This song is just perfection. The most underrated and for me the best Iron Maiden song (probably sharing the crown with a couple of others, not more than that).
its the last song of the album... the last song is always a masterpiece with maiden, a long epic. Just look at the 80s album closers, they are all masterpieces and are longer than the other songs
If you're looking for epic later Maiden songs, I would suggest: 'Paschendale,' 'Journeyman,' or 'Dance of Death' from Dance of Death 'The Legacy,' 'The Reincarnation of Benjamin Breeg,' or 'For the Greater Good of God' from A Matter of Life and Death 'The Talisman,' 'The Man Who Would Be King,' or 'When the Wild Wind Blows' from The Final Frontier 'Empire of the Clouds, 'If Eternity Should Fail', 'The Book of Souls,' or 'The Red and the Black' from The Book of Souls
I played bass in a metal band in the 80’s and it was Steve Harris who inspired me take up bass. I learned to play bass by literally playing this album through on cassette, stopping and rewinding every few seconds until I got all the riffs and runs. My first song I learned on bass was ‘Revelations’ from this album and it is perfect for beginner bass players. Give it a go...its worth it!
Great Pick... For Real. No Joke. This song RARELY Gets any reviews. Greatly appreciated. Specially 1st Bruce Bruce....this was my very first hear of Maiden. Life changing..
Very Underrated Song , specially amongst Maiden Album Closers..., Hallowed be Thy Name, Rime of The Ancient Mariner, Alexander the Great get the most recognition( well deserved), but this Masterpiece is right with the others in Absolute Awesomeness Levels!!!, lol..., love this concept.., I would suggest some newer songs, specially Live, like "The Talisman" ( En Vivo) 2011 from The Final Frontier Album and "The Red And The Black" (Live, Book of Souls Live Chapter) from 2016, guys in their 60s playing like mid 20s........, sure Maiden is a different band , from what You guys just heard, but the Greatness/Impossible Energy and Dedication is Eternal with them..., Hard to Find a Band that Brings Their Fans to The Forefront the Way Iron Maiden does..., for more than 40 years.... Cheers!!!!, You Guys are Super Cool!!!!
I think this came before the movie, so it is based on the fantastic book. Also, first album with current drummer Nico McBrain. I really appreciate that when Adrian Smith rejoined, they kept Jers as some bands would let the "new guy" go.
I've bee a Maiden fan for over 30 years now. I remember when this song came out. It blew me away. They have sung it live, though not for many years. Live, it was magic. It's worth looking up because you can find the live performances on RUclips.
Asking someone what their favorite Maiden album is...is comparable to asking a parent who their favorite child is. You can't choose one over the other, right? But i'm gonna say it. Piece of Mind has always been my favorite album.
This was supposed to be called "Dune" like the SF book saga the song is based on, but the Herbert estate didn't grant Maiden the rights to use the name. So, To Tame a Land it became.
I was 12 years old when piece of mind was released, this is the first album I heard then heard number of the beast then iron maiden and killers, my friend brought this cassette tape to school, piece of mind, and said you've gotta listen to this, I've been a fan till this day 2021, their music is so powerful, phenomenal, and the originality is supreme, this is the planets most successful and powerful metal band. Thank you so much.
Great reaction to a great song. If Lex love bass I will suggest to her to listen to BAND-MAID, I think she will love MISA the bassist. By the way they are a group of 5 japanese women playing hard rock. Don't let the costumes fool you, they play hard.
That melody that the bass and guitar were playing just before your pause (at 6:17 on your video) is actually (or based on) part of the main melody of the classical guitar piece Leyenda by Issac Albeniz. If you check out the performance by Segovia on Y.Tube, (look up "Leyenda guitar" ), I'm sure you'll recognize it. I tried to learn it once, but gave up.
Such a treat! Nick, now that you have turned me on to the greatness of this band, I can appreciate these videos much more. When I first heard this (a couple of weeks ago), I don't know how many times I said to myself "oh my God!" while hearing all of these crazy chord progressions, unexpected changes and intense bass lines. From what I have heard so far, this is their best, but I still have a ways to go in exploring their catalog. One thing I love about them is their sound. I have to say their guitar solos are not just all flash, and are not played fast just for the sake of playing fast. They are fitting and classy - written with pure talent instead of just showing off. I'm like a kid in a candy store, can't get enough of this band, after all these years of not really being into their music aside from a few songs. ❤
There's a classic rock song in Australia from 1974 that's almost been forgotten, but it's brilliant. "Evie" performed by Stevie Wright, ex frontman for the Easybeats and written by Vanda and Young. Malcolm Young ACDC and Harry Vanda, Easybeats have guitar solos. It's 11 minutes long in 3 parts and you must listen to the whole song and preferably the original recording.
