Great tutorial! I feel inspired. Love the space design too. I can't wait for the Galaxy Watch that I ordered so I can start designing. One question, how can I test my design to show on the watch? Thank you so much, Tony!
That was a great tutorial thanks so much. Only had trouble with lining up the image to go around the edge of the face. I read someone else had the same problem so worked it out from the answers to that question.
Hello, I'm using Watch Face Studio 1.6.9 with a Samsung Classic 6, but I'm not able to make a connection between them. I have already enabled the smartwatch as a developer but I don't know which options I have to enable in developer mode. I ask for your help, thank you.
Yes you can using "bitmap fonts". Basically, you replace each number 0-9 with a PNG image file. For example you would replace 7 with an image of the word "Seven". Below is a link to an article that explains how. You can also check out a watch face I created doing just what you are asking, axeir.com/pop-art/ developer.samsung.com/galaxy-watch-design/studio/tutorial/dev-bitmap.html
I don't know why, but my samsung watch studio doesn't display anything like this. Mine for some reason looks like some kind of mobile app version with most of the components compacted into an add button and timeline doesnt show on the bottom it only allows me to display it on screen over my view window and only allows me to switch back and forth. It seems like a compact version of the program but that makes no sense cause there was only one download I could have possibly got. Did they change the interface?
Hi! Anyone can help me? I gust want to get my current counts and put it to my watch face to memorase a distances. It's seems easy but, unfortunately not :(
is there a way to get calender data to display on the screen? I mean not just one event, but multiple events so its possible to create a calendar watch face
Love these videos. Quick question: How can you put a steps counter and the temperature feature / tag expression togheter on one watchface ? The programm sais it's not possible, yet so many original watchfaces have it.
@@SamsungDevelopers Do you know if it is planned to add this feature? This is a big thing. Most of the faces are health oriented. I want to start creating more info-related faces.
What’s the dimensions of your index in illustrator and you line the numbers up. So u design in illustrator then send over to phohot shop and save as png.
Yes, I design in Illustrator, copy to Photoshop and save as a PNG with transparent background. The size of the background in Galaxy Watch Studio is 360px. However, I sometimes design at 720px in Illustrator and resize to 360px in Galaxy Watch Studio. Graphics will retain a higher quality look when done so but I don't do this for all graphics because the watch file size will be too big.
Since the rotation of the background is based on a watch hand, the movement speed can only be set to seconds, minutes or hours. As for your question about the 180˚ turn, can you explain further?
@@SamsungDevelopers I set the background on seconds in minute. When I set the end value 120 it moves slower but when it hits 60 it goes in one step to 120 and then it makes the turn again. Did you understood it now.
You are correct, setting the rotation value to 120 will slow the rotation by 50% but at 60 seconds the rotation will reset back to the start position. The only workaround I can think of would be to create a 360px X 360px background that only has imagery in the upper half with the lower half being transparent. Set your "Second in Minute" watch hand motion to sweep (must do this first) then the rotation value to 120. Duplicate the layer and rotate it so that the imagery fills the lower half. This way, both layers will reset back to their original positions, but because they are mirrored at 180˚ the movement will be seamless.
@@SamsungDevelopers You are right and your idea is really good but my background isnt symmetrical so by 60 seconds you can still see a bit switching but less then before. If you dont know the solutiom for this it is not a big deal. Thank you.
is it possible to use an animation, for instance, if we animated the fire on the back of the rocket, is it possible to use that animation while rotating it with the seconds?
I never get this Galaxy Watch Studio working fine, this Software was not able to Connect "all" Watches (my's is a SM-R800), i get blank Dialog-Boxes while retrieving Device Certficates and Author Certificate and so on . . . It's very nice to see working with this Software but you not show the Watch where your Design is running actually.
Thanks for the in depth video. but do you know how to make the days of the week show active on the face. so to have Sun - Sat on the face & then on the correct day of the week have that day be a different colour. Ie: On Sunday, Sun appear red & then on Monday, Mon appear red etc etc. please help
This can be done by creating a PNG for each day of the week using a program like Photoshop or Illustrator and then replacing the default digital clock text with these graphics. Before saving the PNGs, set each color as you like for each day then follow the below steps to import them into Galaxy Watch Studio: • Add a digital clock • In the ICU Format section under Properties click the dropdown menu, go to "More", scroll down and select the Symbol "E". This changes the clock to show the day of the week. • With the digital clock selected, go to the Appearance section and select the radial button for Bitmap Font instead of Truetype Font. This allows you to import graphics for different digital clock components. • Click the Bitmap Font Setting button. • Select the "Other" tab. • Click the circle with a plus symbol for each day, then navigate your hard drive to find the PNG you would like to import. The circle plus symbol are not listed in order so you will have to scroll to find each one. You'll have to play with sizing your PNGs before importing them because you cannot resize once they are placed. You might also want to save the PNGs with a transparent background so that they appear on your watch face without a background.
