Met him holding his new daughter at a grocery store in Santa Monica, CA. Always thought of him in magical Canadian woods, so it was rather surreal. Started playing drums at eight around the time Moving Pictures was released and loved his writing too. He was/is an amazing Soul/Intellect w much Heart. Feel your pain.

Respect to Les and Primus for even attempting this. Not only is this an extremely difficult song to play, all that is involved in playing it is another story.... then to throw your vocals out there in some kind of attempt to sing somewhere close to Geddy Lee is fantastic! They did a fantastic job. Thank you for posting. I'm a long time Rush fan, I play the bass... and needless to say... really miss Rush.

I've seen a lot of "talented" bands cover other musicians work (mostly bad, some decent, others played songs you just don't touch ).. but how Les and Primus treated this album/tour is second to none.
If you like this you should check out Primus' "Live Frog" set where they do the entire Pink Floyd Animals album, live on stage. It's ballsy and brilliant, just like this!
Aside from the fact that this is an excellent rendition of a classic Rush tune, has anyone noticed that they are using almost the same exact equipment as Rush in order to re-create this awesome song? It's not like a glockenspiel and bell chimes are part of every drummer's arsenal of percussive instruments. Not-to-mention a Rickenbacker double-neck Guitar/Bass combo.

I saw Primus’ farewell to kings tour… it was incredible. That album heard through Primus’ unique sound was really powerful. They nailed the ENTIRE album.
A Farewell to kings just doesn't get enough recognition. It s such a tasteful solid prog rock mind boggling album. Due in lsrgebpart to Neil who creating profound lyrical gems. My favorite and most entertaiining RUSH record. I'm not alone. You had to be there from the beginning to adsorb the depth oF .RUSH. I got varied results sharing it with different people. It was too much and too smart.
Could not agree more! Thinking what a gift it was to live my entire 55 years having the music of Rush to keep me company. Hearing these songs live were magical moments. I’m so happy that the magic continues with talents like Les and Primus and all the others who make Rush part of their shows. This wasn’t a cover. It was more an offering to the gods of the North.
Les Claypool never ceases to show his love and respect for those three men in Rush. Les has always been a huge Rush fan and especially a Geddy Lee fan on bass. Les is one of the best bass players in rock music today, but even he would tell you he owes it all to Geddy Lee. Geddy was one of his huge influences on bass.
I'll never forget the night they opened for Rush in '92 at the Seattle Coliseum. I was sort of familiar with Primus as most of my friends were diehards, but that night I 'got' them in their totality. Clearly, Primus was not just another opener of tours, as I suppose Rush once was to Kiss. Primus was a group cut from the same cloth. One highlight which stands out was when they for no particular reason decided to cover 'Master Of Puppets'.

Now I’m older than you and had been following Rush as my favorite band since 1976, so I wasn’t familiar with Primus at all, I was there to see Rush mainly. There were a group of teens that were sitting behind us all wearing Primus T- shirts,so they must have been huge Primus fans, which is cool, except the idiots got up and left the arena right after Primus was done!!? They certainly missed a great show. I can’t imagine that even if I wasn’t familiar with the opening act, I’d stay just to get my ticket price worth. I mean Primus is good and all that, but we’re talking about the holy trinity of prog/rock here. Damn what a bunch of knuckleheads. I have wondered since then if any of those kids became more familiar with Rush and regret now walking out on the best part of the show?

