I Found a $500 Mixer in a GUITAR CENTER DUMPSTER...and it WORKS??? | Pioneer DJM800

  • In this vid, we'll follow up on something I pulled out of Guitar Center's dumpster about a year ago. This is a Pioneer DJM800 DJ Mixer. I also got several other things out of the dumpster at that time - lots of stands, cables, a Kurzweil keyboard, and two Stanton turntables. I already determined that a delay pedal I pulled out worked and just needed a battery, but will this Pioneer mixer work?

    Something you might find helpful. Hold down harmonic, fader start 1 and channel 1 Que buttons then power it up while holding then down. Will start up in diagnostic mode and you can test all switches, buttons, faders and pots.
    Have fun.

      @@TheGuitologist Oh, and you tend to use them when mixing as well since Pioneer don't have a fader style cue for headphones. It's either on or off for the channels, and when cuing (beatmatching and lining up two playing tracks in your headphones) you often need to raise the volume on the track above your actual mix target (that is set with the fader). The gear I prefer can assign cue channels to a crossfader, so I forgot about this little quirk. :)

    Man, I can't say how much I love seeing you save this old gem of a mixer. I have some pretty extensive experience with these things (Pioneer DJM 4-channel mixers), the 800 in particular is a really fascinating and storied piece of gear of the recent past. I remember so distinctly when I started DJing around 12 years ago now, going to a Guitar Center of all places and being recommended the DJM-800 or 900 above literally every other DJ mixer they had in the store, even above some very nice Rane mixers which at that time at least were even a little more expensive than the Pioneer mixers. Regardless I was recounted a story by the guy working there about being at Burning Man sometime in the previous year or 2 prior, where he had witnessed a DJ friend of his basically 'field strip' and clean his DJM-800 of the sand which had infiltrated many parts of it after a long set which took place in part during a sandstorm. Allegedly this other DJ pulled all the knobs and faders off of the mixer, pulled the faceplate, and proceeded to blast out the mixer with a hose before wrapping it in a towel to let it dry. According to the story after being allowed a day or so to drain and dry out, the faceplate, knobs, and faders were reinstalled, the mixer re-powered, and it continued to function as if it had never encountered any sand, or water. I personally can recount a time where I had not a DJM-800, but a DJM-700 (essentially a stripped down version of the 800), become partially soaked in icy, salty snowmelt, at a show during the Spring in Salt Lake City, remembering what I had heard before at the Guitar Center, and this mixer being only slightly wet, I used the hour or so I had before my set that night drying out the mixer, and just like in legend, it too powered up and functioned perfectly for the next hour I played on it, and continued to indefinitely before I sold it to a friend who most recently I'd spoken with, said the mixer was still working just fine. In very recent memory and just before you acquired this DJM-800, I bought a similarly used DJM-800 from an audio engineer friend of mine, he acquired the mixer on my behalf from the then recently defunct Club Bricks or 'In The Venue' in Salt Lake City, also the same place where snowmelt from the patio above had leaked onto my older DJM-700. Like all others I'd seen before it, this DJM-800 had been through some shit, yet had somehow invariable come out, functionally at least, unscathed. The build quality of these mixers are just, second to none, no question about it, the DJM's of the late 2000's in particular, are among the finest pieces of audio equipment ever devised.

    The green glowing "TAP" button is a beat per minute (BPM) counter. It's used for beat matching! The microphone switch that was labeled "1,2, and Talkover" is a selector switch for 1, or 2 proprietary mics (without music), and the "Talkover" is to be able to talk while music is playing.

    • @guitarhoarder5426
      @guitarhoarder5426 3 года назад

      @Dearly Diane NOT sure what you mean, but beat matching is where you're matching the beat of 2 songs... like at a club where one song goes into another one without the beat stopping.

    Nice that you can take things out of dumpsters in your country, since this is seen as an illegal action in Germany for instance (same for food "waste"). I know from other sectors where fully functional, worthy stuff (like doors, windows, carpets, various surfaces) is dumped and goes finally into the waste "recycling" or rather into the waste burning facilities. Such a shame

    I work at guitar center and we would never throw this kind of stuff away. It totally baffles me why other guitar centers do this. We have ways to get around the “destroy at store” policy, we can scratch and dent items and discount them very easily and most of the time people will buy that stuff as long as we tell them what they’re getting into. Like why in the hell would you throw away mic stands?! If they’re slightly broken sell them off for 10 bucks! Not that hard!!!

    Fucking lol, the cd cover's painting is from my local cathedral. Just went to see it last year. Hugo Simberg's Wounded angel. Recommend checking out The garden of death as well.

    Man I never find anything in my GCs dumpster. The manager of the one in San Antonio here is a drunk old pervert that absolutely SUCKS. I love pioneer stuff, I have their “most powerful AVR they ever built”, a VSX-D1S and I fuckin love it.
