Saw them as support with Rush in 1992. The audience was offended and the reaction was paradox. They were very funny and played short riffs of Cygnus X-1 between their songs. Very memorable concert. Great!

roll the bones tour, as i recall. i thought the audience reaction was way off because they kept screaming "primus sucks!!!!". silly me didn't realize that was their slogan, lol.
i saw mr big open on the presto tour, and they were smart, playing "addicted to that rush" as their final number, and the audience joined in screaming "RUSH" in the line breaks of the chorus. good times, good times......

I was at the opener of that tour, in Panama City. During Rush’s set, the roadies brought a bound and gagged Les Claypool onto the stage, then carried him off.
That was the second biggest applause Claypool got. The biggest was when he interrupted his own song in the opening set and played the starting bass line of Cygnus.

This album and Hemispheres to ne are really one album because of Cygnus X-1 Parts One and Two.
I remember reading that Hemispheres was not even in the cards and a sequel song wasn’t intended, but yet it kind of just happened. Neil said it was probably the hardest album of their career because they were in that rut of making twenty minute long songs and even though creativity was what they wanted, commercialism would probably kill their career if they not switched gears.
Hence Permanent Waves opened the door they needed.

I hardly listen to the 70's stuff (except on live 2000s albums because they refined it): too indulgent, too primitive, too immature. Rush didn't really start until 1980. '80 - '91 were the best years. The song craft was just leaps over the 70's.

@duneedon I resonate with that comment hard. Just saw them back in September at the oakdale in ct with my dad. He was both a big rush and primus fan back in the day. I mostly knew primus from a few songs and the South Park theme but after this concert I fully accepted them as virtuoso musicians (claypool was alway a genius, but the band as a whole)
It sucks I’ll never be able to see rush or any of the classic great bands live again. My all time favorite was Van Halen but that ship has since sailed….

I remember my Dad not really getting my 3 x 5 foot Rush poster, with the Kimonos and the makeup. I tried to explain. Talked about Neil's lyrics, and about their musicianship... he sorta got it, but not really. I had casettes of Caress of Steel and Permanent Waves on repeat on a boombox one time when my stepdad dropped me off at some house for the weekend to paint the guys kitchen. He said I'll be back Sunday night. I had a sleeping bag and some sandwhiches. Turned out to be the SciFi Author Poul Anderson's house. He had a Tolkien award on the fireplace mantle. I had never heard of him, but thought that was a pretty cool thing to have. He also had a vicous parrot, which was out of his cage, on top, and I had real trouble shimmying by him every time I had to go to the bathroom. I'm the same age and from the same area as Primus. Lots of shows at The Berkeley Square, and the Nightbreak on upper Haight. If you were broke and waited halfway through the show, you'd probably get in for free. Later on I saw them on a bill with the Pixies and Jane's Addiction. That was a memorable night. Been going back through Rush for the last few months, including the interviews. I liked the film taken in Alex's house when his parents were trying to persuade him not to drop out of high school. ruclips.net/video/M977GFRWDmY/видео.html

Man! You just took me back to my favorite time of my life! I mixed all those shows including the Berkeley Square show that is the Suck On This album, though I mixed the live show, and Matt Winegar recorded the show multi track in the back room and later mixed the album. The Nightbreak was my favorite bar in the whole Bay Area. I used to go skateboard in the park on Sushi Sundays, and then end up at 2:00 PM sitting at the end of the bar where I could see the stage, reach behind me and get sushi from Koji, (who I understand has passed on) and get a Bass ale from Karen, my favorite bartendress of all time. Huge crush on that girl. I would have married her, but alas, she fell in love with Buck Naked, who worked the door at the Nightbreak and the I-Beam, and fronted his psychobilly band, Buck Naked and the Bare Bottom Boys, until "pigeon man" shot him in the pan handle one day. We all cried our eyes out at the funeral in the catholic cathedral on Masonic. *sniffle* All our favorite bands played all those clubs including the I-Beam. Primus did their little known side project Bob Cock and the Yellow Sock there a couple of times, playing Pink Floyd's The Wall with Adam Gates fronting as Bob... Then there was Johnny Moon and the Lunatics, a side bar of the Limboemaniacs with Brian Keoh doing his version of Frank Sinatra.... "Get a room for that!" The house sound guy, Randal Shearrer has also passed on sadly.... Then there was the Omni in the east bay. I worked there for 3.5 years. My first house gig. Also my first time mixing Primus, where I met them. Their roadie was also the roadie for The Looters, who I mixed. He introduced me to Primus. "I want you to meet my friend's band and do sound for them...." THen there was the Stone on Broadway, the Fab Mab Mabuhey Gardens, the On Broadway, Wolfgangs, and of course the Filmore and the Warfield.... Ahhhh. Those were the days....Skateboarding Fort Miley and the Berkeley Tennis courts and the Vallejo Ditch....