You have to remember that those kids were probably as rabid about Primus as we were about Rush, which they probably hadn't had much exposure to (and who knows, they may have had a curfew or something). Also, there are some bands that I would laugh about from MTV or whatever, only to be totally blown away by their live act. So in that sense, those kids were missing something by leaving early all right, but they might not have been ready for it just yet. It's nice to see that a band which was that good and that weird was also persistent enough to become widely accepted. It's actually kind of hip to be into Rush now, and you don't even have to play an instrument.
Wolverine: Bro, did you know that shortly before this Rush tribute tour started Les visited Geddy & they jammed/practiced the set, so Les got some live playing pointers from his one time master/teacher. You could tell Les was thrilled to be playing with his greatest influence :)
They toured together, I remember a Geddy interview about how much fun they had visiting Les's ranch called El Rancho and out on his boat called El Boato
No doubt fantastic performances. Me too. Seen Primus perform this last month in Ca. And Rush when I was 19 in NYC at the Palladium. 1980. What a ride. I'm 60 now.
WOW. For those of you that don't remember how these 3 got together? Les and Larry were interviewing drummers after letting Curveball go, (who's floor I was crashing on at the time, thanks, Curveball, you got me through a tough time financially! 🙂) Tim Alexander came along and they began jamming Rush songs, which coincidently, they all knew note for note. I've been trying to learn how to play Rush songs on drums since I first started trying to play drums, learning every note on Moving Pictures.... or TRYING anyway...(that's how OLD I am, Moving Pictures had just come out. A masterpiece in production at the time and STILL, and an inspiration for me to become an audio engineer, and yes, I engineered Primus' first 2 tours and was their live guy for 3.5 years.) For anybody who has also tried, you know, it's HARD!!!!! So for these three to get through the entire 2112 album, UNREHEARSED, NOTE FOR NOTE together, was an amazing feat, and Les looked at Larry and said something to the effect of "This is the guy" though I wasn't there for that moment. The rest as ya'll know, was history. So for me, just now seeing this warms my heart. Full circle. If ANYone could fill the shoes of Neil Peart so Rush could go back out and do a tour, Tim Alexander is unquestionably the ONE guy who could. (hint hint if anybody in either camp is listening... I'm sure it's been suggested). Then Tim could play in both bands on the tour! Make all of us really happy, like Ecstatic! Kudos of course to Les and Larry also, I've been trying to learn how to play that song on guitar for about 30 years unsuccessfully, and bass too. Maybe because I'm a drummer, and not even a good one at that!! Lol. @ Headband Harvest: I believe it's Rancho Relaxo. I had the privilege of fishing that pond with Les once, Thanks Les! Also had the privilege of fishing Yellowstone with them boys also! Caught a huge rainbow in the Gallatin River just north of West Yellowstone after a night with the Green Ranger. Larry will know what I'm talking about. That night, we almost started the Yellowstone Fire #2 when our campfire got out of hand suddenly, spreading quickly into the grass. The water bucket in camp had holes in it and made it extremely difficult to extinguish! Leroy, (drum tech) and I carried the bucket back and forth from the river, about 20 yards away, as fast as we could before the water ran out the bottom and threw it on the flames until we were exhausted, actually floating the burning logs in the fire, and they still wouldn't go out! We finally picked them up and threw them in the river, and they tumbled down the Gallatin STILL BURNING as we watched in horror! WOW. Them were the days.... Now I do sound for reggae festivals... 🙂 Wish I would have known about this tour!
As a 40+ years (~57 y.o.) Canadian Rush fan, it warms my heart to see other talented big-name groups covering Rush. Sure, there are many Rush cover bands, but to see the likes of the Foo Fighters and Primus doing it... you know Rush has left an immeasurable impression on the music world!! 🤘😁
Greatest Rush song ever!! I've fought with my brother in law over this song which I believe pound for pound is better than Stairway!!!! Kudos to Les and the boys for this fantastic version!! And yes super difficult song to pull off!!

I remember primus touring with rush when I was in 6th/7th grade around 1991 and at that time it made no sense to me at all why a cool band like primus would be playing with some nerds like rush 😂😂😂 Once I started playing guitar it worked itself out

I saw RUSH for the first time in the mid seventies and several times after that . I took my son to see.them twice ( their last two tours...I'm so glad I did . I miss them so much , at least I have most of their albums . RIP Neil ...
I still tear up after 2 years. My father passed in Jan 2020 and he's the one who played this song for me on our stereo. My dad loved music and my family usually had good sound systems. I remember the days of listening to rush,boston,pink floyed,janis joplin,the beatles, led zepplin, among many other greats brings back so many memories of my dad setting me down and bus looking at album covers and him telling me the names of the songs. His favorites were villa strangliato and 2112.
I knew Les cited Rush as one of his biggest influences, but he takes it to a totally different level here. To pay homage to one of THE most technically sound bands ever shows how much he wants the world to hear and enjoy their music. Kudos to Primus for pulling this off!

