I was privileged to see him live in a little bar , very intimate venue , only a 100 or so people in Chicago’s Wrigleville area a while back, was seated in the front row on a folding chair in 2008 , and was able to meet / talk with him afterwards, and he personally signed his double album at the time , If the World was you , truly was one of the amazing talented , singer, songwriters of our time . He was Elected into the singer songwriters Hall of Fame in 2013 , and performed live on stage with the EAGLES this past January on their Long Goodbye tour He released his biggest solo album , Your Only Lonely back in 1979 and it was A #1 Adult Contemporary hit for 5 weeks, Souther told interviewers that Roy Orbison, who had a hit with "Only The Lonely," was a big influence on this song. Said Souther: "I was a little kid when I first heard Roy Orbison, but he was magic. He's the guy that you turned out the lights and listened to his records by yourself - or with a girl - because he was just completely other-worldly. He had sarcastic and adventurous songs and great arrangements, and then that beautiful, almost operatic voice. Beautiful, natural deep echo on it. He is one of half a dozen or so rockabilly musicians that I really loved. When I was in junior high school was the first time I really started listening to that. But then I started playing drums all the time, and I got so fascinated with jazz, I didn't really think much about singing or making rock and roll records for quite a few years. The first song I ever heard called 'Only the Lonely' was this song that Frank Sinatra sang. It's a Johnny Mercer song; it's on a Sinatra album called Songs for Only the Lonely. I love tge way that JD talks about songs themselves as if they were people he cares about-protecting their spines, etc. What a gentleman poet, an imaginer of the good parts of life, the encouragement he gives to live through realities. He emodies what humility looks like.
I think his decision to allow others the privilege of singing his songs eclipsed his own fame. But I don’t think he cared. Like Ronstadt it is always about the integrity of the song

I'm old and don't know much, but any words that come out of JD's mouth in an interview, is like listening to the only real voice of genius. If Michel Angelo had only painted by numbers, then JD would have been the genius behind those numbers.

I just downloaded this entire release. How I missed it until now I don’t know. I knew Don Henley intimately back in the day. He was so kind to me. A very young girl with a knowledge of musicians, songwriters and singers well beyond my years. I met most everyone in the Southern Cali music scene although I doubt very much they remember me 😉. JD and Linda were sometimes a couple but always there for each other. The people I saw come and go on those nights...the backstage warmup harmonies I was privy to...i wouldn’t change a thing about being alive in 74-77. Although I did drive my poor family insane with my lack of high school attendance..it was the 70’s❤️ and I managed to graduate. Don Henley remains a friend to this day. I don’t see him...but he’s got my back

Well, I am so happy that I love the Eagles and looked at the "thank you"-notes and the writers of the Eagles albums and songs. Thats where I met John David Souther´s name the first times. JD Souther is tremendously talented.
Natural History is a fine piece of work, perhaps Souther's best. Unlike many of his peers in the biz, the years have been kind to JD's voice, at least as a vehicle for these songs. He is vocally a better match for them now than when they were first written. The new arrangements add a great deal to several of the cuts. In particular, the piano-driven "Best Of My Love" is elevated from the mildly pleasant dirge of the Eagles version to candidacy as an enduring pop standard. Great!
JD is sounding great in these stripped down acoustic renditions of some truly great songs. I will buy the album - I love his music and his voice. I am pleased that he was prevailed upon to record this album. :-)
Honestly, I realize he wrote so many of the songs the Eagles had hits with and when you hear the same song when someone sings it,to me it's not the same, but I really love the way he sings these songs.Nothing gets lost in his way of representing the music!No wonder so many of his songs became hits!

Before there is a hit song, there is simply a great song, often written by a songwriter that is relatively unknown. Some artists are songwriters themselves but I feel bad for people such as JD Souther not getting the proper recognition they deserve for hits that are wrongly associated to The Eagles, Ronstadt and others.
J D Souther is the real thing. Much like a Sam Shepard, Sam Elliott, or Jeff Bridges. True American artistry with a natural ease and a deep well of understated talent and honesty. I've loved his song writing since SHF and then "Black Rose". I marvel at how his songs hook you with interesting chord progressions and unexpected key changes which, at first, seem to come from out of left field and make you think "well, we're in the weeds here now and how are we going to get back to the original melody", until the resolve. Great singer, "and a rodeo smile". Love this album.
good news for me & anyone who loves j.d...i have always been knocked out by his work, & have performed lots of his first solo stuff, when no one knew...so, i can't wait to hear what he's done. never been dissapointed yet.
So clearly remember when I got Souther, Hillman and Furry album some 45yrs ago (excuse my spelling) now I know where they went. He would have been a great addition to the Eagles.
I just bought two tickets to The Soiled Dove an intimate venue in Denver, Co. on August 21st. Iv'e been to hundreds of concerts and seen most everybody that's any good, but this will be an experience of a lifetime..thank you Mr. Souther.

I Knew His Younger Sister Briefly When She Had One Of His Live Shows From California Live Broadcast To Amarillo College In The Early or Mid 70's . I Also Knew His Father Working Retail At Hasting 's Records In Amarillo . I Finally Had The Honor Of Meeting Him In Person At The Fire Station Recording Studio In San Marcos , Texas In The Mid 8o's . The Roy Orbison Final Concert I Believe He Orchestrated In Honor Of One , If Not His Favorite Influencers & Mentor Mr. Lonely Himself ....R.I.P. Roy !
I'm sure this will be a great album. I will buy it. However, many of these songs J.D. already recorded and not all the songs here were songs done by others. Not sure the reason to redo those, other than to give them a stripped down acoustic version. I am looking forward to an album of new songs - hopefully we won't have to wait as long this time...

Some artists are songwriters themselves but I feel bad for people such as JD Souther not getting the proper recognition they deserve for hits that are wrongly associated to The Eagles, Ronstadt and others.
He got the recognition he wanted. His peers were his number one fans
J D Souther is the real thing. Much like a Sam Shepard, Sam Elliott, or Jeff Bridges. True American artistry with a natural ease and a deep well of understated talent and honesty. I've loved his song writing since SHF and then "Black Rose". I marvel at how his songs hook you with interesting chord progressions and unexpected key changes which, at first, seem to come from out of left field and make you think "well, we're in the weeds here now and how are we going to get back to the original melody", until the resolve. Great singer, "and a rodeo smile". Love this album.

good news for me & anyone who loves j.d...i have always been knocked out by his work, & have performed lots of his first solo stuff, when no one knew...so, i can't wait to hear what he's done. never been dissapointed yet.

So clearly remember when I got Souther, Hillman and Furry album some 45yrs ago (excuse my spelling) now I know where they went. He would have been a great addition to the Eagles.
I just bought two tickets to The Soiled Dove an intimate venue in Denver, Co. on August 21st. Iv'e been to hundreds of concerts and seen most everybody that's any good, but this will be an experience of a lifetime..thank you Mr. Souther.

I Also Knew His Father Working Retail At Hasting 's Records In Amarillo . I Finally Had The Honor Of Meeting Him In Person At The Fire Station Recording Studio In San Marcos , Texas In The Mid 8o's . The Roy Orbison Final Concert I Believe He Orchestrated In Honor Of One , If Not His Favorite Influencers & Mentor Mr. Lonely Himself ....R.I.P. Roy !

I'm sure this will be a great album. I will buy it. However, many of these songs J.D. already recorded and not all the songs here were songs done by others. Not sure the reason to redo those, other than to give them a stripped down acoustic version.
I am looking forward to an album of new songs - hopefully we won't have to wait as long this time...
