Agree with so many of the comments below... They were the coolest band on the planet until the disgraceful "Don't you forget about..." And became the poor man's U2... So many fabulous songs before then, I'll go to my grave remembering them as MY band, there will never be anything to touch Early Simple Minds...
This is one of the most fascinating performances I've ever seen. What a song, what a performer...The Minds were the best back then, before the mid 80's I would say. Absolutely mesmerizing! Thanks for posting.
@@suz5862 Empires and Dance was such an innovative album. After, New Gold Dream, it was all very disappointing, unless one finds hackneyed stadium rock appealing.
I also wonder about that so many times.... Sons of fascination was "the" best wave album ever made. With new gold dream they became popular and that was the end of good music
New Gold Dream WAS and IS forever STUNNING though. After New Gold Dream it went to hell minus Up On The Catwalk and Speed Your Love To Me in from 1983. They didn't get decent again until Cry in 2002. But 1979-1982 is THE most PERFECTION period for Simple Minds.
Although New Gold Dream also contain already some crappy songs such Promised you a Miracle and Like a Glittering Price....both foreboding their direction of travel. Sparkle in the Rain is not so bad. It contains pretty hard as nails songs, even different from their early work. Alive and Kicking and Co was really crap and a complete sold out to the big audience.....then the strict border for me began to mention old and new simple minds
because they came from very poor working class backgrounds and needed the money. only the middle class artists have the luxury of not selling out - mind you in from 1984 onwards everyone, even Bowie chased the dollar. If you honestly believe if you were actually talented enough to be a professional recording artist then and would have resisted then you are a bigger liar than already appears to be the case
@@CONSIDERABLYMORE1 New Order didn't sell out, something that is paying huge dividends for them now. Sticking to Factory meant they had no hope of distributing their music in anything like the same numbers as classic sell-outs, The Cure and Simple Minds. @pme2001 Lot of old people blocking the toilets with colostomy bag groans and hearing aid interference. Not that i'm the big sprightly gaffer i once was, but turning up to watch a bit of post punk/new wave and listening to powdered egg and stories of V2 rockets missing your house in the middle of Alive & kicking takes the shine out of the night. i was hoping there would be more talent than what was on the stage, but the best if found that night was a woman that resembled frank cannon.

The band never was the same after you and Mick left. Huge fan of 80s Simple Minds.

Totally agree on the time line.
I think Alive and kicking was even far worse as well as the whole album.
Total different band they became.
A shame
The best Simple Minds era. (1979 - 1985)
1980-1984

@@dominicwindram437 Totally agree.
Gawd they were sooooo good before they went crap by 1985!
hahaha was just thinking they should have split up before new gold dream, in fact Jim Kerr is a total fanny in this
They wanted to make money so they wrote radio freindly songs. Moody and experimental does not make money.
Absolutly cool ,Jim was fashion beautiful ,He moves like Jim Morrison in this video
Dark. So VERY dark. Their zenith. Wish I was in Northampton in July!
alll live synth !!! it's f.... beautiful !!!!!
Mick was a great guy. Though I only talked to him once, he had no pretentions at all. And his work is crazy good.
The cornerstone of this band was Mick. His orchestration was above all other synth players.

this is the best recorded version of this great number - pity the original tape cannot be found, remastered, and released

Magic sound magic feeling magic groove Top Class Band
The urge to be a rock star is hard to fight for any musician. Even those that claim not to give a shit.
Jolis Jim et Derek. Belle prestation
Best band in world
amazing performance
It's March 1982, they perform Promised You a Miracle at this gig
that was the days,thanx boys
Qu elle Talent qu elle charme toute ma jeunesse .💯💯👍👍😻❤🖤🖤❤❤❤❤
Oui hein excellent ❤
Jim doing The Fly, 11 years before Bono did it!!!
Zoo station is a rip off of I travel. In fact they ripped off Empires and dance.
I was just going to say the same thing lol
Heard bono on desert island discs praising the minds. One of his choices was 'someone somewhere ' - the only one ever to choose a minds track?
HOW could a band like Simple Minds who made SUCH breathtaking music in the beginning sell out as harshly as they did :-(

holy shit, this rocks
So cool and vital, you can hear the influences from warhol's factory to Neu!
How did they ever slide to the depths of cheese like Alive and Kicking?
I guess, we can always blame U2 for that :) but then, Minds had their own appetite for success and it came at a price.
J'adore cette vidéo. Jim kerr wahou sexy. Danse sensuelle oh là là

Whaaaat....the voice of Ian Curtis is never matched by anyone....
Jim was initially very much influenced by Brian Ferry....he mimics the style even.
Ok ok i meant hé sas closed not similar ....try a band called ist ist à verty good band and for sure brillantly closed To joy division ...tell me 😉
no i don;t think this would've made the theme tune to The Breakfast Club
They look, move and sound like depeche mode after 2000s
And a bit of rolling stones and the doors thrown in
Clearly you didnt see them perform this year on their 5x5 tour.....
Guess Jim watched Gary Numan's Cars clip before doing this, gazing through some tambourine, heh heh.

3:09 : for sure inspirated to Gary Numan's Cars video: the face inside tambourine. Look at 0,53 of this: ruclips.net/video/Im3JzxlatUs/видео.html .
The band that peaked at New Gold Dream, then went down the pan attempting to be self righteous.....
They peaked at "Empires and Dance", but I can still listen to NGD.
Petros
Are they trying to sound like Kraftwerk here?
Kraftwerk could never make a wall of sound like simple minds or numan , they only do little farty synth sounds
Erreur simple minds j adore depeche mode aussi 😂😂
The bono-fication of pastor Kerr started early on it seems , i always thought the instrumental side was great but Kerr really had a Jesus complex.
