Hobbits are naturally hard to detect. Virtually invisible to most, if they hide. Also, Smaug had never encountered a Hobbit and was unfamiliar to their scent. Smaug could smell a dwarf burglar a mile away. Hobbits were even unknown to Treebeard, one of the oldest inhabitants of Middle Earth, at least 11,000 years old.
‘Smaug & Sauron’ The Quest of Erebor bit in Unfinished Tales (which contains many of the information shown in this video) has always been one of my favorite stories in Middle Earth as it expands the relatively simple story of The Hobbit by showing just how important Thorin and Co.’s adventure (and Bilbo joining it) was in determining the fate of Middle Earth.
In lieu of the insulting statements from the actors about the Rings of Power being "the story Tolkien never wrote" I do feel like that one moment from the first Hobbit film between Galadriel and Gandalf really is the "scene Tolkien never wrote". I mean how perfect is that exchange? It perfectly encapsulates Gandalf's dynamic with the world around him and gives insight into how he makes his choices. My favorite part is it shows how Gandalf, a Maiar, is just as susceptible to the things of the world as Sauron is, only in Gandalf's case, he lets compassion, courage, and fear influence his actions. Why else would he choose Bilbo Baggins, of all the people in Middle-Earth, to join him on his quest? Is it just me who feels that way?
The ROP is vastly different from the triology. As they said: "everything that Tolkien never wrote". Means it has NOTHING to do with Tolkien at all. Whereas you said a "SCENE that Tolkien never wrote". Remember, who wrote the LotR? Who chose Bilbo Baggins? Is it Gandalf or JRR Tolkien himself? I can see well enough since the first age, Sauron overlooked Beren to have a design on Silmarils. Bec he is powerless human being, just a servant of the more powerful elves. Sauron is more warry of the elves than the men at the time. He thought its Fingond who have the design on the silmarils, but he is very wrong. He didnt know that the silmarils is the bride price of Thingol for Luthien. Fingond has no plan to steal it. He was there bec of his OATH to the Ring of Barahir, which is in the possesion of Beren at the time. So Sauron killed Fingond but imprisoned Beren only. Until such time Luthien came and rescued Beren but its too late for Sauron bec he was wounded by Huan. Then come the third age. Sauron made his mistake all over again, by overlooking the hobbits. Aside from the fact the hobbits are smaller people and more powerless than the men and more than in hiding in their own place and have no cares of the outside world affairs. I think Gandalf has more than the instinct or insight for that.
@@evenstar1608 It is as Gandalf himself said. "Saruman believes it is only great power that can hold evil in check, but that is not what I have found. I have found that it is the small, everyday deeds of ordinary folk that keep the darkness at bay. Small acts of kindness and love" That's as close to Tolkien as you can get without Tolkien himself.
@@iconicnzz6414 Or as it is as Peter Jackson can be. Remember, PJ had said they promised themselves not to put their politics on the movies. It is what we can say too in our perspectives or interpretation on the essence of the book. Not the "Everything that is Not Tolkien". Such an arrogance and disrespect of Tolkien.
@@evenstar1608 ah, so it had nothing to due with the fact that Bagins, Brandybuck, and Took were basically the equivalent to princes of the Hobbits because of their lineage, no much different than Aragorn, Legolas. "Bilbo was very rich and very peculiar, and had been the wonder of the Shire for sixty years, ever since his remarkable disappearance and unexpected return." -- The Fellowship of the Rings, "A Long-expected Party"
I've read The Quest For Erebor and Gandalf was certain that Sauron would attack Lothlorien and Rivendell and with Smaug he'd most likely be victorious. Gandalf had tried to convince the White Council, but was always gainsaid by Saruman who was searching for the Ring in the Anduin River himself and only changed his mind when his spies told him that Sauron had started searching the river near the Gladden Fields where Isildur was killed. Gandalf was also certain that Sauron would not let an assault on Erebor happen unless he had other things on his mind that made an attack upon Dol Guldur extra important. Thorin did not want Bilbo to come and even Gandalf's warning about having a foresight didn't scare him very much. He told Gandalf that maybe he had a foresight or was merely crazed from too many worries. Gandalf replied that he certainly had enough concerns with one of them being a "proud dwarf who asked him for advice with no claim on me that I can see" and then doesn't listen to him. He finally convinced Thorin by telling him that he was fond of this hobbit and if you treat him right he'd have Gandalf's gratitude for the rest of his days. That affected Thorin more than the warnings and he agreed Bilbo could come.
Yes, Smaug could have been a powerful ally, but could Sauron have persuaded the dragon to give up even one coin of his hoard or leave it unguarded? In many ways, that vast treasure could have been more valuable to Sauron than Smaug. With all that gold, Sauron could have bought whole mercenary armies and bought alliances.
Not a massive point, but as an observation that fine tunes the meaning - rather than me being a pedant - when Gandalf is discussing what type of hobbit he wants he says “a foundation of the SOLIDER sort - i.e. “someone more solid” not “soldier”, which would give an inaccurate and misleading military aspect. A subtle distinction! (See 7:10 mark in the video)
Eru Ilúvatar obviously wanted the good guys to win and often intervened directly (ressurecting Gandalf, making Gollum fall in to the abyss). I can't think of any scenario where Sauron would have won.
There is one; If the men of Middle Earth had fallen to the same sort corruption as those of Numenor had. Eru doesn't help those who do not want to be helped. This is reflected in both his reaction to Numenors turn to evil, as well as the mission that is given to the Istari; They aren't there to hold the darkness back themselves, but to guide the free peoples in doing so.
SAURON N SMAUG would be a deadly alliance but not because of brute power but the intelligence and knowledge each brings. In retrospect SMAUG was killed by a bolt that pierce his opened skin, once can say that the alliance of men dwarves and Elf would have thousands of those bolts flying in the air that will eventually kill Smaug. But Sauron was inches away from defeating the Alliance if not for Isuldur being lucky and cutting the ring of power from Sauron’s finger. Needless to say Smaug would have tilted Sauron’s fortune and will more than likely spell the doom of the Alliances.

