A fan of the EX30 design and offering but just BEWARE that the cheapest version does NOT have a HEAT PUMP so expect to have at least a 30% reduction of the range when running in colder climates, which is very poor considering the max range is 209 miles!!! So getting only around 140mile range for a £33k electric vehicle is shocking and no excuse and heat pumps should be standard on all EVs.
Thanks, Ginny. It's funny how different reviewers have different opinions as most reviewers seem to think Volvo has one-pedal down, better than most carmakers. And Ginny is one of the few to mention the voice commands for Volvo's interface. There is one misconception that some people are saying and that is because the car is made in China it's more inexpensive. Volvo makes their flagship sedan in China, the S90, at least for the US market, and it is not inexpensive. In fact, it's costly. Lotus will make their flagship SUV, the Eletre, in China. Polestar will make the Polestar 5 sedan in China and that will cost a ton of money. And Volvo plans to make the EX30 in Belgium in 2025 or after 2025, that was recently announced. So, making it in China probably doesn't make it less costly to buy for consumers. The other things mentioned did help bring the price down plus it is on a shared Geely platform. But, other very expensive cars use shared platforms. I like this interior. It reminds me of Volvo's Scandi interiors of previous generations but there's more attention paid to textures. That it is sustainable, or more sustainable than previous generations is laudable. Don't like the lack of instrument display behind the steering. But overall, love the interior. Good car. A modernized BEV XC40 that's maybe shrunken a bit too much?

Shame on this lady reviewer who didn't even point out the lack of an instrument cluster in the view of the driver. She never once in this review looked over to check her speed in the central display! Ideally though, the EX30 would achieve full one-pedal driving experience purely using regen-braking, when there the battery is able to accommodate the energy.
As a coincidence, I have my dealer preview today at 11:30 😁 As on my current XC40 - I'd take the parcel shelf out and put it under he rear floor - make a big difference from banging my forehead on it
Great review! I put my deposit down after watching this. Seems like it is going to be the perfect city car. A little nervous about the lack of climate control buttons but from what I've seen using the Google voice option seems simple enough. "Hey Google set the temperature to 70 degrees" seems pretty simple.
Some Vauxhall dealers are offering new (pre facelift though) Vauxhall Corsa Electric for less than £20k now! £13k discount. Three year old ones £12K or so. I can't imagine a Volvo will be discounted that much any time soon.

