    "I get the feeling this is Haruhi's fault."
    Isn't it ALWAYS Haruhi's fault?
    Also, I loved the Endless Eight. It truly drives home Haruhi's insanity, childishness, and arrogance... and it's great. I think a big part of that love is KyoAni's sheer LOVE shining through... you don't remake the same episode several different times if you didn't love something.
    The movie kicked me. Hard. I grew up feeling worthless... That single moment where the realization hits Kyon. It hit me really, really hard.

    I really like the scene where Koizumi starts talking about "bloody battles" and "politics" that are happening behind the scenes. I honestly 100% believe him, and his typical "cheer" really hits different when you consider that he may merely be in a constant performance mode for Haruhi. I personally wouldn't put that scene of his in the same category as Nagato's 3 minute monologue to Kyon.

    • @Totaraum
      @Totaraum  2 года назад +8

      Oh, I love koizumi. But as a first time viewer with no context, I didn’t find much reason to care about the scene. Everything clicks when you go back taking into account the kind of dude he is. I also think it’s super interesting that koizumi tends to only tell the truth when talking about haruhi to kyon, he just leaves a bunch of stuff out. On the other hand he’s willing to lie through his teeth about everything else

    • @jayevans6146
      @jayevans6146 Год назад +5

      I wanted to see the "bloody battles" and "politics" he was talking about and implying during that scene so bad. Especially since he was talking about them while pretty much just chilling on a small town bridge with Kyon, but made it sound so sinister and mysterious.

    If you were wondering, The Dissappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya currently sits at the third longest animated movie of all time. Behind Final Yamato, and In this corner of the world.
    Actually want to add that the only reason the other two pass it in length is because they have extended editions.
    At the films' original lengths, they are not as long as the Dissappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya.
    With these facts in mind, I personally consider Haruhi the longest Animated film of all time, because it didn't even need an extended edition to make it to 3rd place.

Ignoring that condition makes it the third longest animated movie of all time, being beaten by the 70mm film of "Final Yamato" in second place and the 2019 extended version of "In This Corner Of The World" in first place.

    I love the Endless 8 it's one of my favorite arcs. The twist makes it worth it and it was perfectly written. They built it up in all the episodes and it was so obvious in retrospect. They probably should have done 5 or 4 loops instead of 8 but I'm happy with what we got. It seems like you missed the point. It wasn't about the summer homework. It was just an excuse to spend time with them because she loves them.

    Broadcast order is honestly more fun to watch because episodes that happen later chronologically foreshadow events that happen before then.
    For example, the very first episode (the shitty film they make later in the year) has Yuki cast as an alien, Mikuru as a time traveler, and Koizumi as an esper (a person with psychic powers btw). It’s a dumb, fun episode that introduced us to the cast and the setting, even if it was hard to follow for most of the episode. Four episodes later when the SOS Brigade is first formed, we get confirmation in real life that Yuki is an alien, Mikuru is a time traveler, and Koizumi is an esper, and that Haruhi is some sort of god that needs to be watched over.
    There are other examples like this like Haruhi’s off-hand comment about ponytails in the baseball episode, Yuki’s glasses and Asakura disappearing at some point, and Haruhi trying out for every club and being awesome at it.
    I get why people don’t like broadcast order, but it’s the little details like that that make this such a fun story to watch.

    • @Totaraum
      @Totaraum  2 года назад +3

      I totally get where you're coming from, and viewing the show like this on a repeat watch through sounds like a good time. For a first viewing, however, I feel like I personally was confused enough watching chronologically. I started in the broadcast order but halfway through the first episode I switched over to chronological because I just wanted the show to make sense.

    • @HighwayStar17
      @HighwayStar17 2 года назад +2

      @@Totaraum For sure, I watched it chronologically first because I didn't even know the broadcast order existed until after. To literally anyone who doesn't know better, broadcast order looks like a mess, but it's definitely a lot more fun on a rewatch since you can pick out the details that lead up to the finale.

