Good thing you didn't poison the Ashes Jon. Dragon Age, unlike Mass Effect, isn't afraid to murder your companions through the story. If you poison it, Leliana abandons you (or if she was in your party, she will attack you and you have to kill her.)
33:44 Jon " Dragon Companion, maybe it's a dragon that can take human form" Now I have no idea about game lore but Kolgrim seems to believe the dragon is a god reincarnated in dragon form who was seeming killed by another god, but splashing blood on her original ashes will release her full power. A guy walks up to you in a cave, tells you "the Virgin Mary is back and she's a lizard now!" And the issue you take with him is that he might be a blood mage???
In that you imply that Andraste aka "the virgin mary" is a fact in the first place. Which only ONE side has told you yet. On which basis would ingame JON think that the Chantry version is unquestionably true? That's a wild assumption. If you leave that assumption out, Jon is perfectly entitled to question what he hears from any relogious cult. And in the real world the immaculate conception was (literally) fought over within the church before it was added to the bible. And that still doesn't make it a real historical "fact" you "could not possibly challenge".

@@ThatOneDude695 Well, that's an interesting theory that I've never actually heard before. Would love to see Morrigan's reaction if that is true.
Well, we know for a fact that the so-called "Maker" isn't real, and by extension we know for a fact that Andraste is not by its side.
Good thing you didn't poison the Ashes Jon. Dragon Age, unlike Mass Effect, isn't afraid to murder your companions through the story.
If you poison it, Leliana abandons you (or if she was in your party, she will attack you and you have to kill her.)
If you harden Leliana you can talk her into though she still isn't happy
With Wynne if she's there she dies, if she's not she leaves no matter what
33:44 Jon " Dragon Companion, maybe it's a dragon that can take human form"
Now I have no idea about game lore but Kolgrim seems to believe the dragon is a god reincarnated in dragon form who was seeming killed by another god, but splashing blood on her original ashes will release her full power.
Me thinks this maybe a bad idea but carry on Jon 😊
Jon: "I don't know what determines when a spell ends for some characters."
Me: I wonder when Jon will realize that Resistances (Physical Resist and Mental Resist) are used to resist AND recover from status effects and spells.
IRC status effect have either stable duration or are affected by party size. Depending on case by case basis.
Cone of Cold is literally broken it is a guaranteed freeze no matter what, the Archdemon gets frozen by it
@@rpbuilds No, it's broken, it freezes stuff that should be immune to freezing
IIRC COC has an 80% chance to freeze, vs winters breath having 25%. Then of course there's the resistance chance based on creature and difficulty and mods. Not to mention the various other spells that can paralyze.
I'd say DAO normal is too easy, which is why many play on nightmare AND with difficulty mods.
@@Aeroldoth3 Quoting the wiki:
"Due to a bug in the spell script, only the enemy currently selected (locked on) by the caster is allowed a physical resistance check. All other enemies hit by the cone will always be frozen, unless their spell resistance negates the spell."
@@vaspeter2600 The game is 11 years old. By now it must be assumed it's intentional.
@@5Andysalive Intentional? What, the rushed coding?
I have one rule, if there’s a chest I must open it. If it’s treasure I get cool stuff, it it’s a mimic I get more xp. It’s a win/win as far as I’m concerned.
Jon: Morrigan doesn't know Stone Fist!
She does Jon. You just don't have it on the bar with the rest of her spells and don't ever have her use it. Due to only wanting her to use her frost spells and doing some healing most of the time.
Yeah it is strange that the ai does not need to use the shortcuts the player needs
Yeah but they can still use spells you don't know I've seen it happen, they used a spell I know for a fact I didn't have
I was kinda convinced going into this that we'd end up with dead Leliana and Wynne.
I was kinda hoping he’d go that route
I was kind of hoping he'd do it so he'd stop calling Lellianna Claire, I get the resemblance, but it's a touch weird no?
@@magoshighlands4074 No, not weird in the slightest.
Such a pity you didn't take Claire on this mission, it's her idea of the best date ever surely?
Depends what you do with the blood.
I also keep calling her Claire now xD
I mean she does love Benor so I'm sure a deep dark cave involving a dragon fight and necromancy would be her thing. Oh, you mean Leliana
A guy walks up to you in a cave, tells you "the Virgin Mary is back and she's a lizard now!" And the issue you take with him is that he might be a blood mage???
"Jesus was a dragon all along!" *dun dun duuuun*
I mean I've heard worse conspiracy theories
In that you imply that Andraste aka "the virgin mary" is a fact in the first place. Which only ONE side has told you yet. On which basis would ingame JON think that the Chantry version is unquestionably true? That's a wild assumption.
