- "My friends, Jackson Browne and Glenn Frey and Don Henley and eventually Warren Zevon, were all part of a group that really loved each other's music. As different as we all were from each other, I think we all had a good partnership." J.D. Souther talks about beginning his career in music and establishing himself as a well-known songwriter.
He sounds like the type of man you could sit and enjoy listening to for hours without interruption or distraction you're only lonely is a lovely song
This man’s voice is like Valium to the soul , and he is still gorgeous❣️❣️❣️❣️❣️
Few people are gifted and intelligent. JD Souther is both. What a singer and what a human being! This man is one of the greatest people of our lifetime.
Underrated in all aspects of the music industry.
I grow up in the 70’s, and I missed hearing this song (You’re Only Lonely) I was in the Air Force at the time. Many years later in my mid 60’s while working at Home Depot I heard it for the first time, on one of their piped in music playlists. It is now one of my all time favorites.
JD Souther. A man who has read every book ever written, such is his intellect.
You're Only Lonely is one of my favorite from the 70s from Great J.D. Souther
An underrated singer, amazing songwriter, and better human being. His "catchy little tune" that was his only big hit, "You're Only Lonely," is one of my all time favorites.
ffhd1clt well it's my favorite song too.
Mine too.
ffhd1clt boy he sure wrote a lot of hits songs for others though. Definitely a great man, music writer and performer. That voice is so soothing.
J.D. Souther was one of the greats. "When Your Only Lonely" was one of the greatest songs ever recorded. No one can sing it like J.D. Souther.
@@JennaP363 I wonder if Roy Orbison ever did a version- he could have done the song justice.
I heard this sing and wished all men could be this way, so romantic & vulnerable.
Amazing voice
You’re only lonely. My favorite. I listened to this song 4-5 times a wk.
Straight up
I listened to it 4-5 times a day when it was released...Now that I am nearing 70 I'm cutting back...only 2 or 3 times a day now.
Everyone has a view of truth…What they don’t have is a beautiful soulful tenor and a falsetto you could cut ice with.
VERY UNDERRATED WRITER SINGER I LOVE HIM STILL..❤😢❤❤❤😢❤
Linda Sang backup for him on this song. He and Linda were a couple, and one of her few Relationships she made public, speaks highly of the type of person he is.
Underrated singer songwriter
Love this guy. Love his voice. He’s also smart and articulate.
JD deserves much, much more respect. Insightful, intelligent. Great guy.
I have been a jazz based/music theory guitar singer song writer my whole life.I am 66 now. I started noticing JD Souther in the Souther Hillman Fury Band. Then when his album "Black Rose" came out I listened to it for about a month! The chord work, arrangements with horns and such have helped me in my own career. JD Souther is a great musician as are his friends mentioned in this video. I have never seen JD South play a live performance but I will! Great musician! I'd give anything if todays music had even a little of the integrity of his material!
I finally got the chance to see him last night. It was more like an unpolished, rough, unrehearsed living room storytelling session than a "concert" and I loved it.
This is still a great introspective song, he stole my heart!
Even though it was really his only hit he performed himself as the star, "You're Only Lonely" really is one of the greatest songs of all time, stunningly beautiful in every way!!
JD is a great singer. You're only the lonely is a beautiful song that I love to play on the guitar.
The "California Sound" also called Country rock was always my favorite.
Thanks J.D. good stuff!
I love all John David souther songs 💕🦋
JD Southeri s one of my favorite artists. He's a great talent and continues to make wondeful music.
Such a talented songwriter and singer! Love him still today! 👍🎶💗☮️♥️. Thank you for all your beautiful words! 👍😊🎶💗
Toujours aussi charmant.
I absolutely love this mans music and talent! Your Only Lonely is one of my favorite songs ever! Love it to no end! I could listen to it over and over and over! ♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗
So underrated....I loved his records...had them all. I also got to open for him at The Coach House a few years back....loved it.
I only wish he'd done more like "You're Only Lonely"
Very intelligent and warm person I like him now more than ever.
Beautiful Song Your only lonely, great voice, Amazing writer and talent.
That way a great time in history. Great songwriter!
One of those rare gems, U have to dig a little and when you find him it's so worth it. His voice is like aloe vera on sunburnt skin ... Ahhhhhh
Thank you, JD. Still spin that album. Appreciate everything you contributed to my growing up.
What a great guy this J'D Souther' is. So good.
Incredible song, incredible person
You’re an amazing talent. The best singer ,song writer from 70’s up to today. We’re lucky to have you. Thankyou👏👏👏👏👏✌✌✌❤❤❤❤🇨🇦
I thought I was familiar with all the music of the 60s and 70s, but amazingly, I discovered this song only in 2020! And I love it. It gives me goosebumps. Thank you JD. What a joy to stumble upon you (so to speak). Love and thanks.
Love this song, feels like a song which came from an Era of the lthe 60 to fifties
I love you every thing you've written and sang
Love this guy and his music; his contribution to country/rock/pop is enormous. I have all his early records plus the two he did with Hillman and Furay. Saw that group live (up close) when they opened for Eagles back in . . . what? '76?
he's just wonderful....thank you mr SOUTHER!and he is here to remind us of how we can still be that caring and courageous.
