I think Opeth's brilliance is the interplay between the brutal and the beautiful. In recent years, they went away from the harsh vocals altogether, and without that looming darkness, it has never been quite the same for me.

Youre not wrong man. The live album is 2 discs and this is the last one on the first disc. I own the live DVD as well.

Yes. More classic black opeth. I am a fan of the more melodic death/black Opeth style; especially when they started heavily experimenting with more progressive elements. So Morningrise to Blackwater park.

Should we make a 70's style Prog/Rock song or a death metal song?
    Opeth: Yes

Well the question about choosing soft or heavy Opeth, that would no longer be Opeth as their sound is the signature juxtaposition or beauty and the beast

This is a doobie song called... this is one of my favorite tracks from early Opeth but imho the keyboards overpower the ending riff that's so amazing, (during you sleep in the light yet the night and the silent water still so dark) so even though this version is great I still prefer the studio version, and I even sing the chords being played during that part as well.

Opeth is good because they have both harsh and mellow parts in their song. Each one has more impact when there is changes in between them. If I would be forced to choose I think I would still go softer side since Mikael writes so nice acoustic parts, but I definitely prefer the mix. Although Damnation for example was a really good record with only soft songs.

Opeth is Taichi(Ying Yang) you cannot have the soft without the hard. You see this especially in this Song, his anger and sorrow over his loss is packed into the fabric (the Song is about the death of Mikael Åkerfeldt's father).

I prefer the mix of heavier and softer side :D Basically the album Still Life was the best iteration of Opeth imo. Blackwater Park is a great album aswell, but I think they have not topped Still Life yet.

still one of my favorite songs ever... in the studio version Mikael actually does whisper the last part of the liyrics, which is even sweeter. since you did ask, I do love both - the softer and the heavy parts, the mix and the inceredible composing is, what got me into oppeth and being a huge lover of their work over the years. they have a tendency to rpolong some parts for just shortly before you get bored and then they move on to something completely different. perfect examples for that are this very song, ghost of perdition, deliverance and, for the softer ones, window pane. songs that give me the goosebumps would be all things will pass, harlequin forrest, beneath the mire or a fair judgement.

I recommend that you listen and make a reaction to the song
"Hope Leaves" or "In my time of Need, from their album" Damntation "... both are incredible, on this album there are only subtle songs, more acoustic ... you will love them!

Although I'm a fan of heavy but as far as opeth is concerned I prefer their soft, mostly because I'm not a huge fan of the harsh vocals or at least not the whole song

Even Mikael who wrote most if not all of it don't like the first two albums and have distanced himself from them (this song is off the second album Morningrise) and hate playing them live but he still play some of the oldest stuff for the fans.

Opeth was a heavy and big band, and now they just choise a new way to do things in metal.
Death metal fans love soft songs, right? Also love extreme heavy songs, right? There's no reason to hate them because they became more soft. It's music, not war
It's sad see a great technical death band became prog, but this isn't a sin

I'm only about three months too late to answer your question but here is my answer. It's not a matter of liking the lighter side of Opeth vs. heavy Opeth. What makes Opeth Opeth is the ability to turn it back and forth, up and down, over and aground. Hence whay I am not that big a fan of the newer stuff. I LOVED the perfect balance of both in each and every song. Every song was a long journey that appealed to all emotions. They newer stuff just doesn't do that.

    • @Celatra
      @Celatra 2 года назад

the new stuff still absolutely has this contrast, it's just a bit more subtle.

  • @levinskevich2180

Their absolute best songs are the ones with mixed soft and heavy parts, this being a prime example.
Hessian Peel is very dynamic in this way, off the Watershed album which came after some lineup changes (the drummer in this video came on right at the time of that live tour, and then the other guitarist left). It's one of their best albums in my opinion, it leans more proggy but has a lot of classical folk elements signature to Opeth's sound.
After that is when they ditched the harsh vocals and death metal style and went into full prog metal. There's a lot to dig into there as well.
