Incredible to think this was only 12 months on from their last performance on the The Tube when they were promoting the New Gold Dream album...any yet another batch of great songs were already on their way..
I'm not qualified enough to know if Mel Gaynor is the best drummer of all time, but I've been listening to Mel Gaynor's drumming for over 40 yrs, and he is definitely my favourite drummer of all time.
Good grief this is probably the best version of "Catwalk" I've heard. They're playing so well here and all live. Incredibly tight for what is a complex song to play
I think most bands who have longevity will of coarse have thier peak creativity in the early to mid years. You just have to look at the set list of bands or artists who have been together for decades and still tour. Simple minds are no different in my own opinion. Life in a day through to Sparkle in the rain were fantastic albums which to this day stand the test of time. New gold dream still sounds as fresh and uplifting today as it did over forty year ago, brilliant production.
It's difficult to say....is this where 'the rot starting setting in' because Forbes bass was beginning to be drowned out by Gaynors thudding on the old drums....well with the superb rendition of Upon on the Catwalk ...maybe NOT! Im sitting on the fence and just enjoying this.
Poor old Forbes' bass has been TOTALLY drowned out by Liilywhite's production and Gaynor's thumping....oh yes the rot was starting to set in.....still a good tune, but NOT a patch on what had preceded it.....a tragedy, how a once great band lost their way.....
That’s your opinion....simple minds evolved and could never make another 5 new gold dreams....yes it’s my favourite era and new gold dream is the holy grail and the best album of the 80’s by far.....possibly ever......but to say that sparkle they lost there way is ridiculous .....east at Easter , waterfront , kick inside of me are some of there best tracks they ever made.......They went big and so did there audience and that’s what happens when bands grow and become huge.......the more people buy there album the more people want to see them play live lol....it’s facts son
My favourite band since about 1980 then New Gold Dream album came out and it blew my mind ❤ Mick Macneil and Derek Forbes were a huge part of the sound they created I wish they were still there along with Mel Gaynor. Over the years I must have seen them maybe 10 times last time was maybe 5 years ago.
Never ever tire of listening to simple minds..just brilliant
Saw them twice. First time march 84. Yes this was the best line up and album. Oh to be 19 again!!!
This version of Catwalk is incredible. Beyond brilliant.
It's good - but it's not Hammersmith Odeon 15/05/1984 good. That's the definitive live version for me!
@@GrahamElder10 where can I find it?

I remember watching this performance on the Tube, always a class act, brilliant live band,
Good lord these guys were good, phenomenal band in those days!
I saw them around this time. Phenomenal band.
I watched them in Spain in April 19th, 1984. Same energy! Thanks for sharing.
I had this on tape and played it so many times driving my father crazy😂
Excellent as always!! Simple Minds are superb. Loved them then and still love them now. Probably even more 🥰
i agree they are like fine wine
This is my very first time watching this. Its sound quality is superb. Mel Gaynor's drumming is one of kind.♥️🥁🔥😎

The only band etched across my heart... lifetime love affair for me
They’re so good live, and that was quick thinking and action in Jim’s part when his mic went out
Ah the memories are flooding back 🥰🏴
I miss The Tube 😭
Fantastici
Excellent session live in studio (rare in those and these days). The Tube was great, and holds special memories.

When they were gods....
Well put. They really were sublime back then.
The absolute peek of their powers superb 👌
merci :)
Best SM line up without a doubt.
Sparkle in the rain was their last great album.
I think if mel gaynor hadnt joined at new gold dream ..they would have been quite a different band
Charlie, Jim, Derek, Mick & Mel are on 🔥 here.

I would add one album (Once upon a Time) to their list of fantastic albums. I even prefer it slightly to Sparkle in the Rain.
❤
🥰🥰🥰🥰
No way, is the keyboard riff from catwalk played on the jupiter 8 ? I always thought it was on the Oberheim like in the video clip ...
Morceau phare des simple minds

You're right, but the album sounds great nevertheless. Book of brilliant things has still that Forbes' bass vibe, at least :)
Mistake to sack Derek Forbes
For futile reasons too, apparently.
100 % never as good without him.

Should have used the same producer, who understood the importance of Derek Forbes in the whole mix.@@sweetassugar69
