As others have commented, this video is incorrect on at least two points. 1. The glove box will come out with the kick panel in place. The kick panel need be removed only if you also have to remove the blower motor, but not for only a filter change. 2. This filter was installed backwards. The airflow is in the downward direction as you can tell both from the squirrel cage blower design which blows are from the center to the circumference using centrifugal force and looked at where the ducts on the outside of the blow go to. Also, the clean side of the filter is always on the downstream side, which is the bottom of the filter in this case.
Check out the video at FilterHeads if you want to see how to do this job correctly. And, no, I have no affiliation with FilterHeads,
Good comment! I wanted to know the air flow direction. I had already seen the FilterHeads video. The dirt on the top would indicate it's the input. If you have squirrels getting in how do you keep them out? I installed a screen on my Honda Goldwing air inlet after seeing pictures of how bad they can get. The GL1500 air filter is a lot more work to get at.
This DIY video should be pulled today, as the air flow is down, not up, in ALL of the Equinox models referenced. Others have pointed this fact out, but, for some strange reason, 1A wants to stand by it. Due to the doubt created with this video, I actually did what some below said to do: carefully insert a piece of paper (don't let go of it!) into the filter space and turn on the blower, and see which way the paper is pulled; it was pulled downward. The video is technically embarrassing, too.
Car must be parked near a very industrious squirrel and prolific oak tree!
2012 Equinox is behind the glove box, not under the panel.
Don't have to remove the panel below
To clean the blower motor you do.
This was so informative, I had the same issue, except mine were berries not acorns.
Created a stinky smell in car that nobody could diagnose. Took car for inspection and mechanic found it when he changed cabin filter for me. Now I park car away from woods not facing it.
Arrow is supposed to be pointed down.
Great Info video,,I just replaced mine and had the same problem with it being full of stuff restricting the air flow….Thanks
I have question. Every other video states that the air flow symbol should point DOWN? Your video states that the air flow symbol should point UP? was this a small error in your video?
Thought the pic of filter was click bait! Haven’t changed mine in 7 years..... just ordered mine and going to change today
The 2017 equinox doesn't have screws to remove to take the glove box out! Just lift the bottom on each side then tilt the box down in the hole and pull out! The filter box and door are the same as shown here
I just changed my son’s and found a few acorns and a mouse nest with 4 mummified baby mice. That explains the smell.
omg that's intense
I also did not remove the kick panel. I would like to argue that the arrow is in the direction of the airflow and should be point down. The fan pulls outside air through the filter and into the cabin. This traps the contaminants on top of the filter. Really like to know how mice get in there though.
Hey dumb dumb, put a Kleenex in the filter flap and see which it goes.
@@robh1908 Dumb, dumb?? Arrogant or little testy today? If the airflow was designed to go up, the garbage that was on the top of the filter, would be blowing all over the interior of your car. Try calling Chevrolet, like I did and they will tell you the arrow goes DOWN.
Thank you for the video. It helped me out a lot.
Thanks it took no time
Dealer wants over 120 to perform this. I have a 2018 equinox, is the process similar?
I believe it is-check RUclips, that's what I did
Nice video but I'm pretty sure the air flow is down, not up.
I think you are right. The debris would be on the inlet side. Why would the air flow push the air out? I wonder if it matters.
Quercus, the giant has found our stash!
ON my 2015, taking off that bottom panel is not needed. Just open glove box and lift. Glove box will pop right out. Takes 5 seconds.
Jiffy lube gets mine out in 4 seconds to try to sell me a new one.
Pep boys wanted $45. To do this, so my son did it for the price of the filter.
+im2crafty Thank you for the great reply. We love to empower our customers by showing you how-to perform your own auto repairs while installing our high quality auto parts. Have a great day! 1aauto.com
I understand you only need to take off the glove compartment, but its a good thing they did take off the panel to get the acorns that fell
Filter doesn’t look too bad being 50 years old.
This might sound dumb but my wife's equinox has an odd smell? Hard to explain almost musky. Anyways we haven't ever changed this filter. I didn't know it even had one. So would you think this may be what's making the smell?
Yes it will help. Perhaps get an air filter with an oder fighting agent, like baking soda. Fram makes filters with that.
John Korn definitely! Mine was the same way.
John Korn Could be possible !!!
