I can honestly say that the Elizabeth Line is amazing. Having now travelled to Paddington in no time at all, it is just wonderful.

I feel it's important that you all get some sense of how much you (four) have made the past two years better. Working at home staring at the same walls and having little contact with anyone was made bearable by watching the hangouts - almost on a loop. And I still am. Thank you.
A couple of months ago I caught COVID and felt rough for a while. A big boost during this was Alex reading out one of my comments - not just the comment, but getting an unexpected "anybody" perked me up a lot. That interaction at the end of the episodes makes them so much more. I wonder if you realised this when you started out ?
The hangouts hit emotionally, intellectually and (for the museum) I think financially. A couple of weeks ago I attended your Clapham South tour. I decided to visit Kennington that day to see the dome for myself - because of the hangouts. Somehow of course I chose a weekend with the Northern line completely shut at Kennington so I walked there, your episope on this station gave me the motivation to find a way. I then visited Clapham Common station just to get that view of the island platform from the top of the stairs - it felt so much like being back at the old Angel it was rather odd and emotional. An honestly I never expected to get so excited about a poster site letter (at Down Street), but I did. I would never have thought of doing any of this before the hangouts started. You are all equally to blame / thank.
I don't know if you ever need to justify the hangouts to the museum - I hope not, but if so my personnal tally - directly as a result of hangouts - is 6 virtual tours, 7 physical tours (done or booked), 1 museum trip, 2 depot trips, 3 tiles (entirely due to Laura) and countless items from the shop, not yet including a deck chair. You are the best advertisement for the museum, in every sense of the word.
One final thing Alex - HOLE BORN. I've needed to say that for a while.

Spoke to Andy Lord at Abbey Wood, he was directing passengers to the queue for the Elizabeth line. Even for London it was busy at Abbey Wood. Didn't realise until later who he was, genuinely helpful guy.

The large passenger flow handling is something else, I used it Sat 28th May, and it was heaving and crowded, but thanks to the brilliant stations, it hand;ed it with ease and aplomb, i think. 80-100,000 could have using it that day, due to crowds at Liverpool Street and Paddington and a 40,000 odd Comic Con at the Excel Arena, watching it all was amazing, the Elizabeth Line is truly World Class Metro and construction, we should all be proud of Cross Rail/

Love it! Wonderful to bump into the team at Abbey Wood, and have a quick chat. Didn't realise you'd caught me on camera, you can see me come through the gates and smile as I spot you! Never thought I'd have a walk-on role in a hangout, even by accident. What a day it was. As you say, after a grim couple of years the opening-up of London (and elsewhere) is perfectly symbolised by the line's opening, humanised and presaged in a good way by your now-not-so-hidden hangouts. Shame I missed the shop at Paddington by a few minutes, although I doubt I'd have gone for a deckchair. Nice touch there.

Loving the large number of people in the background. Most exciting is that most seem to be regular people making normal journeys - rather than people merely just having a look. It's all very well building the shiny, but its the travellers actually travelling that gives it meaning.
Great bumping into you guys at Woolwich. The whole day was great. The joy that it was open at last, the wonder of the stations, the shock at the scope of the shrinking of London was emitting out of pretty much everyone. People were talking to strangers on trains in London which was bizarre!

I traveled from Whitechapel to Canary Wharf with the Elizabethan Line. Not just it saved my travel time by 20 mins, but it actually saved me from paying the Overground and the DLR (not that I always do lol). But anyways overall, the Elizabethan Line is very fancy and so it brings some charm when travelling

Such excitement! I no longer live in London, but I've still been following the Lizzy Line developments both on the Hangouts and on various other RUclips channels. It's so great that the line is now in operation after all this build-up.
As for South Ken, I came from a museumy family so it's a station I remember a lot from my childhood - I'm old enough to remember when the escalators were first put in there, and we no longer had to queue up to use the ancient and overcrowded lifts! To think that something I remember being put in has now had to be replaced because of old age - what does that say for me??? I will tune in eagerly next week, as Mr Grundon's words have left me with an image of the team rappelling down an old lift shaft in order to get to the deep level of the station ...