    Oh my god.... You basically incapsulated my thoughts and feelings of rewatching haruhi (after a 5 year break from anime) 10 years since I first watched it (I was 7)... So many anime titles I've watched, yet the one that actually struck a chord was haruhi. And while the anime itself was all fun and games - the movie is the one that lingered. Perhaps I was too young to understand Kyon's, Yuki's, Haruhi's and everybody else's arcs and motives then, even am too young now, but now I understand that all the issues the main cast goes through in the anime and the movie have been following me throughout my adolescence. And you put them all to words so perfectly. Perhaps that is the sole reason this anime has been following me my whole life. And watching this video made me extremely emotional, perhaps for nostalgia, but perhaps because of my new-found understanding and appreciation for the anime. I wish this anime demanded a little less commitment from the viewer, so it would be very recommendable to my friends who just got into anime. Although, the commitment is a whole experience that makes you enjoy the movie, cherry on top, much much more. But new anime viewers, at least in my experience, are not ready to commit. And it is so unfortunate that this anime faded into oblivion. In the early 2010s, you mentioned haruhi - everybody knew it to some extent. Anime was way more niche. With anime becoming more popular and attracting numerous new viewers, it is extremely rare to find a person who knows haruhi. I hope that with the new novel volume, something special awaits and the anime will have the resurgence it deserves. And you, dear youtuber, deserve way more appreciation! I didn't expect this video to have this little views... You articulate your thoughts very well and the editing and pacing of the video is very pleasing to watch! Thank you, again. This was a truly enjoyable video.

    16:35 I think it's worth mentioning the deliberate cues that Haruhi has grown because of her reconciliation with Kyon and leading up to the Arts Festival performance.
    During the rest of the filming, Haruhi begins regularly complementing everyone after each scene finishes filming. This kind of thing happened exactly zero times during filming that occurred before the big argument.
    The big one, however, is when she orders Kyon to pull an all-nighter. This order would be typical Haruhi, until she follows up by stating she'll stay with him to see it through together.
    And of course, the final bit is her performance with the band, and learning the reason she was up there.
    It's a growth sequence with multiple beats.

      If you like the OST and also classical music you'll love this, it's a one hour concert that elevated my appreciation of Satoru Kosaki's work to another level. I too love the science talk, in fact, I get mad at other anime that use it but just in a half assed way (eg. bunny girl senpai, imo). Some just throw loosely related to the story concepts at the audience in what I see as an attempt to sound smart. While reading the novels it's fun to take note of what the author has been interested in lately. As for the last book, dna computing genuinely surprised me. It sounds so fake but is actually real and pretty cool as well. Totaraum different perspective showed me that a good piece of media can be loved by two different persons for totally different reasons.

      So when Disappearance released it was the second longest animated film at 162 minutes. Kyoto Animation purposefully kept the film 1 minute shorter than the longest animated film, Final Yamato, out of respect, as that film had held the record since 1983. Sadly, Final Yamato lost the record to In This Corner of the World in 2019 which is 168 minutes long.

    Ironically, the part of the series I rewatch the most is Endless Eight. Not joking. There is something captivating about that arc-the summer fun, the despair of escaping that repetitive loop… how strange we are as beings to be horrified of repeating fun over and over across centuries… picking out the subtle animation and voice acting difference between episodes, feeling a tiny bit what the characters endured. It is understandable that most dismiss it as pretentiously artsy. Yes, it is what killed the show’s popularity. But it was special in ways I still haven’t figured out how to express.

These characters really showed some actual growth by the end of it all. I have to admit it was the endless 8 arc that truly solidified Haruhi Suzumiya as a top notch classic in my mind. As much as I enjoyed the emotional ride that the climatic choice in Disappearance, I can’t help also seeing that scene through the practical eyes as a father, husband and soldier. Haruhi was the most dangerous entity in the universe. She was worse than a walking nuclear bomb, and was a hormonally, borderline sociopathic teenage girl at that. Removing her powers and leaving them removed is what any sane person would have done, no matter what the music swept us towards. We could only enjoy and approve Kyon’s choice because we don’t have to live with the consequences.

