This series has to be the biggest surprise on the up-side for me for summer 2024 anime. Usually, I don't care much for romance anime (and in a sense this show isn't one), but this show actually drew me in with fully formed characters, understandable motivations (even if not always relatable), and avoiding the tropes from overly-fabricated situations. By the halfway point, this ended up on the top of my list for this season and stayed there. (My other surprises from all shows this season came from the very under-appreciated *My Senpai is an Otonokoto*, and the insidious *No Longer Allowed in Another World*).

I pronounced Makeine Ma-ke-i-ne until the 10th episode came out, only to realise I’d been saying it wrong the whole time. Makeine comes from the Japanese word 'Make Heroine' (Losing Heroine), and the katakana for the show's name is マケイン (Make-In). The romanised version adds the 'e' for some reason, which caused me to mispronounce it.

Lemon is one of the best Tomboy characters of all time (losing ones, at least). I'm open to suggestions of better ones to watch. Tomo-chan is a Winner (also a Girl) so she doesn't count.

It's interesting how this is a reverse trope that focuses on what happens to the rejected FMC (usually Childhood friend) instead of the MC and the winning FMC. This would be equivalent to a reversal of the prominent Actually OP Support Character Exiled from the Hero Party for Being Too Weak trope if shown from the side of the Hero party with their self-inflicted misfortunes and regrets as the focus of the story.

I'd argue that it's not that the characters aren't stupid. They're all stupid, but they're also all intelligent, just like normal humans.

Nukumizu seemed to act like a proxy for the audience-the witness to the story, taking actions an audience would wish to take, and even making snide comments (especially toward Anna, e.g. his Sea Otter theory of relationships). This role lasted almost until the very end of the season, and only as long as he didn't actually get romantically involved with anyone.

Best slice of life romcom anime of the year. Great analysis. Love this show.

I have a feeling the first season is just showing the struggles of the losing heroines and how the Mc is helping them, and then season 2 is when the said losing heroins will start having feeling for him.

I love the series so much more than I thought I would. Heartache, and pining, and finding new love. All my romances over the years were slow burn getting to know someone. When I met my wife it was an instant attraction but it took 2 years of getting to know her for her to fall for me. Seeing her on a date when we were just friends felt like a punch in the gut. I hope there is enough content for another season. I hope he gets more confident.