If you leave that assumption out, Jon is perfectly entitled to question what he hears from any relogious cult.
And in the real world the immaculate conception was (literally) fought over within the church before it was added to the bible. And that still doesn't make it a real historical "fact" you "could not possibly challenge".
@@vaspeter2600 I for one welcome our new dragon overlord.
There are many species of lizard that can reproduce without males around if they have to, so I'd say "story checks out."
"Alistair's surprisingly not upset with the blood magic defiling of Andraste's remains, but whatever."
That may have to do with the persuade check you did while speaking to him ten seconds ago.
John: I got several Rouge skills i have not been using...
Me: He finally read everything the Lockpick skill does including trap detection
John expands his action bar and forgetting he hasn't been able to open most chest along the game.
Me: So close...
The editing in this video was fantastic! (Especially from 1:00:12 on). Great job Jon and Claire!
Here is a thought...what if Andraste was just the human the dragon was possessing at the time? The male is running about as a arch-demon darkspawn. The female, though...hmm...sounds familiar, doesn't it?
I'd turn into a sarcastic ass if you broke into my home, killed my mate, and I needed to hide so I wouldn't die, too. And I mean, it would be fun for a while to make the jerks my pawns, but eventually...you just want them to leave you alone, right? Necromancy, plague dragon...great revenge...😅🎉❤
The cut to "LIES!" almost made me choke on my coffee.
45:34
Holy shit, I've played this a hundred times, how did I miss the Monty Python reference there?
Nobody expects the Monty python references!
What's your favorite colour?
Jon, your strategic mind both baffles and amazes me. In the mirror match, you jump to "lets attack the tank first!".
Can we please take a moment to salute the real hero of the run: Kolgrim's voice ACTOR! YES! Now this is a man who realises you should end every sentence with a SHOUT!
Also the cut at 1:00:25 is the best thing in the series so far.
I hate his voice 😭 His actor is great but I hate his voice because of the screaming
1:00:12 I love how it immediately just smash cuts to Kolgrim's response after this.
Jon, saying this right now: Momentum and Haste do NOT stack. Do NOT have both active at the same time. It results in a bug where your attacks only be at regular speed due to a coding error that limits attack speed from going beyond 50%.
He can lover his attack speed with Dual Striking though. That said he really should have installed combat fix mod instead or alongside quest fix mod.
@@Sanvone dual striking has like a 30% chance to miss her something
A workaround would be the cast dispel on his rogue so that everyone else still benefits.
@@brad7504 Every 3rd attack animation in Dual striking is miss (bug). Even with that it increases overal damage output considerably. If mod fix is involved without any drawback you basically deal double dmg.
You really like jumping to conclusions in this series
He does it in every series
@@legion999 I feel that there have been some really big leaps In this particular case.
And it's often on the basis of some sort of wishful thinking. "Ohhh a dragon companion would be great to have.."
Of course you can read all about the world in a a wiki and can avoid ever bothering speculating and trying to figure things out...
Of course you would be a sad, tragic figure for "playing" games like that. I VERY much prefer him actually doing his own thing.
@@5Andysalive People just remarked on it, they didn't say it was a bad thing. No need to be so touchy, pal.
The bit at the end with Alistair earned my subscription, I'm in so many tears. X'DD
Oh my god, I've played this game for six years and I had absolutely no idea you could expand the bar like that
HOW DID YOU MANAGE? hahaha what a nightmare!
NEITHER DID I
57:18 He said it! He said the thing!! XD
(Edit) Also Jon, Combat Behavior. Top right of the tactics screen.
I'm really looking forward to when Jon does Shales quest :D
Jon @ 23:05 "I appreciate a game that's got some teeth, pun not intended" followed by "DA dungeons might be a little bit too long ... they might just DRAG-ON slightly longer than they need to" had me chuckling :)
"Apparently I'm too dumb to have realised it"
It wouldn't be a MATN playthrough without drawing woefully inaccurate conclusions and sticking to them without any evidence!
At least this time he believed what characters in the dungeon believed. For Jon that is striking close to home.
@@farshnuke You're not wrong!
Yeah, listen to the guy that drinks dragon blood like gatorade
Spicy!
You did a lot better on the riddles than I did my first time. Very well done.
Thanks for the video!
Knowing a little of the lore, Jon's "Andraste was actually a dragon" theory isn't THAT far off the mark.
The denerim crashes are caused by the game not using all your ram. You have to change the files a bit but it should reduce crashing.
I'm just glad to see Jon getting confident with the tactics menu. damn the first couple episodes were hard to see
I like how you just kind of totally missed he told you that you killed their young. The only young you ran into were the young dragons, and there's only one adult dragon... which they worship...
