Yea honestly, she’s one of the most energetic, carefree, and down to earth characters I know and that’s why she’s one of my favorite. I want to be like that, but with a LITTLE MORE EMPATHY.
I'm sure you already know this, but my favorite thing similar to Haruhi being listed as the "Ultra-Director" is that on the back of the Clannad Blu-ray, it says it is presented by the Hkarizaka Private High School Drama Club. Love those little Easter eggs.
This show is so meta and layered, the scene with kyon swinging at haruhi after she gets moe chick drunk works on a technical level with the the way they use angles and color along with the music to build tension, on a surface level with kyon wanting to smack sense into a bad person, and on the deeper level with the esper, time traveler and alien all getting something out of it. I didn't pick up on that until you pointed it out this show is god tier, no pun intended.
I did not know I needed this video, nor that I needed an answer to "what is HS's best quote?". But clearly I did need this and now I feel enlightened. Thank you Totaraum.
Rather than just listing a bunch of quotes, you went above and beyond and dug into the complexity of Haruhi's character. As a long-time Haruhi fan I really enjoyed this video. Hard to pick a favorite quote when there are so many good ones. If I had to pick, I'd go with the exchange between Haruhi and Kyon at the end of Live Alive. It's not as memorable as God Knows or Haruhi's opening monologue, but seeing Haruhi transition from being contemplative to enthusiastic always makes me smile.
Thank you! I’m happy to hear you enjoy it. It’s also nice to see that conversation get more love. I remember before I saw disappearance this scene gave me the feeling that maybe haruhi’s antics have been fun and interesting the whole time
I think what I love about this show is exactly how complex, yet simple the characters and topics in it are. Despite being a funny slice of life where the main character basically tries everyday to fix a friend's error whichis kinda of a common trophe, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya subtle talks about apathy, loneliness, coming to accept our surroundings and that our view of the world isn't the only one that exists, coping mechanisms and, most importantly, the struggles of growing up. Both Kyon and Haruhi struggle with it but approach it in complete opposite ways, and yet none of them is doing it "good" or "bad" until they meet and are able to balance each other. The reason why this show is so important to me is because it approaches such important themes in the most mundane way possible, despite being basically a sci-fi anime: making the protagonist powerless and the main cause of problems unaware of them is a brilliant way of mixing together the normal life we all experience with fantasy, resulting in a narrative that's much more easy for the viewer/reader to connect with. Sorry for my bad English, it isn't my first language, but I really wanted to express myself on this topic. I really love this ligth novel/anime, to the point where I can say it is one of my favourites piece of media ever. My favourite quote is actually from Kyon during episode 5, right after Haruhi's monologue about being special. "The passing train gave me a moment to think about my response. Should I voice an opposing viewpoint? Maybe I should wax philosophical about her dilemma. "I see." I must be getting melancholic if that's the best I could come up with."
The sighs arc is really Haruhi at her worst, left completely unchecked and enabled in her wild imagination. Also love how the festival song references the end of the melancholy arc when they're in the closed space.
Real school life, at least in the uk, is horrible which is why i gravitated to this show so much and just adds to the reason why its my second favourite anime of all time.
I think the message of the anime is to make the most of your time as a young person. I live by this idea and I'm trying to have my best life as a university student before becoming a boring adult.
Since your last video about the Haruhi anime, my mom has also gotten into the series. She was almost smitten by it just like I was. Although I did have to hug her when Ryouko Asakura did the thing in Melancholy Pt. 4. Too scawy.
Please do! As much as I love the show it tends to make others pretty frustrated, but just know that regardless of how you think of it it's worth getting to the end so you can watch Disappearance. It's one of the greatest films ever made and my personal favorite. I guarantee you won't regret watching
I've now just finished rewatching Haruhi again (so i can finally watch Disappearance) and I have to say watching this show makes me feel... something. I genuinely don't know what the feeling even is, but it's something I have only ever gotten from watching Haruhi. It's really weird.
i just found this video and i love it so muchhhh more people need to understand Haruhi like you do you highlighted like most of the reasons she's my favorite character ever.... also the conversation under the tree i completely understand its also one of my fave moments !!
