Thank you Kris for such a well thought out and useful review. I’ve had an EX30 on order in the US from when it was first announced, but expect to push it out a year in the hope that many of the software annoyances will be resolved by then. I’d also love to see Volvo offering another dark interior option, ideally their traditional charcoal color scheme.

Imo the big killers for me while driving it was,
    1. The attention detection system is bad. It kept pinging at me to look at the road, while I was at intersections actively looking at the directions I have to yield to traffic.
    2. The buttons on the steering wheel is really obnoxious. The buttons need to be pressed head on. You can't press at the edges of the button or anything, it won't respond.
    3. Having one stalk be the gear is not great. The left stalk winds up having to do everything, and it keeps resetting to neutral position when using your blinker, no matter how far it travels. It was inconsistent and clumsy to get it to long-blink.
It drove me mad over just a half hour, and I couldn't see myself living with these things.

I have to agree with you. It’s unforgivable that the software sections in these companies can let the overall experience down so much. To fix software is only a few lines of code while fixing the chassis takes so much work! Volvo, you can see what happened to Volkswagen when they got the software wrong. Buttons are so much better than touch capacitors, VW listened, I hope that Volvo do too.

The comments on the interior quality is important. So many think because it is understated it is cheap feeling. But I think Volvo has always been understated.
The whole console operation is a mistake. This car needs a few more buttons and menu diving is unacceptable in a car.

Another thing on the ergonomics: there are two buttons for front defrost: shortcut on screen, and button on the ceiling. But there's no way or defrosting the rear without opening the climate menu. I think they should replace the shortcut on screen to avoid having two of the same, and missing one of the most used buttons in winter.

Some comments to the driver alert system. In principle, it can be seen as a contradiction that the EU demands a mandatory driver alert system, but that it can be switched off again. Why demand something that can be bypassed again? One can only conclude that the EU has stopped short of imposing something on the driver without any possibility of opposing it. The fact that the driver alert system can only be switched off deep in the menu and cannot be placed on the favorite button seems to indicate that Volvo (or demanded by the EU?) wants to make it difficult to switch off the driver alert system. This may serve to push for more safety without imposing safety measures in absolute terms. While the driver alert system is more of a passive safety system (i.e., I don't necessarily realize that one is no longer paying enough attention to the road), exceeding a speed limit is usually a deliberate action to ignore a safety boundary and is therefore the full responsibility of the driver. This would explain why this function can be assigned to the favorite button. The minimum pressure is that the function must be switched off each time the vehicle is started.

I would of shortlisted the EX30 but the poor rear passenger space/legroom is a deal breaker for me. They could of shortened the unnecessarily long hood and increased the cabin space. There are similar sized or smaller cars than the EX30 with better rear passenger space. For example the Honda Jazz/Fit is shorter than the EX30 and you can have a 6ft driver and 6ft passenger behind him comfortably. It's probably best in class for space, just a shame it's not available as an EV.

Since it’s an electric car, I’m missing a bit that you speak on the one pedal drive experience. When I tried it it felt very sloppy. When you take the foot of the accelerator pedal and let the car come to an complete stop (which you frequently do in city driving) it doesn’t feel smooth like with other Volvo/Polestar products. The physical brakes are way too noticeable. Also the OPD doesn’t work in reverse, which is odd. I feel like this a big part of the experience of an electric car and it definitely didn’t feel next level.

Funny that Volvo couldn’t nail this down right away, with almost 4 years with the 40 series - it’s one of my favourite features so I’m confident it will be fixed. As far as no OPD in reverse, are you saying it uses the mechanical brakes, or you have to use the brake pedal? I like that the mechanical brakes are used going backwards, since it cleans off any rust deposits on the rotors.

The difference between intentional minimalism and budget minimalism is a fine line. EX30 feels more budget to me, not as nice as the price and brand would suggest. It's turning out to be polarizing, you love 1-2 aspects and hate just as many or more. Is it cheap enough for a downmarket buyer who is maybe less picky? Is it nice enough for someone who'd max it out? Is it good enough for someone in the middle to be happy for a long time? I am not so sure it works for anyone in those scenarios, so maybe it's just a really popular lease and launch pad deeper into the brand.

From mid 2024 lane keep assist, speed limit warning and driver alert are all not only mandatory in every car sold in the EU (European economic zone), but the regulations state that all of these systems have to default to off every time you start the car. So no driver profiles any more, no turning these systems off once. So that may apply to your current Tesla, but not from July 2024. You can either activate cruise with the button on the steering wheel or the stalk. But you can only adjust the speed with the buttons, not with the stalk. Driver alert in the EX30 bings at you when you look to the right or left in an intersection or a round about. So no, nothing to do with the speed. I never said that, so not sure why you bring it up.