  • @Sebastian_Niedermeier
    @Sebastian_Niedermeier 19 дней назад

    I saw Haruhi when it originally aired. Personally I loved the endless eight. Everybody knows how time loop episodes work. They have to figure out how to escape the time loop by doing something important, something big. So you exspect them to try different stuff until they finally escape the time loop. With Yuki being aware of every iteration, they can easily ask her what they've already tried and failed to leave the time loop and the story wrights itself. This never happens. I and my friends sat there every week waiting for someone to get the smarts to do something about their situation. Everything for this is set up. They are aware of the time loop, they discuss it, Yuki is not affected of memoryloss. Go ahead. Try something, anything - ask Yuki sensible questions - for that matter Yuki tell them about the time loop on day one or whatever. We had like twenty version of how the events could onfold and in the end nothing happened. Nah, they just have to do homework. Nothing big or important, just homework. Two months of built up and increasing tension, each episode just different enough to exspect something to happen that never does and the big resolution is homework. This was awesome. Don't get me wrong we were extremely pissed and disapointed but after a week had past all we could do is laugh, because it's so surreal and funny.
    And to me that's the essence of Haruhi. It's not predominately comedy or even satire - it's trolling. Don't trust me? In the span of like two episodes we get an alien, a timetraveller, and an esper - all of these should have immense plot relavence. They don't, they're there because Haruhi likes it that way - but she'll never figure that out, though we'll tease it constantly. Also all of them have different theories on what Haruhi is and suggest conflicting motivations for the other members, and this immense plot threat is never resolved or even followed up on. More examples of trolling? A murder mistery without a murder. The broadcast order. A baseball game with the world at stakes. Literally any plotline. And after Haruhi ends we get a final episode with the Wonderful Disappearence movie. And you know somebody must have asked - What if he'd stayed in that world? Well, here you are the Disappearence of Yuki-chan - way better than a third season, ain't it? And what starts out as a boring romcom, then develops into an arc where Yuki seemingly has become her old self again and you can only wonder about the implications, does this connect to the other show? No, it's pretty much undone immediately and now where back to the boring romcom and there's no real climax in the end. Also Yuki confessed her love, but it wasn't even really her, and she doesn't remember, so they never even get together - in a romcom! But wait there must be some resolution, please. Please have a point? Well ok, here you go have a final OVA. This will probably solve at least some dangling plot threats yes?
    Hell no, It's endless eight, but this time without the time loop. Endless eight, Again! The point that Yuki-Chan built up to was Endless Eight again! F****!!!!
    If this isn't trolling I don't know what is. And that's why Haruhi is awesome!

    1. The show serves the narrative of a sci fi, slice of life club show, and sardonic self aware comedy all at once with every line and situation
    2. If kyon is a viewer character parallel, haruhi is a director character parallel in a literal and figurative sense. The relationship between kyon and haruhi explores the relation ship between an omnipotent show runner director and the viewers who love the show and give their response to it.
    There's too many little things that point towards this. Haruhi even says " I'm the director " during an episode. It could be said that our response to a piece of media will affect the mood of a show director and by extension the rest of a show. I might sound like a crackhead here but that's what I see with this show and it's the most mind blowing meta piece of media ever there are so many layers to it. Brilliant franchise!

    • @Totaraum
      @Totaraum  Год назад

      The meta aspect of haruhi is by far my favorite out of any piece of media. To add to your theory, Haruhi is even listed as the "ultra director" in the credits for the show lol.

    This video was the last push that got me to try Haruhi. Only four episodes in so far (2009 order), but it's nevertheless been quite an enjoyable start. I agree with your takes to the extent that I can at this point. Already I sense that I'm hooked on Haruhi in a way I haven't felt for an anime in probably at least a year, at least not in the "I _need_ to watch at least one episode per day" sense.
    The anime I've watched over the past year has either been "watch an episode thrice a month" (Yuyushiki, Servant x Service, etc.), or "thrice a week but only with my mom" (Joshiraku, Kinmoza, etc.), or "save this for when I'm having an existential crisis at 3:00 AM and really just need to chill" (ARIA). Never anything that I've been super excited to watch each and every day, so Haruhi is pretty refreshing.