I just wish we had a better idea how he might've thought they'd pull it off, especially once he withdrew to go deal with the Necromancer. I also wish Smaug could have been useful. I frequently complain about how little it felt like Sauron used his supernatural power, allies, and crafting skill to fight his enemies; he mostly just used simple soldiers, and power through numbers strategy. None of the Orcs were "special"; none had superior skills, or kit crafted by Sauron. He didn't seem to use his power to fight on his own behalf. A great, flying seige engine, impervious to many weapons, and bellowing gouts of withering flame, could have gone a long way towards really pressing the advantage, and making the heroes have to work for the win. I liked the story, and I know Sauron was doing stuff, but the D&D Dungeon Master in me wished he would seem more monstrous, and a supernatural threat, instead of what we got.
BROKEN SWORD Here`s a really big "What If" for you! We know that Sauron wanted his Ring of Power back, and Smaug coveted all things made of gold. So, what if Smaug had killed Bilbo with his dragon-fire when Bilbo was searching for the Arkenstone, and the dragon-fire exposed the gold ring in Bilbo`s pocket. Would Smaug have understood what the little golden ring was, and if so, would He have used it himself, or just tossed it in his big hoard of Dwarf gold to be long forgotten? Now...If Sauron then discovered that Smaug now had the Ring, would He have attacked the Lonely Mountain to get it back? Hmmmmmm..!
- a retconned explanation that didn't happen anywhere in the original book, to cover-up the fact that Gandalf chose him, just to _d*ck_ with him for saying "Good Morning" to him.
Smaug & Sauron Yes, I believe that the outcome would be different. If you see on how the battles at Erebor went during the war of the ring... If Smaug was still there, then there would be a huge threat from the north. As there was no defense from the dwarves there... Sauron would also have spare soldiers ready to battle at another place. Since he didn't need to send soldiers to Erebor because of Smaug allready be there. I have no clue if the Elves from Mirkwood would be able to slay a dragon like Smaug. Plus, I wonder if the Army of the Dead would be able to kill such a dragon. IF Smaug would join Sauron, he probaply would ask something of great worth in return. Also, if the war was over in favor for Sauron (or Sauron would win anyway), Smaug probaply could have his eyes set towards Mordor, like some sort of betrayal like Saruman did. I know Smaug really loves gold. But I have no idea if the rings of power would have the same effect on Smaug as normal gold, or would enlarge his 'love' for gold. And since Sauron would probaply be having the One Ring anyway if he'd won the war... I also wonder, if Smaug would joing Sauron, why wouldn't there be any other dragons (or large creatures) join Sauron?
It is always an interesting question why Gandalf gets involved with the Dwarves. Looking at the bigger story Gandalf knows how big a threat Smaug could be if he joined Sauron. Kind of makes me realize that Gandalf is just using the Dwarves and not really caring of they succeded our not, as long as Smaug was defeated.
Melkor had glaurang, are far more powerfull duo., Between the Mormegil & the Valar wrestler they finished them both, forever & lets face it Sauron had Orcs, Melkor had legions of Balrogs & was amost as powerfull as Manwe
No its not & you should know why he involved himself with the great dwarf lords in previous ages, ? No . for the same reason he involved himself with the elves, the hobbits, Tom bombadil & radagast, to give & recieve council & he stayed with bombadil for some yrs after the war of the rings.does that answer your question?
@@markbritton6798 I might have phrased it a bit harsh but he does not seem as concerned with the Dwarves and their adventure as he does with the Fellowship. Half of the Hobbit, Gandalf is off doing other things.