Really nice information on J.D. Souther and his friends. What a great bunch of musicians. Glad they were all friendly with each other. Nice guy.
Kick-ass man in many ways, as described by many posts here. Thank you JDS!
He talks like he's one of the Eagles. Similar accent, speaking style, cadence. No wonder they got on famously.
Absolutely love his songs and still has those beautiful eyes.
so much great stuff.. THANX jd, eagles, and others who have touched my life thru those years..
Another one of my favorites by JD is the album Black Rose
I loved New Kid in town!
It's hard to fathom that their music has been replaced by this generation with Techno, no tune crap and rap. Zero talent noise. Glad to be old :)
One of my favorite songs, but one of many great songs written by him
Mr. Souther said that he discovered country music "mostly through Linda Ronstadt". How many millions were turned onto country by her? I was one.
He was and prob still is still in love with her. Watch the Ronstadt documentary. I think it’s obvious
I loved his song. It’s hard to believe he’s gone.
He is still alive!!!!
@@patstiff No wonder it was hard for me to believe.
Your only Lonely has Great words....they speak to me!
One of my personal favorite videos is him singing harmony with James Taylor on the song he wrote It Used to be Her Town. I recommend it highly a beautiful song performed by two legends.
I love that song!
I've listened to it a million times , just posted it on FB in remembrance of my sister who adored them both.
I didn't know he wrote that one. Thank you for posting.
love jd he's a real singer of true love and meaning to the words in those song thank you love you and songs
I absolutely love JD’s songs!! How Long has long been one of my very favorites, especially the Long Road Out of Eden album.
One of the greats !!!!!
Too talented & adorable!
Prophetic interview
So handsome .so talented. 3cheers from Atlantic Canada
Great artist
This is the best song ~
New Kid in town is one of my all time favorite songs. Sometimes I like to put on a little Longbranch Penny whistle and free my mind.
Amazing talent. Love him.
A true musicians's musician.
I'm surprised there was no mention of James Taylor, he co-wrote "It Used To Be Her Town" and also sang with him on the hit record.
He said Linda was his biggest influence or the one who turned him on to country rock. Seriously? She is really the only one he gives credit to. Still consults her for musical advice. But yet many of the guys he knew n wrote for n or with r still alive. I think he may have a lil envy problem going on for real. Like he's upset he wasn't as popular as they became. Just weird.
Bill Kurtis I've heard his voice since the 70's
IKR? Almost expecting it to be a murder case and souther was privy to. Lol
🥺I love you ❤️
At first glance, the thumbnail photo for this video looks a lot like Kenny Loggins. Both are responsible for some of the very best songs of the '70s.
And we know who he is singing about!!!! He is awesome!!!
Jd rules!!
Looooove 70's Jackson Brown..not the watered down 80's version so much..
I found him quite believable in the small role he did on the tv show "Thirtysometing" also.
Wonderful human
He’s look good ❤
J.D. Do a live broadcast version of this song bud. It's great.
In my top 3 favorite songs of all time🎤🎶🎸
Awesome respect 👏👍
Great writer.
hermosa cancion, eterna !
I can see why Linda loved him..they made a cute couple
The best song
Dude tears me heart out and calls it a "catchy little tune"
Him live at farmaid is magical
Folk music and other genres have a history of shining a light on injustice, giving hope and optimism when down trodden etc. I'm all for a musician who stands up, sings, and talks about making the world a better place, justice for all, and warning us when we are going backwards in history. White nationalists need not tell these musicians to "shut up and play" after listening to JD, the Eagles, and Springsteen as you are probably missing a lot of the point of the music and message. There's love and understanding in the message of folk-singers, not hate. Look inward and rethink it. You can be good enough yourself. You don't need to put someone else down to be good enough or to do well in your own life.
Forgive me....but I thought a woman was singing this song for quite sometime before I discovered j.d souther...that doesnt diminish his genius though....
love ya boy
an EPIC SONG
Well, yeh, it doesn't have a chorus. But the last verse is not just a repeat of the first. He sings it very differently, so it functions as a chorus.
Would have loved to heard Roy Orbison do that song.
But you are 70's not country but love all the people you mention! And just to let you know You where a very good looking man!
Love ❤️ you J.D
Thru the decades w bill kurtis. Love that show
His only good song??? I always still buy c.d.'s and vinyl because there's always more songs to hear. John Anderson, love him. But if I had not bought his albums, there'd be no "Yellow Creek", or "Momma, looked what followed me home". I don't have any J.D. Souther c.d.'s, but I soon will. Real soon. Heck, I didn't have but one Tom T. Hall or Linda Ronstadt Album, BUT, just one look at one look at one album, and now I own them all. Even Linda's Spanish stuff an Tom's song for children stuff. I'm blessed.
I"ve always believed that J.D. was composing his own little tribute to the late great Roy Orbison when he made "You're Only Lonely."
If he had that as his intention, he did a damn good job of it.
I wonder if J.D. wrote the song You're Only Lonely while eating at Musso and Frank on Hollywood Blvd. I understand he wrote alot of songs there. He was later in the band Souther, Hillman and Furray
I never knew he sang with James Taylor on the song" used to be her town"
He's like Christ. So cool!
Narrated by Bill Kurtis.