Love listening to you both. I'm finding that your particular chemistry is very conducive to listening to NEW music. Like a lot of folks, I bop around looking for some of my favorite songs from different reactors, but I don't often stop and listen to songs I never embraced in the past. Your channel is the only one where you'll put up a track I've never heard and say to myself "let's give it a listen and see if WE like it" At some point in the near future you'll have too many subscribers to read all the comments to every reaction, you simply won't have time. So I'm sending my kudos now, so when that day arrives I'll know I chimed in 'back in the day.' Continued good fortune to you both
That is so sweet of you to say! Thank you for your support and we absolutely do have our soft spot for hidden gems! :) We love having you and appreciate you!
Hi, italian fan here. I suggest you to react to 5 of my favourites Iron Maiden songs: 1) The Nomad (Mr. Dave Murray at his pick) 2) Montségur (pretty much underestimated but really strong song) 3) Infinite Dreams ( Steve Harris going mad and brutal on bass, watch the live version) 4) Still Life (again, but pre no prayer, Dave Murray's best composition) 5) The Isle of Avalon (pretty much underestimated too and unheared)
Hey NicknLex.When you decide to listen to more Rush,I would suggest listening to their first hit WORKING MAN.That and another banger ANTHEM .You won't be disappointed!Take care !
I want to mention first: FINALLY!! You guys are the second music reaction to Iron Maiden's "To Tame a Land" around on RUclips. In my point of view on Piece of Mind album, this album highlights Dave Murray's guitar sound and style, just like I believe Somewhere in time is for Adrian Smith. I am a hardcore fan of Iron Maiden from the first album to Seventh Son, No Prayer for the Dying was alright, Fear of the Dark was depressing for me for what Maiden turned to be compared from 7th Son and back. Years went by, Adrian and Bruce are back, Maiden released Brave New World with Rock in Rio 2001 and that was pleasant. Love Maiden, I don't like Janick Gers. Nice reaction!!
I totally agree with you on the ranking of the old Albums; Brave New World and Rock in Rio were great too, but then ? "I shake your Hand" for your comment on Janick Gers, to me he's like the 5th Wheel at the car and his posing is so disturbing. In deutsch we say: da rollen sich einem die Fussnägel auf … hope you find the Right and funny Translation :-)))
Can you guys pleazzz react to Dream Theater's amazing cover of this fantastic song? I would really appreciate it. Petrucci and Rudess just GO OFF on the solo duet parts of this song!!
Excellent song selection! Talking about Steve´s bass and inspiring Lex... A couple of suggestions of songs with excellent musical content from Iron Maiden (there are a lot by the way...); Caught Somewhere in Time, The Duellists... Keep going with your reactions! Bendiciones.
Try some of the newer stuff. Anything will be a good choice. You like some more obscure ones so I can recommend my favorites from each of the post reunion albums: Dream of Mirrors, Pachendale, Lord of Light, the Talisman, the Red and the Black!
Hey Guys, I was a teen in the seventies so really enjoy your reactions to likes of ELP and Alan Parsons, both favorites of mine. I would like to suggest two tracks to you for a first listen. 1: from Styx Equinox album, Born For Adventure, and 2: from before Lyndsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks joined Fleetwood Mac. The Album is titled Buckingham Nicks, the track is Frozen Love. Would love to see your reactions to either of. or both of these tracks
Very interesting to her a Dune-inspired song by Maiden. I wasn't aware they had written this song. Steve Harris's bass drives the song alive very nicely.
I was in HS when Piece Of Mind came out and I learned to play every song in a week. Still my go-to Maiden and To Tame A Land is a fave. Steve Harris is a huge fan of the band NEKTAR. Go back and listen to Remember The Future and Recycled.
Just a little nitpick - the song was inspired by the novel, not the movie. The movie didn't come out until '84, the year after thry released Piece of Mind.
No!! You’re not! I’m sorry if I’ve missed the others; studying hard for my next test in 2 days. We’ll keep it in mind! Honestly not huge Santana fans but we’ll keep an open mind! 🙊 Lots on our list right now but I hear you!! Thanks for your support! - Lex
@@NicknLex I think you will find this different from what you imagine. This is an album of jazz latin rock fusion. I also didn't mean to sound bitter, it's just some frustration.