For the answer, all you have to do is replay the scene from the movies when Gandalf is trying to decide whether to choose Bilbo Baggins (who was sitting outside his Hobbit hole smoking a pipe) or his next door cousin Bozo Baggins (who was passed out in the garden with his pants halfway down his legs). Then Bozo Baggins let out a loud belch and Gandalf decided to talk to Bilbo.
I think it would have made a big difference, just one dragon was able to hold its own against army’s.. even thranduil knew the danger of going against Smaug
Dont forget the dwarves had heat resistant Helms & armour. your ascribing too much power to the Drakes,& their were far worse drakes killed by single men & elves! Smaug was a pussy cat compared to those in previous ages
I think that the greed of sauron and smaug would have been too great for an alliance to be a long lived venture. I believe that the people of Middle Earth seeing their impending doom upon the horizon would have had to choose their new master sauron or smog. I think they would have picked smog.
Smaug joining Sauron would've been curtains for the free peoples. Imagine having an asset like Smaug in any of the sieges for example, Helms deep and Minas Tirith would've been burnt to the ground and completely overrun.
Who really knows what made smaug any different from any other drake, they all have a soft spot even gauthrang had a soft belly, what made smaug different? i be surprised if anyone can tell me that answer. i know but do you?

Bilbo Shapiro in the thumbnail
Bilbo looks like Ben Shapiro in the thumbnail no offense to Mr Baggins
So glad I’m not the only one who saw this!
@@markbritton6798 Still, it would have been a great asset
Question of the day- no because "So comes snow after fire, and even dragons have their endings.” - J. R. R. Tolkien
Is that so! i referyou to north korea
Where does that quote come from, im just interested, it's one iv either forgotten or not encountered
Its the same as saying " All good bad things must come to an end?
@@markbritton6798 it is from the Hobbit books,Bilbo said it. What it means is that evil always comes to an end sooner or later.
@@Aurora-qn2dx Not at all, it came from my dad who said " all good things must come to an end" he'd pause & add that is way, but it implies so must all all bad things end
Oh, like he had a plethora of choices!

