      It's not a straight line mission because he isn't attempting to go in a straight line. You are allowed to deviate from the line a certain amount yes, but what defines a straight line mission is that you keep as close to the line as possible "in spirit". If you are just trying to stay within a certain boundary and not the line, then that's just walking. Still it's an impressive walk in terms of "real miles" covered.

    I really liked this video. Ok its maybe not a straight line mission from a purists perspective, but I found it an interesting snapshot of a day in the life of London. Highlights the massive variations between the suburbs of outer London, the urban inner city then back through the suburbs again to the boundary with semi rural Kent. Looks like a massive amount of planning went into it and a good bit of endurance!

    • @andyandy5978
      @andyandy5978 2 года назад +14

      To clarify, that’s not a criticism, just a suggestion. As you said in your intro, the rules on these type of missions are open to be set by the person doing the mission. As you are clearly doing something different from the ‘traditional’ SLM, you set different rules to GroWizard- always using public routes/land. I only meant by using a cycle, it would make it easier to do repeat runs to try and score a narrower run- since that’s the point of the mission (it’s not a walking endurance challenge). Good effort on the algorithm, looking forward to hearing more about it. Great editing and narrative.

    Nice work! Many of houses at the start of your video would have been built by the Metropolitan Railway Company. Unlike other early railway companies, who bought land for railways, built the railways and then sold off the excess, they wrangled a deal to build both railways and houses. Many of their old (pre-London Underground) stations had estate agent offices in them. They would sell Londoners on the idea of "moving to the country" and the people who bought their houses also became their passengers. So they made money at both ends.
    They pushed the suburbs further and further from London, with this scheme, until the counties around London rebelled and lobbied for house building near London to be banned.
    Ironically, the Green Belt laws made countryside stations less economically viable than ones surrounded by lots of houses and after the London Transport Passenger Board took over the Metropolitan Railway and was ordered to run London Underground for profit, they closed down the northern extremes of the Metropolitan Railway, rather than electrify lines going to places with low populations.
    Many of the railways out of London, that stop before exiting London were planned to be longer and got cut back because it was considered to be pointless to build stations on land where houses were banned.
    Anyhoo the TLDR version is that, if it was not for long dead NIMBYs, you would have been doing a much longer walk, as Metroland massively expanded London at a rapid rate.