After watching some of these reviews on this car, it's becoming more and more obvious that some people have an agenda against Tesla and SDVs (software-defined vehicles). It’s one thing to criticize rear leg room and the steering wheel button responsiveness, but to not recommend a vehicle because you have to go to a menu to adjust your mirrors (something I only do once and never again) seems more like a personal annoyance than a valid criticism.
To my point, you mention you didn’t mind that there was no gauge cluster, yet that is the exact thing the car gets hammered for by others who haven’t spent enough time with it behind the wheel. These are personal annoyances, but they shouldn’t factor in why you wouldn’t recommend the car to ANYONE. Some of us who are looking at this car don’t care about this stuff. We realize it’s a first model car, and believe that Volvo will address a lot of these things through OTA updates. Instead, we’d much rather hear about efficiency and the charging experience, something you didn’t even go into at all!

    • @KrisRifa
      @KrisRifa  4 месяца назад +3

My only "agenda" against Tesla or other SDVs (as you call them) is criticising the removal of hard or software buttons when it makes the user experience worse. Which is what I did here. You only mention me talking about mirror controls being buried in menus, which is only one of the many things I talk about and show. Your portrayal of my criticism is far from complete and at best inaccurate.
And what's up with "why you wouldn’t recommend the car to ANYONE"? When did I ever say this? I said it is hard to recommend because the software isn't finished and there is much to be improved. So please refrain yourself from misrepresenting what I actually have said and not said. That is in violation of the commenting guidelines here on the channel.
"These are personal annoyances" This is my review, my opinion and my channel. So I am going to talk about what annoys me, as much as I want, and if you don't like that or think that is fair - don't watch my videos. I've been voicing my opinion on my channel since 2016, and I don't plan on stopping anytime soon.
"but to not recommend a vehicle because you have to go to a menu to adjust your mirrors (something I only do once and never again) seems more like a personal annoyance than a valid criticism" So just because YOU never adjust them it shouldn't be part of the evaluation? When I lived in the city I used them every day when street parking, to not curb my wheels. In this car I actually used the mirrors today for the same reason. You criticising me for what I care about in a car only highlights your lack of understanding that people are different and value different things in different ways. Funny how that works.
Lastly, I have two other videos talking about range and charging extensively, a range test and a long trip test. If you want to know my experience when it comes to range, efficiency and charging - watch those.

That was just one example, but the other examples you had were mostly software related, which can be addressed in the coming months. What will happen if/when Volvo addresses these "problems?" Will you take down this video? You are entitled to your opinion, but your video is misleading, and I found very little "criticisms" to not recommend the car to prospective buyers in this class and price range. Is there room for improvement? Absolutely, so just say so rather than saying you can't recommend the car.
      - "And what's up with "why you wouldn’t recommend the car to ANYONE"? When did I ever say this? I said it is hard to recommend because the software isn't finished and there is much to be improved. So please refrain yourself from misrepresenting what I actually have said and not said. That is in violation of the commenting guidelines here on the channel."
It's right there in your title! "Hard to recommend" when you should've said "Good, but leaves room for improvement," so don't talk to me about misrepresentation.
      - "This is my review, my opinion and my channel. So I am going to talk about what annoys me, as much as I want, and if you don't like that or think that is fair - don't watch my videos. I've been voicing my opinion on my channel since 2016, and I don't plan on stopping anytime soon."
Relax, I'm not going to take over your channel. You are getting worked up for nothing. I just found this "review" incomplete and misleading. That is also my opinion, and I think I have a right to voice that opinion in the comments section, whether you agree with it or not.
      - "So just because YOU never adjust them it shouldn't be part of the evaluation? When I lived in the city I used them every day when street parking, to not curb my wheels. In this car I actually used the mirrors today for the same reason. You criticising me for what I care about in a car only highlights your lack of understanding that people are different and value different things in different ways. Funny how that works."
Then why not mention that? Everyone is different, and this is a personal preference. You don't say that. You list it as a criticism without realizing not everyone adjusts their mirrors every day. The best critics out there mention these things as something that could bother you, but not everyone. It doesn't mean the system is broken.
      - "Lastly, I have two other videos talking about range and charging extensively, a range test and a long trip test. If you want to know my experience when it comes to range, efficiency and charging - watch those."
Yes, and I watched those, but don't you think it would be a good idea to mention your findings in this video as well? You don't even tell people to watch those videos in case they were wondering about range, charging, efficiency, etc.

Thank you! I fully agree with you. As I'm going into the comments section I can't help but think: From an entire 30 minute video, almost 22 minutes is absolutely praising the car. How it drives, the quality build, interior design etc etc, things that really matter. Yet the title of the video is that he wouldn't recommend this vehicle. That is unfortunately something that will make that I don't view this channel anymore. Just like Volvo_Kristian (who by the way Kris says he is friends with). His one "bad" thing about the EX30 is the positioning of the button to open the rear/tailgate. He says you can't open it if your hands are full of packets 😂😂, just like 99% of other cars with only a button below the boot. Overall, ofcourse it's important that they get software right, but that is exactly the point - if a manufacturer can nail the design and drivability, that's kind of 90% of what you want. They will address these issues - some of these journalists carry on like they've never had a Samsung or Apple phone that initially launched with terrible features, but then a few updates later, it's near perfect. 😅.... making such a big thing about having to adjust mirrors, like you drive around doing that the entire time. The one, consistent thing that I have picked up from these reviews is the driver monitoring system, it does sound like it's too sensitive, but again, I believe Volvo will address that with OTA updates. I couldn't help but smile when Kris seems to want to criticize something but couldn't because it really seems as though Volvo got close to perfect on this model. I'm sending this all the way from South Africa and can't wait to get my EX30.