Great tutorial!! Love it, but how do i get the rotation as per ' space ship'. If i add a watch hand for the seconds the image will only rotate in the center and around his own axis.
Glad you like the tutorial! If you go to the 11:04 point in the video I show how you can just drag the watch hand to a new location. You can also change the pivot point by dragging the crosshair symbol at the exact center of your watch hand or select the watch hand and change the Outer Pivot X and Y values in the Rotation Properties window.
Sorry, I am not clear on what you are asking. If you submit a Developer Support Request at developer.samsung.com/support we can probably help you better.
I noticed that one of the watchfaces that come built in the Gear S3 by default has a stop watch built in it, is it possible to make a stop watch like that in GWS? The watchface in question is Chronograph+ this watchface changes visually while the top watch is in use which is also something I'd want to achieve.
You cannot make a stop watch using GWS, but you can using Tizen Studio. Here is a link for more info, docs.tizen.org/development/sample/web/Watch/Chronograph_Watch
I have an image I want to make as a watch hand with a sweep motion, like you did with the alien, but if I import it as a watch hand it doesn't offer the length (or sweep) function like your example did. How do I get it to do what yours did instead of just turning on the spot? Right now it's just a rotating image, not acting as a 'hand'.
This is probably because the dimensions of your image file are cropped to the exact size of the graphic and it is rotating on the center point of your graphic. There are 2 ways to fix. 1. Import a new "tall" graphic for the watch hand that has a canvas area that is 360 pixels tall. The width can be cropped to the edge of your graphic. Next, imagine that your graphic is going to rotate based on the exact center of the canvas area and position your image accordingly. Make sure there is not a solid background layer and save this image as a PNG with transparency. When you import this "tall" image into GWS, center it on the watch face area and it will rotate around the center position point. 2. Using your original "small" graphic, change the pivot point. Go up to "View" in the menu bar and make sure "Show Pivot" is selected. Next, you can either click and drag the pivot point of your graphic to the exact center of the watch face or change the "Outer Pivot" for both X and Y in the "Rotation Properties" panel to 180. Now your watch hand graphic will rotate around the new pivot point location.
@@SamsungDevelopers thanks for the reply, yeah I went with option 1 and that worked. having not a lot of experience with GWS or making watch faces in general it's a rather steep learning curve, but I got there in the end.
Just one more question and I swear I'll not bug you anymore (for a long time lol) I'm trying to add a "workout" button on one of my watch faces, but It asks for an App ID, how can I find out this ID ? thank you very much.
Great video, thank you very much! I already developed my own watch face because I was not happy with options in galaxy store (thousands of them, I know, but still :)) Currently it is not possible to use both temperature and steps counter on the same watch face, among other conflicts. Do you plan to add this feature soon? I still see a lot of watch faces with both weather and steps info. Do I need to use programming for that? if yes, which one?
Glad you like the video! Health and weather use a different incompatible API. However, I was told that we are working on a solution for Galaxy Watch Studio. Watch faces that do show both health and weather use a companion app with a mobile device or are developed using Tizen Studio to code the app.
We do not offer a place for downloading icons other than what is available within Galaxy Watch Studio. My suggestion would be to search online stock websites and obtain the proper license to use. You could also search/post a question on our forums to see what others are doing. forum.developer.samsung.com/
There are a couple of ways to add shadows. The easiest is to duplicate each watch hand layer in Galaxy Watch Studio. Then change the color to black by reducing the lightness setting in the appearance section, and reducing the opacity setting. If you also change the X and Y position to about 5 pixels off center, the shadow rotation will be more realistic. The second option is to create a set of watch hands that are just the shadow using a program like Photoshop. This will allow you to soften the edge of the shadow by adding a feather or blur. You then will place these graphics as watch hands just like you would for your actual watch hands. Just make sure the shadow layers are below the watch hand layers.
If you are asking about the preview, there are two buttons in the Run window, 12H and 24H. All you have to do is select the 12H button to switch the preview to 12 hour format. However, if you are referring to a digital clock, type hh in the ICU format field instead of HH.
great video. I have created my watch but no matter what i do the studio cannot find my watch to transfer it over. I have tried using a mobile hotspot but nothing happens?