3:20 both in anime and novels everyone seems to read kyon's mind and I thought I was just tripping while reading and watching it. But apparently it's true. They can read his mind
What a beautiful video. I think this definitely helped me decide for certain that Live Alive is my favorite episode of the show. It's a great cooldown from the tension filled Sigh arc, and it vividly shows the light at the end of Haruhis character development for the first time. I rewatched/reread the series a few years ago and I was uncomfortably astonished with how different this character I had grown to love so much was originally behaving, especially in the first few episodes. I was thinking I was going crazy until this episode. I was like "Holy shit. There's Haruhi. This is the Haruhi I remember. Where have you been girl???" And her character development only gets better after there, especially if you've read the novels. But at the same time, as you said, it doesn't feel out of character at all, which is so hard to pull off and a true testament to how 3-dimensional she is. This is my first and favorite anime and its so nice to see content creators essentially echo why I hold it so close to my heart ^^
Couldn’t have said that better myself, thanks for sharing! I feel like the more thought you put into haruhi’s character the more likable she becomes. Also thank you for the kind words
"I wonder if they're real. Martians. I can't see anyone on the surface right now, but I bet they're a reserved race of beings that have to live underground. Whenever us humans are finally able to land on mars, I'm sure the martians will pop out from wherever they're hiding and say something like 'Welcome to Mars'." I like how in episode 5 of the Endless Eight. The camera focuses on Nagato when she says this. I originally thought that it was throwaway Haruhi banter, but when seeing Nagato there gave me a major "oooohhh, thats what it was about" epiphany.
The grass flying back at Haruhi's face when she throws it at Kyon is sometimes interpreted as proof that Kyon is actually the one with powers, but in truth I think it shows Haruhi growing as a person and accepting not everything can or should go her way. Just like she has to accept she didn't pull a perfect performance to help the girls at the festival.
i started the anime back in january and read the most recent light novel a few days ago so it's super nice to be going through these videos. it's good analysis and fun to live through these moments that brought me into the franchise again :)
This is probably a bit off topic, but I would like to draw attention to how diverse Haruhi's wardrobe is. From boyish things to feminine dresses. And all these things look very beautiful. For some reason, I especially liked Haruhi's outfit like white pants and a blue blouse from the episode about the incident on the island. I know it sounds strange, but I can't help but pay attention
Fuck, I have several different thoughts here! First, IT ALL CONNECTS TO BASEBALL - I guess the reason why Haruhi felt down was because she saw Mizore throw up on the mound. Second, god fuck I wish someone could glare at me really close to my face and make me all hot and bothered LMAO (>///
I straight up don't even remember the origin of the Mizore throwing up on the mound thing. Those quotes you picked out are all good ones, and I didn't have a quote from disappearance because Haruhi didn't do much in that movie. If we're talking kyon here, his monologue where he makes his final choice would automatically win. Nothing else even comes close
6:45 I also know this thought. But it's not true for me anymore. Sometimes I wish it was, but noone in the world seems to care. In some way it's nice because that means I really am special in some way, but it also means, I have to do it because I'm the only one who cares about that shit and is willing to put work into it.
I'll like this video just because I was craving some haruhi and your video popped up Good to see that this anime is still active topic on youtube. I am gonna cry 😭😭😭. Haruhi for life.
"Ill say that the whole club was planning on bleep bleeping her!" or the dub "Then I'll tell everyone at school that all you geeks ganged up on her and bleeped her." One of the most unapologetic and outrageous Haruhi thing Haruhi said.
I thought real hard and came to the conclusion that I don't hold any of the Haruhi quotes dear to my heart at all. Meanwhile, I can name, like, fifteen dope Kyon quotes right off the top of my head. And I like the girl more than I not. Huh. Maybe it's because she is way more of a side character than I realized. Or maybe it's because all my favorite moments of her are not dialogue-centric at all. It's way more about all the body language and mannerisms than anything spoken, from her dope-ass reveal in episode 00 onward. In fact, outright muting Haruhi's exсited drivel for Kyon's cynical monologue at the end of the said episode is the microcosm of the show right there.
