You have perfect senses for what the community is struggling with. Normally a complex problem needs a complex solution but not with your channel.
Sometimes the solutions aren't so simple (like multicam multichannel audio), but I'm hoping the blackmagic developers will take a look at some of the work arounds we've all come up with to make it less complex. Thanks so much for the kind words - have a wonderful thanksgiving!
I commented on this yesterday but I have to say, this has changed my life. Little pieces of gold right here! To know that how it looks in Resolve, is how it'll look in quicklook, quicktime, RUclips and Replay is so reassuring and just makes the colour workflow feel so much more seamless. Thanks again!
Like many others on here, I was getting so frustrated with washed out videos on youtube. This answered my problem in a very concise and easy to understand way. Can't thank you enough for ending months of frustration. I've just uploaded a video using your instructions and it was exactly as it appeared in Resolve, perfect! Thank you again, you really are a lifesaver! 😘
This is exactly the video tutorial I was looking for. I have been so frustrated rendering flat, desaturated videos from Resolve for RUclips for a long time. Thanks a million for this.
Great to hear this was helpful. I wish they would make this all "just work" if you picked the youtube preset.
Fantastic tutorial, straight to the point. Love it!
Thank you so much! When ever the question pops up now, I am sending your video to my colleagues and they love it. Seems a very common problem, finally well explained.
Glad it was helpful! and I really appreciate the share - Thanks for watching!
wow what a difference your tips made! thank you so much for sharing these
That was very very helpful. Thank you!
OH MY GAAAAWSH! This is by far THE BEST tutorial/ GEM video out there! Why do you not have over 100k subs?!!!! Thank you for not giving up Brother! Keep them coming and you WILL get them!!! Keep being AWESOME!!!
THANK YOU CHADWICK!!! You literally saved a huge project I'm currently working on!!! This came at the most perfect time. And thank you for responding on the FB group!
Thank you Gavin! I'm so glad this tip was timely for you. I really appreciate you taking time to ask the question on Facebook and being part of this community. Cheers dude!
Thank you so much for this video. I've had this problem for a of couple uploads and had more than a handful of different people on the internet and youtubers have tried to help me... but they never make much sense, explain little and make assumptions. Your video was clear, upfront, concise and it works! THANK YOU!!! 🙏🙏
Furthermore I really like your color grade. It's hard to take advice from people who aren't good at what they're teaching!
Mate, loving your videos. This one I've returned to a number of times to remind me how to get our videos to look sweet on RUclips. Thank you so much, awesome stuff!
Great to hear! Thanks so much for watching Andy.
Very knowledgable and I agree with the comments! Thanks so much.
The amount of value per sec in this video is crazy high! Thank you for this 🙏🏻
Haha, yeah that is my hope. I hate wasted time. Thanks so much for watching and the kind feedback (again) - Cheers dude.
Your tutorials are the best! Thanks
amazing dude. thank you!
Wow, this was so helpful! Thank you
This is so awesome, short and comprehensive at the same time! I'm mad at myself I didn't find this earlier :D
Easy to follow and understand great stuff!
I'm learning so much from your videos. Good job, AGAIN!
Awesome, thank you! I'm stoked to hear you're finding value in my nerdy video obsessions.
This was great! Everything i needed to get the right colors to show. Cheers mate
Love it. So glad it helped.
Was already a subscriber, but I watched like 8 videos from other creators that you described in 4 minutes.... Thanks Chadwick!
Thanks KZ, I try to remove the fluff as much as possible. I really appreciate ya.
Thank you! I have been looking everywhere to figure out what the issue was.
This is so crazy detailed and helpful! Thank you so much! I do love hints that include the reason why I am doing it. I had the issue on PP pro so long...but no one really explained why and what and all where just "compensations" Like compensation LUT. I always felt like no I wanne change my display that way I edit it correctly etc.
Sooooo helpful, thanks a ton!
Your videos have helped me so much in making my client work deliveries so much more professional looking. Thank you bro!
That is so great to hear Jaime! That's the whole heart behind the tips I put on this channel - Thanks for the great feedback and kind words.
