... *eghehm" video coming soon"
i hope it gets a jjk season 2 and not a Opm season 2
Frieren definitivamente puso a Keichiro Saito en la cúspide de la industria y la historia del anime, y su carrera apenas está comenzando, no puedo ni imaginar de lo que es lo que es capaz este hombre con el equipo y los recursos adecuados.
Frieran is peak
You didn't mention the real protagonist himmel the hero. Bro hits hard in his flashbacks like naruto's swinging bench.
All in all Frieren was a wonderful journey and the fact that it could topple FMA: Brotherhood is an achievement in itself (though FMA always best in my

Sorry a slight pet peeve of mine because the reader of Overlord audiobooks says 'especially' as 'ex-specially'
Funnily enough they also voice Eisen ^^
Great youtube channel, I now subscrive.
its beautiful, it really is
It also has a banger OP in OP2.
8:06 I'm currently watching at 4am I can relate too
Dude, really good video!
Perfect review, bro. Perfect.
so in short, this shjt is peak 😀
I agree wit you.
my top anime MC currently is actually a tie between frieren and maomao
I believe I am biased in that I have always adored Slice of life animes. Even when I watched Naruto back in the early 2000s I adored the more calm moments rather than the fights. More recently I enjoyed the hell out of Reincarnation of a bookworm for the exact same reasons.. but that show is genuinely 99% slice of life and in practice barely any fighting.
With that all said.. I believe one of my favorite characters aside from main ones would ve Denken.
Liked because you referenced World Trigger.

Great video, dude 👌

Could a fellow Friern fan do me a favor and remind me what episode has the flashback of Himmel and Eisen talking about they're scared to fight their first dragon?
I think it's the beginning of episode 19, when Kanne and Lawine are sleeping during the night and Frieren is with them and she reminisces how the bonds are different from party to party. Hope that helps :]
@@alexc1 Thank you!
Episode 6
When Frieren sees stark's hands shaking she remembers Eisen and Himmel conversation
@@James--Parker Glad I could help 😁
first time i heard the opening song in english
this was good
Frieren is my favourite of the year and odd of me to say but think it even beats RE:zero down a few notches in my likes. If you want to go way odd for second would be Gushing over Magical Girls. One of the great things for me with this is Frieren does not dominate every aspect of the anime.. oh and spoiler Aura Kill yourself has to be one of the best done lines in anime.
Mimik ist best character ❤
Jk.
Frieren would never survive our world. Gotcha would RUIN her
me being here proves it will break the normie barrier soon
While Frieren is not like HxH in any way, both manga terrifies me as I enter into each main story arc.... because like HxH, shit can happen to any character no matter how popular. There is real dire consequences, not the BS threats like in American superhero comics. I love the story too much to stop at the manga at this point, but I deeply wish I hadn't known anything beyond the end of the anime when Season 2 finally hits (whenever that may be). I suppose I should at least count myself fortunate for going into Season 1 blind (except for the premise).
12:05 why you calling a brotha out like this MAN
I loved the video, but please don't use whatever tool is smearing and ruining the frame rate on some of the clips you used.
specifically the ones at 10:44 and 2:17 (the one with the red hair guy) are the most egregious.
Sorry, but ever since someone showed me the difference it really pulls me away and looks much worse than just having less fps.
I would recommend noodle's video about 'smoother animation not equal better animation' if you want to be ruined forever.
0:43 what anime is this?
Wind Breaker
@@elifia thank you
I like to think that Frieren shouldn't be anybody's favorite. There is an action anime better, or a slice of life better (to name some genres), but it's good enough to to potentially be in everybody's top 10.
i got dizzy watching this video with its editing and camera movement 😢
2 min and you get a sub.