Having own The XC40 mild Hybrid for the last 3 years but decided to go fully electric last months and ordered a fully electric Renault Mégane im hoping i havnt made thw wrong choice as the XC40 has been one the best cars i have had
I have had both an ICE XC40 and now run a P6 Recharge XC40(EV) and still love it even though it isn't perfect, i.e the range isn't anywhere near what Volvo claim it will be. The EX30 is on my list for when my current lease runs out.
Considering the EX30 after canceling my order for the Fisker Sport(FWD, 250 mile range, LFP battery) after they decided to not include a heat pump on the Sport trim. It priced out at $44,000+ with standard color/wheels, optional faux leather seats and tow package. The RWD Extended range Ultra trim EX30 includes more standard features for less.
Really helpful to learn about the different batteries used.....I hadn't realised this difference even though I have been driving an EV for 2.5 years......I'm at the point of considering which EV I'll go for next, and this information is both interesting and helpful to know :)
5:38 says she is driving the “single motor, extended range, Plus £38 K”. I would love this to be accurate, but the details Volvo supply state that the Cloud blue exterior, panoramic roof and breeze interior are only available in the Ultra specification
Is anyone else having trouble viewing this video? There's a glitch at about 11:59. The video stops but the sound continues. Then the sound stops. Then it all starts again but it's all juddery. I've viewed it on 3 devices and it's the same on all of them.
This is the 5th back to back review I've seen on the EV30. I like the narrative down to earth review of the EX30. Well done. As with the other 4 videos, I can't help but get a first impression that the EV30 is a mixed bag. The design is very nice, but after that it seem polarizing and show a lot of compromises, and the reviews also seem to feel a reflection of a bit of cynicism to the critique, which feel on point. The summary is I feel the price is not appealing for what you get and thus not priced right, making me come to the conclusion the EV30 is priced to expensive for its value, for all 3 tiered offerer gsm, and misses the Mark for a luxury compact EV, despite the Volvo badge. I had high hopes, too, but at first impression the appeal is somewhat gone. It's not the review, but rather the obvious compromises coming to light, if which the list is too big. It's not just this review, but others are showing similar signs.
Was at an EV show this weekend, the EX30 is a nice $69k AUD in Australia. They didn't have one yet though, nice polestars and I got to sit in a Dolphin for the first time so that was good.
I'll consider one once it's got a head up display. As it stands, no instruments in the drivers view forcing the driver to look away from the road regularly is the most un-Volvo thing about this car.
Beautiful looking and affordable EV, well done Volvo. She did fail to mention a few things on her review, such as charging times and options. I saw another video and the reviewing stated the base model comes with heated seats and wheel. The lack of buttons and having the speedometer in the center is just like the Tesla and I am sure I would get used to it over time. It does make it easier to voice commands thru Google instead of trying to use the screen while driving which is extremely dangerous. She didn't demonstrate it but another reviewer did, he just asked Google to turn on the AC and it worked perfectly. The outside looks great and the minimalistic interior also like the Tesla looks good except what one person already commented on is the self cleaning oven type dash. I don't like it much at all and it makes the vehicle look cheap, I would prefer just a solid color, and I'm not sure about that square steering wheel, I will see how it feels when I test drive one. . I think with this kind of pricing it will do well, it's certainly the most affordable EV you can buy in the US. I always liked the Tesla but they do have quality control issues and are far more expensive, so once this Volvo is available I will strongly consider trading in my gas vehicle for this EV.
Great car, especially for the price but i just hate the overly "minimalist" interiors. At least give us some physical buttons for like climate, volume etc. i definitely prefer the way that kia and hyundai are doing their interiors nowadays.
Currently own a Kia Niro S model, which is a pretty impressive and practical EV. The EX30 looks tempting though they should have made it 100mm longer I believe and added a heads up display.
Looks nice on the outside. Not so keen on the 'self cleaning oven liner' finish on the dash in this spec' though and it looks like touch sensitive buttons on the steering wheel? I find those irritating to use. Hopefully not too many of the 'one switch to do a couple of different functions after pushing a button' in the car either; nothing but a nuisance on the VW's. Probably a nice car though I'm sure. As I say, it looks really good from the outside.
Hi, I'm considering this to replace my XC40 Recharge as we don't need such a large car. Have you any information on if software issues have been resolved? Infotainment screens bricking and sometimes working sometimes not with the emergency brake randomly activating? fortunately it wont be until March 2025 but I do need to decide in the next month or so due to lead in times?? I cant imagine Volvo not resolving this quickly.
Hopefully by 2025 they might have fixed the problems with it, I've heard stories of Volvo having to take some of them back, certainly my experience during a test drive was dire
The test drive was in a early UK car, the heated steering wheel wouldn't turn off, the glove box wouldn't open(done in software), the speed limit indicator was all over the place, bonnet wouldn't open, voice control wouldn't work, car wouldn't switch off until you got out and locked it, Speedo was too far from sightline, a couple of weeks later I drove a Smart based on same base, it worked perfectly. I read of continued problems with software and the screen packing up and Volvo allowing allowing owners to hand them back.