Saw'em in Berkeley on their home turf. Absolutely crushed it. Chills up my spine when Larry started in with that repeating Lydian riff. Also, twin double-neck attack (Rick & Gibson, no less) FTW! This album was life itself to me at age 10.
The best “Rush” concert I’ve been to. They nailed the whole album from front to back. So great to see them is a small club (The Coca-Cola Roxy in ATL).
I have never heard anyone but Rush play Xanadu. I didn’t think it was possible for anyone to cover this song. Les and the boys knocked it out of the ball park though. Nailed it. Nicely done! 🤙
i don't know how very old this makes me however i saw Primus once as the opening act for a metal band. that was the only time i got to see them. they blew up as i thought they were going to.

I saw Primus open for Rush in Indianapolis in the 1980’s. Never heard of them prior to that night. A story that circulated prior to the show starting, that Neil was late arriving to Market Square Arena so Herb, (Tim Alexander),got on Neil’s kit for sound check.
Who can cover this? I've heard other bands attempt it, and even somewhat emulate it. However, these guys actually played the song....in time, with proper tone, and even got the visuals right. Amazing. Primus is awesome.
As both a Rush and Primus fan, I gotta say, they *nailed* this, right down the little details like the bell tree. If I didn't know this was Primus, I would swear I'm listening to the Exit Stage Left version.
This a good performance, it also illustrates just how amazing Rush was musically. If you listen to the Exit Stage Left version and compare it to this, you immediately hear how incredible the performance was by Rush.
Absolutely - and along with Jacob’s Ladder and La Villa, those three performances on Exit Stage Left are some of the most legendary live version “epics” of all time. I’d add Freewill from Exit to that as well…
It's not just about all the right notes in all the right order and combinations... It's about timing..., phrasing..., & dynamics... Those are the reasons that great symphony orchestras are led by great conductors instead of blinking metronomes... While I highly respect that they could get all the right notes in the right order and combinations..., which is no small feat in and of itself... And I also highly appreciate the period correct instruments... I mean, a 1275 & a 4080 side by side on a stage is just liquid cool... However..., the phrasing..., the ebb & flow of the time..., and the contrasts between delicate & explosive..., well it's like they just phoned it in..., kinda' just plodding through it... Just compare the volume swell guitar intro..., this performance..., and the Exit Stage Left cut..., (album OR the video recorded on a different night...), the way Alex speeds up and slows down..., almost the way a bird would speed up while swooping down to the ground, and slow down when coasting a bit after flying upwards..., or the way a rollercoaster speeds up at the bottom of a loop..., but slows down at the top of a loop... And the way Alex slides into the next note..., the intensity and speed of his vibrato..., and how he varies them as he goes... It's extremely expressive..., and really makes you feel it... This video...? Nope...
Yes John. All of that taste and style is what makes Rush actual artists not just musicians. There are loads of technicians out there who can play the parts exactly. That isn’t hard at all for a pro level player. It’s the artistry that makes it magic. And the originator will always capture that better than anyone copying the parts. In Rush’s case, the artistry is at a very high level, especially with Alex, which is on clear display in Xanadu. He’s one of the most artistic players of any genre anywhere, and doesn’t really get enough credit for that.

First time few times I seen Primus they were on tour with Rush, so this is a very suiting tribute to a band that helped them in the game of rock and roll.

Very good guys. Rush (A farewell to kings) with Max Webster (High class in borrowed shoes) was one of my favourite Toronto concerts CNE August 23, 1977. This song also got me through grade 12 poetry, it was the poem Ode to Kubla Khan along with numerous other Rush classics. Cheers
A gloriously outstanding attempt at the Rush masterpiece, which NO other group would attempt!! Primus sucks and does what NO other group could because they are outstanding musicians. I applaud the group for not even attempting, but for doing the piece justice.
Yeah, just imagine what sort of legacy Primus could have if they wrote and performed music up the level of their raw talent. Their songs are demented bullshit in my opinion, but they certainly can play.