Some of the default samsung watch faces track "calories consumed" from the samsung health app. This doesn't appear as a tag in GWS documentation. Could you do a tutorial or point us in the direction of how to expose tags that aren't pre-built into GWS? thanks.
Samsung pre-installed watch faces directly access platform information that is not public at this time. Such information is not available in a public API (application programming interface). Once the Samsung Health API is fully developed, a public API should be available for use by GWS. I would suggest that you post this as a feature request for Galaxy Watch Studio in the Samsung Developer Forum forum.developer.samsung.com/c/feature-requests/galaxy-watch-designer/33
@@SamsungDevelopers Thanks for the reply. Is it the case that watch faces can be developed as "Native" Tizen apps? I'm an engineer and comfortable with a handful of programming languages so I'd be interested if there were some documentation for that route. I will also add it as a suggested feature because I think a lot of people would probably like to do a tag expression like [calories consumed] - [calories burned] and use that on some sort of red->green gradient or dial.
@@glennclapp2537 Hi Glenn, I am glad you are interested in the program and are interested in finding solutions to create your own apps. As stated in the previous response, some of the data that can be collected by the device's sensors is only available through partnerships with Samsung. So, even if you create a Native app will not be able to access the "calories consumed" from the Samsung health app. Still, if you are interested in taking a look on how to create your own Native apps, you can start here: developer.samsung.com/galaxy-watch-develop/creating-your-first-app/native.html Additionally, if you want to check more information on how to collect data from the sensors you can check docs.tizen.org/application/dotnet/guides/location-sensors/device-sensors/ and docs.tizen.org/iot/api/5.0/tizen-iot-headed/group__CAPI__SYSTEM__SENSOR__MODULE.html Personally I think that your first app it is easier to start with a web App (developer.samsung.com/galaxy-watch-develop/creating-your-first-app/web.html) but that will be up to your preferences and dev background. Have a great day.
I cannot connect my gear S3 frontier to my Mac (Monterey) in order to debug it neither via bluetooth neither via wifi, is there any other way to send my watch faces to the watch?
Hi thanks for you helpful video.. I'm a real amateur but what I want to know is when you made your watch hands you said you made them to size to fit in well how do you do that? And where do you get other designs from?
The watch face area is a 360 x 360 circle. The easiest approach is to create a Photoshop or Illustrator file that is 360 pixels tall and place the base of your vertical watch hand at the exact center, 180 pixels. The width will be determined by how wide your watch hand is. Save your watch hand as a PNG with transparency and when you import it into GWS, all you have to do is center it to the watch face for it to be positioned correctly.
Here are the steps for building a 12/24h watch face: • Click "Digital Clock" in the left sidebar to add to watch face. The default clock is 24h. • Click plus symbol (+) next to the Timeline tab and select 12H/24H from menu to add 12/24h component. • Within the new 12/24h component, right-click in the area to the right of the digital clock name "12 Digitalclock 1", and select "Activate" from the pop-up menu. • Click "Yes" when asked to confirm deleting all frames. • Click once in the newly shaded area under the left-side column titled 12H to select it. • Right-click and select "Hide" from the pop-up menu. You have just created a digital clock that will only show when the user's phone is set to display time in 24H. Next, you are going to create a 12H digital clock • Add a second digital clock • Change it to 12H by going to the Properties panel and under Type change the ICU Format to (hh : mm : ss) instead of (HH : mm : ss). • Within the 12/24h component, right-click in the area to the right of the digital clock name "12 Digitalclock 2", and select "Activate" from the pop-up menu. • Click "Yes" when asked to confirm deleting all frames. • Click once in the newly shaded area under the right-side column titled 24H to select it. • Right-click and select "Hide" from the pop-up menu. You have now created both a 12H and 12H digital clock. You can test by going to the Run window, selecting either 12H or 24H, and move the Time slider.
Glad you like! The workspace area of the watch face in Galaxy Watch Studio (GWS) is 360x360 pixels. However, when I am using programs like Photoshop and Illustrator I like to build my graphics at twice the size. After importing them into GWS, I then reduce them by 50%. The graphics will appear a bit more hi-res, but it will also increase the file size of the watch face app. If you place too many hi-res graphics, you can run into functionality issues. For this reason, I only do it for graphics that have intricate details. I would not use a hi-res graphic for the entire background.
You can only use stock images for commercial purposes if you have obtained the proper license that allows you to distribute the artwork. You must confirm with each stock photography company which is the required license.
You can transfer your watch face from GWS by connecting your Galaxy Watch to the same WIFI network that your computer is on. Here is a link to the steps, developer.samsung.com/galaxy-watch-design/studio/tutorial/connect.html
