I'm one of the very lucky Aussies who was there, and can tell you it was one of the best nights of my life. I've been to see John 17 times, because he is more than just a singer to us, he is the best of the best. He is a wonderful, kind and loving human being, who doesn't put money first, his beautiful family, we the people and our country have always come before money in this mans life. He genuinely loves his family, his fans and this country so much, and we have been blessed with having him in our lives, and watching him grow and blossom for generations. I'm in a family of 5 generations that have loved Johnny Farnham/John Farnham (Aussies will understand why I mentioned both names) always. He has helped our country by using his exceptional talents to raise money for water / food for livestock, to help our struggling farmers during long droughts. He participates in "Telethons" to raise money for handicapped children, and much more. He talks with normal people when visiting his local pub or music festivals. He is a warm and friendly man, whose had many struggles along the way, but NEVER puts himself above anyone else. The majority of us Aussies consider this exceptional man, to be family. If this world had more John Farnhams in it, it sure would be a much better place. We simply truly love him ❤. Loved your reaction, and thank you for sharing John with others. Hugs from Australia ❤
You may have noticed the crowd chanting 'Sadie! Sadie! Sadie!' at the start. This is tied into Johnny Farnham. In the 60's, John started as a Teen Pop Idol with 'Sadie, the Cleaning Lady'. and he was known as Johnny Farnham. he re-invented himself later as a more 'serious' singer and changed his name to John Farnham. This started an on-going joke between John & his fans. His fans would always ask for 'Sadie, the Cleaning Lady' and he would do everything he could to not sing it.
@@brettbridger362 Yes. Being a big fan, I was in the group chanting Sadie lol. Not sure you realise that you put this comment as a reply to mine, not on the main comment list. You might want to copy n paste onto the main page. Cheers 🙂

Greetings from New Zealand :) What a lovely post :) Everything you've said is so right about John. We love him here too across the ditch :) I've been a huge fan of his for years. He's such a special person in so many ways.
All of his stuff is great, but for most songs there's a version that's just that bit better than the others, and we want people to see the best he has to offer :) As a general rule, if you're looking for a song, try it from this concert first (with Melbourne Symphony Orchestra), and then from the Chain Reaction concert. Whispering Jack concert is also good. John is 74 and has just recovered from mouth cancer and had to have part of his jaw removed and reconstructed. From what his family say, he is cancer free and starting to sing around the house again, after a year of many operations and other cancer treatments. I doubt he'll sing in public again, partially due to the cancer, but also his manager and best friend of 40 or 50 years died a couple of years ago from Covid complications. John was absolutely devastated, they were very close, and Glenn was always there when John performed. Glenn is also the person that believed in John and even mortgaged his house to bankroll an album for John, when no-one else would touch him after he'd spent years basically being ignored. This album (Whispering Jack) was a huge success, and John has never looked back since. John probably can't imagine going back to any kind of tour or performing without Glenn being there. I suspect at this point he just wants to grow old with his wife and spend time with his family, dogs, and horses, but I guess you never know. If you want more, I'd check out When Something is Wrong With My Baby, a duet with Jimmy Barnes. Look for the performance from Hey Hey It's Saturday (an Australian variety show). There is plenty more from John as well, but better not to overwhelm you all at once ;)
Contrary to popular belief, at this recorded concert it wasn't the final encore, it was actually the second last encore. The Sadie/It's a Long Way to the Top encore was performed after Help.
This is definitely the One. I used to watch this every other day on my VHS copy. That was not just years ago, but decades ago. There is something magical about this performance, his voice, the instruments, the crowd. It's perfection
His version of Amazing Grace with his two back up singers is ridiculous good. John has just this year recovered from mouth cancer so he has his life with his family but his singing days are over. Unless a miracle happens.
This concert was advertised as John and his Big Band in typical Aussie understatement, it's a 100+ piece orchestra for crying out loud. lol This song is one of the last songs that he would sing at the end of the night after he had already sung his heart out for nearly 3 hours. Some have pointed out that this particular recording of the concert was closer to 2 hours of actual singing during the TV special, but it was also on the 4th or 5th night that he had sung like this. Either way, it was one of multiple nights that he did this on January 4-10, 1989, so his voice is still worthy of the accolades. Not many other singers can belt like that for even 2 or 3 nights without a rest. And besides picking at the exact details or this exact performance, Farnsey also has a way of getting deep into the emotions of your soul. A couple of songs worth checking have been mentioned below, plus these are worth a look also. The reason you haven't heard of him is because the US music industry is a closed little club. When John Farnham went to the US they didn't know which genre to put him in so his US promotions manager got him a couple of gigs in a little jazz club, where the MC introduced him as Jack Phantom. Couldn't even be bothered getting his name correct, so being a bit disheartened he wandered home to concentrate on his loyal fan base. The experience did give him inspiration to write a couple of good songs about missing his family, like this one. -Burn For You.. ruclips.net/video/4PPvOhPspEA/видео.html -Angels.. Notice how he holds the mike below his chest, both mikes are a metre away, which he does all the time to not drown out the other singers. So this sort of setting up the venue test is a must. Lol Black Dog. ruclips.net/video/F2Yi6TVi-sU/видео.html Besides having the best voice ever, JF can adjust his tone, pitch, volume, to match the person he is singing with to either match them or sing just under them depending on who's the head line act, he will even back himself down when he is the head line to give others their moment to shine, and if my ears were sensitive enough, I wouldn't be surprised if he could vary his vibrato, timbre and all of those other things that voices can do so he could accentuate the other singers.
You picked all of my most favourite songs!! But then those other songs he sings are also brilliant. The man is a LEGEND in every sense of the word. But all performances to listen to must be LIVE as that is where he shines.
John has been battling cancer and only recently said he was now cancer free THANKFULLY! He will still need some facial reconstruction going forward (his cancer was in his mouth) but his sons have said he is singing at home all the time....what a LEGEND!

Glen mortgaged his home to put John on the map and when asked why he did it and he's had others try
He replied he's the best singer I've ever herd and said John be miss managed all his life
They should let him sing what he wants and manger everything else just evey now and then I have to bring him back a bit