Hah!, can’t stop thinking of the girl that was stoked to get asked to go see Primus by a guy she’s been interested in (Rush is ‘hot girl repellent’, in case you are new to their work, and Xanadu of all gems, hah!!!!) Probably some of the coolest, smartest, and best people you have ever met, Rush fans, for whatever reason, are generally going to be the people who would rather watch star trek or twilight zone re-runs instead of the Oscars, Kardashians, or anything mainstream or “cool”. I was fortunate enough to see Primus open for Rush back in high school and the recent passing and life story of Neil was so truly sad, this video is heart warming as I’m sure these guys miss Rush as much as any of us. This was NOT a 5 minute rehearsal to get this nailed down,well played lads.amazed and impressed.i worked tirelessly for weeks on end to nail a rush track with an old band of mine.their music aint a piece of pie...the timing can get you in a flash.much appreciated.

I saw three shows on the Roll The Bones tour. On the two shows that Primus opened, Les' bass sound alone was as loud as Rush's whole band. And it worked!

Geddy actually personally coached him through this and a few other rush songs. No one is crazy enough to try it any other way haha

Yes. To a certain extent.. Audio Technology today is way better than When the boys played this live in 77.

I've been trying to learn how to play Rush songs on drums since I first started trying to play drums, learning every note on Moving Pictures.... or TRYING anyway...(that's how OLD I am, Moving Pictures had just come out. A masterpiece in production at the time and STILL, and an inspiration for me to become an audio engineer, and yes, I engineered Primus' first 2 tours and was their live guy for 3.5 years.) For anybody who has also tried, you know, it's HARD!!!!! So for these three to get through the entire 2112 album, UNREHEARSED, NOTE FOR NOTE together, was an amazing feat, and Les looked at Larry and said something to the effect of "This is the guy" though I wasn't there for that moment. The rest as ya'll know, was history. So for me, just now seeing this warms my heart. Full circle. If ANYone could fill the shoes of Neil Peart so Rush could go back out and do a tour, Tim Alexander is unquestionably the ONE guy who could. (hint hint if anybody in either camp is listening... I'm sure it's been suggested). Then Tim could play in both bands on the tour! Make all of us really happy, like Ecstatic! Kudos of course to Les and Larry also, I've been trying to learn how to play that song on guitar for about 30 years unsuccessfully, and bass too. Maybe because I'm a drummer, and not even a good one at that!! Lol. @ Headband Harvest: I believe it's Rancho Relaxo. I had the privilege of fishing that pond with Les once, Thanks Les! Also had the privilege of fishing Yellowstone with them boys also! Caught a huge rainbow in the Gallatin River just north of West Yellowstone after a night with the Green Ranger. Larry will know what I'm talking about. That night, we almost started the Yellowstone Fire #2 when our campfire got out of hand suddenly, spreading quickly into the grass. The water bucket in camp had holes in it and made it extremely difficult to extinguish! Leroy, (drum tech) and I carried the bucket back and forth from the river, about 20 yards away, as fast as we could before the water ran out the bottom and threw it on the flames until we were exhausted, actually floating the burning logs in the fire, and they still wouldn't go out! We finally picked them up and threw them in the river, and they tumbled down the Gallatin STILL BURNING as we watched in horror! WOW. Them were the days.... Now I do sound for reggae festivals... 🙂 Wish I would have known about this tour!

Man I can remember hearing certain songs by Rush and it's a feeling of putting your finger into a golden soul
As a 40+ years (~57 y.o.) Canadian Rush fan, it warms my heart to see other talented big-name groups covering Rush. Sure, there are many Rush cover bands, but to see the likes of the Foo Fighters and Primus doing it... you know Rush has left an immeasurable impression on the music world!! 🤘😁

I remember primus touring with rush when I was in 6th/7th grade around 1991 and at that time it made no sense to me at all why a cool band like primus would be playing with some nerds like rush 😂😂😂 Once I started playing guitar it worked itself out

I saw RUSH for the first time in the mid seventies and several times after that . I took my son to see.them twice ( their last two tours...I'm so glad I did . I miss them so much , at least I have most of their albums . RIP Neil ...
I still tear up after 2 years. My father passed in Jan 2020 and he's the one who played this song for me on our stereo. My dad loved music and my family usually had good sound systems. I remember the days of listening to rush,boston,pink floyed,janis joplin,the beatles, led zepplin, among many other greats brings back so many memories of my dad setting me down and bus looking at album covers and him telling me the names of the songs. His favorites were villa strangliato and 2112.

