Hey Mike, just something really satisfying doing that cleaning up with fire. When I was in the rural fire brigade we used to cool burn a good fire break around bush settlements, in Victoria, Australia. I am sure it saved homes until a really ferocious fire season hit and seared the earth. I am thankful that I had moved by then. People let the debris build up and cool burns were reduced in size so that contributed to a massive fuel load hence the disastrous fires. It’s always something to keep ahead of. On my property boundaries I had a ploughed fire break about 100’ wide, which I would ploughing in each spring. Thanks for sharing this, loved the memories it brought back.

I love the sound of the birds in the evening and first thing in the morning so Thanks Mike, a good fire and finish off with sound of nature, just doesn't get much better.
I drilled a couple more holes in the stationary thumb on my mini excavator, so I could close the thumb. That really made a difference in the tasks I could complete, being able to pick up objects closer to the machine. Before I made the modifications it was difficult to pick up anything unless the stick was fully extended and the boom was down and then I had no lifting power....

I’m glad you explained the burning issue, there’s a huge responsibility when you light something on fire, especially when you’re in the middle of a potential tinder box. I’ve seen Amish in our area burn corn stubble in fields and end up taking out a building on the neighbors property

I have been to plenty of wildfires during my 22 years and counting as a firefighter, always impressive how fast fire will move uphill.... there is a whole science on it 🤓🤓🤓 I have only just scraped the surface of it all.... 🤯

Watching you do this with the Backhoe reminds me of working with our old backhoe , which was a 580 case 2 Wheel Dr. gets stuck on wet grass on level ground. Sure is amazing what you can do with a "garden tractor" and some welded up steel. Of course having the knowledge to put them to best use helps. Well done Capt. looking good. Keeping that brush back will keep the copperheads away as well so good work on that. They really do not like the manicured areas so let them have the wild and you keep the lawn area and your guests will be happy. Nothing that is more useful than an old furnace squirrel cage fan. A thousand and one uses and yes fire really loves oxygen. Burns way hotter and faster.

Mike, you and I know, in Indiana this time of the year, the ground is moist, the leaves are green and, as long as the wind is not blowing, the danger of a fire getting away from you is very minimal. It isn't the fall with all the dry leaves and weeds. It isn't a dry climate where the pine needles and dead tree criss-cross the forest. You prepared a perimeter around the burn area. You didn't throw your cigarette out the window of the truck. You weren't downing a jug of pure grain alcohol. You knew what you were doing. Well except taking your 555 down a steep hill with slick tires on the back.

Cap’n, I gave away two of those squirrel cage fans that I had taken from an old central air heat pump unit. The guy used them to ventilate his hog birthing shed.
About a year later he stopped by and brought honey from his hives and elderberry jelly that his wife had made. It was one of the best trades that I ever made… especially since I just gave them to him to get rid of them!

We might be a couple weeks behind but the trees are definitely starting to bud out.

Good deal, Kleeman. Other than the stump that refused to burn up. 🙂 As always, thanks for sharing. People are a bit paranoid about fires. Or at the very least 'overly concerned'. I've always lived in the city but as far as I could tell with all that green behind the fire and clear dirt in front (uphill) I wouldn't have been concerned.
What he has explained multiple times but often people still do not hear…. forest fires are due to the fuel (tinder, dead fall, leaf piles) on the ground. Yes, live trees will burn up but it takes a lot of heat and fuel greater than a little grass to ignite them. Anyone that has made a fire with green wood and wet tinder can attest to the challenge of igniting one…. takes a lot of intentional effort.
Once a hot forest fire happens, what really spreads the fire fast is when green tree trunks are exploding due to the intense heat instantly converting the moisture inside them into pressurized steam that must escape.
@@genesispuredeaf2390 Oh gawd yes. Just look at the mountains in CA. Overgrown with like 50-100 TIMES more trees than there should be. Lack of water. Dead wood down to rot. Etc etc.
The other thing they forget is the humidity in the air, ground, and on the surrounding plants. Indiana is a humid state compared to out west where it is dry as can be. Fire behaves totally different in 80% humidity than 10% humidity.
@@markpashia7067 correct….Mike spoke to that in his explanation. He is aware of the steps that are needed. Also, the camera often doesn’t show distances and elevations that are realized in real life (irl). Even though I know his skills, I pucker up when he makes his fires in the woods until I can see for myself that everything was checked. Most importantly…he is doing this on his own property which is significant in many realms.
That gets heard by those who are good listeners while the bad listeners self identify with obvious sounds of ignorance. Whether they ignore things or have a problem comprehending is the true question. I smile and virtually pat them on the head (gently) …don’t want to add insult to injury.

