  • This video documents steps I've taken to remove the headlight from a 2006 Lexus GS300 to replaced the ballast in a HID headlight.
    Here is the link to the "How to remove the front bumper":
    • 3rd Gen Lexus GS Front...
    On the next video, I will replace the headlight ballast.
    Similar instruction should apply to all 3rd generation Lexus GS300, which includes GS300, GS350, GS430, GS450H, and GS460.

    I've done this job yesterday following your tutorial :D My HID balast was actually fried though. Anyways, the whole connector assembly at 9:13 - you don't need to unclip the clips, you can just rotate the white lever and the whole connector disconnects. Hope this helps for someone who is doing this job in the future.

    Hey. Do you think can i replace the hid ballast without removing headlight?
    P.s. thank you for your videos!)

    • @DIYLifeSkills
      @DIYLifeSkills  2 года назад +1

      Nope. It’s tricky even with the headlight removed. But first check these: the bulbs, connection, and that it’s locked in. Best way to do this is swap bulbs from the working side.
      I my case, it turned out that it was the bulb that was going out and the ballast was just fine. These HID bulbs seem to work partially until it gets warm and the stops. So it was tricking me to think that it was the ballast.

    hello, you see the big connection ( Black and white ) if you disconnected, you do not need to take all others, i asked my friend and he tells me that

      Yup, after I took it all apart, I can see that it might be quicker to disconnect the big cable connection rather than individual ones. It’s covered in the video. Thanks.

    Is that the only way to make them brighter? By replacing the Assembly

    • @DIYLifeSkills
      @DIYLifeSkills  2 года назад +1

      The stock HID ballast is for 35W bulbs. So the ballast will probably get get and possibly burnout if go with higher watt bulb. I see some HID to LED conversion kits, and that might possibly provide brighter light. I also feel this headlight is not very bright, but it did help a little once I replaced the bulb on one side where the light was flickering and going on and off. Also, keeping your lens clean will definitely help. Oh also, this car is equipped with cool features that turns the headlight to the direction that you are turning and it's supposed to auto-level. So if the headlight is not projecting out at proper angle (i.e., pointing slightly down), then it's going to appear less bright also.

    How do you disconnect that harness I’m stuck at this stage any pointers??

    • @DIYLifeSkills
      @DIYLifeSkills  11 месяцев назад

      There are so many wiring so I’m not certain which one you are referring to. So I’m assuming you are referring to the main wiring harness. Did you watch the explanation at 8:52 time mark? I think if you get that main connector disconnected, it would save some time, but I was afraid to break it so I ended up loosening the entire thing.

    so can you just remove the air box to get to the bulb? The regular beam bulb

    • @DIYLifeSkills
      @DIYLifeSkills  Год назад

      Yeah depending on left or right bulb. Removing bulb is easy but putting it back and getting it to lock is kind of tricky because you have no direct visibly and have to do it by feel of the fingers. But that’s where you can watch the video and see how it locks in.

    • @DIYLifeSkills
      @DIYLifeSkills  Год назад

      @@MrFuchew The ballast rarely goes out, so it's highly likely it's just the bulb. Note that cheap bulbs do not last as long as the one that show in the video. My son has 2008 IS250, which uses same bulb. He didn't want to pay $50+ for just one bulb, and he got it done at a local shop for $20, including the bulb. Probably a cheap aftermarket. I've heard cheap aftermarket can last few weeks to few years, so keep that in mind.

    • @DIYLifeSkills
      @DIYLifeSkills  Год назад

      You can also swap the left and right bulbs to troubleshoot if it's ballast problem (which occurs rarely). Also, if you look inside the bulb, there is salt compound that glows to make the light. If that is bulging/swollen, then the light only works for few minutes and then turns off. So needs replacement. If you get the bulb I got, you are good for 5+ years.

    I put led’s in my 06 gs300 an got a vsc light an check engine light with my afs lights flashing on an off anyone know the reason being?

    • @DIYLifeSkills
      @DIYLifeSkills  4 месяца назад +1

      Most common reason for VSC check engine light in this car is the rubber seal on gas cap gets hardened and out of shape so it’s no longer sealing the air tight. The gas cap is designed to let air in but not let gas vapor escape. You check the engine code for free at an auto part store. If it’s P04nn basically 400 level EVAP error code, you need to replace the gas cap but replace it with OEM as aftermarket parts only lasts few years at most.

    • @DIYLifeSkills
      @DIYLifeSkills  4 месяца назад

      I caught the VSC but missed the AFS light you mentioned. For that, here is a video on AFS light.

    How long does it take to fix

    • @DIYLifeSkills
      @DIYLifeSkills  4 месяца назад +1

      I worked on it 1/2 hour here and there over multiple days because I had to stop often to study and analyze how it's going to come apart safely.
      Now that I've done it and have video on it, I had to do the same thing on my son's 2008 IS250 with nearly similar setup, it took me just under 1 hour to remove the front bumper and one headlight.
      If you are going to tackle this, have the video ready next to you, and then play, pause, and do each step of the work following the video.
      For first time, it might take you up to 2 hours to take things apart even as you watch the video.

      After ballast replacement, I’m also going to investigate the headlight pointing too low issue as well. I’ve seen others on Lexus forum talking about this, so it could be design issue. We’ll see.

      @@alb12345672 the sensors you are talking about are called headlight levelers. The issue with such age 3rd gen GSes is that headlight leveler link rods (one longer one at the front, and one shorter at the back) get either stuck, or they break, then auto leveling stops working, and AFS OFF light starts blinking. If the rods are only stuck AFS OFF light might not start blinking, but they won't be functioning correctly. Before replacing the link rods, and if they are not broken, you might want to give them a good clean and re-lubricate, that usually solves the issue, and you are good for a few more years. If they are broken you can a) have it welded, cleaned and lubricated, or b) replace. I don't know the part number for replacement, as one of mines got welded, and the other one just needed cleaning and lubrication. That is to the best of my knowledge, and I haven't done the fixing myself. But might put you in the right direction.

    • @alb12345672
      @alb12345672 3 года назад

      @@dehto5 My problem isn't they are broken, I just wish the headlights point a bit upward. This complex system with levelers exists so the headlights don't blind drivers if you have passengers in the rear.

    • @DIYLifeSkills
      @DIYLifeSkills  2 года назад

      Yeah, tell me about it. I think the problem is they worked in too many features into this headlight. It's not just headlight with bulbs anymore. It's got all kinds of features that I didn't even know: auto-leveling, headlight angles towards the direction that you turn, headlight washer, and of course HID ballast makes this more complicated as well. Nevertheless, they could've designed it such a way that you don't have to remove the bumper.