@@MrRioting Okay! Took awhile, but I didn't forget. Sad about Koji. Sorry to hear it. Remember the white woman and Red Man? So, first question - there were two pigeon men, and I never figured out which one did it for certain. There was the tall guy, mostly in the Mission, who had that daily bulletin he'd write and hand you from his trenchcoat (with the pigeon in there as well). It was in his own scrawl and often barely decipherable, but there was always a train-of-thought gem or two in there somewhere. The other guy had darker hair I think (not gray), and was more often up that way - So likely him? Great memories of interesting times you have on the sound board. Pretty sweet time and nice to have been where you were. Remember MIRV? The Unabomber song... particularly catchy. And they were the Bastards at the front and back on Seas of Cheese. Next thought. I remember one afternoon particularly, at the Nightbreak. I'd been there the night before, and was back in the afternoon - New Years eve and New Years Day. No clue what year. There was a moment on that day - at the bar, drink in hand, after a few good conversations, in a lull. This collective moment where taking it all in caught on and everyone came to the same moment. Without anything said, people started smiling and, as least as I saw it, we all kind of reflected on the passing of time, and there was this communal ...Yup... Last year kinda kicked our ass... Fucking life. Here we go again. People were grinning now. And then beers were raised. A very nice memory. Another thought. I dated a girl for half a summer in there somewhere. She was a baker. Maybe Mary? I forget. She and Buck had dated at some point. I never knew him past a hello or two. Another memory. There was an absolutely stunning blonde bartender at the I-Beam for awhile. Short hair, big tits and her tight shirt. Had a real attitude though. After awhile we didn't like each other. I really don't remember how that happened. One night me and a roommate walked up to go to a show. We come up off the stairs and we both stop in our tracks at seeing her behind the bar. I said What? He said - that bartender hates me. I said - she hates me too! Let's get a drink. Yeah. Good times. Did you ever go to the Purple Onion? I was tight with Tom Guido in the last year that he had it. He was getting more erratic at that point. Time went on and S.F kept getting ruined and I left. Been in Portland after some moving around since '02. A couple of years ago I'm watching a tv show and it looks like it could've been filmed on those steps for a sec so I looked up what happened to it. I ended up at a page in PBS's site somewhere that had an obituary for Tom. I didn't know he was dead. Hit me pretty hard. There was a photo of him at the top.I took the photographers name and followed that. I wrote her out of the blue and said, I just learned about Tom. I found your pic. How did you know him? it's really hitting me hard, and I don't have a soul up here to share a single memory with, so I'm just gonna share some with you. And I did. She wrote back and said she had no idea they had used that pic, hadn't given permission, and that yeah, it's truly sad. Let me know his mental health kept going after losing the club, ended up homeless, and was stabbed one night. She also said she was writing a book about him. Her band played their a ton in the heyday, and she got everyone from that whole scene to share memories and pics on a fb page, which she collected, and published. All proceeds went to North Beach Citizens, a non-profit helping homeless and low income. That was really nice to hear. The strangest thing to me, is that in the entirety of the internet, I chose one person to contact, and it ended up being her, and she was doing this. From a photo she had no idea was even up. Strange world. That page is Remembering Tom Guido and the Purple Onion - The Book and Documentary, if you're interested. Final memory. From Portland, my girlfriend and I drive down to see Primus and Gogol Bordello in Sacramento, and visit friends. At the show, pre-show, in this big venue, there's a few hundred people sitting on the main floor. We have our spots. The place held maybe six or eight thousand? A lot anyway. After settling in, we look around a bit, and right next to us are two friends from ten years prior that I'd lost track of. In that whole place. Small world sometimes.

I'm sure they get more out of playing this than the audience do . . . Would love to hear Rush doing a Primus cover although that's pretty unlikely now.

It's more than just a cover. It's really cool when a band covers a song they would have written themselves. It's in the same vein even though the bands are totally different.

With Farewe to Kings and Hemispheres Rush were on a completely different level. Entering the 80s is where things became really interesting.
No, disrespect to early Rush especially Caress the Steel and Fly by Night.

  • @dancampbell9151
    @dancampbell9151 2 года назад +1

Appreciated the effort, but RUSH - Primus is not. I know how much Primus appreciates RUSH and is no doubt their number one fan, but I think they would better served to stick to their shtick - like Wynona's Big Brown Beaver - loved that one - that was great 😁 or Jerry Was A Race Car Driver. RUSH is hard to duplicate and while I do appreciate the effort - sometimes it is best to let the Masters cover their own and leave it at that. I do have only one CD where RUSH themselves dedicated the whole CD to cover tunes of those that inspired them. Needless to say - they did the cover better than the original artist - but I maybe a little biased. Other than that - as far as I know - RUSH never did cover tunes - they only covered their own. But hat's off to Primus - it tells me what RUSH means to them - and it is: "Closer To The Heart" Cheers!