Hi uhhh... I have another question... maybe three. Is it possible to add the 8 moon phases (custom or built in) onto my watch face? And also, is there any way to add weather and health features at the same time without using other software? Edit: Here I am again. How do I change the always on state myself instead of auto generating? Cause that ain't working right. Sorry for the hassle man. I just can't find any tutorial on how to do this online.
Yes it is. Checkout this link to a blog that explains how to use tag expressions to display moon phases, developer.samsung.com/sdp/blog/en-us/2019/07/08/use-tag-expressions-to-create-dynamic-watch-faces. Unfortunately, at this time weather and health features using GWS cannot be used at the same time. As for changing the always-on state (AOD), once you click the button to auto generate the AOD version a duplicate version of your watch face is created with its own timeline and layers. To customize the new AOD version, click the button in the upper right corner that looks like a half moon. (Do not click the little down arrow to the right of the half moon, because this is to remove the AOD version.) Clicking the half moon toggles back and forth between your real watch face timeline and your AOD timeline. You can tell if you are viewing your AOD timeline if the half moon button turns dark gray. You will also see the current on pixel ratio value displayed in the lower right panel of your watch face. Make sure this number is always green. If it turns red, then you have too many bright elements on your watch face.
Nice tutorial , learn quite a bit ! .i just select the image is want to have a png so you can see its dimentions in the top, make a new file in AI in the size of the image. make shore there in the right position and them just export and select Png, this way you don't need PS. same result just a different approach.
Hi Tony - Of all things I was just designing a space watch for myself. I borrowed your idea of changing my bkgrnd to be a watch hand so it can rotate. But I wanted to add an animation of shooting stars sweeping diagonally across that background (from about the 2 o'clock position to about the 8 o'clock position) continuously but can't figure out that part. I already wrote a script for moon phase images that I imported (fingers crossed that displays a full moon on Monday...). How do I get my shooting star effect? I already saved a shooter streak .png in Ps.
You can import your PNG sequence as an animation and set it to only show during a certain time so that you don't have a constant looping shooting star. First, make sure you have added 1, 2, 3, etc. to your PNG file names. This will make it easier when importing. • Go to GWS and click the Animate button in the side bar. • Find your PNG sequence on your hard drive, select the first image and while holding down the shift button select the last image of your sequence. This will select the full range of your sequence PNGs. Press Open to import it • Double-click the newly created animation layer in your timeline to open the Animation timeline • On the bottom of the timeline you can change Repeat from Forever to On-next-minute so that your animation doesn't constantly repeat. • In the upper right corner of the workspace click the folder icon that is titled the same as your project. This will back you out of the animation window. You can now hit the play button at the bottom of the work space to see your animation in action or hit the play button in the run window.
Thank you! I'll try that. I was able to do something similar to your alien, but with shooting stars. I'll try this approach so not limited to circular movements.
There are many websites online that allow you to download fonts. Just make sure that you download fonts that are free for commercial use or purchase the correct license that allows you to use in the distribution of your watch face. If your question is about how to use your font in a GWS project, follow these steps: • Add a text box to your project by clicking the Text button in the sidebar and selecting "Normal Text" • With the text box selected, go to the Properties column and in the Appearance section click the dropdown titled Sync to Device • Select Add font and navigate your hard drive to your font. Font file type must be .ttf • Now that the font has been added to your project, with the text box still selected, click the Sync to Device dropdown and choose your new font. **Adding fonts does not add them to the overall GWS software. You must add them to each individual project. If you would like to learn how to add bitmap fonts to your GWS project, you can read this tutorial, developer.samsung.com/galaxy-watch-design/studio/tutorial/dev-bitmap.html
@@SamsungDevelopers Awesome! Thank you so much for this! One more question. Do you know of a source where I can get clock hands, images and other elements used in making my own watch face? Like a website or file repository?
Nice Tutorial, helped me a lot. Is it possible to show an Animation with the Batterystatus? I mean at 100%-75% this Animation/Image and at 75%-50% another?
Yes it is. First import your different animations for each battery level. After importing go to the Timeline and press the plus symbol "+" button. Select Battery % to add this component to the Timeline. In the Battery Timeline, click and drag anywhere below the numbers (not the layer names) to select the layers of the animations. You do not need to select the entire width of the timeline, just vertically to select all of the animation layers. Right-click and select "Activate". This will turn on your animations for all levels of the battery. To not show one of the animations during certain levels, click and drag the timeline to select the specific percentage, right-click within the selection, and then click "Hide". Your animation will only appear during the other percentages. You can then test by going to the Run window and changing the value of the battery level.