Glad to see this mission in the playthrough! I'm definitely not going to mention any details, but one of the best parts of playing these games are that there's always a LOT of layers to any of the reveals you get in any of the games, even the kind of stuff that are immediately debunked always ends up leading to otherinteresting revelations and complications coming down the line if you keep playing the series. It's such a cool way to do dynamic world building!
I love that the statue of Andraste shows the flame in her hand, like she is a mage, and it was built by those who knew her.
Thank you sir for this series. This brings me back to when I first played thus. And as a rogue as well. Keep going bro.
The way he knows nothing and keeps discovering the world while thinking out loud is most of this series fun. It's hilarious when you know what he gets wrong and also when you remember yourself making the same mistakes 💖

The dragon doesn't attack you even if you don't ally with Kolgrim, the fight is with Kolgrim and his goons
Unless you blow the dragon horn, which, let's face it, Jon would.
Hadn't actually finished the video when I posted that, but I called it.
I love how Jon went from wanting to help Apostates and seeing Blood Magic as something that should be accepted to having alarms the moment anything related to blood is involved. The Circle of Magi quest really put things in perspective about how it all works in that world huh?
I love how despite knowing that Alistair's sole job is to tank to protect the others, when fighting their own shades, he does exactly that. Did he also forgot that she has Heal?
Useful tip: If anyone is being pinned down, like what happened with the Drake, or when Dragon was 'eating' Alistair, use Force Field on the party member being targetted; it'll save them.
“I am justice. I am vengeance” and I am now that Leonardo DiCaprio ‘he did the thing!’ meme, holy moly!
44:19 Ooh the foreshadowing
Fighting Kolgrim out there is easier since he has less backup
I love how Jon always says "I don't want to make a final decision" and then clicks the "make a decision" button while thinking he's just playing along :)
Not going to lie, I've not seen someone with this low Alistair approval without actually trying to do that.
How? He hates everything, you can't even bring him with you without him losing approval.

Venom
(Usable Item)
Requires: Poison-Making
Range: Personal
Cooldown: 60s
Weapons coated in this mild poison deal additional nature damage with each hit and may inflict a penalty to movement speed.
For the room where you encounter the goats in cages and then the mini dragon ambush, I used to heavily trap the entire passage, stealth in, trigger the ambush, and then get the heck out. Not very immersive storywise, but boy did it work 😜😸
Shale fighting an entire army of dragons while Jon and Alistair take their time with one. Shale deserves lots of shiny stones after that!
Jon, your 'Andraste was really a dragon' theory was entertaining, you actually made a decent case for it. To be fair, high dragons were worshipped thru history, especially in Tevinter and all archdemons are dragons. That would have been a great twist, but no, they're just crazy, very crazy. It's weird that there's not an option in the dialogue to say you'll destroy the ashes but it's a lie - your companions act like you're dead serious.
An interesting side effect of the urn quest is confirmation that a surprising amount of the Andraste legend is actually true. For a religion, they stuck pretty close to the true events. If you can't trust the original people involved, who can you trust?
"I did defile the ashes. Yes. Yes, I did."
"LIES!"
That's an end card right there!
I love this series. Thank you so much for doing it
“I should be using vulnerability hex more” he says, while continually avoiding Mind Blast regardless of the overall number of enemies or if Morrigan is surrounded
His reward is the reaver specialization
If you come back and kill the dragon you'll get more materials for armor.
*laughs in Ferelden at the concept of the dragons being crammed into the game so Bio could use the name "Dragon Age"*
Excellent. I’ve been waiting for this and it’s lunch break time!
Omg I hope Jon doesn't disappoint this episode.
Edit: Glorious! Good job Jon!
Alistair essentially becoming a giant grey blob in the middle of an important battle pretty much sums things up nicely 🤣
I can't believe Jon just casually came to the same conclusion as the cult
High Dragon is the largest and most deadly of all dragons
Force Field is really good, you basically take a dangerous enemy unit out of combat for a long time, and even most bosses can't resist that.
The best part of reaver is it is basically a blood mage for warriors
And I can’t believe Jon after all this time decides blood magic can not be defended
"Kick him in the balls, kick him in the dragonballs!" - I didn't know Dragons had 7 balls
I want a compilation of jon just judging companions from the other games based on appearance and like one line of dialogue
The final upgrade to shapeshifting makes it much more of a viable and useful skill to have
(3:45) Jon forgets that he specifically planned to follow up a freeze with Crushing Prison.
(33:33) I knew Jon would be able to find a justification for obvious evil.
Bonus points for feeding Andraste-Dragon? LOL
Don't worry, the dungeons in Dragon Age 2 are handled in a completely different direction.
I like to imagine Varric just can't bother describing the locations as anything other than the "warehouse" or whatever
