  • "My friends, Jackson Browne and Glenn Frey and Don Henley and eventually Warren Zevon, were all part of a group that really loved each other's music. As different as we all were from each other, I think we all had a good partnership." J.D. Souther talks about beginning his career in music and establishing himself as a well-known songwriter.

I grow up in the 70’s, and I missed hearing this song (You’re Only Lonely) I was in the Air Force at the time. Many years later in my mid 60’s while working at Home Depot I heard it for the first time, on one of their piped in music playlists. It is now one of my all time favorites.

I have been a jazz based/music theory guitar singer song writer my whole life.I am 66 now. I started noticing JD Souther in the Souther Hillman Fury Band. Then when his album "Black Rose" came out I listened to it for about a month! The chord work, arrangements with horns and such have helped me in my own career. JD Souther is a great musician as are his friends mentioned in this video. I have never seen JD South play a live performance but I will! Great musician! I'd give anything if todays music had even a little of the integrity of his material!

He said Linda was his biggest influence or the one who turned him on to country rock. Seriously? She is really the only one he gives credit to. Still consults her for musical advice. But yet many of the guys he knew n wrote for n or with r still alive. I think he may have a lil envy problem going on for real. Like he's upset he wasn't as popular as they became. Just weird.

Folk music and other genres have a history of shining a light on injustice, giving hope and optimism when down trodden etc. I'm all for a musician who stands up, sings, and talks about making the world a better place, justice for all, and warning us when we are going backwards in history. White nationalists need not tell these musicians to "shut up and play" after listening to JD, the Eagles, and Springsteen as you are probably missing a lot of the point of the music and message. There's love and understanding in the message of folk-singers, not hate. Look inward and rethink it. You can be good enough yourself. You don't need to put someone else down to be good enough or to do well in your own life.

But if I had not bought his albums, there'd be no "Yellow Creek", or "Momma, looked what followed me home". I don't have any J.D. Souther c.d.'s, but I soon will. Real soon. Heck, I didn't have but one Tom T. Hall or Linda Ronstadt Album, BUT, just one look at one look at one album, and now I own them all. Even Linda's Spanish stuff an Tom's song for children stuff. I'm blessed.