Such a great an in depth video. I'd love that kind of video for embedded AAF exports in DaVinci
Great tip, subscribed
Fantastic, thank you so much!
again an absolute banger! the information density in this video is through the roof. i watch most tutorials on 1.5x speed - not this one though. thanks chadwick for delivering consistently top notch content :)
Thanks so much for the kind feedback. I've been excited to share this one because it's intuitive at all for most of us. I really appreciate you!
@@CreativeVideoTips thank you and keep uo the great work! been learning a ton from you :)
WOW! Lots of great nuggets in the short tutorial!
Glad it was helpful! It's a very specific issue, but glad you liked it.
Thank you for this. short and precise help video
Thanks so much for watching!
This sorted out my problem quicksmart! thankyou
Great info as always. Thank you!
You bet!
Whoa I’ve learn more from two video’s I’ve watched so far than any other DR tutorial’s 👍
This is one of the greatest videos ever on color management, especially working on a Mac using log footage. My colors kept being washed out upon render, now they match my exact colors in the edit. Thank you so much for your knowledge and making this tutorial!
Glad it helped!
@@CreativeVideoTips Is this also a problem in Windows?
Always Love your videos Chadwick. Thank you.
My pleasure! Thanks so much for taking the time to watch.
@@CreativeVideoTips Thank you. I greaty enjoy your videos.
Exactly. This was spot on.
Thank you!
Another great solution for my problems. Thanks Chadwick.
You bet. Thanks so much for watching Paul.
Thanks so much! Excellent video that has saved me tons of time, outstanding work! ❤️
dude thank you! I'm sorry i'm so far behind on comments and missed this. I really appreciate your generosity!
Bro, I have been searching for this video for years! I shit you not. I've been racking my brain and asking fellow editors why the color looks washed out on my RUclips exports but everyone just made theoretical guesses and didn't provide a proper fix. You fixed it in 4 minutes.
Cheers dude. Now if only we could get Blackmagic to help make this a preset so nobody needs to have to understand the silly settings to change. :). Thanks for watching.
Messing around the whole time! Thx man! Much appreciate. Same settings for homepages or televisions on fairs?
DUUUUUUUDE!!! I wish I had seen this video before uploading my new one!!! Thank you SO MUCH for this tips! Cheers
Holy hell how much I have struggled with this.... trying every trick in the book and ask around on x amount of forums. Nobody with a good answer and you just drop in with this. Thank you so much sir 👏🏻 cheers from Norway 🇳🇴
You and me both! There is way too much wrong information out there on this topic. I hope this helps and please share it with anyone you might find it useful. Thanks for watching!
@@CreativeVideoTips way ahead of you mate... spreading it as we speak. You should consider making yourself a buymeacoffee page or something like that. You would get some donation from me for this video and some of the others you have made. Amazing stuff mate, keep on rocking !
@tshansen You rock dude. The best way you can help support this channel is just to click and watch if its something you're interested in. If not, then just don't click (I have an interview lighting video coming up that I promised but know a lot of resolve editors might not find it as helpful). Also use any description links to start a shopping spree for Christmas even if you don't buy that item, it still helps if you start by clicking one first and doesn't cost you any extra.
Exaaaaaactly!
You own my first "You saved my life" message :) (after 2 years struggling, i was about to sell my iMac) but now i can keep it :) Thank You!
this man does not miss, thanks for another one!
I appreciate that! Thanks for watching Luke.
Duuuuude thank it came out beautifully
Great!! The first time that my YT video looks exactly like after rendering it. Thanks a million for sharing this!
I have been looking in other channels and nothing worked until I watch this video. Thanks!
Glad I could help - Sorry it is more complicated than it needs to be.
Thanks man! This is such valuable information!
Glad it was helpful!
amazing
thanks!!! so useful!!!!
Thanks for the pro tips. I really need to work on my colour grading. 😁
You're very welcome, we all can use a little color grading love. I would point you to Daryn Mostyn has an excellent channel that focuses more on color specifically. I will have some color tips in the future on this channel too, but my strengths are more on the editorial side.
You're the best, thank you a lot, you save lives
Glad it helped
Big big thank you bro 👊🏼😍
Thank's for this tutorial, I have been using this method for two years and it works well. Except with VLC player I still get colorshift. I guess it must be the platform.
Cheers Richard
Thank you so much!!!!🙏🏾
Any time!
