I very like the design of the EX30. I picked the Dolphin, because it has more space and comfort than the EX30, and is about 40% cheaper (in Thailand). BYD Thailand has also the better dealer network than Volvo Thailand. I am happy with my Dolphin (6 months, 15,000 km).
Not sure why but every BYD reviewer complains about the speed warnings but fails to realise you can turn it off very quickly by swiping down and pressing the TSR (traffic sign recognition) shortcut. It takes less than 2 seconds.
They are both Chinese cars and they are both good cars, I have tested them both and they are great. For this reason, I also bought BYD's Song plus ev pure electricity, so far opened tens of thousands of kilometers, without any problems, good performance, and quiet, very good.🎉🎉🎉❤❤❤
Altough i have already opted for the EX 30 Core ( extended range) i had the Dolpin first in mind.( i don't like the like kitschy interior colors) your test confirms the right choice! And mine is due for delevering in november, so hopefully with a lot of updates!
I wanted a LFP battery, because it's more durable, and more room in the back - so, I got the BYD Dolphin Comfort. Road holding is very soft and the Linglong tires aren't good, but otherwise I'm very happy with it.
@@ItsOnlyElectric I don't drive sporty anymore, however the tight bends in mountain roads (where I live) cause it to lean, bounce and wobble a lot : firmer springs and harsher dampeners would reduce that, especially with how much it weights. My Peugeot iOn, while not a model of road worthiness and certainly not a mountain car (OK on dry, abysmal on wet, forget about snow), wasn't so wobbly.
Agree with you about VW and regen... It's inexplicable. One of the best features of my e-Golf is the buttery smooth yet strong regen (and it's adjustable over 3 levels). ID.4? Wimpy regen that you can't adjust. Bizarre choices!
Vale for money and features $ for $, Dolphin wins hands down. Perfect city car, handling/performance more than adequate, if not at the level of a Tesla or some RWD EVs. Exterior is ok, love the interior. Latest software version has fixed all the early annoyances, also has great wireless Apple Carplay. Not what I would pick for long distance 130+ kmh driving with a large family, as the BHD Seal is perfect for that. I have done plenty of 100km trips though in the Dolphin, as it is super comfortable.
I just find the Volvo ex 30 hard to justify the price. For example the one you have in the test is as expensive as a BYD seal awd or a tesla model 3. And compared to those three cars I wouldnt choose the ex30. You can add shortcut for the sign recognition atleast in the seal. Should work the same way in dDolphin. I really like this new concept of having your brother in the review. I think it would be a good addition having him in single car reviews aswell!
BYD was the worst performer in a big winter car comparison, I think of 14 cars (finnish car magazine Tekniikan Maailma). This yearly test is the biggest winter test in the world. EX30 was 6th and the winners were MB and BMW with +80k€ models.
@@Marvilalove Thats one aspect of owning a car. But what about warranty, comfort etc. For example a Volvo only got 2 year warranty vs 6 year of the BYD. If id want longest range for the price id choose a rwd tesla m3. But if I want a bit more comfort id choose a Seal.
One of the best comparisons made. Thank you. I think you get the car that suits your needs best and BYD is the better value but the Volvo is not bad as a value either if you go to the middle package. Good point about the different batteries because most people will charge to 80 if they don't have LFP batteries. Of course, if you charge at home it's OK to go to 100 percent. But it's slow.
Could not find the test would be great to see the results. I have range tested over 30 EVs and it's really not that bad with 87% of claimed range in 5°C.

Maybe its not the right weather to test it but so far I havnt seen any review actually test the volvo ex30 panoramic roof in a heat test. I suspect that the volvo will become very hot in summer as its not silver coated or got a inbuilt shade.
The LFP doesn't like to be charged to 100 %!!! The BMS needs it due to the low volatage difference between 0 and 100% charged. The All lithium batteries has degradation, even LFP.

@@JackMelqartwhat's interesting is that the Tesla model 3 starts at 37k euro in some European markets which makes a lot of these cars feel less enticing to buy
An LFP battery does not "like" to be charged fully at all. It doesn't degrade as much as an NMC battery because the voltage fully charged is lower, but it is still better for it not to sit at 100%. The reason you should charge it to 100% regularly is so the BMS can keep track. The flat voltage curve of the LFP makes it trickier to measure the state of charge.
You mean for balancing. LFP's can be charged 100% regularly. They have far less degradation than the other style of battery (compare the stand M3 to the LR M3 for example).