Kevin, I'd link it here but I'm afraid Yt will yank my comment . . . Look up my Themed playlist; "mvunit3, D U N E" here at Yt, I think you may enjoy it (or find it at my channel). The 2nd section contains songs all about the Desert :). Caravanserai is my favorite Santana album. I have very fond memories of my dad playing the "8-Track" in his 67 Mustang Fastback as a kid.
this song is incredible,i am a great fan of Steve Harris, i stopped listening iron maiden after "somewhere in time" but i learned a lot,i started to play bass at 13 and passing time to play along on their songs,40 years later Steve is still playing to fast for me.:)
My experience with Iron Maiden was much the same. Kind of drifted away from the band after Brave New World (which I really enjoyed). The Book of Souls album totally got me back into the band, though. I actually think it is their best ever. Over the past year, I've really been exploring all my missing Maiden. I'm interested to see your thoughts on this period as well. Favorites for me include, Book of Souls, The Red and the Black, Empire of the Coulds, Dance of Death, When the Wild Wind Blows, The Talisman. Also, Bruce's reboots of the Blaze period are really fun, like The Clansman and Sign of the Cross. Rock in Rio Live is special.
Oh yes, classic maiden it just doesn't get any better than this. You picked an amazing bass player to be inspired by so much to learn from a master. The band I was telling you about is also a fanatic of Iron Maiden especially Miho the bassist of lovebites, she even wrote a song called The Crusade which is a tribute to Iron Maiden's song Ace's High got to check out Lovebites you guys are going to fall in love with them trust me, oh and btw Asami the vocalist is considered the female Bruce Dickinson of today, Steve Harris has met the band and loves them a lot so that alone say's a lot Lovebites "The Crusade" ruclips.net/video/G7-GDlGxWh4/видео.html
I really enjoy your reactions, one great on Mother Russia by Renaissance, I have another request by this band off the album Scheherazade and others Stories. The Song Trip to the fair. It shows a whole new level of their talent. I’m sure you will agree
I saw this concert, this is my high school days, Piece of Mind tour, awesome show. Although Maiden is no longer my thing Paschendale is worth a listen.
there is a legend that says that Iron Maiden talked to the editor of Frank Herbert (author of Dune) to ask for permission to name the song "Dune" and the editor refused saying that Herbert hated Heavy Metal. For that reason this ong was relegated to the end of the album and probably never played live.
It your looking for a good female bass player check tal wilkenfeld.used to play bass for Jeff beck when she was a teenager but now out on her own.Australian i think.
You should have done the Dream Theater cover straight after this as the production of that is awesome in comparison. Also the Maiden United tribute band with Annenke do an AMAZING acoustic cover of it that's really worth checking out :D
We both do this in most videos and I am not distracting her. I always give her cues and she loves the air guitar. She married a guitar player after all and has said herself that she doesn't want me to stop even after people like you have been negative about it. But we know it's not for everyone so if you find it distracting I'm sure you can check out other channels. 🤘
This was the 2nd reason why I was interested in reading Frank Herbert's "DUNE" series (my 1st being a friend who told me about the 1st book, so I was intrigued). The story goes that they wanted to call it Dune, but they wanted permission from Herbert. Unfortunately they had to deal with his agent, and apparently said; "Frank Herbert doesn't like rock bands, particularly heavy rock bands, and especially bands like Iron Maiden" and were forced to change the name" - Wikipedia. :/ Years later, at work at a Pizza Parlor in Diamond Bar Calif., I was listening to a LA AOR/FM station that is no longer around; KMET 94.7 (famous for the Dj "Jim Ladd" whose interviewed the whose who of Rock, and became friends with Rush), on a small segment that played in-between commercials called "Off the Record", the Dj Cynthia Fox had contacted Herbert (I guess because she was a fan, and of Maiden) and had him "listen" to the track, and he was pleasantly surprised :)! I wish someone had a recording of it and put it on Yt, but I've looked every year. This is probably my 3rd favorite Maiden album, but its really my introduction to a _entire album_ of Maiden, as I heard various tracks from the previous albums on KMET and KLOS FM (and KMET's "Metal Shop" which was one of the 1st all metal programs on radio). "Where Eagles Dare" has one of the most classic Drum openings, great song, and I was a HUGE fan of the WWII Adventure Movie as a kid. The whole album is perfection, but I have a special love for WED, "Still Life", "Revelations" and "To Tame a Land". The next album ("Powerslave", my 2nd favorite album) would be my 1st Maiden tour, and then 5 more in the future. Again, I wish I could link an Essay/Soundtrack from my Blog that talks about Dune, and a section of ALL Dune "songs" by various bands on the corresponding playlist, and the 2nd part contain songs about the Desert. If you look up the title; "mvunit3, D U N E", you may be able to find the playlist, but I imagine quite a few songs are deleted, so I have to replace them. - Thanks for another fun reaction! UP THE IRONS! Btw - a few bands have covered "To Tame a Land", including Dream Theater. Also I'm a HUGE fan of the David Lynch film (even if he was taking liberties with the story), and also looking forward to the Denis Villeneuve film. Nick, have you seen the Documentary: "Jodorowsky's Dune"? I HIGHLY recommend you and Lex (and your audience) to watch it. The "Art/Designs" for it are incredible, but I think if it were made _back then,_ it would have been a VERY weird film, especially from Director Alejandro Jodorowsky :p.
