Sixtyfiveford, You always get a well deserved thumbs up from me. If the motor coupler is good, then its usually the clutch. Replace clutch or tighten the pads against the drum by using spacer washers. See video: clutch reconditioning whirlpool washer by the appliance man. Thank you for your presentation; always top shelf.

Is there a way to tell, before taking everything apart, if it's the coupling or the clutch? My coupling looks intact and is spinning pretty well, but the drum doesn't turn to wash or spin. Searching a bit, usually if the coupling isn't the issue it's the clutch. And I wondered if the plastic part of the couple connected to the transmission was worn out and causing the issue. Seem like the coupling 65ford links to would be good since it has a metal core. I think I replaced the coupling some years ago, but haven't had time to scrounge through household repair receipts to see when or what I bought. Guess I have to take off the motor/transmission to get to the clutch anyway so I'll be checking the coupling first anyway. And they don't seem to cost too much so I might replace it while I'm in there.

@@stewartbruce2409 I replaced the clutch and motor coupler, and reset the motor by unplugging for a moment the plugging it and lifting the lid 6 times within 12 seconds, as whirlpool instructions say.
Still no spin. Pump is good. It empties. It agitates. Just won't spin.

I'm a senior lady who likes to repair things like my motorcycle, washing machine, car, microwave, etc., myself, too. Another thing that helps me in addition to these great RUclips videos is to take pictures, with a digital camera or my cell phone, each step of the way as I take something apart so I can use the pictures as a guide to reassemble whatever I'm working on.

Hey, just wanted to say, you saved me lots of money. We didn't have money to call repairman, last time cost $200. This time I got the part for $25, I couldn't wait for Ebay. The new parts have a metal insert collar so it won't round. But it is swedged on, so you have to use a socket to drive it on. Make sure you put it on the Transmission side, shorter shaft. Thanks again for your help.

Have to tell you. This video made it SOOOO easy to check everything with my 30 year old Whirlpool washer that wasn't draining or spinning. I had already diagnosed the lid switch issue and bought the replacement. Before I re-assembled the unit to test it, I used this video to make sure the pump housing and coupler were not in play just in case. Thanks.

Dude! Thanks so much for this simple, well explained video. Saved me spending minimum $250 for a used replacement washing machine. although I did overtighten the screws at first, causing the washing machine to make a high pitch noise then I could smell burning rubber/plastic. I backed out the screws a few rotations and voila! No more high pitched noise or burning smell.

Great video, I have never seen a "square" motor in a washer, but I have not looked under our Kenmore washer, our washer is about a late 80's very early 90's model.
It works good but when it spins it will shake our whole mobile home...LOL.
We have to balance the load of course but even than it shakes and yes I did level it.
What I had to do is jam a 2X4 and screw in down tight againced the side of the washer tight with the dryer.

For now, I can just put it through another cycle, but I know that solution won't last long! I just went through this about a month and a half ago. One youtube guy was saying it is the lid switch, another saying it is the motor and another saying it is the capacitor and then another saying it is the coupler. My washer stopped washing in the middle of the cycle so I had to drain the water out and take the wet clothes out. Lid switch was good, the capacitor was good (went to a parts shop and the nice lady checked the capacitor with a capacitor tester, you don't use a resistance meter on this as it does not test it right) so the guy told me that it is probably the coupler ($25.00) so I bought it with the understanding that I could bring it back if the problem is something else. When I took everything apart (just like your machine) the coupler did not look that bad but I did not look very closely at the motor piece, I was looking mostly at the black rubber part so I changed everything out. When I tried this the discharge hose popped off (just changed out the hose last year) and flooded the room. I stopped the machine and put a worm gear clamp on there so it would not pop off again. Everything ran fine but a couple of times there was a burning smell but no fire or smoke so I am not sure what that could have been. I need to watch more of your videos, they will save me time, money and aggravation. Thanks for what you are doing.

Ebay is your best bet for finding parts and appliance sites will help you find the part number you need. It may just be your lid switch.

  • @sixtyfiveford
    @sixtyfiveford  11 лет назад

The little tab that depresses the door switch most likely barely depresses it. The vibration of the washer can lift the lid and kick the switch off. Also the lid can bow and barely hit the switch ( bend the lid back into shape and take the bow out). You can also hook the 2 wires going to the switch together to bypass it completely (unplug the machine first) or you can try putting something heavy on the lid and see if that remedies your problem.

Yeah, I checked the switch, and for good measure bypassed the switch and tried it that way with no luck. It will add water, but no agitation or draining. There are no other sounds when I move the timer in to different positions. I'd almost guess the timer selector switch is worn out, but I'm just guessing at this point. I will tear it down again tomorrow and look at the motor just to make sure.

Now that I can keep the lid open while it goes through it"s cycles I can view what's going on. I tried a load of towels and it could not muster up enough to make the drum spin. I helped it along and it did spin but not at full speed. I took towels out except for 3 and still had to help it along but this time it went full speed and accomplished a semi dry load. What now?

The vertical machines are just cheaper, that is why they are so popular here. Last I looked they are about double the price for a front loader but manufactures here are pushing to sale the front loaders more (to make more money).
I think the pieces are built out of plastic to be a weak link. I could be wrong and they could have done it to save money as well. Definitely resemble a cush drive.

I took a look at mine, and everything appeared to be mechanically OK; put it back in place, and it worked. I might order the coupler to have on hand. Thx.
A similar thing happened, as I recall, with agitator dogs. The agitator wasn't working (years ago), and I took it apart; they didn't look bad. I put it back together, and it has worked ever since.

Thanks for the video, straight to the point and easy to understand. Does the machine need resetting afterward? I've got an older Whirlpool. Since you didn't mention it here, I'll assume I don't need to reset after making any needed repairs or replacements. I think I just screwed up my machine by opening and closing it during cycles and I need to try to reset it 1st. If that doesn't work I'll ck out replacing parts. I've already replaced the agitator dogs previously when it wouldn't agitate properly. I had no idea it was so easy to replace them before looking into it! I'm sure so many people just buy new machines instead of trying to fix it. Thanks again!

Sounds like your hot water solenoid is malfunctioning. it is a little technical but not too hard.

If it spins with the timer is advanced then the coupler and all other mechanical items connected to it are fine. It sounds more like a timer problem as it seams to be getting stuck before it hits the spin cycle.