@@itekani "Like" is not a word for describing what a battery needs. Tesla recommends the LFP pack to be charged at least once a week to 100%. Leaving the battery at 100% over night or for a day or two does nothing in the long-run to the health of the battery. That's also a misconception. What harms the battery the most is temperature. Sitting in a very hot garage for example for days or weeks can eventually ruin a battery. But at this point in time, if a battery failure is going to occur, it's far more likely to happen due to a manufacturing defect than overuse, charging to full, etc. So it's a moot point and so overblown.
@@nozarm10000 Yes I agree, there are many variables to battery degradation and this might not be a major one. But it doesn't make it right saying that it is good for the battery cells to be fully charged every time when in reality it is a recommendation out of necessity to keep the battery pack from going out of balance.
My mum's just bought a BYD dolphin design, really impressed with it compared to rivals. I really wanted the AWD ex30 but after looking at that interior the speckled blue designs reminds me of that vinyl office toilet flooring you get like the public washroom floors, horrible! MG4 XPOWER it is then
Hi guys ... As a V40 owner will say Volvo is a fantastic family car, but on this comparison think you underestimate the Baboon 😂. My first EV will be Dolphin since is just a more efficient car in every way and amazing price for city car...
Thanks for your vids Test drove EX30 last weekend having had car on order for 8 months. Was awful. Terrible efficiency, Apps didn't work such as radio, top heavy , and the parking assistant couldn't detect empty spaces but instead tried to reverse into a parked car! Woeful car.
Volvo EX30 is not affordable, even the Megane, a much better car, is cheaper. Looking forward to a comparison next year between the ë-C3 and the Renault 5
Entry level EX30 can be considered affordable. Really looking forward to the R5, so iconic!! Will do my best to get hold of one as soon as it's available
I agree that the Volvo isn't really affordable. The "core" with base battery and all for 37-38k is on the edge of "affordable". But add any extras and you might as well just buy the Tesla model 3 for the same amount of money. And as I do always bring up in my comments, currently the Tesla model 3 starts at 37k in some European markets. There the Volvo EX30 just doesn't make sense to me at all.
@algimantaszaltauskas4305 might make sense for consumers preferring other options than tesla. Starts at 34k Euro in some markets. But the M3 is a hell of a car for that money.
@@ItsOnlyElectricIt's an option, don't get me wrong but as I've commented before, the pricing of the EX30 makes little to no sense. The "core" variant sits way too close, sometimes above the starting price of the Model 3. Which comes with more range and features as standard. So for me, I just don't see why anyone would choose the EX30 over a Model3 other than liking a Volvo brand name or disliking the Tesla brand name. If you start adding any options to the EX30, it becomes laughable in my opinion. The "ultra" trim is just absurdly priced. For anyone considering an "ultra" trim, for a similar price you could even go up to M3 long range, Seal, Polestar 2, Mach-e, EV6, Ioniq 5, Zeekr 001... which would all be around the same price as the EX30 "ultra" or less yet offer more features/range/luxuries/faster charging all as standard. And for people looking for an affordable EV, the MG4, BYD Dolphin, Model 3 (in the markets where it's cheaper, like in my country) some of the upcoming cars like the Renault R5 make more sense as they have lower entry prices. Overall it's an option but seems like not a very sensible one from a price point of view. It's best feature is the brand name, not the price nor the specifications.
Nice review. I know that a lot of reviewers don't like the front of the Dolphin, but I prefer it over the front of the EX30. The pattern on the EX30 that starts at the lights, then goes vertically down then horizontal, produces a rectangle that reminds me of a letterbox or even a coffin. The interior of the rectangle is empty apart from the Volvo logo, it looks bland. But there again, I am British and we like animals.
Again like so many RUclips car reviews, different regions present with different value. In Australia the EX30 starts from AUD $67K while the high-end Dolphin Premium is AUD $47K, there is just no comparison in price, the $20K difference makes both cars so different. Also look is subjective, I personally think the exterior of EX30 is uglier than the Dolphin.
The problem with chinese brands at the moment is their resale value. Unfortunately, this goes down faster than with brand-name vehicles. So you should also think about how much you can still get for an inexpensive vehicle if you sell it after 5 years. It remind me at the smartphone market für used phones ;-)
In 5 years this depends on multiple factors. The success of the brand, quality, warranties and potential trade wars. Most of the factors are in the hands of the manufacturer. Good cars will deprecate less and it's all up to the consumers at the end. Will see in five years. But I really think that this will change.