Wow, that isn't acceptable for a major manufacturer to allow a car to be driven like that. May explain why you cant configure a new EX30 on their website. However I believe that the 2025 Model year will be available to configure from Monday the 8th. if that's correct, I certainly hope they have resolved these issues so it works as it should. Not a good situation for an international company!
Just been to see a UK EX30, expecting to love the looks and design, software issues not withstanding. I have to say, the outside looks good but it could just be because I'm moving from AN XC40 but the inside is underwhelming to say the least and both myself and wife thought the seats were pretty flat with little side support. I went intending to test drive it but after sitting inside neither of us felt an urge to drive it. Hard to explain but just didn't get the positive feeling we expected. On a plus, the salesman said that a new software upgrade had landed that has sorted out 'most' of the issues. Think we may be looking for a different car now😔
'Batteries that don’t perform that well in cold weather'? Our Scandi cousins are going to love this Volvo then!. I can imagine 'Sven, Olaf and Bjorn' rueing the day they ever switched their trusty internal combustion engined Saab's and Volvo's for this. I do like the look of it though!
May have missed it but what are the charging speeds of each of the trims/battery sizes please? Also, did you say it has the Google Android Automotive navigation system?
Does it have Android Auto? Some reviews say it does and others not.. Really good review as always! I think Volvo have done well with this, I hope the battery health and charging infrastructure can handle all the new EVs on the road..
I have a Chevy Bolt EUV that I really like. The ex30 would be a serious contender for an upgrade if it had driver gauges -- or HUD -- and buttons; I won't own a car with a middle tablet only.
Just a comment about the boot. About the same as you get in a VW ID3? Not quite, the difference is about 70 liters. Don't mean to be grumpy, the car looks nice though.
I do like the look & proportions of this 😁. Same with the Polestar 2. Are the two companies still linked ? ( Wish Polestar 2 would do an estate though ). So going to be an interesting choice between lower price v better batteries & adding a heat pump, or just a heat pump 🤔 What’s your standard efficiency rating ? How do you quote ? An EV brands making cars with seats that come out, like the Skoda Yeti did ( very Lotus way of adding lightness! )
I think Geely own Volvo who in turn own Polestar. So I guess in that respect they are still linked. Though they operate as separate entities. A Polestar estate sounds amazing, though I do love the rear of the Polestar 2.
Nice to see a slight drop in price compared to the competition. However, the Smart Brabus has better suspension. If you are after a budget EV then I would also look at the Citroën E-C3
@Illuminatio Sorry but I'm confused Citroën E-C3 owner for 18mths...?? The C3 yes but the E-C3 is not even on the road till December in Europe and Jan in UK
@@mikadavies660I assume they're referring to the Indian e-C3 which the European model is based on (although that's only been on sale for 6 months not 18 so maybe they mean the regular petrol version).
At first glance via the internet, there's a lot to like about the EX30, but I'm not sold on it yet. Too much of a Tesla wannabe. The rear seat seems cramped. I want stronger one-pedal driving. Heat pumps should now be standard. My wife would like the cloth seats, however. Guess I'll have to test drive one when it shows up here.
I can’t believe that in that whole video you failed to tell us what range each model would do. Did I miss something? Surely that is one of the first things anyone would want to know?
Yes, she mentions range - but don’t believe it! Do your own calculation: battery capacity/efficiency (and down from there considering driving style, terrain, wind direction, etc.).
@@Prodogy92 - which is a WLTP derived figure and not achievable in the real world, hence giving a false expectation and therefore not worth considering, or mentioning.
The most off putting thing is the bit about using a different battery to other more expensive EVs. Firstly the battery is much heavier meaning less MPH. Secondly and more worryingly the battery in this car doesn’t perform so well in cold weather. The more I read about EVs the more likely I am to stick to buying another hybrid when I buy a new car next spring. There’s quite a lot to get your ahead around (access to charging points, lifespan and performance of batteries, depreciation, range, cost of repairs, excessive cost in UK compared with other countries) when buying an EV and you need to put in hours of research before buying one. Thank goodness for RUclips! Manufacturers aren’t upfront about the drawbacks. I’m reminded of one Latin phrase CAVEAT EMPTOR (buyer beware) and one originally German term THE DEVIL IS IN THE DETAIL.
@@doittoit00 - the efficiency numbers in the written description are likely incorrect: - higher efficiency for the AWD, than Single Motor? - higher efficiency than Volvo’s published figures?
base isn’t bad but need to know what the options/packs look like. That extended battery version is getting pretty close to tesla pricing and I’d bet on it being more once you’ve specced it similarly. Still a good step forwards and should put pressure on prices for cars like the Corsa etc which won’t be able to live with the volvo at the same price
had a look at the website. The basic spec has decent options including active cruise/lane change assist etc. Pretty good. But no heat pump except on the ‘ultra’ which is £42k. Hopefully when the ‘full range’ is released they’ll allow some of those options to be specced on the lower end car - you’re forced to get eg 20” wheels with the ultra which you might not. Good to see 360 degree camera too. May go on my shortlist next time around
This EV is one of my absolute favourites. What they have done with the design and to keep costs down is commendable. Unfortunately the amount of leg room in the back does not fulfill the needs of my long legged family so that's sadly a dealbreaker for me. If that wasn't the case I would very likely buy one.
@@laidbackracing5559 Hey if you like ugly cars, you can. Me, I like a car with style and nice lines. That Volvo is ugly as hell at any angle. Simple really 👍 And you do realise all the people testing this car have so far been paid by Volvo group. You do understand that I presume.?