• In the ICU Format section under Properties click the dropdown menu, go to "More", scroll down and select the Symbol "E".
You might also want to save the PNGs with a transparent background so that they appear on your watch face without a background.
is Galaxy Watch Designer the same as Watch Face Studio???
I noticed, not all languages e.g. Croatian. (v 2.0.0). Bug or feature? That's why I went back to 1.8.1

Thank you for your feedback. Do you know the value of rotation by any chance?
Sorry, I am not clear on what you are asking. If you submit a Developer Support Request at developer.samsung.com/support we can probably help you better.

I noticed that one of the watchfaces that come built in the Gear S3 by default has a stop watch built in it, is it possible to make a stop watch like that in GWS? The watchface in question is Chronograph+ this watchface changes visually while the top watch is in use which is also something I'd want to achieve.
You cannot make a stop watch using GWS, but you can using Tizen Studio. Here is a link for more info, docs.tizen.org/development/sample/web/Watch/Chronograph_Watch

how to download the file of a watch face(from store to pc) and edit a few things as we desired in galaxy studio
It is not possible to download watch faces from Galaxy Store and edit in Galaxy Watch Studio.
Is there a way to get a face to interact with the bezel?
No. Bezel is not one of the features you can control with Galaxy Watch Studio.
@@SamsungDevelopers If i wanted to would i have to create an app?
I would suggest searching and posting your question in the forum, forum.developer.samsung.com/
Thank you so much for the owesome tutorial, I've been using watchmaker and it's bit hard on small screen.
I would suggest posting your question in our Galaxy Watch Studio forum.