Hi! Nick watched that Jodorowsky documentary the other day and said it was awesome! Wants me to watch it so we’ll probably do that in the next few days. You always have so many interesting to say and add to our comments section! Thanks T! :)
NicknLex . . . The music and "Lyrics" of "2 Minutes to Midnight" are excellent! I love how the words are put together (and sadly, the powers that be, are preparing for more of the songs "content"). "Rime of the Ancient Mariner" is their 1st Epic track, "Aces High" is another good one (especially for fans off WWII history and Warbirds). On "Somewhere In Time"; "Caught Somewhere in Time", "Sea of Madness", "Powerslave (be sure to find the version with the "sound effects" intro in-tact)". Again, every song on this album is awesome. The next album "Seventh Son of a Seventh Son" is my fave album, the title-track, and "Moonchild" are my fave songs, but another solid album. Those 2 albums and "Brave New World" are probably their most _Proggy_ albums. As a "Crowd Favorite", and its great when the crowd sings along, the gorgeous track; "The Journeyman" off of "Dance of Death" (it has always reminded me of the track by Kansas "The Otherside" on the topic of writing music/being a musician, and the timbre of both tracks).
@@NicknLex . . . awww ^_^. But also - What a coincidence! Yeah its a very interesting (and funny) doc! Yeah, sometimes I talk TOO much :p. But you made my day.

The Sith Lord Lex hath proclaimed
"The bass is strong with this one"
❤❤❤❤, BRUCE IS MY FAVORITE RAPPER...
Hi folks,
Can't wait for the epic songs of Maiden that they wrote after 2000s as @Jason Philip Hay says.
Greetings from Turkey.
BR!
Oh yes, classic maiden it just doesn't get any better than this. You picked an amazing bass player to be inspired by so much to learn from a master. The band I was telling you about is also a fanatic of Iron Maiden especially Miho the bassist of lovebites, she even wrote a song called The Crusade which is a tribute to Iron Maiden's song Ace's High got to check out Lovebites you guys are going to fall in love with them trust me, oh and btw Asami the vocalist is considered the female Bruce Dickinson of today, Steve Harris has met the band and loves them a lot so that alone say's a lot

This should be followe straight after by Sandy Denny - Who Knows (where th time goes)🥺

Great album
It was played live on the World Piece Tour in 1983.
@@jongolsteyn7031 would there be any way to hear it?? if you know pls let me know
@@cbmetal I have a live CD of it. Maybe check you tube.
CHICOS SON BUENA ONDA LES GUSTA ANALIZAR EL ROCK, Y BUEN DIA PARA UDS
Up The Irons!!!!
It's pretty clear they don't care about the lyrics or what the song is about!
It is, isn’t it? And we’ve said that before. On the first listen, music takes priority. Every listen thereafter can be dedicated to lyrics. ;)
22 Acacia Avenue
It your looking for a good female bass player check tal wilkenfeld.used to play bass for Jeff beck when she was a teenager but now out on her own.Australian i think.
This album KICKS ASS
BETTER PUT YOUR SEATBELTS ON FOR THIS ONE MY MUSIC LOVIN BROTHER & SISTER,, LENNY KRAVITZ "ARE YOU GONNA GO MY WAY" (OFFICIAL MUSIC VIDEO)
BUT!!! This is not as EPIC as Rime of The Ancient Mariner! You should listen to it.. ;)
3 years later, try the reincarnation of Benjamin Breeg
You should have done the Dream Theater cover straight after this as the production of that is awesome in comparison. Also the Maiden United tribute band with Annenke do an AMAZING acoustic cover of it that's really worth checking out :D
book not movie song came 1983 movie 1984
Lord of the light a matter of life and death
DUNE. Frank Herbert poo poo'd this song
Stop distracting her throughout the songs dude
We both do this in most videos and I am not distracting her. I always give her cues and she loves the air guitar. She married a guitar player after all and has said herself that she doesn't want me to stop even after people like you have been negative about it. But we know it's not for everyone so if you find it distracting I'm sure you can check out other channels. 🤘
I used to like this album back in the day but now it bores me. This pisses my base player off but I can't help it.
Years later, at work at a Pizza Parlor in Diamond Bar Calif., I was listening to a LA AOR/FM station that is no longer around; KMET 94.7 (famous for the Dj "Jim Ladd" whose interviewed the whose who of Rock, and became friends with Rush), on a small segment that played in-between commercials called "Off the Record", the Dj Cynthia Fox had contacted Herbert (I guess because she was a fan, and of Maiden) and had him "listen" to the track, and he was pleasantly surprised :)!
