@@beds139 only a coverband with the original singer and guitarist. This here was the best line up ever. Without Mick, Mel and Derek they lost their signature sound. Mick was the heart and soul with brilliant ideas. The biggest loss of all nearly 30 members.
Kerr sounds like a bad pub singer version of his younger self now. Charlie is still great, but that’s all there is. The shows are slick, professional but lacking any edge.
He was never the most technical of bass players, but he was very distinctive and an integral part of the Minds' sound. I think they were significantly depleted when he left.
This is back in an era where bands had to be able to play, technology was just coming into the era of good production better microphone better everything but still no auto-tune or pro tools, nothing that you could get away with faking it with. That's why there's so many bands from that era with songs that to this day are still iconic because they just simply had to be able to play, Derek Forbes was an insanely good bass player.
This is without a doubt their best and without Derek on bass and Mick they're your standard stadium boring rock band. 1979-1984 was in my opinion the greatest years Simple Minds had.

It's my turn to weigh in. This is Simple Minds at it's very best. Nowadays it's just Jim Kerr and Charlie Burchill trying to recapture their original form. People trying to compare this band to U2 isn't fair, because these guys started 2 albums ahead of them! Simple Minds has their own level of Being able to capture their imaginations of the listeners and if you were lucky enough to see them live then you had to have felt the energy between the band and the Crowd dancing and singing their asses off! Beautiful! I wish that I could have been there!
The American, the band in full control of every note as they rampage through it, the connection with the audience from barrier to back row..... Any kid watching this would want to pick up an instrument and form a band. What a life journey they have been on. "Anything is possible!"
I’ve never been so glued to a screen before in my life… what I would give to go back in time and be in the audience… driving bass, powerful drums, thrilling keyboards, beautiful guitar and energetic vocals. And did Jim really call Mick “the best cheek bones in history”?? Lol! ❤ I’m glad I’m not the only one thinking that 😉😅
incredible bass playing...hes a machine. Locked in the groove like nothing else and driving the whole thing forward. I mean theyre all great but he really stands out here....Excellent quality footage and sound all-round really
This is incredible. A band performing live and at their very best. The song arrangements. The band energy. The crowd reaction. All fantastic. And in those days Jim wore trousers that weren't far too tight.
This is by far my favourite Simple Minds gig footage on youtube. I loved 82-90, Brings back many memories of my schooldays in the 80's, Im so glad i lived my teen years in this wonderful Im hard pushed to single one act out in todays pile of garbage that gets commercialised today. For me personally, music died at the turn of the millenium. Wont see the likes of anything like the 80's again.

That bassline running through their rendition of Promised you a miracle is intoxicating. The drumming is phenomenonal and then you have Burchill and MacNeil insert their collective geniuses and of course throughout you have Kerr providing a sense of majesty and mischief (at once faithful and playful with the lyrics and the song's intent

You would think Simple Minds have the audience in their hands but it looks like to me the audience have the Minds in their hands!, what a great crowd they were from the day's when things were far more organic and people weren't obsessed with taking snaps on their i phones etc and observed the on stage goings on as if they were sat zombie like in front of their TV's back at home instead of wanting to be a part of something special, and this gig by the feel of it was something quite special. Great to watch and hear. Simple Minds were up for it and the audience were as well, pure magic.
permaveg I can't add anything to that, no need to. One thing is we were younger in those days and I'm not sure I'd last as long now. Also you see Jim taking a bit of a breather during one of the songs. Even he was pushing himself to the limit. Pure dead brilliant!! See ya pal.

I was there! It was a 'home game' for the Minds as the British forces still had their barracks in Westphalia. There were also tears of homesickness in the audience, heartbreaking. We were all Scots that night!

What a great gig in Dortmund at that time ! They never disappointed their fans there. A reunion for the 30 years band anniversary failed after a few moments - what a pity that these guys (Jimmy, Charlie, Mel & Mick, Derek) weren't able to reunite once again ! There will be a day when it is too late to do...hope it will be the other way round as I want to see their willingness and ability to go for an extremely desire of their fans - guys, you owe this to us ! Don't be late !