Saw'em in Berkeley on their home turf. Absolutely crushed it. Chills up my spine when Larry started in with that repeating Lydian riff. Also, twin double-neck attack (Rick & Gibson, no less) FTW! This album was life itself to me at age 10.
The Gibson is Alex’s he loaned it to them!
Listening to this made me appreciate Rush even more.

I saw Primus open for Rush in Indianapolis in the 1980’s. Never heard of them prior to that night. A story that circulated prior to the show starting, that Neil was late arriving to Market Square Arena so Herb, (Tim Alexander),got on Neil’s kit for sound check.

Absolutely - and along with Jacob’s Ladder and La Villa, those three performances on Exit Stage Left are some of the most legendary live version “epics” of all time. I’d add Freewill from Exit to that as well…
It's not just about all the right notes in all the right order and combinations... It's about timing..., phrasing..., & dynamics... Those are the reasons that great symphony orchestras are led by great conductors instead of blinking metronomes...
While I highly respect that they could get all the right notes in the right order and combinations..., which is no small feat in and of itself... And I also highly appreciate the period correct instruments... I mean, a 1275 & a 4080 side by side on a stage is just liquid cool... However..., the phrasing..., the ebb & flow of the time..., and the contrasts between delicate & explosive..., well it's like they just phoned it in..., kinda' just plodding through it... Just compare the volume swell guitar intro..., this performance..., and the Exit Stage Left cut..., (album OR the video recorded on a different night...), the way Alex speeds up and slows down..., almost the way a bird would speed up while swooping down to the ground, and slow down when coasting a bit after flying upwards..., or the way a rollercoaster speeds up at the bottom of a loop..., but slows down at the top of a loop... And the way Alex slides into the next note..., the intensity and speed of his vibrato..., and how he varies them as he goes... It's extremely expressive..., and really makes you feel it... This video...? Nope...
Yes John. All of that taste and style is what makes Rush actual artists not just musicians. There are loads of technicians out there who can play the parts exactly. That isn’t hard at all for a pro level player. It’s the artistry that makes it magic. And the originator will always capture that better than anyone copying the parts. In Rush’s case, the artistry is at a very high level, especially with Alex, which is on clear display in Xanadu. He’s one of the most artistic players of any genre anywhere, and doesn’t really get enough credit for that.

Very good guys. Rush (A farewell to kings) with Max Webster (High class in borrowed shoes) was one of my favourite Toronto concerts CNE August 23, 1977. This song also got me through grade 12 poetry, it was the poem Ode to Kubla Khan along with numerous other Rush classics. Cheers

A gloriously outstanding attempt at the Rush masterpiece, which NO other group would attempt!! Primus sucks and does what NO other group could because they are outstanding musicians. I applaud the group for not even attempting, but for doing the piece justice.
Yeah, just imagine what sort of legacy Primus could have if they wrote and performed music up the level of their raw talent. Their songs are demented bullshit in my opinion, but they certainly can play.

Hah!, can’t stop thinking of the girl that was stoked to get asked to go see Primus by a guy she’s been interested in (Rush is ‘hot girl repellent’, in case you are new to their work, and Xanadu of all gems, hah!!!!) Probably some of the coolest, smartest, and best people you have ever met, Rush fans, for whatever reason, are generally going to be the people who would rather watch star trek or twilight zone re-runs instead of the Oscars, Kardashians, or anything mainstream or “cool”. I was fortunate enough to see Primus open for Rush back in high school and the recent passing and life story of Neil was so truly sad, this video is heart warming as I’m sure these guys miss Rush as much as any of us. This was NOT a 5 minute rehearsal to get this nailed down,well played lads.amazed and impressed.i worked tirelessly for weeks on end to nail a rush track with an old band of mine.their music aint a piece of pie...the timing can get you in a flash.much appreciated.

I saw three shows on the Roll The Bones tour. On the two shows that Primus opened, Les' bass sound alone was as loud as Rush's whole band. And it worked!