Get a filter with activated charcoal.
that's the reason I watched this cause my car has a funny smell too
I have a 2016 equinox... air flow is definitely down
It's actually up. Take a cigarette with the filter out. The smoke goes up.
Remember it's recirculating the cabin air.
It’s down.
Love it. Saving me money. thanks.
I see this video was edited from the original video that had the filter installed the wrong way. They skipped that part completely.
Just did this on my 2010 equinox. Thanks!

Didn't mention the most important part. Which direction to put the filter in.
is the air flow up or down, to many different videos with different directions.
+eric brehm In this particular vehicle the air will go upwards.
Isn't the airflow from dirty side to clean, from outside to cabin, so down?
Holy crap that’s the dirtiest cabin filter/area I have ever seen.
This comment tells me I came to the right video. I came here to see if I was the only one with a mess in there. I just did the cabin air filter on my 97 LS400 with 115k miles and it was disgusting. I was literally pulling stuff out even after the air filter came out.
I've had worse in my 2011 Equinox. Mine was filled with rat feces and acorns with leaves. It smelled so bad it costed $105 to change it out because it was that dirty and that bad
What do you do if you don't have access to to an air gun? How do you get all of that stuff out?
Maybe a blow dryer on cool 🤔
Buy a can of air at Wally World
Compressed air in a can
good job. informative and economical fo the diyer
Thanks for checking us out. 1aauto.com +Richard Marling
Be careful, the air flow move down
Thank you for pointing that out, they made that mistake in their older Equinox video they put it in upside-down and side ways. This is why I try to work on my cars for as much as I can. Lots of mechanics don't care or are ignorant.
What makes you think its down?
@@robh1908 The air flow arrow on the filter
@@robh1908 the blower wheel arrangement. Blower pulls air into the center of wheel and spins it out. Also, the filter when she took it out was dirty on top of filter, not the fan side. Filter protects fan. Also if when you take filter out and look in and up, you can see day light where outside air is pulled in from the vents at base of windshield on exterior side. And those acorns didn't get sucked in their, that car has a rodent problem, mouse or chipmunk crawling in there and staying cozy on top of the air filter. Mine was same situation. Chewed up acorns, chipmunk droppings, etc. Still trying to figure out how to stop them coming in.
To verify air flow direction, remove the filter and put a piece of paper above the fan, turn on the car and run the fan.
I wasted an hour trying to get thw bottom panel off and back on. UNEEDED STEP! Just remove the glove compartment!
+Mark Hindermann Thanks for the tip!
I have a question if the filter is Duty the AC don’t work? Because I have a Chevy equinox but everything works except don’t blow cold air and I don’t know what’s going on
+Ismael Moncada You could try cleaning the filter because this will affect performance. Thanks for watching!
on another video the arrow on the filter went down which one is correct?
+Tony Jandura We would only be able to verify that the info in our videos is correct. Thanks for checking us out. 1aauto.com
The arrow is to point in the direction of the air flow. In this case. It should have been down
The correct way is arrow down towards the blower motor. The blower sucks air through the filter.
I have heard people refer to small engines as squirrels under the hood, now I know why.
+Chad Hickey Thanks for checking us out! 1aau.to/m/Shop-1AAuto-c
Is there not a screen ?
The squirrel mafia
That's pretty ridiculous that there's no screen on the intake to keep out objects as big as acorns.
It's a rodent problem. Chipmunks camping out in their. Bringing acorns in with them. Still can't figure out their point of entry. Had same problem. Put a peice of cardboard below filter before pulling out filter to stop acorns from falling into fan wheel.
I was thinking they fell from the backside when she slid the filter out.
It crappy Chevy design that doesn’t keep the vermin out. I actually pulled a dead squirrel from mine!
How the hell did that many acorns get into there
+Keith Walters Thanks for checking us out! 1aau.to/m/Shop-1AAuto-c
Def dont need to take the glove box out completely if you dont have the accorn problem lol
Why didn't the squirrel come out?
Probably could of just dumped the acorns off the floor mat.
No reason to take out the bottom panel
+Philip Ryan We appreciate the feedback. Sometimes there are multiple ways to accomplish the same repair.
WHAT JUNK TO PUT ON A CAR ..
Omg that’s disgusting 🤮
