Lol, don't mind my cup of tea.

Make her spot the difference between King Diamond and Merciful Fate.
Welcome Home Grandma.
King has always surrounded himself with top-notch musicians to support his incredible vocals.
It's more awesome when you realize King Diamond is almost 64 years old.
59 at the time of this video, but still crazy
I was going to make a similar comment, he is doing this decades past most singers prime
Also had open heart surgery, which I can personally attest, fucks you up!
DUg Pinnick of King's X is about to turn 69, and he's still going strong 😮
@@haakonash Correct
The different voices represent different characters in each song - King Diamond tells stories with his lyrics. He is an acquired taste, but a master of his craft!
What I love is that King is a real Satanist unlike all the fakes in metal. Just sad his wife has to do most of the vocals now
@@robertpreston2220 his wife helps with his falsetto parts but not all of it.
That is the best description i heard of king diamond
The guitars are phenomenal.
@@robertpreston2220 he's a philosophical Levayan Satanist, not a gnostic Satanist. It's a minor detail, but important nonetheless.
One thing people never guess is this mans age. He was 59 years old when this was recorded. He had triple bypass surgery approx 5 years earlier. The man is incredible for just this alone. I've been a fan of his since the early 80's when I first heard Mercyful Fate, and have been a fan ever since. Long live the King!
He sounded terrible 4 years before this (a year after his surgery) at Metallica's 30th anniversary show in late 2011.
@@Danimal77 Yea, if I remember that correctly King himself even mentioned this. It took him awhile to get his voice back after the surgery.
That part at 7:50 wasn't in the song. They had to rush him backstage and check him.
He also quit smoking, which he did pretty hard n heavy in the day.
Amazing what can be achieved by kicking (or better yet, avoiding in the first place) to godforsaken cancer sticks.
Peter, what are you talking about? The gasps and groans ARE at the end of Sleepless Nights - it's what takes the song to a fade-out (on the studio album).
He didn't suffer any health issues or anything during this performance - he was acting, playing the roles of the characters in his songs, as he always does.
If he did have any issues, it was timed hella well to fit with the way the song ends.
King Diamond is one of a kind. He sings as characters. Hence the jumping around
What I love is that King is a real Satanist unlike all the fakes in metal. Just sad his wife has to do most of the vocals now
Great point! It's an important aspect to understand and fully appreciate his genius. That's what drew me to him as a 14 year old in the early 80's. he is quite literally acting out all of the characters in macabre horror story...live. Who else could possibly compare?
@@robertpreston2220 does she? i don't think she does. we'll see in 2020 at mercyful fate concert.
@@robertpreston2220 but.. king has said he doesn't Believe in anything religious
@@ggegasdg1329 of course he has, he has never ever been religious. If he was suddenly religious that would shock the world and make everything he has said and sang about all these years be lies! I mean damn he has been a satanist since 1980 i cant see him suddenly becoming religious and not be a satanist anymore.
when she compliments his voice, we blush. It feels like she is complimenting us for having good taste.
I think the King is more well known now than he has ever been. As a huge fan going back to the mid 80's , I am glad to see him get the recognition that he truly deserves for his genius.
Beyond King's insane vocal ability...the man knew how to surround himself with the most incredibly talented musicianship. Both his solo act and Mercyful Fate fire on all cylinders.
One of my favorite bands when I was a teenager. Abigail, Them and Conspiracy are easilly the best concept album ghost stories ever made! Thank you Beth.
I grew up with "Them"
I think the eye is the best
Very glad to see and hear all this and read all these comments. Fan since 1989 !
I still sing a long today, my kids think King does a better job.
shit Conspiracy is a work of art
What I love about King Diamond is amazing music, amazing vocal and that one record is telling one story where each song is it's own chapter.
Best thing we danes ever made. Hail to the King
Well, you also made the Queen. Floor Jansen. Guess you guys win all around!
@@mattj1871 She's dutch, not danish
Hahaha, watching Beth drink in that first sip of King Diamond may be my favorite moment on this channel so far. She's stunned! Hahaha...
The look on your face when you hear him is priceless.
Yet another band in my CD collection.
Only LPs counts 😛
I think that is the face everyone makes the first time they hear King Diamond sing.
Stay heavy!!
We’re turning Beth into a metahead, conversion almost completed btw hehe
what about tate in his prime? Or Kiske?
I was thinking this too
To complete it she most react to Death or Emperor.
Delain124 Satyricon maybe?
No one even compares to King when it comes to falsetto vocals.
Sasfoot What about The Bee Gees 🤔
Einar Solberg
Rob Halford
Ripper Owens
3 inches of blood
"He seems like sort of a vampire" - Makes me think of seeing videos and photos of King in 1986 when he was wearing an actual cape! haha
Yes, and the bat wing makeup around his eyes.
