one of the fastest ways to improve is vod review, and catching mistakes you were unaware of while playing. This is even better if sat through with a mentor, which there are many available on the rivals academy discord! I'm not sure if they do rivals 2 stuff yet, but learning rivals 1 tech that carried over is still great, especially for a character like ranno. You can learn how to use his bubble for stuff like survival and recovering long distances to stage, and how to use dart for dart combos and dart boosting. These are all rivals 1 techs, so picking up rivals 1 for a bit could help you between rivals 2 betas. Most importantly, u should be having fun. If ur not, ur probably not improving lol.
I've been loving your Rivals 2 content! :] I'm no expert by any means, but here are a couple tips against Loxodont, if it helps: It seems he struggles against characters that can out-manouver his threat range. It's an early meta, so we'll see how specific matchups develop, but it sounds like Clairen is actually pretty good against Lox because she has a combination of disjoint and speed. If you use that to your advantage, or just keep in mind Lox's threat range and play a patient neutral game, you should be good. But patience in neutral is always useful anyway, so here's another Lox tip: Lox needs to be standing on his magma when it lights up in order to get his magma charges. This incentivizes the Lox player to stand their ground after using certain moves. If Lox's opponent stands on lit magma before Lox does, the magma goes away and he can't gain charge from it. If you pick up on the Lox's habits when you approach them, you can challenge their space and get them off the magma before they can get charge from it. A Lox without charge is less potent in advantage and has fewer options in disadvantage. Also if you parry Lox's up special, he'll have no ledge invincibility if he grabs ledge. If he lands on stage after getting parried, you have a lot of frame advantage and can get a free punish. Clairen's down special will also give any recovering opponent a bad day (plus you can combo her counter into stuff) so that's a useful tool as well. Ranno tip: Ranno is a funny guy with lots of funny tricks. Ask a Ranno player and they'll be happy to help you. I'm mostly just a Clairen player because kitty with sword is literally me.
To build off this as a Ranno player who's been doing pretty good in the betas, some anti-Lox tips: -Loxodont is absolutely terrible at dealing with Ranno's needles in neutral-they interrupt all of his grounded approach tools, build poison stacks, and force him to come to you. -Lox's disadvantage, being both heavy and floaty (a REALLY bad combination), is horrendous against Ranno. In general, he'll have trouble if you put him above you and just track his landings on the ground without overextending vertically. Be ready to shield or outspace a landing option and you can eat him alive for it. In general, the more you work on your punish game and getting the most out of your openings, the better you'll be against Lox specifically. -Like OP pointed out, Loxodont's recovery is really rough for him if you parry it. A lot of Lox players don't carefully space (or reverse) their up-B to avoid being parried, and they'll either land onstage or grab ledge with no invincibility-a parry into Ranno down strong will kill him as early as like 80 for making this mistake. -Lastly, a lot of Lox's strings and "combos" at low percents aren't real, and can just be shielded or floorhugged (hold down and punish him when he hits you, since at low% you won't go anywhere). At 4:44 it looks like Rister gets hit with jab into up tilt, but the only reason that up tilt lands is because Rister tries to jump out of it instead of shielding; it looks like there was a 2 frame gap where he could've shielded and just punished the up tilt on shield. Unironically, holding shield (or mashing jab if you feel a little cheeky) will get you out of a lot of Lox's fake stuff at low percents. If Lox hits you with a jab or an f-tilt at low percents, there's a fair chance you can escape the follow-up.
As a kindred mediocre smash ultimate competitive player that went through the ringer trying to learn Rivals (and trying to main Absa cuz I'm a peach player and everything has to be hard) I resonate with this video. I have never touched Melee so I had to learn the mechanics of rivals like wave dashing as part of core gameplay from scrap and it does feel weird 😅 but it gets better
ive been thinking about playing this game since the original. i main greninja in smash and have always thought id like ranno in this game. hearing you compare him to greninja and seeing you hit what looked like greninjas D-tilt into up smash has reignited my interest in this game. also, does anyone know how gaining access to the open betas works?

Just a tip, Ranno is pronounced either Ran-no or Ron-no. If it was pronounced Ray-no, then it would only have one "n" in it (Rano).

Rivals 2 is definitely more similar to Rivals 1 than Ultimate, but shields, ledges and grabs makes it very different from the first game

i feel that ranno functions more like sheik, but sheik and greninja also play fairly similar.