Damn Chadwick so much information that just took my exports and colour to the next level. Thanks a ton.
Hey that's what I like to hear! Very cool. thanks for watching.
Amazing thank you for this
My pleasure!
Hi. A very helpful video, even one year later. Is the information still relevant using Resolve 18.1? A master reference video for RUclips video creation using 18.1 would be very much appreciated, especially colour space & transforms settings. Thanks for the upload 👍
THANKYOU
Hey Chadwick, thanks again for your truly valuable content. I have a kinda off topic issue and if some one can help me, it is probably you... After a couple of years with premiere I ended up using a smaller secondary 16:9 monitor for the actual video playback / footage, above my 21:9 monitor, that solely showed the timeline and other parts of the interface. This way I had a super large timeline which drastically reduced the need for zooming in- and out, as well as scrubbing, whilest giving me a pretty large preview at the same time. This was absolutely game changing to me and made my workflow much more efficient. With resolve it seems that you cannot get rid of the player / preview in the main window / monitor. I know how to get it on the second monitor, but for some odd reason I can't find a way to completely get it off my main monitor. This is wasting a lot of space, even if I make it super small. I ended up not using the second monitor, but now I have to zoom, scroll, scrubb at least 3 times more. It's pretty frustrating. Do you know if there is a way to get rid of the preview on the main monitor? Sorry for the wall of text.
Best resolve video on youtube!
Nice and easy and explained really well! Thanks for the vid. Would I use the same settings when exporting to Vimeo? Cheers!
Hey Chadwick! Thanks for the great and easy tip! Do you know if this problem also occures on windows? And if so, do i need to do the same steps?
Thanks for addressing this! The way it worked for me was to set the Color management to sRGB instead of Rec.709
Thanks for watching and yes sRGB is very close to 709-A and a good option for computer displays.
Thanks for sharing this information. I shoot and edit in BRAW - some of my projects go to Broadcast, some go to You Tube and some... I don't even know (Hulu, Basis, FB ads?). Color is complicated enough when you are a one person band. Going to try and set up some profiles - problem is that sometimes i do not know where ads/videos are going until after they are out the door. Just need to make several versions to be safe and deliver them with that in the titles
How was this video only 4 mins?! I feel like I learnt so much 🙌🏽
Good video. Would be great to explain why you use these settings and what’s happening under the hood. Maybe too technical for a short video like this.
On a side note. Using the white gamut settings messed up my fusion animation in the timeline. They looked like the blend mode changed or lowered blend and color was off (yellow turned greenish). Back to 709-A
Any chance you can make a video of how to adjust colours from iphone video footage pls. love your pace of the videos. thank you
Thank you for this, Im going to try and implement both methods! I get how these are the best settings for Mac users to upload to RUclips. But are they the best settings for comparable colors from screen to screen (tvs, different monitors, phones, etc)? I notice my RUclips videos look overly magenta and saturated on a TV.
Good video. But regarding the gamma shift issue, I find that I’m able to match my color grade exactly and much quicker by simply picking two options at the time I export. For Color Space Tag I choose P3-DCI and for Gamma Tag I choose Rec.709 and it always results in an identical look to what I had graded.
Thanks for sharing! And yes you can override those project settings by doing it in the deliver page. I have found that it is faster for me, especially because I kick out lots of versions of shorter cuts to not needing to mess with changing deliver page settings often (although you can use a preset to do this too). The main thing is always, does the way you view it in resolve (how the monitor is calibrated or managed, match your export settings, and if its for youtube, is it also 1-1-1)?
The problem with this is if you import reference stills (from movies you want to match, for example), the imported stills will not match the actual file. Resolve will display the imported stills as over-saturated, although I suppose you can use a Color Space Transform to fix it. Overall that's even more work than the fix demonstrated in the video.
Thanks for this one, helped a lot. :)
When using the ACEScct workflow, this does not work for me... The export is much brighter than what we see in DaVinci.
Finally, an explanation of this infuriating problem! Thank you!
Glad it helped!
ty!
Thank you!
Finally, spend all day trying to force Gamma 2.4 to youtube... keep going bro, you have good charisma for this project to grow ! P.s. I almost never comment on other videos ;)
Thanks a ton - I really appreciate you and taking the time to leave such encouraging feedback. Cheers!
