    If you go back to the stock rack, LFD off road makes great cross bars for the stock rack, but allow for mounting options to use aftermarket accessories. They also make a stainless steel option, so you don't have to lose sleep over rust. I think they look great too.

    The pics looks like maybe has bed liner paint or something like it , I would say water got under material and rotted roof

    I was considering the Prinsu, but I had the same reservations as you. I think I have settled on the Sherpa because I, too, like their mounting system.

      Wish I would’ve went with the Sherpa as well. That’s what I get for trying to save a few bucks.

    All things rust and we don't know what location that person is from, they may have been a heavily salted area. I wouldn't let it bother you. YOLO.

      The guy was in HI and then San Diego I believe, so salt was definitely an issue.

    I worried about this also when I installed a Rhino Rack Backbone. I used both a sealant on the threads and then covered the whole footwell where the rack attaches with RV self leveling sealant. I filled the void of the well to the top of the roof. It shrunk up to about half way down when it cured. I'll go after it again one hot day next summer and hope for the best.

      Out of curiosity, what kind/brand of sealant did you use?

    I’m keeping the stock oem with an Nfab modular rack/basket. I just need something to throw one of those weatherproof bags up there. Maybe an awning.

    I get where ur coming from, but even the factory racks are prone to rusting, any part of any car especially if it was installed by having to drill into the body or frame is prone to rust. If those things are installed properly and u maintain ur vehicle properly as far as cleaning it regularly, then rust shouldn’t really be a major concern. When I had my 4Runner I never saw or heard of any major rust issues aside from around the rear hatch area. And the one u have was one of the top rated racks out there, if it was as prone to causing rust I’m sure it wouldn’t be so highly rated, the photos u showed were most likely cause by improper installation and no sealant was used or improperly used.

      That’s a fair assessment. The fella who posted the pics on the forum admitted several times that it was probably his own fault. Still though, those pics sent shivers down my spine.

      @@MCraven10 I totally get it, I maintain my truck very well but every since I found out about the common issues almost everyone has at different milestones, like the torque converter going bad around 100k and the afm lifters failing at random times. I’m always terrified that on day I’ll get in and it just would work. (I’m talking about a 2015 Silverado, I traded my 4Runner for it, now I miss my 4Runner. But the Silverado has been more practical, when it’s paid off I’ll be getting a new 4 runner or maybe a Tacoma)

    That dude posting that rust is his own stupidity and laziness. Don’t blame human error on the truck

      Yup, I get that. That dude admitted that he was most likely at fault. He also had a couple of extenuating circumstances. He was a marine who deployed a lot, so his 4Runner would sit for long periods of time, possibly allowing moisture to creep into places over time.

    Are those BMW R1200GS/GSA panniers sitting on the shelf behind you?

      @MCraven10  11 месяцев назад +1

      Good eye! Those are the panniers for my Suzuki V-Strom 1000. However, I do believe both BMW and Suzuki panniers are made by Touratech, so they look the same.
