  • In this video Todd Schorr discusses his process of creating a painting - from the initial drawing, to the color study, to the laying paint on the canvas. Additionally he talks about using acrylic paints the way one would use oils.
    Todd Schorr: American Surreal is the first mid-career retrospective of the Los Angeles-based artist. Schorr is a leading figure in Southern California's cartoon-based movement, dubbed Pop Surrealism, which embraces low-brow culture and a ribald graphic style indebted to pop sources such as Mad magazine. Schorrs astonishing, highly polished realism, (inspired by Bosch, Brueghel and Dali), sets him apart from his best-known peers such as Camille Rose Garcia, Gary Baseman, and Mark Ryden. The exhibition, curated by SJMAs Senior Scholar and Curator of Collections Susan Landauer, is accompanied by a book published by Last Gasp, San Francisco.
    Exhibition runs June 20 through September 16, 2009 at the San Jose Museum of Art

    THHAAAAANNNNKKK YOOOOOUUUU ive been telling all my artist friends that you can use acrylics exactly like oil paints...no one listens... plus you can dilute them like water colors ...and cleanup is a snap...great work man

    i'm glad to feel i'm not alone when not being fluent on working with oils , in my opinion, Acrylics it's just as valuable as Oil based paintings.

    You can actually paint acrylic over oil if you spray Kamar varnish or a heavy coat of Crystal Clear (under another layer of something like gel medium). It might not be "archival" for 15+ years but it works fine for most illustrators who edit digitally anyway and sell their prints for a high price. But I definitely agree that most of everything can be done with acrylics and oils are pretty much unnecessary -- although you need some type of retarder to get a smooth untextured effect.

    Acrylic....ohhhhhhhyeeeeeesssssssss. Beautiful. Terence Mckenna used to talk about his DMT trips and how he would eventually come across these diminutive folks who organized the fabric of the universe. This video put an image to my imaginings ;)

    @worldwildwest the only problem is finding which brushes to use because acrylics are VERY harsh on natural brushes.

    Wow, that's art! Most of what I shown here is just meme art and portrait studies. I would love to just see more masterful artist showing their techniques and even hosting virtual galleries and announcing real ones too.

      Bubble lense perspective makes the anatomy awkward but also this is surrealism and so convention of form doesn't matter as much.

    @boogiekook its not the worn thing but the fact that using kolinsky or natural hair brushes other than bristle with acrylics is bad especially for soft brushes used for fine detail or smooth transitions liek schorrs work

    Acrylics nowadays have more color varieties. So many nice colors. As for oil colors, each layer takes 4 days to dry up before you can continue with your work. Sometimes, I put acrylics on top of oil, after it dries up.

    Generally speaking, most of my ideas... I STOLE FROM MARK RYDEN!
    And other times I just got an idea in my head... TO STEAL FROM MARK RYDEN!
    And then what I've been doing since I've been working in a larger format was to... STEAL THAT IDEA FROM MARK RYDEN!
    And then I rub the back of ONE OF MARK RYDEN'S PAINTINGS WITH CHALK and just transfer the whole thing.

      aaardvarkkk You’re in serious need of a history fact check. Todd Schorr predates Mark Ryden, and Schorr was in fact influential and inspirational to Ryden when Ryden was making his transition from commercial to fine art in the early 1990’s. See Juxtapoz magazine, June 2014, #161, pg. 54, for Ryden’s own account of this fact.

    • @aaardvarkkk
      @aaardvarkkk 9 лет назад

      "In serious need" as though trivial details are "serious" and "history". My close friend is the editor of Juxtapoz, and I am a friend of Mark Ryden, so I know the history AND the details. You need to read the article again, as well as many other articles to see why you're the only person with your point of view.

      aaardvarkkk Does it really matter? I feel like all these guys are ripping my own works off, but that doesn't make it so. It just means we co-developed around the same time. Never even heard of Ryden.

    • @aaardvarkkk
      @aaardvarkkk 9 лет назад

      Let's be honest, it would be the world biggest coincidence that Mark's unique style of work was the first on the scene and all over magazine covers and album covers planet-wide and THEN everyone's art starts looking very VERY similar to his. Not a coincidence.

      +aaardvarkkk could you maybe give me example of todd stealing from mark's work?