I'm very tempted by the model Y, but that would mean Elon Musk getting some of my money, and that's never going to happen. Of the two, I hhave sat in the EX30 and really, really didn't like it. No room in the back and I thought that the materials, although intended to look/feel expensive, just reminded me of the sort of vinyls we used to get back in the 70s. Nor do any of the lower specced models get a heat pump! I was so underwhelmed by the EX30 that I didn't even bother with a test drive. That would leave me getting the cursed FWD option, I suppose. Unfortunately for me, the nearest BYD dealer is over 80km away, so even that I won't be getting. So I keep coming back to the MG option. The 5 has good space, but is FWD, while the 4 has RWD. The good thing is that it looks like MG will be replacing the 5 quite soon with an estate version of the 4, which should do me fine. And then I saw the reports from the Geneva show and it looks like MG are going to be bringing a model Y competitor or 2 (MG9S is a hatchback SUV, while the MG9 is a saloon, and then there's the IM L6 which looks like exactly what I want). Those seem to be my options, unless BYD bring out a hatchback version of the Seal, or even, can I possibly hope for an estate version?
@@ItsOnlyElectric Yeah, that's what I've heard, maybe they'll do it? Personally, there are a few things I detest; Elon Musk SUVs Saloons(sedans FWD In that order, and I don't think that I'm the only one. I really think that Tesla would do far better without Musk. The model Y is simply too big, and the interior colour choices do not suit a hatchback at all, if it's ever going to be USED as a hatchback. Both white and black show up dirt terribly.

Geely hired a Swedish engineer as their chief engineer (Google Geely SEA chief engineer). The bulk of the work done on the EX30 was done in Sweden. Geely Group is an umbrella of diverse brands but they are like VW Group. Some brands they make, others they only provide funding and platforms for. You know that Lamborghini uses a German platform for its SUV, right? And Volvo has used Japanese engines and transmissions. Volvos can be constructed in a number of countries but the directive for the specifications is done in Sweden. And the basic platform was tweaked and modified by Volvo. Porsche uses the same platform as VW but it doesn't result in the same performance because Porsche refines it a lot more. And Bentley too uses that VW platform and refines it to their specifications.

Personally I like the EX30. The Dolphin has an old fashioned design. Also I heard multiple videos saying the BYD software has many bugs yet...
@@nozarm10000 Yes I agree, there are many variables to battery degradation and this might not be a major one. But it doesn't make it right saying that it is good for the battery cells to be fully charged every time when in reality it is a recommendation out of necessity to keep the battery pack from going out of balance.
Wow, there's a big shot here.
A big shot?
BYD has a LFP battery. Thats enough of a reason over the volvo. Price and the double screen just round the package up.
Correct, didn't mention it, even complaining about the font, isn't that an extra offer?, intersting.
My mum's just bought a BYD dolphin design, really impressed with it compared to rivals. I really wanted the AWD ex30 but after looking at that interior the speckled blue designs reminds me of that vinyl office toilet flooring you get like the public washroom floors, horrible! MG4 XPOWER it is then
😂😂 i had the exakt same feeling about the speckled plastic. Some may see it as nostalgic.
Hi guys ... As a V40 owner will say Volvo is a fantastic family car, but on this comparison think you underestimate the Baboon 😂. My first EV will be Dolphin since is just a more efficient car in every way and amazing price for city car...
Baboon!! I forgot that I called it that 😂😂
You may be right
Nice concept 🙌 I would go for the EX30, only because it's Volvo and the overall design of the BYD doesn't grow on me 🙂
Thanks man! Agree. Would do the same. But I guess you'll rather stick with EC40?
@@ItsOnlyElectric absolutely, for the moment I will stick to my EC40 🙂
@SeeliLeck3r sounds sound. 👍
Volvo & BYD are both Chinese.
@@linphilip6389 And ?

🤪
Haha .Jaa verkligen!
Thanks for your vids
Test drove EX30 last weekend having had car on order for 8 months. Was awful. Terrible efficiency, Apps didn't work such as radio, top heavy , and the parking assistant couldn't detect empty spaces but instead tried to reverse into a parked car!
Woeful car.
Good that you tested it first then. Sounds like you got one with the older software. New big rollout as we speak.
Volvo is keeping up man..
Yes Indeed! 👍
The EX-30 seems to be quieter.