LOL, at the 2015 show I bought a KD long sleeve shirt that had bats on the sleeve!
Reminds me of listening to music in my bedroom circa 1988...Abigail and Them were classics :)
The King is a really good guy, from what I hear. His rules for the band/staff when touring is no groupies backstage, etc. His theatrics are amazing! And the neoclassical riffs from the guitarist, Andy Laroque, are second to none. The band is telling a story on the concept albums, so depending on what you listen to you, you're only hearing part of a tale. It's like picking up a book and starting at chapter 32.
What I love is that King is a real Satanist unlike all the fakes in metal. Just sad his wife has to do most of the vocals now
King Diamond is one of a kind, an absolute legend. Not only because of his singing, but he was also instrumental in creating several genres of metal, including thrash and black metal. Merciful Fate was a deep influence on the entire scene and many bands emerging in the 80s, including Metallica.
He didn't create any genres at all. He may have been an influence to black metal for his stage presence, but musically, black metal and King Diamond's music are eons apart. He may have been an influence for thrash, but so was Iron Maiden, Raven, Saxon, Diamond Head and so on. What makes these bands alike? They all played a form of traditional heavy metal. And this is what King Diamond with both Mercyful Fate and solo band is. 80s heavy metal with a bit of prog in his solo albums.
He wasn't alone in creating those genres obviously, but he's often cited as a major influence. Being an influence and actually playing the thing isn't the same thing (though there's certainly thrash elements in King Diamond, a lot more than in eg Iron Maiden). Also keep in mind that black metal is a broad category, eg Venom and Bathory sound very different, with Venom sounding very soft by comparison, more like proto black metal, but their influence is undeniable.
”Mercyful Fate were a part of the first wave of black metal, along with other groups, such as Venom, Bathory and Hellhammer.[9] Many of these groups helped establish the style upon which future black metal artists would later build.”
en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metal:_A_Headbanger%27s_Journey
@@xyhmo Just that Venom is not black metal either. They played a heavier version of traditional heavy metal, but not black metal. You can probably link them more with the birth of thrash than of black metal. They named it, but they did not define it. Also, Bathory in its early stage (first 2 albums) copied Venom. The closest thing to black metal in the 80s was Bathory's 3rd album (when they ditched their Venom diapers). That one can be somewhat labeled as early black metal. But the rest of the so called influential bands to black metal have less to do with music than with stage antics, presence, clothing, make-up and maybe lyrics.
Actually even in terms of thrash King Diamond's music doesn't come even close to what defined thrash as a standalone genre. I can understand them being an influence, as thrash did not fall from the sky, but the music his bands play is rooted in good ol 80's heavy metal.
@@Kalimdor199Menegroth I would disagree with ya comment about venom/king diamond not being influential to black metal. it might not be the music as such, but the lyrical themes are what make the bands major influencers on later black metal. Venom were part of nwobhm and were incredibly dark in lyrical content compared to their peers, thus making them along with king diamond cited by many black metal artist as having a influence on what they created. In terms of instrumetation/song structure they both influenced thrash/speed metal. This being more true for Mercyful fate. I will agree with @xhymo with the fwbm comment too. we can say that they were first wave looking back, however at the time they would have just been really heavy metal haha!
"...What makes them THEM!" \m/
I see what you did there.
Grandma, who are THEY?
@@JohnGhost Nevermind you dirty little brat!
Well-played.
Well, we made a deal under the starry night - rule #1 never talk about "THEM".
Thanks for showing some love to the King! Master metal singer, storyteller, and showman. One of my favorite musicians.
What I love is that King is a real Satanist unlike all the fakes in metal. Just sad his wife has to do most of the vocals now
Not that he needs it but I love when vocal coaches validate his incredible talent
King Diamond has been around forever, puts on a fantastic show, and sincerely appreciates his fans, a wonderful thing! I had the chance to see him live back in the earlier 00s and it was a great show with a top drawer backing band and intensely theatrical presentation that most bands/artists wouldn't dare to essay, these days, for whatever reason. He's the King in more ways than one!
King Diamond is one of if not the best vocalist in Metal. Such a badass dude!
King uses the different voices to convey different characters. His music is story heavy. He uses the falsetto voice for the women and children characters, the speaking voice for men, and the growls for the ghosts,...
I'd like to take this moment to thank my big brother Stephen for introducing me to the King.
King diamond is amazing live when I saw him in london a few years ago he blew me away. I was amazed after a heart attack his voice was still on point what a legend glad you finally covered him 😁🤘
anyone else loving the metal reactions?? i think more vocal coaches should react to them. patiently waiting for a Blind Guardian reaction
Crazy thing about good ol' King Diamond is that he still sings this well at 63 years old, and having an open heart surgery, and surviving. Still sounds great! Man knows how to sing and put on a show, despite the odds being stacked against him. What a legend.
