Yes, Rodney Dillard and Mitchell "Mitch" Jayne wrote the original version in the 1960's early in their band's career in Los Angeles. Rodney was asked to write a fourth verse, so he called Mitch Jayne and over the telephone call wrote the final verse together, not long before Mitch Jayne passed away I believe it was. Rodney is the only surviving member of the original band The Dillard's.
