An explanation of how the RAM corruption gets this bad: - The title card is involved in some way which is unknown. - However, the aftermath of the title card is basically what kickstarts the RAM corruption. As you might have seen when the video first goes into $0D act 1, Sonic and the camera are being rapidly thrown to the left. This is what starts the cascade of RAM corruption. The camera's X-position is thrown into invalid ranges of values, which causes the object manager to fail, which starts the cascade which quickly gets to forcing the game mode of the game to be the Demo mode. When you press Start to escape $0D before it gets truly nasty, the game sees it as you exiting from a demo. The effects on the level select are caused by it corrupting the values of the zones the level select entries go to. If you don't get out of $0D Act 1 quickly, the character proceeds to die, the camera position gets corrupted, the character dies again, and then the Z80 processor fails, taking the sound driver, and therefore all sound and music with it. Then, the game dies.
It may be an old game but its still a good game. Especially in terms of glitches. By the way, if you like sonic 3 and knuckles glitches, consider searching son of a glitch sonic 3
Hell is a place where an unknown person has total control over the very fabric of reality. You can't tell who he or she is, and anything could go horribly wrong anytime. You could start falling upwards at increasing speed, becoming invisible, slowing down or going insanely fast, phasing or being able to look through walls, hearing weird and eerie voices out of nowhere, freezing in place unable to move or to think, becoming unbelievably rich or poor in a blink of an eye, finding themselves with an unpronounceable name all of a sudden, or witness the unavoidable and frighteningly fast crash of the whole universe after watching tiles changing color in the sky.
I'd like to clarify two things: 1. The ram corruption appears to be caused by bad title card mappings. If the title card is simply disabled, the crash does not occur. 2. This zone isn't some unused level or the ending, at least not in Sonic 3. It was likely used in an early draft of the intro cut-scene and indeed remnants of this can be found in the prototype as well as the final game.
hmm... still more functional than fallout 76. it's interesting how some things have such bizarre effects on game like this, I still remember that having 11 links on a swinging platform in aquatic ruins would corrupt sonics graphics.

If you're wondering why Marble Garden Act 2 music plays in Angel Island Zone [1:00] right after you beat the miniboss [2:05], this is actually Angel Island Zone Act 6. I looked further into this, and I found out that when I defeated the miniboss in Angel Island Act 4 (It was super laggy), it played Hydrocity Act 2 Music. In conclusion, OOB Acts can play music beyond the current zone. Also most of the time, Zones stop working at Act 33 [$20] and beyond. Do try Act $82 on Sonic 2 Zones (Final Release), as these can be really interesting [Act $80 crashes due to glitched text].
1:07 I found one through a level select glitch selector similar to that one but also different. The water behaves and looks different and there are 2 Act 2 bosses, and then there are a few other differences, like the object load manager fixing itself before the game crashes in that pipe (you can beat the whole zone). I guess I'll probably make a video on it? Pretty sure the miniboss for Act 1 spawns because it's not yet defeated(?) and you've passed through it's y - coordinates. What confuses me is that if you pass that part with debug mode and go to it's y - coordinates at another part in the level, it pulls you to the Act 1 boss arena. But it doesn't do it in the other spot, instead it loads the arena. The zone also forces you to play as Sonic & Tails. You cannot play as Tails alone or Sonic alone by switching the number on the level select. It might be posssible through a code, though.
you could try doing it in the sonic 3 prototype, maybe you could get something a bit more finished. or even more broken idk but it would be a cool thing to try out
I got very few sound corruptions in angel island 1 or 2. Angel island didn't load the unknown zone. After dying once in hydrocity I have a strip of hexadecimal with a white background across the level background. My sound was a bit corrupted again until in the middle of the level the sound went "zip beep boop beep boop" then played the drowning theme. Now there's no sound
Just tried to play again and got hit by an enemy. The sound went craxy and when the drowning theme tried to play it is stuck on one note. I have a high pitched one note continuously in the background
Just went farther and when the drowning theme tried to play it stopped on a low note which kept playing and progressively got lower, now that's the only sound at all that's playinh
Yes, because a black scene with weird floating objects on the screen playing the City Eacape theme (That's what it sounds like to me anyways, but that's probably not really it) is such a scary.
0:38 ah yes, the sonic 3 zones: ANGE, HYDROCITY, MARBLE GARDEN, FLYING BATTERY, CAP, LAUNCH BASE, (s&k: MUSHROOM VALLEY, SANDOPOLIS), 2P VS 2x, T, BONUS and SPECIAL STAGE.
Fun fact! If you load this zone ID in the November 3rd 1993 prototype, you can actually kind of run around it! It basically functions like the S3@K zones but without the invalid placement of Sonic like in S3! Also for anyone wondering why the normal looking version of Marble Garden was suffering such extreme slowdowns, this is because of it being an act beyond act 2. To fix this, all you have to do is load another level while in this invalid act. It will for some reason, completely stop the slowdown until you deactivate the code. Although reactivating it will once again fix it. This works for all invalid acts, although some acts beyond act 2 will soft lock the game.
Probably some of the most insane glitches I've ever seen. And all because of one level's corruption! And it also revealed new stuff - Cap Zone and act 22 of Hydrocity! :D 3:25 - It's like the game itself wants you to relax via Endless Mine's music. 7:28 and 9:37 - Thought the original Sandopolis act 2 was creepy?
As I heard apparently, sonic 3 was builded on sonic 2 engine, like sonic 2 was on sonic 1... (I'm not sure tho) In early builds we could access few sonic 1 levels in sonic
It also does that in the finished Sonic 3. It was just the product of rushed development. They had no time for original level icons, so they reused the ones from 2.
Weird thing to say now, but I once got Angel Island act 2's water to dissapear completely during normal gameplay. I started a new game and after completing special stage 3 (assuming you dont lose any) as Sonic & Tails, I spindashed and clipped through a wall. The game physics system pushed me out tho, but the water unloaded completely. I have no proof of doing it nor I know exactly what I did, maybe I've loaded Knuckles' path and that's why the water dissapeared?
Semi-unrelated (only because this does with a glitched Angel Island); I, in one of my couple Blue Knuckles runs in Sonic 3 & Knuckles, ended up finishing one of the successful setups with Angel Island as per usual, but the level graphics were wrong, and it was called "Zone Zone"; This specifically happened on the Gamecube release of Sonic Mega Collection, on actual hardware, somewhere around 8 - 10 years ago, and I have not seen the flooded Angel Island load that way since…
When I tried this on a SEGA Genesis ROM loader console thingy that can also play other console games, it crashed at the first frame during the start of Sonic jumping into the ring when the game loads normally. So basically it crashed after the SEGA logo went away. I used the codes for both acts and the crash fixer, so am I doing something wrong or is this just a fail save by the console itself to prevent the ROM from getting messed up? Any help or answers would be appreciated.

Or in lava reefs emerald chamber,(which is probably what it should be called, since sammy sega themselves confirmed its not sonic 2s hidden palace) since that was in mushroom valley for the cutscene as well.