My second favorite musical act right behind Iron Maiden. Abigail is one of the best heavy metal records ever written, without a doubt.
We need to see her reaction to Abigail from king diamond 😁
Yes, I'm sure there is a better song for reactions, but I'll have to lead through my collection and figure out which would be best. This wasn't even his highest or lowest, though that could also be due to it being live.
Oh yes, and Beth, Kind Diamond IS a mythical creature ❤
King Diamond ROCKS! His live shows are pure magic! Metal for life! 🤘🏼😎

so happy you have entered the King Diamond rabbit hole...
Mr. Diamond.. the TRUE King of Denmark! :)
King of metal. King of music.
Long Life The King \m/
King is fantastic. Truly one of a kind! I love watching peoples reactions when they hear him for the first time. thank you for sharing your experience with us!
I love when he transitions from an airy falsetto to a gutteral growl and back. I saw King Diamond and Mercyful Fate several times in the 1990s and... What an amazing performer.
It's incredible how he can still sound so good. It's a testament to the fact that he clearly learned technique.
This man is a true legend in Heavy Metal!
You either love King or you hate King, but you can't deny he and his band are talented. He sounds EXACTLY like he did when Abigail was released in 1987. He smoked like 3 packs a day for years too until he gave them up a while back. The King is back! He uses the different voices to play various characters in his albums. Shout out to Mr. LaRoque too!
Wow I'm floored. Beth reacted to King Diamond. She not only explains his vocals but she ALSO points out the theatrics of it all. Someone from outside the metal genre who actually "gets it". This is truly awesome. Thank u Beth!
King Diamond is a vocal monster. His range is nuts.
His solo stuff is great, but i LOVE his old band, Merciful Fate. Check them out.
I have been a huge fan of King Diamond/Mercyful Fate since the mid 80s and this makes me SOOOO happy to see you finally react to some King! Guy is slaying it for a guy thats in his 60s and once smoking like 2 packs a day. I think he has gotten better with age. So happy to see this!
Throat cancer? I knew of the heart attack. When did the throat cancer happen?
This song always gives me the chills! i looooveee king diamond!!
King Diamond is incredible live! I saw him a few years ago. And your are right you really get pulled in and taken with the music to another place. Best show I’ve ever seen!
Beth, you should really take some of your time to watch this entire live show - 'King Diamond Live at the Fillmore'. King Diamond live is VERY theatrical, and the sound quality is great. I actually think you will enjoy it - alot. :)
Yes, that live show is great! They perform the entire Abigail album the last half of the concert. King Diamond uses different voices in the songs to play the each character in the story, which takes the whole show to another level.
Listen to "Don't break the Oath ". I believe KD said they recorded it in like 11 days.
Each album tells a story, it's really amazing to sit and listen to each one from beginning to end, King Diamond is one of my all time favorite and I'm absolutely psyched you are reacting to the King!
King Diamond is my all time idol. I'm glad he's getting the props he deserves. Long Live The King!
If you enjoyed that type of vocals, you should check out Simen Hestnæs aka ICS Vortex. He sang in multiple bands including Borknagar, Arcturus and Dimmu Borgir. I think hes at his best in Arcturus , the record Sideshow Symphonies.
He's a legend, a one-man black metal opera.
Just that this is no black metal. This is traditional heavy metal with a prog tweak.
This is not black metal
for the FS last time - Black Metal is not only about chainsaw gutsfu** guitars or goat croaking or even blast-for-satan hyperspeed drumming. BM is a higher concept that applies to multiple exressions. So MF and KD, to me, ARE BM. mR Vaughan, your description is highly accurate, very well said.
@@jocksilver7 Ok, but this is still not black metal. It is traditional heavy metal. :) Black metal is a musical genre. Associating it with anything else other than music is a travesty.
So sad to see the misguided edgy teens saying this isn't black metal. Do you even know what BLACK metal means? Apparently Just because it isn't from norway and recorded with fucking headphonesn it can't be considered black metal.
There's first wave, second wave, and ofc Norwegian black metal.
Oblivious fucks.
I'm so happy this video popped up in my recommendations. Your reactions were so entertaining, especially the moment he first began to sing; that look of delightful surprise. You have a new subscriber right here!
Thank you SO much! King diamond (both times I saw them) were the best band I've seen live. I've been to many concerts...so glad you got to analyze their greatness :)
King Diamond is definitely the Bela Legusi of METAL
That's actually a great comparison haha xD
@@neonspec Thank you

Welcome to the secret realm of the true King. I enjoyed seeing your first reactions to this operatic monster. He is far and away the most dominant and impressive voice in all of Heavy Metal and it's nice to see someone from the "outside" realize that a bit in real time. Thanks for posting and long live the King!