Mc Neil seemed not only to have 3 hands for all the parts he played , he was clever in his sounddesign , giving this ' excalibur castles in the myst' vibe to their songs , for strongest evidence live is rockpalast 82 switching hands from jupiter 4 to obxa to minikorg or all at the same time , i think he is one of the very few that could pull this of with great timing and sound live
The best band in the world at this point. Breathtaking performance galvanised by a hypnotised audience. The dream team of Jim, Charlie, Mel, Mick & Derek giving it large to an adoring arena. The Minds took the roof off the place that night...what an atmosphere! Still delivering the best live music on the planet!
I wish that Simple Minds would have had some Concerts in Cincinnati Ohio in the 80's. I wonder why they didn't? All the MTV Bands came and performed in or near Cincinnati Ohio. I used to work for CBS Records in Cincinnati in the early 80's and I went to a lot of Concerts. I didn't know back then that Simple Minds would have turned out to be my favorite band! I've seen a lot of Bands in Concert and these guys have been my favorite band since 2015, because of RUclips videos! Thank you for sharing this Great Performance. Thanks to RUclips I can Relive Concerts that I wasn't able to see in person! I'm 62 now, and these guys make me feel like I'm in my 20's again!
Just watched the video of them playing Pinkpop the year before this. The boys made a real leap forward in the way they filled big stages and worked big crowds: such supreme confidence! I'm sure fans are split on what SM's golden period was, and some purists may see this as the beginning of the end, but you can't take away the fact they were a world class act and had learnt their craft the hard way. Big love for SM. Happy, happy memories.

Agree with all comments re bassmaster Forbes. Mick so agile across the keys as well. I know a lot's been 'analyzed' re Mel's contributions, but I rate him as integral to SM's sound and affect - no matter the circumstances/reasons for his departure - his contributions were a necessity to this band's DNA. An American who 1rst heard you as a High schooler in 10th grade in '79 - you remain a piece of my DNA. Keep on, keepin' on.
Just found this video. I’ve been a fan since I first discovered the band late 70s. Having watched them perform live down the years, and certainly compared to so many of their contemporaries and modern acts, watching this reminds me that the Minds most outstanding quality is that they have 100% commitment to GIVING EVERYTHING live. 💥

Totally agree. Mick MacNeal was extraordinary brilliant. Made the sound. Derek Forbes amazing popping on base stood out. These two guys made Simple minds. Once Derek Forbes was sacked, it went downhill, unfortunately.
This is absolutely electrifying. Most definitely the best and most inventive band of that time. I used to listen to Sparkle In The Rain and New Gold Dream constantly, and then got into their earlier music. So exciting to see this when they were at their absolute peak. My band Paint and Copter's Miyako video/song recently was compared to them and I am beyond flattered. Still a revelant sound. Thanks for this.
I saw them in Boston w/ China Crisis 84... I've been to a lot of live bands- but for some reason the first time I saw SM in a midsized venue- just fantastic with Forbes and Gaynor intact
I love Simple Minds to this day, but let's be honest, these were the glory days. I still think the band miss the energy and passion that Derek Forbes provided, he was without a doubt the beating heart of the band. This was SM at their peak.
@@soulkiss1001 Jim sacked Derek over reasons not entirely made clear. Not sure about Mel. They often work with different musicians if the mood takes them. They probably felt they went as far as they could with Mel. I think they regretted the Derek decision pretty quickly. Apparently, they asked him to rejoin on the Street Fighting Years album, but he didn't like the style they were going in. He did rejoin later for Neapolis, but unfortunately, it wasn't a permanent position.

Waterfront is one of my absolute favorites! It is always such a huge performance in live. And Derek spinning around while playing looks so funny :D But the best of them all, in my opinion, was Mick. Gosh I love him, handsome and so talented. I don't know how someone can play in that way but he has proved it possible... What an amazing gig!

SM at their peak - they've never sounded better and Derek always fills their sound out in a way no other bassist ever has.

He just gave them that distinctive sound that left a void when he wasn’t in the band, Sparkle was hardly ever off my turntable in 84-85

I then saw them live in Brussels in 1984. This was the pure simple minds. Unfortunately, not much remains of it now.

Those were the days. I remember gigs like these.
I love Simple Minds to this day, but let's be honest, these were the glory days. I still think the band miss the energy and passion that Derek Forbes provided, he was without a doubt the beating heart of the band. This was SM at their peak.

@@soulkiss1001 Jim sacked Derek over reasons not entirely made clear. Not sure about Mel. They often work with different musicians if the mood takes them. They probably felt they went as far as they could with Mel. I think they regretted the Derek decision pretty quickly. Apparently, they asked him to rejoin on the Street Fighting Years album, but he didn't like the style they were going in. He did rejoin later for Neapolis, but unfortunately, it wasn't a permanent position.
@@MrLozza70 on a google search it just briefly stated jim kerr fired derek becouse derek was addicted to the opposite sex and macniel quit in thelma and louse style,,,the reason i loved once upon a time i think was the excellent synthesizer playing.
@@soulkiss1001 I heard that too, what it means I'm not sure. Maybe he was missing rehearsals and hitting the town a bit too much... OUAT is a good album, although my favourite will always be New Gold Dream.

Waterfront is one of my absolute favorites! It is always such a huge performance in live. And Derek spinning around while playing looks so funny :D But the best of them all, in my opinion, was Mick. Gosh I love him, handsome and so talented. I don't know how someone can play in that way but he has proved it possible... What an amazing gig!