Further to Laura's (gist) 'Economic Benefits' of Crossrail: Perhaps London isn't unique in the World in taking RER to the next level, but it is in the English speaking world.
Andy Byford just grazed past that in unspoken reference to Toronto and New York (where he was managing director of transit systems).
Byford is there for London setting the new standard of what can and should be accomplished!
As a Brit/Cdn writing from Toronto, but closely familiar with the aforementioned systems, London has now set the bar in what can be accomplished. And in the case of the message travelling internationally, that's actually the rolling stock more than the physical infrastructure.
Toronto is fiddling with the 'Ontario Line' using yesterday's technology, paying tomorrow's prices, when the same degree of tunneling and station building (and tunnel bore size, btw!) could host *regional* trains out on to the existing surface rail network. But of course, that would take dynamic thinking.
London has done the grunt work for running such systems in the English speaking world. The excuse of 'no, can't do that' can no longer pertain.
I'd love to have a one-on-one quietly with Byford some day to 'debrief' him on a lot of road-blocks that have been thrown in his way prior.
As a born Londoner, albeit in love with the UK countryside more than the urbs, London has never looked so beckoning. It's a game of leap-frogging, and London has it right now.

Nearly six years, I commuted from Hainault to Paddington or Edgware Rd. Shortish walk to a bus stop, 150 bus to the station, Central Line to Oxford Circus, then Bakerloo Line to Paddington or Edgware Rd. Usually, around an hour and a half, but on a bad day, as much as two hours each way.
For a short while, I commuted to the same destinations from Goodmayes. Frankly, the level of decrepitude and grime on the BR trains particularly, was depressing. I can imagine commuters will have been gobsmacked by this new line.

Love Crossrail... except coming back from Hayes tonight I arrived at Paddington exactly 11pm... and turned away and had to get the Bakerloo. The journey back to Woodford was a horror. Central Line jammed with the usual late night creatures... When the train eventually sauntered into Oxford Circus we were like sullen animals being shepherd into the slaughter house... Home after midnight.

I have still to ride the Crossrail trains in the tunnel section, believe it’s shut on Sunday’s, at lest the 75,000 string team over 13 years made something for future generations, as for Alex, I had been to Stockwell bus garage a few times - years ago, they were running Routemasters.
Been reading up, that when all the sections are joined up, TfL Rail will be no more, I found an arrival online with a link to purchase memorabilia, that’s if your fan, as I was, will Miss the the brand and the rest of those splendid 315 EMU’s will sadly go for scrap, if not already departed.
Would like to buy some face masks for Crossrail, gather that the museum shop sells them, still keen to find out how much money I will get charged at a reduced rate for station tours, as on an old-aged London Freedom Pass, possibly someone could help me here?.
Best wishes to one and all for an amazing tour 👍.

Quick question (I know I’m late to the party on this one): It’s often said that the Elizabeth Line could have the potential for 36 tph like the Victoria line, so would a signalling upgrade have to be done and / or new platforms built at the likes of Abbey Wood and Shenfield need to be done before this could happen?

Well….Abbey Wood station is in highly populated Abbey Wood itself, is close enough to serve east Plumstead, Thamesmead and even bits of Belvedere so it’s not really in the middle of nowhere. AND it’s been built in a way that Liz line could be extended to Dartford and beyond in the future. There is also a train depot at Plumstead so it’s sensible to run the line to Abbey Wood

How come no one's asking these officials why they did not consider toilets as essential in their fancy new stations. Especially when there aren't any inside the trains itself.
Canary wharf could have the distinction of being the only major intercity station constructed in the 21st century without loos for commuters

    • @DavidShepheard
      @DavidShepheard 2 года назад +1

They are looking at the time you are on the trains and using that as a basis for "not needing toilets".
However, there are two flaws there:
      1) Some disabled people can not wait as long for a toilet as able bodied people, so removing all support for toilets discriminnates against people and
      2) In the event of a breakdown, the time passenngers goes from "too short to need toilets" and, as an event continues, more and more able-bodied passengers will want to go to the toilet.
So the "lets save some cash by avoiding toilets, comes back to haunt both disabled and able bodies passengera, and they both will complain about being humiliated.
Given the budget for this was 15 billion pounds, I don't think that toilet provision would have been a signficant extra expense.
We should avoid making the same miistake, when we build Crossrail-like projects for other cities and Crossrail 2 in London.

    • @sihollett
      @sihollett 2 года назад +2

There's several new lavatorial facilities at the new stations, especially disabled loos (Whitechapel and TCR are only disabled loos). A few of them appear in the background of the videos.
Canary Wharf is very much not an intercity station, but it is the one of the new ones lacking directly nearby toilets. Blame Canary Wharf Group for that as they built the station. Pretty sure there's some public ones nearby.
