Phenomenal voice . These guys are real musicians . Never got their due recognition because of weak marketing.

Same for me, left when Manowar started. efore Fates Warning I think it was Sabbat, also a classic. Anyway, for me this is Fates in their best moment, thanks for uploading this memory.

I wonder how many "bass and drums-sections" in metal bands just started practicing a lot more during this period??

Remember seeing them play in this hole in the wall place in San Diego . I think it was 87 or 88. I was blown away by Rays voice . So powerful and the bands energy At the time I
couldn't think of any other singer that came close to this kids voice .

Dying, I don't typically or like a prog metal, and I have always heard of this band, but this is the first time of actually listening to them! This dude can sing for real! I would venture to say that Geoff Tate couldn't hang with this cat! Which, you know, Queensryche haven't been metal since "Operation..."

Ray Alder had lost some of his upper
mid range or mid range here you can see that he's avoiding these notes and instead shouting the lyric. His head voice was damn powerful
You can hear on Silent Cries in the verse his voice is cracking on some of these mid range notes.
This is clear even on some no exit songs and especially John Arch songs.
Maybe it just wasn't one of his best nights but even the live recording I found in 1988 he's struggling more than he does here.
I'd love to hear his first performances with Fates Warning. I heard some demos and he was phenomenal on them

Who cares if his voice cracked during a performance. Its live. Jim has always been on point. Music has always been on point.

@@fun-dillo1238 Totally agree, I was just studying Ray Alder and his progress as a vocalist. He indeed damaged his voice sometime on these extensive tours and eventually lost his upper register. I'm just listening to all the shows I can find

    • @fun-dillo1238
      @fun-dillo1238 2 года назад

Yea he lost his highs and mids... but he said his voice changed and can't do it anymore. Times have changed and doesn't require that. Idk. Always been a fates fan

I get so sick and tired of people criticizing Ray's voice. It happens to a lot of singers with age. People criticizing Geddy Lee's voice. Geoff Tate had to drop "Queen Of The Reich" .
When you're touring, that means traveling and you will get sick.
I think his timbre at 56 at the end of Aug. '23 sounds great.
"Silent Cries" sounds great singing it at the range he does on "Live Over Europe".
Like Neil Peart said, "Drumming is the hardest job because it's a physical instrument. But, singing is the worst"

I saw them at Harpo's in Detroit on the Parallels tour and the sound was awful and too loud. That place never sounded right and Ray's voice was off, fights broke out in crowd due to drunken rowdiness and the show ended. Seems like this venue was a bit over the top with its sound system also. Those were the days. The loudest show i ever saw was AC/DC. I still can't hear shit. Anyhow