I know every EV reviewer loves one pedal driving, but I can't help but think that there are times when coasting must be better for your economy? I admit I've never driven an EV, I know some like Hyundai have paddles where you can alter the amount of regen, but without that wouldn't you have to keep your foot planted to maintain speed? If you have regen as soon as you take your foot off the pedal, don't you lose speed straight away unless you're accelerating? Or is it a bit more nuanced than that? I do like the idea of systems where if you brake it uses regen unless you brake hard, then it kicks in the brakes
If you are used to one paddle driving, you don't want to miss it. It is really comfy that you don't have to brake and if you want to have less regan just push the accelerator a bit - really easy.
I might have missed it but I didn't see any mention of the awful wiper/indicator stalk design. Having no stop position for the wipers, and needing to look at the infotainment to tell me which setting it is, is a major safety issue. Surprising Volvo allowed that. And as for the stalk not clicking into place when using the indicator, that is just going to mean EXC30 drivers roaming around with indicators flashing left and right while the driver tries to activate/cancel them. To me that's worse than the window switch button in my ID.3
It'll be interesting to see what effect Citroen's new £20k EV will have on the market in 2024, it could well make all these £30k+ cars seem rather pricey..
Backpack 😂 Well done Volvo, going to see this in December. Is it just me or does this clip stop and stutter? Nothing against the channel after all I’m a sub but have to emit “The late brake show” review absolutely blows this out the water and I watched this one first. I was left feeling I didn’t know much be it things covered quickly. On the LBS review I felt I knew so much about the Car that hadn’t been covered here.
As seen with other reviewers this car should be called "accident waiting to happen" simply because removal of all key important physical bottoms and placed them hidden in central screen which is a big distraction. Zeekr X is much better proposition as it has head up display and many more useful features which Volvo eliminated with intent. Very poor & dangerous decision by VOLVO sadly. Give it a miss.
Nice looking car, but surprised Volvo has gone for a touch screen to do everything and not in your eye line, dangerous. Stellantis pricing is excessive and as new more affordable cars arrive then they will have a problem.
One pedal driving - I believe they set it like that, because most people that aren't use to it, gets motion sickness easily. Wife had the issue when we were test driving an electric xc40 and electric c40. Hope there are granular options for it in an OTA update.