Best tips and explanation I've seen yet - and worked a treat. Thanks so much °¬º
NB. You could mention if you talk about this again that this also works for videos uploaded to Dropbox Replay.
Great video. Have you used film grain or halation to reduce color banding for RUclips?
Great video! Thanks for sharing! What would you do if you needed to export the same project for both broadcast and web? I've been using Rec709 Gamma 2.4, but am always frustrated with how the graded footage looks on YT or Vimeo.
Bro. Appreciate you in the Davinchi fb group.
Likewise, thanks for asking questions. That's how I learn too. Cheers!
Great vid man! Just wondering does this also apply to Windows computers too?
Hey dude, awesome video, just what I was looking for! 🙌🏻 A quick question... I work with a lot of Rec 709 footage (generally from a GH5 using an adjusted version of the natural colour profile) - would there being any point in working in a colour-managed workspace or using a CST sandwich in these instances?
Thanks a lot for the great information! I'm going to test this out. One question, if you can answer. I have a calibrated Eizo, and it's calibrated to Rec709, gamma 2.4 and brightness 100cdm. Should I recalibrate it with different targets if I set my timeline to Rec709A? I only upload to RUclips.
I alwyas thought colors were off on many of the youtube channels...like i could always pick out the davinci users. thanks for this
You're welcome Chris! Thanks for taking the time to watch, I'm hoping this one will up the game for a lot of Resolve RUclips creators.
I would love a video exactly like this but with FCPX!
Thanks for this video! it helped, could you make a video on how to work with iPhone footage on Davinci Resolve.
This is a great suggestion, thanks! I have a new series starting next week on the "small things". But will add this to my list.
@@CreativeVideoTips Thank you so much this really makes my day!
Hi Chadwick, this is a great tutorial. But I'm wondering, if this solution is to compensate for a washing out that happens on Mac (P3 displays), will the content not look oversaturated when viewed on other displays (srgb or rec709)? Let me know if I'm misunderstanding!
I'm glad I found this because I was pulling what little hair I have left out trying to figure out what I was doing wrong. I made the changes you recommend up until using color managed since I didn't shoot Log and am using a LUT on the current footage. What I notice is that the DR viewer is now showing the less saturated washed out image that we previously saw in the export, which is fine but then I regrade the footage to get the correct saturation etc and I'm noticing the scopes (vectorscope) are all out of whack because they think the image is over saturated. do you experience the same on your side? Also, on the deliver page, under advanced, are you changing the Color Space tag to rec.709 and the Gamma Tag to Rec.709A or leaving them as "Same as Project"?
Wow this video was fully packed with value😍 what settings color gamma tag would you use if you have calibrated your MacBook screen? And also if you use an external monitor that is also calibrated?😊
Thanks Art. If you have a broadcast external monitor, that should typically be set to 2.4 gamma or BT 1886 but there is no transfer function that RUclips understands for this. So it's actually a totally different monitoring process. But if this is your main way you grade, and you are making a youtube export, you can change your gamma setting in the deliver page to rec 709-a there and it should do a translation on export for you. Right now I only use an external display to have a larger view for cutting, checking things like eyeline and focus so I'm strictly working in Rec 709-A with a macbook and MacPro
This is awesome video. I am so thankful to have found your channel. Thanks Chadwick. With that said, do you recommend the first step that you performed for Windows users as well? If not, can you suggest an alternative? Thanks again. :)
Thanks for watching. I really wish I knew a simple answer for you working in windows. I don't know if there is a solid answer there other than getting a calibrated external monitor and using a blackmagic i/o box. I will for sure report back or make a video about it next year if I find a solution, because it's needed for sure. Everyone can't be expected to run external monitoring displays.
Thank you so much for sharing this settings, I subscribed a week ago and I love your videos. Would you use the same settings here with GoPro footage with GoPro colour (NOT flat)?
Hi Davide, Thanks so much for spending some time here. I would absolutely use the same 709-A for Go Pro footage.