Perhaps I am afraid and Bilbo gives me courage.
Well, no family and no responsibilities.
I think an alliance between Smaug and Sauron would have spelled trouble for middle earth
Well that was the plan
I feel Smaug would try betray saron
Would ever be doing a video on Prince imrahil of dol amroth and it's people's
It’s on the list 😁
Smaugron?
I think that the greed of sauron and smaug would have been too great for an alliance to be a long lived venture. I believe that the people of Middle Earth seeing their impending doom upon the horizon would have had to choose their new master sauron or smog. I think they would have picked smog.
Because of Bilbos bursting pantry 🍖🍗🍞🥩🧇
Excellent video as always-but does anyone else think that Bilbo looks like Ben Shapiro in the thumbnail
Courage
If smaug had lived the north would have fallen and the goblins armies would have surrounded gondor and rohan
Because Tolkien told him to.
Because Bilbo showed out a little with the smoke rings. Gandalf don’t play like that.
😂
Yes he does they had a smoke ring blowing contest & gandalf won
Okay, why does Bilbo look like Ben Shapiro in the thumbnail though?
Yes, Smaug and Sauron plz
Smaug joining Sauron would've been curtains for the free peoples. Imagine having an asset like Smaug in any of the sieges for example, Helms deep and Minas Tirith would've been burnt to the ground and completely overrun.
Can you do a video on the Christian themes and influence in the Lord of the rings series

Glaurang scuse the mix up
gauthrang was the sword that ened him

@@marcusaurelius9577 More like Bilbo becomes an Israel obsessed sympathizer and doesn’t let anyone else speak during the books/movies because he rewrote all the dialogue for himself. He’s a good fit for a hobbit, though. Same height. Just add the really obnoxious nasal voice that sounds like it’s coming from a boy who hasn’t hit puberty and you’ve got Benbo Bagpiro.

Purely from military point of view if smaug will join forces with Saron forces many things will go differently..Minastirith will collapse, as well as osgiliath defences will not hold delayed Eye forces to cross bridge s, and probably whole hobbiton will be burn into ashes long before any party will gather there to carry on with ring mission..
Agreed! It wouldn’t be pretty for the forces of good!
@@TheBrokenSword Was there something special about the archers or bows of Dale?
I understand that Gandalf feared Smaug not knowing part of his gem covering was weakened, but surely each of the havens of good have talented archers, and he would have been confident of getting at least _one_ elf to bear a bow against a dragon.
I suppose the forces of evil might have parleyed with Smaug and pointed the weakness out, or Smaug, not going to battle in anger might have taken the time to check his armour over - but I can't help to feel that a great archer could have overcome Smaugs - let's face it, pretty but compromised armour design.
With Smaug being defeated by the men of Dale - unless there is something special about them, then the great elf or human warriors could have performed the same feat, even with Smaug patching up his armour, and then, his felling would have dismayed the enemy?
I just remembered, the black arrow! Of course, without that, the other strongholds would have few weapons capable of felling Smaug! Now to check to see if you have a video on the story of the black arrow!
@@PippetWhippet there’s really nothing saying the Black Arrow was anything but a family heirloom. I think the key was the thrush overhearing Bilbo tell the dwarves of the missing scales near Smaug’s armpit and then telling Bard. Being an heirloom, Bard was hesitant to shoot the black arrow until he had exhausted all his other arrows. Knowing he was in a desperate and grim situation, he knew the last arrow must count and it did!
So funny that you used Ben Shapiro as a hobbit in the thumbnail. 😂
Smaug & Sauron
Of course I would choose Bilbo! The lad looks like a splitting image of Ben Shapiro. Quite useful if you're trying to destroy a dragon... Or at least, its left wing.
Why is Bilbo Ben Shapiro in the thumbnail?
Smaug and sauron
As Gandalf resurrected to the white he was basically immortal. No weapon could harm him but this is barely touched upon in the films & rarely commented on, iv yet to see another?
We all know why... Gandalf says it himself in the books and the movie. Don't need your explanation
Bilbo Baggins is... Ben Shapiro???
I love LotR so makes. I know it’s off topic but it’s so infuriating Amazon is using such an insane amount of money to turn Tolkien’s work into a joke. Imagine that kind of money in the right hands to make LotR content that’s accurate to the source. Think GoT type of work and world building with the same financial backing with the technology of 2022 but the charm and respect the LotR movies had. Instead, we’re going to get a politics course and a product of affirmative action. Tolkien is rolling over in his grave.
Why don’t you wait for the show to come out before actually passing judgment.
@@rossburnett9546 Lmao, because we’ve already seen the cast, snippets of the show being incredibly lore breaking.