We live in the Black Hills Forest Protection area. Rules for burning are strict. No burning from April 1 until November. When you do burn, a minimum of 2" of snow is required for a small fire and 6" for a large fire. A permit is required and notification to 911 dispatch must be made. We had one pile to burn this year. We weren't around on a couple of potential burn times. We finally burned it on March 31.
I don’t know if you are aware but Mike is a lieutenant on the local fire department.well versed on fire prevention.that is his day job.

Rules are made for the local conditions usually. Where he is in Indiana is pretty safe most of the year. Unless it is drought year, July and August are the only months that it gets real risky. A good rain a couple times a week is cumulative and the ground stays damp and with the high humidity the foliage stays resistant to ignition. I am in Missouri which is similar so starting the fire is often harder than stopping it. You can control a burn by pulling the fuel back most of the time and if it is not piled dense on the hottest of coals it will just smolder down and go out. Point is location really matters on how the rules are made.
@@markpashia7067 I live in a Semi Arid area. we only get a few inches of moisture at this time of year. Our humidity is very low. Fire risk is high most of the time.I live in a forested area. While not completely following "Firewise" guidelines, I've kept trees away from the house and keep the prairie grass down. Trees are limbed up 10-12 feet to reduce ladder fuels. The house is sided with fiber cement. There is a 4' perimeter of rock mulch around the house and plantings are limited. There are no evergreens near the foundation. We are also fortunate that we are just a couple of miles from the local fire department and also a couple of miles from the TATANKA HOT SHOTs. a forest fire fighting organization.

For your squirrel cage blower find an old two wheel dolly to mount it on before doing your sheet metal improvements. It will make moving it so much easier plus you can make a cord wrap on it.
He’ll have to make sure it has all-terrain tires with all the holes in the tubes patched!!!

You do a great job of letting people know that although you do know a lot, you are not giving advise and that they need to exercise caution. The information that you do share (steps you take on YOUR property) should help them ask questions and seek proper guidance on THEIR situation. Your concepts are sound.
I use a small furnace fan like that for a breeze when I’m outside working in the sun sometimes. A bare minimum of narrowing will really ramp up the force. And if you had one of those 2stroke mini generators it would barely use fuel to run for the day. Love the videos! Keep up the great work

Back when I was kid a long time ago, we were able to have fires and never started anything on fire except what we needed to get rid of. Now I'm lucky to have a small fire pit and have to hope the smoke doesn't disturb a neighbor. Other wise I only have my double barrel stove with spark arrestor to burn small limbs. Recently we have had storms and the trees killed by the summer drought and heat extreme have piled up a lot of stuff that needs to go. It is going to take a long time to do it all.

27:50 I have a blower like that. I fixed mine with some guards to prevent getting fingers in it and painted it yellow. It works great as a high volume air mover. They are nice because you can get the air moving 20’ out in front of it because it has some power to make air pressure.

I use my Stihl blower with a 10' section of cheap galvanized gutter downspout material and a propane weed burner. Works well for getting the fire going! If I am in a hurry, leave the blower running. If I want quiet, shut the blower down.

When you are on a downhill slope fill the bucket with dirt to keep the nose down and stabilise the backhoe.

The fan you are using is designed for inside of a furnace that being said block off the top half of the opening and it cause it to build up pressure and the fan will blow way harder and work more efficiently to get the fire going I use one similar in my garage that I mounted to a old pressure washer frame with wheels on it so I can set it anywhere I need it for air while I’m working

Good job Mike. I burnt a 70’ white pine we cut down in my yards. I used a 15hp push blower and the tree was gone in like 3 hours lol

As you have found Capt. a gallon of gas used for a fan sure beats a gallon chucked on the fire.
For a future project you could surround the yacht with a water feature. Wouldn't a koi pond be pretty snazzy?
This burning is SOO different from the way Chris does it....... But the woods here haven't caught fire yet and you're burning in the middle of them.

I always stock up on cheap bags of charcoal at the end of the year, usually $6-8 for the big bags and with my charcoal starter can it will start a fire in a pile of wood quick. Even better when you can snag a stack of old pallets to cut the good wood off and toss the pieces with the nails in the garbage bin, used to have a guy with a saw mill that would give me all the slabs i could get which was perfect for bon fire starter with charcoal