@@fredsnyman3096 You are absolutely correct! Here I am watching this video, and the guy's basically praising the car for most of it, and I'm just waiting for the hammer to come down on why he wouldn't recommend it. It turns out to be a lack of shortcuts and some software/driving aid inconsistencies, which can be addressed in OTAs. The problem I have with these journalists is they don't factor in what audience is looking at this car. People realize this is a new model car, with a much-needed software upgrade for Volvo. There will be some issues at first. I would be shocked if there weren't. However, they are not as serious as when the ID.4 launched, and I am much more confident in Volvo to address these things than some company like Fisker. My advice to this guy is: know your audience. Put yourself in someone else's shoes and then tell me if your personal grievances about the car apply to everyone else.

You were warned about commenting guidelines (which you will find in the description box of every video), yet you continue to gas light and to misrepresent what I have said. You have repeatedly said that I don't recommend this car, which is not correct. I have never said I wouldn't recommend it. I have said, as the title says "it is hard to recommend" - but those two things are very different. Due to the repeated violation of the commenting guidelines, you will no longer be able to comment on this video. You are not banned from commenting on the channel, but if you do reply here or comment more, you will be blocked from any more comments on the channel. You are NOT blocked from commenting on this channel, but further violation of the commenting guidelines will result in you being blocked.
I will reply to something you did write, which I hope gives you a better understanding.
"and I'm just waiting for the hammer to come down on why he wouldn't recommend it. It turns out to be a lack of shortcuts and some software/driving aid inconsistencies, which can be addressed in OTA"
I will never refrain criticism because a product may improve in the future, not even if it can be "fixed" with a SW update. It is my job and responsibility to critique these cars as they are when I test them - and at the of the day it benefits the consumer. My and other car reviewers videos are watched by people who make these cars, they've told me them selves that they do. So what we say may and has been taken into consideration when improving their products. If we don't voice our criticism, as small as some might seem - the people who make and buy the cars may not know.
I cannot do a review based on "it can be fixed with a SW update" when that statement may not even be true, and if it is true - to what extent? I sure cannot see into the future, so how can you? How can you, or anybody be confident that the all of these updates may come? And be so confident that everything will be fixed? As I said in the video, Volvo have better hardware and SW solutions in other cars. That this is a new product isn't an excuse. And if me and others don't voice our opinion, how would they know their products aren't good enough? It's a dilemma isn't it.

No HUD at that price point when there is no display right in front of you is unfortunately a deal breaker for a lot. This looks rushed to the market and I’ve been in the Car when it was on tour in the U.K. in December. Looks great, great performance and the interior looked decent enough. But please give us a decent drive select button or switch other than a boring stock. When I seen the new Renault 5 retro it stopped any idea on the EX30 cold just now. They need to obviously fix its problems because it should be a great Car that shouldn’t disappoint. Come on Volvo learn to change and develop like dare I say Tesla.
So wait you have to turn off the alerts every time you drive. It doesn’t learn your personal preference.

@@benjaminsmith2287 Yes that is true. But as many people complain about having no HUD or instrument cluster and ex30 being cramped. The zeekr X is a good alternative.
And its a matter of what is important for people. The EX 30 might have better driving feel but is it more important than comfort and instrument cluster/HUD and space? Most people buy this kind of car to go from point A to B. If driving performance is something that is important its better to go for a sedan than an SUV.
People tend to overlook waranty too much also . The ex30 only got 2 year warranty vs zeekr 10 year in Sweden atleast.

Kris - your like one of those muppets complaining from the balcony - which one are you Statler or Waldorf? The mirrors and steering wheel controls being buried in the menus is a problem? You adjust them once for your driver profile and you never have to touch them again? Everytime you hop in the car it's set up specifically for you. In fact, with Tesla you hop in another car with your driver profile and it carries across. Those buttons on the steering wheel look a bit of faff. The back seat and boot are microscopic. The reason not to buy this car is it's just too small for the price (at least in Australia). Simple.

If you want a unified UX-design where the driver is the center of attention, there's no one other that does it better than Mazda.
If Mazda can get away with you "connecting" with your car through a knob and 3-4 buttons, you know they've done a great job.

This is not a Volvo. It is a car with a Volvo badge on it. The chinese owners has got to much influence to design/produce this car. Cheepest/smallest and fastest Volvo and not safest as Volvo's dna is. Everything managed in a screen and the few buttons that it has is of poor quality. Suspension is not good enough for the many HP in a small car like this. The range of the battery is not good eighter because HP eat the range, so not near the range expected in winther or summer. So even that it also have the lowest co2 for a Volvo this is just the fairytale to greenwash the story. If they really care they could have settled with less power and get a better range and better safety as Volvo is know for.
