I was at this actual concert & it was BRILLIANT! Being there to see & hear John perform live was electric & mesmerising. His concerts are among the best I've attended, his stage presence has always been second to none. A true showman, phenomenal singer, generously acknowledged his band & back-up singers every time, & interacted with the audience with such joy & kindness & humour. Farnsey is the GOAT. ♥

In the end, The guys in The Little River Band used to gaff tap John’s microphone to the Mic stand and the mic stand to the stage so he couldn’t get out and move around because they thought he was taking too much attention from the rest of the band. This is why he left and why he wrote this song. He told the band that they were holding him back as he felt this was his last chance to make it.

The one in the “white shirt” is from 1988/89 concert series with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra …
Little bit of trivia about the MSO concert series (which was after the release of the “Age of Reason” album in 1988); John’s long-time keyboardist and musical collaborator, David Hirschfelder, actually wrote all the sheet music for every instrument in the Orchestra… mind blown!

John has always had THE BEST musicians and they love to play for him. This is the concert where he performs Help both in its original form followed by his version. Check that out. If you love the guitar, check out Bret Garsed as the guitarist in John’s version of When the War is Over from the 2003 Last tour concert in Melbourne. Playing To Win is John’s signature Little River Band song even that while with LRB he had 3 bigger hits with them Down On The Border , The Other Guy and We Two .
John was the main songwriter for Playing To Win , it’s about his frustration with LRB’s infighting.
Unfortunately when it was released in late 1984 it’s wasn’t that successful, sadly it didn’t make the top 50 .
Playing To Win is the only LRB song John continued to sing after he left LRB within his solo career.
Playing To Win is regarded as a sporting anthem many sporting TV programs used Playing To Win as a promotional song .

I thinkmthis song was about John history how as a solo artist he didn't listen and did things his way and went broke until getting lead singer in little river band to make a living then original singer came back as John and band had different idea's idea's on the way the band should go and John then went solo again with his best mate as manager and promoter they sold everything including their homes for his solo career hence the song I'm playing to win and that they did as his mate and manager said John had been miss managed his whole career and then a start was born his friend and manager RIP Glen wheatleywas in another famous band called the masters apprentices a great hit band he's the one who started john's career off to what it is today this might help you understand the lyrics better
    cheers mate 🦘🇦🇺👍

John has one better live rock and roll song .Song called " ALL OUR SONS AND DAUGHTERS". The guitar work is sensational. This is a reference to it . ruclips.net/video/lygjcLZ9A4I/видео.html

Jack Jones (Stage name) was the guitarist he had his own group called Southern Sons at this time. He has an awesome voice also very much like John just not as powerful.

Have you seen Cold Chisel's reaction to their treatment by the US music Industry? "You Got Nothing I Want" ruclips.net/video/-BiJKq7ynms/видео.html&ab_channel=ColdChisel

Thats such an interesting comment. And I believe it. And luckily for us here in Oz, we were totally spoilt by amazing Aussie artists and bands who didn't just want to become industry puppets... And now 30 yrs on, the world is reacting to their greatness...but we were lucky enough to see them at a local venue (often) !!! True story, at the time Whispering Jack came out and Farnsey was to tour there, US music people who thought they knew best, wanted to remove the bagpipes from Youre the Voice.... And John said, not happening.... How egotistical for US to be telling an artist, sure you can tour, but you need to change your sound and perform on our terms!!!. Too funny..... Their loss, our gain...

@@LisaS23N I completely agree, we got to keep them free from the US influence which I think would have ruined them.

If you want to do a reaction to John Farnhams main guitarist it was Brett Garsed most of the time. Have a listen to johns song “let me out” crazy vocals as well as a crazy solo 🙂

My opinion Little River Band stifled Johns talent.. they wanted the tame Glen Shorrock #2. John was too good for them.

So, you only played Black Dog for Patreons? So if we can’t afford to pay you we don’t hear it. Way to get me not to Subscribe. John wouldn’t do that.
