I know for sure you'd love Maiden's 'Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner.' A masterclass in atmosphere, emotion and storytelling. "The Duelists" is another stunning example of Maiden's ability to tell stories that are not only dramatic, but also human, immediate and full of paradox and ambiguity. It's both about the futility of a duelists refusal to admit defeat and an ode to the bravery that leads him down his doomed path. Another great one is 'Brave New World'; the song puts you right into the shoes of the so-called "Savage" and the alienation and overwhelmingly loneliness he feels in the 'Brave New World.'

@@luisarreaza4502 In 1986, I drove my buddy to Tower Records in Van Nuys where he bought that album and I taped it. There was a skip in Loneliness that was on my tape. I was in the Army on leave and was getting ready to go overseas to Germany where I could drive my 78 Corolla on the Autobahn. So I set out on a cross country drive from LA to Charleston SC, listening to this tape the entire way.

The drumming of Where Eagles Dare is out of this world, Revelations is a masterpiece and The Trooper is iconic. I recommend Flash of The Blade. It's an amazing maiden song, it's definnitely not their average E minor song XD, some great harmonies and refreshing chord proggressions, and really catchy melodies.
Also, I noticed you referenced the multiple guitars on this one after the solo. You should know, Iron Maiden OWN multiple guitar harmonies, especially if it's in thirds. You can bet each time you see a metal band out there doing dual guitar harmonies that they were influenced by Maiden, you'll win 95% of the time. Not even joking haha

I prefer older Maiden or their more melodic music. A lot of their more recent stuff that gets a bit too heavy can sound a bit of a mess to me.
Maiden were a lot stronger with Martin Birch as their producer, their music had more clarity & melody then. Under Kevin Shirley a lot of their music to me can just sound too heavy & congested. Everybody to their own though.

Another great video Doug, I'm a huge Iron Maiden fan and I recently found your RUclips channel, I've been enjoying all of your content. As for Bruce's highest singing note, I think it's at the end of "where eagle dare", from the "piece of mind" album, where he hits a D5 and then goes to an E5 in full voice, the same note can be heard at the end of "childen of the damned", but I prefer the first one. If we count screaming or falsetto notes I think the highest note is in "gangland" where it goes up to B5, there are also a couple of short highs A in that song.
As for Bruce's highest singing note from the 2000s and 2010s, I think we can find it in "the legacy" where in the chorus he belts a short E5, he can no longer sustain a high note, he mainly restricts to b4.

Grieg wrote a ballet about trolls. Mussorgsky’s “Night on Bald Mountain” is about pagan rituals. Stravinsky’s “Rite of Spring” involves human sacrifice. Camille Saint Saen’s “Danse Macabre” was not only a huge influence on Iron Maiden’s “Dance of Death” but also was considered scandalous when it debuted in the late 1800s with many people thinking that a waltz about dancing skeletons would be a bad influence on the youth of the time.

One of my favourite unsung Maiden songs - thank you!
This whole album has an amazingly murky, articulate quality about it which really makes it stand out in it’s individuality - to me it sounds like a concept album; Seventh Son‘s crooked older cousin.
The mix & tone of the album blends really nicely with the introduction of Nico and shows a marked maturity in song writing after the blistering Number of the Beast. Derek Riggs‘ art work on the gate fold sleeve, just captured it all beautifully and tied it up in a nice bow.
Every time I hear any song on this album I am transported back to my early teens and grabbing my Hondo 2 P bass, desperately trying to learn the bass lines!

There are many stories of theft and loss, etc. but the fact is all you need to know. This album is their Quadraphenia, a masterpiece cover to cover! "To Tame a Land": with a title like that, you'd think it'd be based on the 1955 novel of the same name by Louis L'Amour...but nope.
(Funny enough, it had me thinking of a line from the Star Trek episode "Space Seed", the one featuring the first appearance of Kahn, with his quote, "to tame a world", and quoting Milton's PARADISE LOST...)

    • @pietrayday9915
      @pietrayday9915 3 года назад +1

The band might be fans of Louis L'Amour, though.
Equally tantalizing, their sci-fi themed "Somewhere in Time" album cover painting is absolutely loaded with dozens and dozens of little "Easter egg" references to the band's song titles and favorite authors, movies, and other influences, such as Doctor Who's TARDIS on a street corner and the car from Blade Runner parked near the "Bradbury Towers Hotel" - and just in the background is "L'Amour's Bar and Grill"... alas, that's probably not a reference to the author, either: there's a pub of that name which the band played at a number of times before they were famous, and which they would sometimes sneak back into in disguise so play cover songs under assumed names for fun!
Still, Iron Maiden have surely recorded hundreds of songs at this point inspired by all sorts of literature, so it wouldn't surprise me at all if a Louis L'Amour homage is in their discography somewhere!

Interesting side note about this song: Steve Harris wrote it after reading "Dune" by Frank Herbert. The song was going to be called "Dune" until Mr. Herbert found out about it. Frank Herbert apparently hated rock & roll bands, & he threatened to sue Iron Maiden & stop the Piece Of Mind album from coming out if they released the track with that title. So the song had to re-titled as "To Tame A Land."

Thank you so much for looking at this song! I have always loved this song, bu I had no idea it was based on "Dune". I also have not read the novel, but I saw the movie many years ago (and it's quite the watch - LOOONGGG movie...) and the name of the family you mentioned (Atreides) is pronounced Uh-Tree-Dees. Just for your reference. Again, thanks for listening to this one! Piece of Mind has many great tracks. Maybe next time consider "Flight of Icarus", "Die With Your Boots On" (which, despite the dire title, is about the fabled predictions of Nostradamus), or "The Trooper" (really interesting riffing going on there between the verses). Or my personal favorite, "Quest For Fire", however inaccurate historically. Anything off that record, really.
Edit: If you ever decide to listen to "Revelations", may I suggest the version off of "Live After Death" (or any live recording, I suppose) because they play it somewhat faster than the almost painfully slow studio version on POM. There's nothing wrong with slow - but, well - it's really slow...
