This is perfect for manga reader. Like Tachiyomi. Too bad it wouldn't do well with manhwa because they are often long strip and had to be scroll fast. E-ink have colored version so that's not an issue
what I really want is a 24 inch e-ink monitor. Would be so awesome for displaying semi-static stuff in the office, like an online calender for example, without wasting too much energy or fighting the sun all the time.

This is the first time iirc "mainstream brand" doing this
Onyx Boox e-readers were based on Android. I had a cheap one (C65 Classic) and it barely allowed you to make use of the system. There was no touchscreen. It didn’t even let you access the filesystem. I figured out a way to sideload apps on it by using the included cloud service, but they have shut it down, so you would no longer be able to use it this way. The more expensive models included a touchscreen and better specs, the one I had was like a stripped down version that only had Android because that’s what all others had. I don’t have it anymore though. It fell and the screen broke, and I got it replaced on the shop’s insurance with a different cheap reader that is worse in some aspects and the UX feels less polished. But at least it works, and it allowed me to experience the feel of two different devices. I see that Onyx makes devices with a pen now as well, so it’s not only the big makers.
I actually want this concept in my life, it looks great for taking notes and I'm sure manga will look great on this, but the overall user experience (basic tasks like switching between apps and scrolling) look really bad, also the price is way too much. May 60Hz e-ink displays with variable refresh rates (similar to LTPO displays) arrive soon.
I had a very similar device from ONYX. Manga actually didn't look that good. You either have some annoying ghosting or you need to refresh after every page flip which only takes like a second but subjectively really slows down the reading process. The contrast is also lower than on normal paper which is absolutely ok for text but wasn't great for drawings with shading. In the end I much prefer my Samsung OLED tablet for digital manga.
My reply keeps disappearing here, but yes. Edge is Chrome in a way. They both make use of Chromium as a base. It is why you can install extensions from the Chrome store. Personally, I'd prefer Chrome over Edge, but yeah.
The problem I guess is that UI has to be designed for custom chips. Like a slower and power efficient chip can be used, but u would have to make the UI from ground up. Which is a lot of work. For a device that is very niche.
This depends totally on which ereader you use. Boox ereaders can install kindle, and many other apps. And they react very quickly. Take note that this is NOT a tablet, it's an ebook reader, and the e-ink technology is slow in refreshin, so it's NOT MEANT to be used as a tablet, and you can't expect it to do so. However, the boox tablets can actually even play videos on the higher settings, with slight ghosting, so they're actually quite advanced.
You are talking about e-ink as if it is only meant to be used on e-readers. I mean compared to LCD and OLED displays, you get the advantage of being able to read outside without wasting an incredible amount of battery, it only consumes energy when it is refreshing and it isn't as harmful to your eyes as LCD or OLED displays (because it reflects light, instead of exposing you to direct blue light). Besides that, you are supporting this amazing technology in becoming faster, more contrasty, and colored. There are already Dasung e-ink monitors that are absurdly fast compared to this one.

This was back in 2014, so I'm not sure you can find the software for it easily anymore, but it was fun.
first of all…Huawei isn’t full Android, yes. but that doesn’t have downsides. Just sideload an APK of the app you want. (also Kindles don’t have Play Store either).
I use Onyx Boox Poke 3 as eReader with e-ink screen. I use it as eReader and it is ok. Pros are playstore apps: kindle, Headwey and other android apss that I used on phone are awailable on my eReader too. Another great thing is a plenty of memory capacity (32GB and awailable 22GB wich is for eBooks and some music for reading endless memory). "Downside" is battery life (3 days to week - kindle has weeks of batterylife) and the screen itself has a little less contrast than kindle devices, but it is not bad at all.
okay so first : 1. do you have to use phones many days consecutively? 2. E-ink screen is aimed for non-animation, I mean, you know how it works. Yea it's kinda weird to see HarmonyOS on that device but still, don't expect too much when it comes to e-ink screen since this kind of screen is definitely not suitable for most of tasks on Android which have many animations.
It's unfortunate these aren't as popular or focused on as much. I think the idea of having an e-ink replace regular paper, or even note taking, would be such a fantastic and great economical choice. Imagine not having to waste millions of pieces of paper, and instead using just one device to replace it all. They're cooler, have a ton more functionality, and they last years. I've had my Kindle Paperwhite for 4 years now and it still lasts about 2 weeks on a single charge with moderate reading sessions(2-4hrs).
I think most e-readers on the market currently use a modified version of Android. I have a Tolino EReader, and while it doesn't look like android at first after a bit of digging around I found that it definitely runs Android and I even got into the bootloader which looks like the one on any other android phone. So it's not the eInk + Android that makes it weird it's the fact that they used a Phone/Tablet distribution of Android.
I mean, Wear OS smartwatches are also based on Android, but they tend to last a ridiculously long time. Some of them even get to last up to 2 weeks. Therefore, It’s not always about the OS, rather about how it’s optimized.

first of all…Huawei isn’t full Android, yes. but that doesn’t have downsides.
“The battery life ONLY lasting a few days”
Other e-ink displays are able to last significantly longer, some up to a month. So in comparison, this is remarkably substandard.
I skipped a beat when he dropped the tablet in the end. Thank god he has that fluffy carpet.
I had a Yotaphone2 with an e-ink screen and was super convenient. I couldn't find a replacement ever since :(
okay so first :
1. do you have to use phones many days consecutively?
2. E-ink screen is aimed for non-animation, I mean, you know how it works. Yea it's kinda weird to see HarmonyOS on that device but still, don't expect too much when it comes to e-ink screen since this kind of screen is definitely not suitable for most of tasks on Android which have many animations.
You go to a table, lay the book flat and crack it open to reveal the "paper". Cool thing they taught us in school!
This kind of devices really amazed me i hope i could get one soon!!! ❤
I was shocked when you said a few days of battery life is too small💀
Even at 60fps e-ink still gets you better battery life.
If it was significantly responsive, I think it is worth to give it a try.
Imagine having an ebook and not being able to use the main ebook platform
The purpose of e-ink is to remove the glare on the screen but this one still have it.
Damn that calculator is slow af, I could never.
I just wish that Amazon comes out with e ink with pen like this one. I really like the Kindle ecosystem.
Thanks - great review. What audio recorder is that?
Great idea, mixed execution. Hopefully Huawei (or a more reliable company) can come up with a v2
Omgggg this is exactly what I’ve been waiting for!
Absolutely floored at the cost. Should be around $150 at most.
It looks so stylish
I think they use their OS as a starting point.
I wish I knew more and could help them pivot it away into an e-ink optimized system.
Beautifully created.
If it had a normal google play store it would be an instant buy for me.
Then get an Onyx Boox Note Air 2 or something similar. They have the play store on their devices.
Bought a boox air 3 c.
Great device for reading and note taking.
Many compliments are about video lag but e ink is not built for that refresh rate. For me it to minimize distraction while having Access to certain apps i use.
I think they should've made a two screen version. IPS on the front and E-INK on the back.
My hopes are dashed once again. Someday I’ll get my e-paper note tablet that runs Kindle natively and has a stripped-down OS for great battery life.
Onyx?
@@HenriZwols Wow, good call. Those have come a long way.
Can you talk about that cool screen behind you? Is that a screen saver?
