Little by little the Ford is coming back to life. It may be aggravating when you find things wrong now but, it's best if it shows up now than when you think you're done and it breaks down on the job.

The gear reduction allows the smaller motor to turn faster, with less torque......which also allows the final drive to actually spin the engine FASTER, with less effort. So, it's not actually "geared down", compared to the stock starter, it's just using the internal gear reduction as a torque multiplier. ;-)

Get a set of line wrenches for fuel and brake lines. Regular wrenches have a tendency to round over brass fittings, and tightening brass fittings is harder with normal wrenches. Line wrenches cheaper and less anoying than making new metal lines.

Love watching you rebuild this 1978 ford. Takes me back to the days in the early 70s when my father and I had snow contracts with and oLder ford loader. We looked at buying a Ford of this vintage but it wasn’t in the budget. Dad has passed on but he would have loved watching your videos restoring something he never owned but wished he had.

Captain, 39 is the week the starter was made.
It wouldn't/should'nt be very exspensive to have it remanned.
    I've rebuilt them myself.
The first one was on my dad's car and one wasn't available.
I had a date and needed it running.
I'd learned how to in my high school's auto shop class schools used to have.
Anyways, it awesome you're going to eventually have yourself a backho you really need on your property.
No doubt that it's going to be extremely usefull to finish the RUclips yacht.

When cutting the end of the zip ties you end up leaving a sharp point that is sure to nick you next time you shove your hand/arm into a hole to work on something else. Try using a pair of pliers to twist the tail until it breaks off, you won't have that sharp point anymore.

I take a bugger size dab of grease and smear it around at the lip of heater hoses before I put it on, it helps slip on the hose and the next time you take it off.
Note: grease gets hard after one or two hundred years and glues the hose on 🤷‍.

Thanks for sharing this adventure with the backhoe, it made it worth another 5K washing it after getting it running . I work on this kind of age machines for customers and buy and sell a few as well, it's got harder to find stuff to buy . with parts pricing and some availability issues profits getting harder to find, as well. Guys don't seem to link price increases with paying me more for the finished machines. That starter would of fitted perfect on a 4 cylinder those 3's are a short compact bundle of fun L.O.L. I'd also say replace the 12v positive battery feed you could find there is high resistance in that cable that can also cause slow cranking after fitting a new starter. You can't always see the problem looking at the cable you'd have to resistance/voltage drop test it to find out for sure. The general rule I have is old machine/ old messed up cables/ terminals change them all and know it's getting 100% CCA in our minus 30oc or lower cold winters in Canada. Take care.

Your door handle reminds me of years ago at my cousin's farm. He let me use an old pickup to drive around the farm. The only problem....if you needed to put it in reverse, take the cover off the transmission and align the gears with a long screwdriver. I never had to do that as I was careful to always stop where reverse was not needed. Farmers are the most resourceful people I've ever known.

If anybody will get the maximum use out of thise particular piece of equipment, it'll be you. Good work getting her up to snuff there Captain. You should get in touch with Hank from Hamiltonville Farm on youtube here as he's always uncovering abandoned excavators and equipment you could use and sells them at very low prices. Recently found a Kobelco 160 with a nice undercarriage that needed a little work [looks like not much work would get it started]. At any rate, those pieces of equipment are the ones you have a lot of experience with and could make the most out of. Give those lads a shout for sure.

  • @tonydurnell7951
    @tonydurnell7951 Год назад +4

Thank you for taking us on your journey with the 555. You will be surprised with how much push power you have with that backhoe. It may have a small power unit but it sure has a big heart for its size. The back actor has enough weight in it to give extra grip to the drive wheels when pushing. Take the bucket off and see how light the front end becomes and then try it down the road without the bucket on the front sketchy or what. So what I say is keep in mind that balance and counterweight is the magic word when altering the front end of these little big wheels, or you could end up a worried passenger with no or little control. We had to put front weights on our machines when we ran them without the front loader (working in tight spaces such as woodland area. Stay safe and well regards to family.

Just started watching the continuing adventures of the triple nickel rebuild, and a thought occurred to me; when you get the beast up and running properly, and you start to work it around the homestead, your going to have to build another bridge across the gully large enough to support the backhoe (bunch of videos there).some work in the woods blazing, and grading new trails, and undoubtedly finding a few wet spots to get stuck in,those 2wd backhoes can get stuck in a pile of wet leaves, might need some tire chains for better traction!!😁😁😁

Regarding people knocking your work on getting this machine back to usable condition because they say it is "junk" look up: Pacific Northwest Hillbilly. He is like you, in need of a machine and what he could afford was a "junk" of a D4 dozer. His project is almost finished. It is running. I'm confident you will find a kinship with him. Plus, it is not just his D4, the next project is an excavator which he needed but again could only afford a piece of "junk". However, this one at least started and moved so a head start vs the D4.
Besides, the fun is in the challenge of bringing a piece of "junk" back to being a solid, usable piece of equipment. Lord knows I've done my share, though nothing as big as the machines you and Matt are working on. It is so rewarding. I find the solitude will doing the work to be my means of refilling my tank so to speak.

If you had ever had the experience of trying to use poultry shears to cut up a chicken for cooking you had a lot of fun doing so
I myself learned the hard way pruning shears work a whole lot better in the kitchen than they do out in the garden ever since I learned how good pruning shears are I always keep a pair in my kitchen for cutting up poultry the best scissors anybody can get for cutting up poultry if you can snap half inch thick bodark then you can darn sure cut up a chicken bodak is tougher than oak regardless of how you trim electrical wiring you're doing a real good job and I love it keep up the good work I'm proud of you

Indiana uses snow plows to clear branches. Where my brother lives east of LA near Lake Elsinore they use snow plows to clear rock slides and occasionally for actual snow.

Just a word of caution, Cap'n. Always check the number of teeth on the drive gear when you change starters. If they are off only one tooth, it can be costly.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts, ideas and videos. That’s really unfortunate about that starter not fitting. Looking forward to seeing the next few videos, not sure if I’m more anxious to see more yacht or backhoe videos. Was googling last night and was very tempted to suggest to a laser welder company that they support you. The best rig they had started at 32k, way out of budget for most people but in no means exorbitant for them. I think you would be a great fit since they promote being easier for beginners, able to clean rust, lower cost consumables. Just what the hobby user needs and with bleed over onto the other channels you associate with they would get a great amount of exposure. The biggest downside I saw was their suggested requirement that all welding take place in a controlled indoor environment to limit possible laser exposure to others. As important as I see that I’m confident you could come up with a suitable workaround. Wishing you and your family the best.

In my experiance with gear reduction starters, they spin the engine just as fast as regular starter, They use a electric motor that is smaller but spins way faster than original starter. That said, my experiance is with a high compression gas engine, not a diesel loader engine.