One pedal driving not working is a dealbreaker. Hopefully that can be fixed with software?
But mad isn’t it that manufacturers can’t nail what people want or expect.
In other reviews it has seemed to work, so it might be an issue with just that one.
Great video guys! And a classy piece of work from Team Volvo IMO.
Really helpful to learn about the different batteries used.....I hadn't realised this difference even though I have been driving an EV for 2.5 years......I'm at the point of considering which EV I'll go for next, and this information is both interesting and helpful to know :)

I’m not sure where you are getting that feeling? There is no other vehicle that is mildly luxurious at this price point in the segment.
Have you seen the car in real life? This is not premium alas.

If they have the Seal in AUS, those are fab.
@@neilgoro9609 it's a bit bigger than I want, $52K though

The icon next to the luggage and car seat is a scuba cylinder.
Could the regen on the one pedal be set to low so you need to use the brake more?
It looks good, but I think I'd take the Smart #1, especially if I was buying the dual motor versions of each.
Interesting, stylish, compact, like it a lot! It suits you! 😉👌
Great Review
Looks nice on the outside. Not so keen on the 'self cleaning oven liner' finish on the dash in this spec' though and it looks like touch sensitive buttons on the steering wheel? I find those irritating to use.
Hopefully not too many of the 'one switch to do a couple of different functions after pushing a button' in the car either; nothing but a nuisance on the VW's.
Probably a nice car though I'm sure. As I say, it looks really good from the outside.
It’s awful from the outside. Are you blind??
First impression - rear wiper...good.
i can understand the comparisons to the BMW i3, it's one of the most interesting vehicles i've sat in in a while.
A little confused, I thought the EX30 boot was 319L while the VW ID3's boot was 380L, that's quite different.
Does it come with a spare tire?
I hear on nearly everyone of these types of car reviews that the only wind noise is from wing mirrors. Why can’t that be fixed?

Hi, I'm considering this to replace my XC40 Recharge as we don't need such a large car. Have you any information on if software issues have been resolved? Infotainment screens bricking and sometimes working sometimes not with the emergency brake randomly activating? fortunately it wont be until March 2025 but I do need to decide in the next month or so due to lead in times?? I cant imagine Volvo not resolving this quickly.
Hopefully by 2025 they might have fixed the problems with it, I've heard stories of Volvo having to take some of them back, certainly my experience during a test drive was dire
What happened on your test drive?
Think we may be looking for a different car now😔
Damn shame about the wind noise and lack of heat pump. Nice attempt though. Great review
I'd be tempted but this really needs a HUD at least. The central screen only is a hard no.
What is your height? Sorry for asking. I'm interested in the amount of space in the back seat.
Does it have Android Auto?
Some reviews say it does and others not..

So going to be an interesting choice between lower price v better batteries & adding a heat pump, or just a heat pump 🤔
What’s your standard efficiency rating ? How do you quote ?
An EV brands making cars with seats that come out, like the Skoda Yeti did ( very Lotus way of adding lightness! )
I think Geely own Volvo who in turn own Polestar. So I guess in that respect they are still linked. Though they operate as separate entities.
A Polestar estate sounds amazing, though I do love the rear of the Polestar 2.
Do you get the option of a heat pump?
Heat pump comes with the top end models as standard. 👍🏻
No heat pump is a deal breaker IMHO. Not even an optional extra. Not a lot of room in the rear, a good fit for a small presenter. Kona for me.
The extended range models (both Single Motor and Dual Motor) have a heat pump as standard. Only the entry LFP model does not.
It has a heat pump in two out of the three trims.
Nice to see a slight drop in price compared to the competition. However, the Smart Brabus has better suspension. If you are after a budget EV then I would also look at the Citroën E-C3
As an e-C3 owner, I would second that - lovely car; no complaints after 18 months (and the HUD is a great addition to safety).

It is mentioned at about 5:56, as well as calculated in the written description.
@@doittoit00 - the efficiency numbers in the written description are likely incorrect:
- higher efficiency for the AWD, than Single Motor?
Its probably much better made than the Tesla.
The 'Martian' is a rucksack with a bed roll, hence the tent above
They will also build it in Europe for next Model Year.
This EV is one of my absolute favourites. What they have done with the design and to keep costs down is commendable. Unfortunately the amount of leg room in the back does not fulfill the needs of my long legged family so that's sadly a dealbreaker for me. If that wasn't the case I would very likely buy one.

Still no where near Model Y in efficiency…
It is really comfy that you don't have to brake and if you want to have less regan just push the accelerator a bit - really easy.
please compare this Renault emagne. They look similar to me
My only gripe is the placement of the charging port
Lol what why? I’ve read that the driver side rear is the preferred location for most.
can someone 6' tall get in the back seat with a 6' driver? not from what I have seen. Was really hot for this one...but...
No heat pump as standard and just a 3 year limited warranty is disappointing.
Two of the three trims have a heat pump the warranty is 4 years 50k miles. It was 3 years free maintenance. Also 8 year battery warranty.