    Honestly, Haruhi is the thinking man's favorite anime. To me, it will ALWAYS encapsulate what made that period, and perhaps all of anime, so utterly special to me. For all the seasonal junk and overhyped trash that comes around every few months, Haruhi is one of those shows that really stands the test of time, and somehow only gets better the longer I spend with it. The aesthetics, the story, the characters, and everything that comes with it beat most anything coming out today or in the past few years.

    Most (all?) official streaming services show the series in chronological order. I find this insane is because episodes of season 2 are mixed in with season 1. They aired several years apart, so season 1 had to stand on its own, but experiencing it that way is difficult. In chronological order, the endless 8 is split across the 2 seasons. Absolute madness.
    Maybe I give too much deference to airing order, esp having not watched it through that way yet (though I intend to shortly). Since watching Kara no Kyoukai (a series that was produced and presented out of order with obvious intent), I've decided to assume the author chose nonlinear order on purpose, and I'm willing to trust that they didn't do so just to screw with me. I'm curious to see what they had to say.

    I TOTALLY disagree with your take about Adventures of Mikururu-chan not being fit as a first episode, I think it's actually the perfect first episode. the audience gets introduced to the idea that Yuki, Mikuru, and Koizumi could be associated with the types of extraordinary figures they play as in the movie, and so when Yuki reveals herself as an alien to Kyon, it kind of hits a lot more. been watching this with two people lately and the person who I watched broadcast order with was left a lot more in the dark which made plot points a lot more surprising and interesting, and I think the first episode is due some credit for that!

      @@Totaraum So, It was a rather rainy sick day in the middle of June 2020.
      I was watching through the entire series in one sitting as much as possible *In sort of chronological order, I didnt have funi at the time and could only watch it on youtube*
      I didnt know anything besides the fact the movie was amazing. So i powered through.
      I then hit the first Episode of endless 8. I watched it. Now This may seem weird but to truly understand my experience i have to explain everything that was happening that day to give the full experience.
      As I was watching, I was at first watching in my room on my phone. I was sitting in my office chair, Around the pool scene I had a bad stomache ache and used the restroom. During the cecada/Firework scene i headed out towards my dining room. In which my mother would also enter the room while calling her mother.
      Eventually near the end of the episode i went back to my room while grinding out a game on my 3ds.
      One last bit of information, It was incredibly bard to tell exactly what day it was due to how sick i was, Even though this all only happened in one day.
      So i que the next episode, Im in my room, this time on my bed and i notice, The episode is both the same yet different, But i didnt care and kept watching.
      I feel a bad stomach achr, Restroom, then i head to the dining room but this time im sitting in a different chair. My mother already in the dining room on a call, but talking and saying reletivly the same things as last time but a bit different.
      Then near the end i return to my room back on office chair, Grinding out the same mission on my 3ds game.
      This repeated throughout every single episode of endless eight, At the same points in the episode, Each time irl being slightly different but ultimatly the same.
      It was a very strange viewing experience, and yes i watched all 8 episodes back to back to back. I still remember laying down afterwards making sure it really was all in the same day.

    i don't fully vibe with the watch order thing. like, both orders aren't accurate to the light novels anyway. both the movie and the live alive are in the sixth novel, 4 books after the sigh arc. so technicially either of the regular watch orders aren't really how they were meant to be viewed.
    i think both have their pros. the pros to chronological are obvious, but i love some stuff about the original order. not all of it makes sense to me (what is added by interrupting remote island syndrome with a random episode?), but i really loved getting to the baseball episode and realizing that the movie was actually a microcosm of the the story of the show. cool way to balance the big 6 part first book and the more slice of life chapters.
