The writer of Haruhi's birthday is on Dec. 19, a day after the events of Disappearance on the 18th which I struggle to consider a coincidence. What may be a coincidence though is that the computer game they play is called 'Day of Sagittarius' while the author is a Sagittarius too.

16:57 About Rosenkrantz and Guildenstern are Dead, the plot of the novel is about the two titular characters becoming somewhat meta-aware. They have their own thoughts and agency that is completely different to how they behave in Hamlet, but when the actual plot of Hamlet comes around they can't help but play their role. This causes them to get really existential in their conversations when they aren't playing out their Hamlet roles. I always took it's inclusion as the play Koizumi was doing when he wasn't helping the SOS Brigade make the movie to be a character hint. Maybe Koizumi is a very different person when he isn't around the SOS Brigade.
Also Haruhi Hunting just being pachinko still hurts.

Thanks for the deep dive. You brought to my attention a few references that I had missed. Dammit! I should have spotted the 'Linda, Linda, Linda' ref. Great little film.
On the subject of Nagato's books, two more titles worth mentioning are 'I Want To Kick You in the Back' by Risa Wataya and 'Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World' by Haruki Murakami.
Yuki is seen reading 'I Want To Kick You in the Back' in the latter part of the episode 'Someday in the Rain,' the last episode in the chronological order. Essentially it's about a girl who bullies a boy she likes, as she finds it difficult to overcome her sense of loneliness and express her affection for him, whilst the boy is obsessed with a fashion model. Considering Yuki's growing affection for Kyon, her sense of loneliness and Kyon's obsession with Mikuru, it's possible that the book's theme resonated with Yuki. Although she doesn't kick Kyon in the back, she certainly turns his world upside down with the coming alteration to the world, effectively alienating Mikuru (excuse the pun) in the process. It's worth remembering that this episode immediately precedes the Disappearance film. How telling then that Yuki leaves the book behind in the club room, directly in front of the sleeping Kyon. Considering how tidy Yuki usually is, did she deliberately leave the book for Kyon to read? If he had then he might have gained a little insight into Yuki's frame of mind.
In 'Disappearance' the human Nagato is seen reading 'Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World.' The book explores the questions of identity, alternative worlds and human consciousness. If you read the book then its relevance to the 'Disappearance' story is uncanny. Once again, the pre-human Nagato had left this book (for her human variation to read) as a clue for Kyon, in my opinion.

i think the rosencrantz and guildenstern are dead reference is actually really good foreshadowing for itsuki as a character and his beliefs- especially if you look at the character he’s playing (guildernstern). honestly if you even just go look up the themes of the play or analyses of it, it’s very easy to tie back to tmohs and itsuki as a character. and possibly even the agency. considering it was also specifically stated that version of hamlet is the one they were doing in the novels- and itsuki even winks at kyon at the end of it all. there’s lots of little things like that in haruhi that fo deeper the more you look into it

Jhon Smith isnt just the most common name in English, it is also used for when you dont want to give someone your name to remain anonymous.
Kyon introduces himself as Jhon Smith because of this, since giving his real name would clue her in that Kyon is a time traveler.

Regarding the abyss comment, "endless eight is a masterpiece" : I 100% agree! And as anyone (I mean anyone normal), I absolutely HATED it, with all my guts, the first time I watched it.
I sweared, I chivered, I shouted (virtually) at the cast for "butchering that great saga". I couldn't resist the temptation to fast forward some of the moments. And yet, you still can't help but watch most of it. Once it's over, you feel a great relief, but not the kind of forgiving relief, just "thanks god, you wasted so much of my time, let's forget about all this and let's keep going with what remains of this still great story".
Years later, I rewatched the entire Haruhi anime & movie serie. But I didn't skip a SECOND of the arc. It's like a (very) sour candy. Or actually, more like a sour party cake made by the greatest chef of all time. Once you are used to the taste, you actually can enjoy it. And god it's so good! You don't even understand anymore what it was like, why you couldn't appreciate it, what was wrong with you and your too young soul and senses to be able to appreciate such a masterpiece.

There is actually a manga doujinshi adaptation of the gender bending forms of S.O.S. brigade members and the haruhi storyline. Its called: "The Gender Bend of Haruhi Suzumiya". But now days its really hard to find.
Also, the name "John Smith" its an american form of "anonymous" person. It is usually used on medical wards to call people who are yet to find their name. So they use "John Smith" for a generic codename. It is the equivalent of how hispanic people say "Juan del Pueblo" to refer to someone with unknown name or origins. Even Kyon says so himself: "I say it because I want to remain anonymous."

Depends how far you've read/watched already. If you've seen 'Disappearance' then you can continue reading from book 5 'The Rampage of Haruhi Suzumiya.' Although this covers the Endless Eight story and The Day of Sagittarius, it concludes with the excellent 'Snowy Mountain Syndrome,' which is set immediately after 'Disappearance.' No Spoilers, but it's a little creepy.

I would go with the Light Novels, Its the source material and being a novel it has all of kyon's inner thoughts and conveys a lot more detail.

Dudeee you forget important ones.... First theory that, kyon is the actually god. He created haruhi for his loneless. During disaperance movie, nagato couldnt change him because she had no power for change "real god", she needed his permision. That is why she set the New reality. Haruhi took kyon to New reality and out of others because she was created for kyons loneless and didnt need any body else. At the first episode, kyon Said, he know that espers, aliens and time travelers are not real but he wished that they are real. Kyon also like "weird" girls. Second theory is, disaperance of nagato yuuiki chan is not simple spin off but reconstructed reality for, "what if kyon chose simple life". Nagato reconstructed entire reality for kyons decision. Nagatos New personality after car incident and Nagato during the movie is the exactly same people. But crushing reality.