@@CreativeVideoTips thank you fro getting back to me. I tried using the settings suggested of color managed however I have a follow up question: I use GoPro shooting with GoPro color (NOT flat) as I have no skills nor time to color correct nor color grade. With color managed setting the clips shot in H.264 (hyperlapses) defaults into the Input Color Space to "Rec.709 (Scene)" and the clips shop in GoPro Color in H.265 are set to "Project - Rec.709 Gamma 2.4" - however if I both set them to Rec.709-A they look a bit less contrasty and more natural. So is Rec.709-A the correct Input color space for GoPro clips shot in GoPro color?
Finally solved the problem! Thank you so much. A thanks for sharing your impressive knowledge of Resolve.
BTW: You recommend exporting in H.265, but when I go through an H.265 Master export, checking it frame by frame, I get severe artifacts every 20 frames or so. Even on my M1 Pro Mac. Perhaps a glitch in Resolve?
Anytime - I'm glad this helped. I have an M1 max and was getting glitches on some footage, but it was fixed with version 17.4.5 that came out a couple weeks ago. If you're not on 17.4.5 I would start with trying that. In particular, I had issues with Canon XF-AVC long gop footage.
@@CreativeVideoTips Thanks again. Just updated last week. Canon R5 footage here, but not a problem decoding, just encoding 265. I will 'go back' to using H.265.
Reg. the color settings: just got perfect colors from a Kodak Portra 800 emulation in Resolve on all the other platforms. Just fantastic!
This was THE most informative video I found so far on this topic. Thanks a lot!! Sorry to bother you with another question but since changing from color proc mode rec709 to HDR wide gamut all LUTs go kind of crazy..(which I sort of expected since they all were made for rec709)- but can they be transformed to the new processing mode?
Well, maybe having a color space transform FX in front and after the LUT node and moving to Rec709/2.4 for this operation....
I’m sure you don’t ever use a PC, but do you recommendations on how to fix the same issue but on a PC?
This is extremely insightful for macs!
Hey, this is great. Thanks so much.
The H265 Master preset defaults to AAC audio. I usually export for YT with PCM audio. My thinking is that they re-encode the AAC along with the H265 but I could be wrong.
I also do it as a failsafe if I accidentally push my audio levels above -14LUF. Perhaps it's less destructive if YT normalise it. Maybe that's a cheat to let YT normalise instead of me tweaking endlessly to get my audio just under -14LUF
hey chadwick, can you do one video or tell here only the settings for Instagram uploads? Would be really helpful.
Would you mind making a video about how to use the 10 bit video from iPhone Dolby vision in Davinci if my monitor is 709 srgb?
Please!? The right way of doing it
Thank for this video! Quick question for you, I have the ultrastudio 3G connect to one monitor and Davinci open in the other but I just can’t make both images inside resolve and the playback to look the same. I find that the monitor with the ultrastudio is way more saturated and contrasty than what’s showing inside resolve. I’ve played around with diff settings but I just can’t make it to match. I see that you also have the ultrastudio, what settings would I need to use? Thank you!
Did you check how this looks on RUclips on a PC, or on Android, or on a TV RUclips app? I tried this once and while it looks spot-on in Quicktime and on RUclips in Chrome on the Mac, it became grossly dark and oversaturated to the point of faces looking all color blotchy on all other devices, including PC users, on the livingroom Samsung TV, for Android users and so on. Now I haven't checked in a while. Did you check? The Gamma 2.2 fix seems a middle ground and it's what I went back to, but then gets too bright on Mac RUclips instead, which is painful too because it's what (I guess) we all use ourselves. I've struggled for 3 years with this issue haha.
Hi there, yep, I’ve check on other devices. The point of this is to make what you see in the resolve viewer match RUclips on the same monitor. If it does then you’ve done the best you can. The differences you see on other displays are because of their unique display calibration settings.
The main thing this tip achieves is the correct 1-1-1 tags that RUclips needs to interrupter the file for all of its own transcoding of resolution options.
Thanks for this information. Would I use those initial 3 settings you mentioned at the beginning of the video if I’m using an M1 Mac mini with a non-Apple display?
Thanks for watching and yes, I would if your main target is for RUclips or online. That use mac display profiles will help maintain consistency. It doesn't mean your monitor is calibrated, but it does mean what you see in resolve is what you should see on that same screen in youtube.
Export 1-1-1 and all perfect!