Conspiracy is a legendary album..30 years of listening, never got bored of it. Classic. King 4 Life!
One word, only one - K I N G.
No need for any other words and/or explanations. Unrivalled Master of the vocal(s).
Hail to the King, wearing a Mercyful Fate t shirt right now.
Just put mine into washing machine.
Love the content, King Diamond/Mercyful Fate has always been one of my favorite groups ever since I can remember, (went so far as to tattoo King Diamond in his corpse paint). There is no better storyteller in metal.
Excellent reaction Beth. So wonderful to see a female who can appreciate King Diamond's voice and music as well. I started listening to King Diamond a little over 20 years ago on his original band Mercyful Fate on cassette. I have since collected those and his solo stuff on CD. I was never a big fan of his voice, but the music itself is pretty damn groovy as you could see there. But recently, I've gained a new appreciation of his voice thru these reaction channels and plan on transferring my CDs to my truck to listen to in the near future.
I was always judged by people because I love King Diamond. "You call this singing?" "What the hell is this?", why can't a woman love metal, and why does everything always have to me mainstream??
So to all of you here who think that you have to love the same like the most people..you don't!
I always knew I have a good music taste, that's all 😄🖤
I love how you love Kings voice as well!
🤘 Thanks for such a great video!
Abigail, you're not the only one being looked at like a bit unusual. We played Conspiracy on a huge boom box in our off time in highschool... the religious freaks shun us like we were demon possessed and some tried to have us forcibly exorcised 😈 😂😂

Great reaction Beth! I love that you don't care about genres and you try everything. Man I remember listening to the album Abigail for the first time. I was floored by King Diamond's singing different personas and the musicianship was unbelievable too.

The best storyteller and performer in all of Rock music ever. So very underrated rated and under appreciated.
Lovely reaction!!! Super enjoyed this one.
The reason it has 80s vibe is because it's a 80s song
King Diamond and his earlier band Mercyful Fate has always been theatrical. It was satanic shock rock and he transitioned into doing more ghost stories, horror type of stuff. I'm glad you appreciate the performance aspect of their music.
What I love is that King is a real Satanist unlike all the fakes in metal and that he sings about his satanism. Just sad his wife has to do most of the vocals now
Beth you never disappoint with your expressions and it's awesome that rock and metal music seem to surprise you so much. Stay awesome!!

I love that Beth is reacting to the mighty King! My only gripe is her being a vocal coach, shouldn't she recognize that King is using a falsetto ? That is his specialty with his legendary voice
Every time she says "head voice," that's more or less what she means.
@@benduffy6219 I get that but I don't know I'm used to his voice being described as a Falsetto
@@jimjam6710 It is falsetto but the placement is in his head register. Professionally it is called a "reinforced falsetto". Falsetto can also be used in the chest register as well but it is predominately known for being used in the head register. Falsetto is just a technique, not a range or voice register. Another way of being able to hit higher notes that are beyond your actual vocal range. It is also called counter tenoring in the opera realm and most opera counter tenors are baritone singers (like King Diamond). The difference between using falsetto (in head register) and singing in a pure mixed or chest supported head tone is the fact that when singing in falsetto the vocal folds are still loose and vibrate against each other allowing air to escape. Making falsetto typically airy sounding and in most cases (depending on the singer) weaker sounding compared to head voice that is supported by the chest since the vocal folds are completely closed off and no air is escaping. Hope this clears things up. Im no vocal coach but i am vocally trained
I've been waiting for this one. I love king diamond!
It’s amazing live!!!!! Watch more king
Vocal coach reacts to Helloween (Michael Kiske) "Twilight of the Gods" live Hell on Wheels. If you would compare and contrast his technique with Queenryque's Geoff Tate's technique and your thoughts on why Kiske's has maintained his voice while Tate's has deteriorated.
I think it all boils down to that Kiske takes his singing very seriously..doesn't have any bad habits and is always keeping his voice in shape, he is also aware of what his fans enjoy about his singing and he's trying to be able to do as much of that as he can. Tate let himself go years ago and even as far back as the Mindcrime days he was struggling with songs live that even just 1 or 2 years before that were effortless for him. Tate loves his booze (from what i've seen over the years) and is rumored to be a smoker too so that can't be too good when you're trying to maintain that higher head voice register and keeping it clean and strong and effortless.. Plus he really just doesn't give a shit about that higher range
@@screamsfromthegrave3324 thanks for the info. I got curious because another vocal coach commented that the technique Tate uses to hit his higher notes will eventually lead to voice decline. I got curious if Kiske uses the same technique since he hasn't lost his.