Yes, but with a very small margin. Did noise tests in different speeds and almost not noticable
Volvo China Geely Automobile Group
Nice review.
I know that a lot of reviewers don't like the front of the Dolphin, but I prefer it over the front of the EX30. The pattern on the EX30 that starts at the lights, then goes vertically down then horizontal, produces a rectangle that reminds me of a letterbox or even a coffin. The interior of the rectangle is empty apart from the Volvo logo, it looks bland.
But there again, I am British and we like animals.
"I'm brittish and we like animals" 😂😂
Good to hear that people see things differently that's great! I'll drive the coffin and you the baboon. 😂
Volvo
I couldn't help but compare your faces to spot the similarities and differences. 😂
😂😂 I get that.
Kilo-metre please! As I kilowatt kilogram!
That should be EX 30 (not EC30).
Thanks.. typo fixed!
That's a very different price point than in Europe. Guess import tax to Europe on Chinese brands is higher than in Australia..
they are not on the same level of brands.. to be honest.
Two very different approaches
Volvo is for sure the option for everyone!
Volvo is very poor value for an 80% range car over-pricing of extras kills it.
BYDs interior is hideous!
😉 Promo'SM
Property brothers? 😂
Electric Brothers, replacing the property brothers. 😉
Mg4 wagon on the way as you say. Maybe a Seal U?
@@ItsOnlyElectric Yeah, that's what I've heard, maybe they'll do it?
Personally, there are a few things I detest;
Elon Musk
SUVs
Saloons(sedans
FWD
In that order, and I don't think that I'm the only one. I really think that Tesla would do far better without Musk.
The model Y is simply too big, and the interior colour choices do not suit a hatchback at all, if it's ever going to be USED as a hatchback. Both white and black show up dirt terribly.
Guess the Nio ET5T is too expensive and ID7 Wagon too big?
Enyaque?
@@ItsOnlyElectric iD7 is too expensive for what it is.
The Volvo looks like it hit a concrete wall, the slab nose front is rediculous.
Luckily Euro NCAP will punish not having physical buttons (for some functions) starting in January 2026. These are cheapo cars with a huge price tag.
About time, Telsa has the highest accident rate of any brand of car and I think the reason is distracted driving due to the lack of physical buttons.
Didn't know that. Any official stats to share?
@@ItsOnlyElectricIt's on the thedrive site
Both made in China. Volvo is 78% owned by a Chinese comany.
Yes. That's the reality for a lot of brands these days. 1/6 of the world's population is Chinese.
So if you had to pick one?
Means absolutely nothing. Volvo is created in Sweden by a mostly European team of people. It's only constructed in China and that will move to Belgium in a few years.
@benjaminsmith2287 good points!
@@benjaminsmith2287 How does it mean nothing when the platform Volvo ex 30 use is based on geelys Ev platform which is chinese based? So no its not only constructed in china.
@@UgglemannenFTW It's a platform. And the crazy thing is, the chief designer of that platform is Kent Ove Bovellan who is Swedish and is a former Saab engineer.
Sure tha volvo is Chinese made
Yes
The only way I can tell the brothers apart is one looks way, way, way, older.
Just kidding.
😂 I'm 11 years older and have teached him a lot during the years. He's 2.0.
The best affordable compact EV is the second generation NISSAN LEAF
anything not made in Japan isn't as good quality or long lasting or reliable or even good looking
Nissan is the best EV company and the only brand that has Never had any EV Fires
Yes boomer
You're right the Leaf is also an alternative!
but can you drive 300+ km on one charge? does it have heat pump an fast charge speed AC and DC?
It is an insult comparing Volvo with the cheap chinese car that you'll laugh for 1 year then cry for 10 years afterwards
Duh. Volvo is now a Chinese car.
In 10 years, the Chinese will be laughing at this kind of arrogant ignorance. Looking forward to seeing it happen 😅
Yes in 10 years China will be so environmental friendly that that go Back to bicycles. Can't wait to see that
@chocolate-ou4kq like the rest of the 🌎. 😉
There is no way in hell I am driving a Chinese Dolphin. Actually I won’t drive a fully EV until I have no other choice.
I am very scared of handing over my information to China. I'm worried about me and my family.
Apple's phone sends the world's data back to the United States
as a chinese, can;t comprehands why we need your data? I mean what's for?
Then you should go back to 1980's
I assure u .. your are insignificant to the Chinese.
TBH, no one cares about your info, so arrogance!
