I had never heard of this artist before, I've been collecting comics since about 1980 or '81, I recognize the other artists that he mentioned but not him. It was truly a privilege and an honor to watch a master at his craft. I learned a lot about layouts and saving time transitioning to actual pencils with a light table. Awesome, thanks for sharing.
Thank you for uploading this. Mr Bennett is one of my favorite artists, with his meticulously crafted artwork. Seeing him at work, telling his process, this is why I love the Internet:)
I wish I could see more videos exactly like this but with different comic book artists! Excellent video, this is what everybody wants to see when it comes to how a comic book page comes to fruition!
I was there when the Brass series went nuclear!! One of the few comics I took everywhere with me to study and lear. Even 16-17 years later the Tech parts in that comic are still insane and still beyond anything of today''s ragamuffin efforts. Which is just nuts. He could so make a killing doing a dvd backed with tips and tricks.
Hmm.. I need a lightbox... Because now that I think of it, the recent troubles I've had could probably be solved by this. I think to stay on the cheaper side I'm going to build one. Thank you for this awesome video!!
omg is that a drafting pencil? My professor yelled at me for using one to refine pencil work much like this. I thought I was doing some secret drawing no-no. Glad to see someone sane using it for the same reasons I do.
I follow him for a long time. He used to draw ''Brass Comics''. he is the best drawer I have ever seen. check ''Brass Comics'' if you can. so, later then he drawed for Transformers Movie. but His ''Brass Comics'' robots are totally different then any robots what did you see before. sorry that nobody knows ''Brass Comics'' actually. he is the best I think :)
I mean, to be fair... This is an extremly easy page, with three huge panels instead of nine small ones, and most importantly... When people talk about doing a page a day, that always, ALWAYS includes the time for the inking (he didn´t ink anything in this video, he leaves that to other people).
Would love to know what kind of paper he uses for the pencil pages and his final ink page. Does anyone know? Or have a suggestion? I am using Bristol now, but does a light board work through that thickness for inking? Thanks, this is a great video!
Diane Rios no, maybe just copy paper or marker paper? You have different types of thickness in those papers. And the thicker ones 200 or 300 grams are very smooth, like Bristol or Canson feeling. You can have them on A3 also. I use these cheap papers that are made for laserprinter or inkjet printer of 300 or 200 grams to practice for inking etc. because they are cheaper then Bristol or Canson paper. The thick ones don’t go very well with a light box. Experiment with cheap copy paper in the variety in their thickness. I have 200grams Canon paper in a 250 sheets package. But watch out that you don’t buy accidentally paper for printing photos on.
Awesome artwork! I noticed him looking off to the side in the beginning, did he use reference pictures or a preliminary thumbnail sketch to base his drawing?
+Ian Hannin nice man....I was actually watching one of my videos and when it was done it kicked me to this...and I came back in my office and was like "what the f@@@??!! I had no idea you'd made this....if you just search here on youtube for "richard friend" you can find my channel it's not under this blasterkid username....awesome stuff man. I am going to watch all 3 of these videos!
+Dumerill100 Richard is pretty comfortable working at any size. But for this particular method with the light box, yes, this is the size he works with.
Yes even professionally comic book artist feel that way, I'm not a pro myself but I've joined periscopes where ppl would ask an artist, and he would say that he feels that way.
His strokes are insanely confident. Comes with a lot of experience.

Q: “How long does it take to draw a page?”
A: “25 years of experience and 53 minutes.”

With bristol board you have to use the lightpad at brightest setting to see page underneath it
Can't wait for when my drawing improves so I can do stuff like this.
Awesome artwork! I noticed him looking off to the side in the beginning, did he use reference pictures or a preliminary thumbnail sketch to base his drawing?