Great video, thank you very much! I already developed my own watch face because I was not happy with options in galaxy store (thousands of them, I know, but still :))
Currently it is not possible to use both temperature and steps counter on the same watch face, among other conflicts.
I know nothing about, programming, or computers really. Is there a place to download these pre-made icons, such as the step counter, and weather?
We do not offer a place for downloading icons other than what is available within Galaxy Watch Studio. My suggestion would be to search online stock websites and obtain the proper license to use. You could also search/post a question on our forums to see what others are doing.

how do i add shadows to my watch hands? I know there is a guide on your website but a video would really help
Dose it not work on watch 4 and above
how do you put it on 12 hour format its not working for me
If you are asking about the preview, there are two buttons in the Run window, 12H and 24H. All you have to do is select the 12H button to switch the preview to 12 hour format. However, if you are referring to a digital clock, type hh in the ICU format field instead of HH.

Such a shame that CCW sweep motion has been removed in Watch Face studio now :(
Some of the default samsung watch faces track "calories consumed" from the samsung health app.
Still, if you are interested in taking a look on how to create your own Native apps, you can start here: developer.samsung.com/galaxy-watch-develop/creating-your-first-app/native.html
Additionally, if you want to check more information on how to collect data from the sensors you can check docs.tizen.org/application/dotnet/guides/location-sensors/device-sensors/ and docs.tizen.org/iot/api/5.0/tizen-iot-headed/group__CAPI__SYSTEM__SENSOR__MODULE.html
Personally I think that your first app it is easier to start with a web App (developer.samsung.com/galaxy-watch-develop/creating-your-first-app/web.html) but that will be up to your preferences and dev background.
Have a great day.
I cannot connect my gear S3 frontier to my Mac (Monterey) in order to debug it neither via bluetooth neither via wifi, is there any other way to send my watch faces to the watch?
I would recommend posting your question in the Galaxy Watch Studio forum, forum.developer.samsung.com/c/galaxy-watch-designer/27
How to make 12/24h clock in one watchface?
Here are the steps for building a 12/24h watch face:
• Click "Digital Clock" in the left sidebar to add to watch face.
Next, you are going to create a 12H digital clock
• Add a second digital clock
• Change it to 12H by going to the Properties panel and under Type change the ICU Format to (hh : mm : ss) instead of (HH : mm : ss).
This is super helpful thank you. What resolution/canvas size did you use for this?

You must confirm with each stock photography company which is the required license.
whats the easiest way to get it then onto the watch ?

@@SamsungDevelopers thank you! Oh I figured out the AOD myself, so forget about that one.

Is this the easy way to design your own apps?
Press Open to import it
• Double-click the newly created animation layer in your timeline to open the Animation timeline
• On the bottom of the timeline you can change Repeat from Forever to On-next-minute so that your animation doesn't constantly repeat.
I'll try this approach so not limited to circular movements.
where do I download new fonts?
There are many websites online that allow you to download fonts. Just make sure that you download fonts that are free for commercial use or purchase the correct license that allows you to use in the distribution of your watch face.
If your question is about how to use your font in a GWS project, follow these steps:
• Add a text box to your project by clicking the Text button in the sidebar and selecting "Normal Text"
• With the text box selected, go to the Properties column and in the Appearance section click the dropdown titled Sync to Device
• Select Add font and navigate your hard drive to your font. Font file type must be .ttf
• Now that the font has been added to your project, with the text box still selected, click the Sync to Device dropdown and choose your new font.
