This problem occurs when the vehicle is parked for a long time, you saved me some money here. I used WD40 and now it is not getting stuck anymore. Thanks for the video,
I had to replace the same part plus many other steering components bushings and tie rod ends so on my mechanic is low cost still costed me $1250 would of been twice that at dealer, these cars are tanks and parts are pretty cheap love my vic. TAKE THE COP PARTS OF POSERS LOL!!!!!!
Thank you so much. You just solved my problem. I couldn't find out what was wrong. My car was sitting in storage for the winter. Had the same problem as you. All l had handy was WD- 40, but it worked. I was so nervous because l didn't want an expensive repair. Thanks again. What an easy fix.
Just picked up a 2000 P71 SAP today and this is the problem it has. I will be looking into this tomorrow. My first thought was rack and pinion but I’m glad I found this!!!!
I have a 2004 CV & this JUST started happening to me. You are a life saver. Thanks for sharing. I have not tried the 2000 RPM test for steering pump but noticed mine was rusting. So I will grease it till I hit the Zone or where ever is cheaper to replace it. Thanks again!
😂I went thru the same steps. Fluid, pump, lower AND upper power steering shafts! You can spray them for a temporary fix, but they'll continue to freeze up, causing the tightness in the steering. Nice Car! I have an all white 05 & a B&W 09. BEST cars I've ever had! God bless!
I was just talking to my brother about this. Whenever I'd make a sharp right/left, power steering didn't straight the car out after the turn, would have to manually turn the wheel, thought I was crazy. Gonna try lubing it up next time I get it on stands. If that's not gonna work, gonna do as ya did and just replace it. Thanks man!
I'm buying an 07 P71 Interceptor this week and I noticed the wheel being difficult to turn at times and the guy selling it said it's a sensor in the cars computer that things it's going into "pursuit" and it takes the power steering away to prevent over correcting at high speeds. Sounded cool but will check the shaft to see what it looks like.
Sprayed the WD40 on the shaft and it broke loose after that. Drives like I would expect it to now. Will have to be replaced but at least that's a patch fix
@@jessecarter147There is a solenoid valve thing on the steering rack itself, and I wondered if that could be the problem, but it is likely the intermediate shaft, just like in the video and what you discovered when spraying wd40 on it.
Did lots of those cars when I worked at Ford. Lower and upper steering shafts. Also the blue bearing in the bottom of the steering column can move out. Might need bearing retainer and shafts.. recall...
man that was good that peice is called steering shaft universal couple and in all the 39 years of doing wheel alignments never come that that vehicle must have sat in a lake for years the rust those joints out good catch!!!
Thanks for the video. My brother and I could not figure that out. I never heard of the issue. We thought steering filter or something plugged because of the fluid in the reservoir churns not bubbles, but looks like it is churning. Thanks again I will replace it. I have 238000 on it. Bought something else, now going to sell the Vic.
I bought a 2014 Dodge Journey. Never owned an SUV before, never looked to buy one. I moved back up to Michigan to help my parents, and wanted something 4 wheel drive. The prices were higher then I wanted to pay and this was a good deal for a AWD. I wanted to get something not to high and not to low so my parent could get in and out also. I do not know anything about an AWD, and I find that when I ask people they do not know either. Questions like, will I know when it kicks in? Does the drive shaft to the rear unit always spins? Is there u joints on the drive shaft like the old rear wheel drives that need replaced once in awhile? I like to know my vehicle.
Hey man thanks for you're video, you dont no how i was going nuts trying to figure out this issue on my 02 grand marquis with 182,000k had the power steering box replaced as suggested by a so called suspension shop with no luck. i will try the silicon spray see what it does then eventually replace the lower steering shaft.
Alot of the problems with the rack and pinion were on the early 03 models becasuse thats when they switched over to the new rack system. Most of them failed early like 10k miles, so I thought maybe I had some type of steering rack issue but it wasnt thank god. People just replace things without hesisation lol.
I had this steering shaft replaced too on my car, but the problem reappeared a few weeks later. The steering wheel would stick, then I had to use some force to turn it until finally something happened and now the steering wheel turns 360 degrees and the front tires on the car cannot be turned anymore. I dont know what happened.
I force turned my 05 Grand Marquis, and the steering wheel turned more than it should like it stripped a gear ⚙️ or something. Now the steering wheel is crooked. I need to know what happened.
Boy am i glad i found your video my 07 town car has the same problem lol its probably the reason my tires are wearing so fast because when i correct them manually when turning my car jolts
Thanks for this post! I deep lubed mine, and the problem is solved for now. Sure was easy to address, without having to spend the money or time for a major repair.

Nice ride man, been having this issue out of my 03 p71 for quite some time now, been spraying it with pb blaster and white lithium as well but needs to be replaced before it fails completely and causes an accident....if you don't mind me asking, how does it disconnect from the upper shaft? I've replaced the rack on my dads 04 so I know how to remove it from steering box, but wondered how it comes apart from the upper shaft looks like it's pressed in it....also where did you find the best deal? I'm seeing it on rockauto for a little over $150, kinda steep lol thanks man
I believe theres a recall on the shaft call the dealership and see if theyll warranty it thats what I plan on doing. But the upper shaft was 150 when I asked how much it would cost to buy
Thanks for the reply man, unfortunately the recall is only for 05 and newer, I've tried to get them to do it for my 03 but no luck, I believe my issue is the lower shaft because when I soak it the problem goes away, I found the part on JCWhitney for $50, waiting on it to ship now, just not sure how easy the shaft comes apart might have to remove entire thing from car just to seperate it....
Yes but depending on how many miles, what it was used for, etc etc. If your not really car savvy then bring a friend who is or go to a mechanic. They can be the best car ever but they can also be a complete money pit good luck

That's definitely your power steering pump. First make sure you're serpentine belt is not slipping. The reason why you have power steering when you increase the rpms is because your pump spins faster. Your pump probably needs to be changed.
