What Is A Self-Insert Character? - Deconstructing Storytelling

One of the aspects of storytelling that annoys me the most is the self-insert character. Writers can't create people with unique perspectives. It comes off as lazy, but why do they resort to implanting themselves in the story or making the blandest protagonist imaginable?
