Your teachings on how to cut the shelf vs a non square receiving base. This portion specifically helped me get back after this project. Didn’t realize my lath and plaster walls and stud finding would be such a let down. Thanks for a coaching type closet renovation.
This was extremely helpful, and I love how you always make sure to include both genders when speaking to the audience, it makes us DIY ladies feel included!
I’m trying to redo my closet like this since my shelf ledger is literally peeling off the wall. MDF trim was used by previous owners and I have A LOT of clothes hanging. Thanks for this old video! It’s still helping people today. Also, I don’t have a Brad nailer, is it cool if I just use screws all throughout? Thanks again.
Thanks for the comment. Awesome this is a good video glad you like it, and it helps you out. To answer your question yes absolutely can just use screws. Good luck don’t use MDF get some pine or some fingerjointed pre-primed pine. For the ledger let us know if you need anything. Happy building my friend
Great question! We actually paint the shelves afterwards. That way we can prep all the nail and screw holes with wood putty sand, then primer and paint everything already installed. You can paint first I’ve noticed in the past when you do that it gets scratched during install then usually have to paint again. So we do it after 👍
@Co-Know-Pro, what if the closet I want to work on and drill into studs has wires and plumbing detection from stud finder? When I took off the old shelf and rod, I noticed that nails were only used, no screws. Should I do the same? Thanks man. First timer here and I am really enjoying all the experiences so far.
Great question, you can use nails only but that will limit the amount of weight you can add to the shelf and rod if it’s a very small closet then that would be no big deal if it’s a bigger closet, then you may want to think about using screws. If you’re going to use nails and there, 2 inch 2 1/2 inch nails to get into the stud that would penetrate any electrical plumbing as well. If there are no nail plates covering electrical or plumbing on the existing studs.Which there should be if it’s a more modern build. If it’s an older structure, then possibly no nail safety plates over electrical or plumbing. If I were you, I would add a screw where I felt it was the safest place to do it at least a few on your ledger. Then you can connect the rest of the ledger with nails. And remember, if you’re screwing or nailing into a stud, and you feel it hit something hard don’t continue to try to go past that you’re going to have to relocate the nail up or down because it might be hitting a safety nail plate. Hope that helps your build 👍
@@co-know-proconstructiontips thanks for getting back to me, I will proceed with caution and I think I will limit my ideas I had before with fewer shelves and higher placement. It’s a double sized (76’ X 25’) closet but has a staircase underneath thus the floor is at an angle 📐. Weird I know. So I’m trying to make the best out of that space and took off the old rod and shelf as well as the sliding doors and rails, patched and painted and got the idea to make it an entertainment wall. So I was going to hang a tv, soundbar and shelf’s. lol. It looks better than it sounds (in my mind at least), but I’ll keep you updated on any progress as I have no time limit to work on this. Thanks again.
I started doing this in my closet but had to stop. I needed to know how to make the pole line up with the bracket and metal rod holders. I think i have it now.
Nice, if you did not figure it out yet,a quick tip is put the metal bracket up to the side ligers and use a pencil to trace out the part of the bracket that holds a pole onto the side wood pieces.Just hold it up trace it out, quickest way to do it. I hope that makes sense to you 👍
Thanks for the thought you put into explaining everything. It’s very clear and you answered and questions because the thinking is so logical and thorough =). We are thinking of using a whole plank of cedar for the top shelf; aside from price, are there any considerations to take in mind (e.g. different types of screws since the cedar will be harder than pine)?
Wow thank you for that awesome comment👍 as far as the cedar you will be okay with standard screws as long as you use a pilot drillbit or a pilot drillbit with a counter sink combo bit before you install your screws and you will be good. If it’s going to be outside then definitely use some deck rated screws but still recommend using a pilot with a counter sink. You can also practice on a sample piece of cedar before you actually commit to your finish piece to make sure everything works the way you want to as far as screws pilots countersinks whatever you’re going to be doing depending on your finish. Hope that helps you out and thanks for the amazing comment and for watching👍😎
Great job thanks. I just didn't understand one thing. When you measure the length 3 inches, was it to the bottom of the round part of the hardware or to where the screw hole is already predrilled in the hardware?
It’s 3 inches from the bottom of the shelf to the bottom side of your closet rod. The hardware has a little flange on the bottom with a screw hole. Above that is the beginning lip where your rod will sit that should be 3 inches from the bottom of your shelf. You can also measure your closet rod support hardware the center bracket from the top of the hardware down to the bottom of the arch that’s where you want your rod to be level with so it sits nice.
I’d go with 2 brackets depending on how much stuff you are going to hang on the rods You have the two side mounts then give yourself even spacing between the two brackets should be good if you wanna go overkill go with 3 but 2 is good 👍🏻
I am making my height of the closet 68 inches. I know I go around and make the measurements and then use a leveler to make sure it level. The top of my 1x3 goes to that line, right?
Great question, check out this video below ⬇️ it is another closet we did. Hope it helps answer your questions. ruclips.net/video/Y_YTtQIxPMU/видео.html
any tips on if we wanted to make an l shaped shelf. how do i join the shelves in the corner. don't have a lot of special equipment/one use gadget tools. Thanks!
You can use a splice a 1x4 cut to give your seem at the corner some strength. Or you can cut plywood into the corner piece you want, then it will be solid but will still need a splice we’re plywood connects to other shelving on the sides. Sorry it took 5 years to respond but better late then never 😊👍
Hi, yes the shelf is 12 inches wide/deep. Also, the height of a standard closet shelf is between 64 - 72 inches from the floor. The one in the video is 67 inches off the floor. The height of a shelf and pole depends on your needs. Hope that helps. Thanks for the question, CoKnowPro.

@@co-know-proconstructiontips it did I thought the same but thought it would look tacky but it doesn’t so I’m have to do this I was thinking of using dowels but I’m using mdf but im use dowels in the rod because I got like 17 ft run to do
@@arealmaintenanceandrepairl1103 nice Remember you can run like a one and a half inch trim or just a one by 2 along the Face of the shelf and will help hide all your splices.
Your bracket appears to be an accurate 90 degree angle. The brackets I ordered aren't and the back angle of them is over 1/4" lower than the shelf. I think I'd better exchange them for correctly angled 90 degree ones!
Sometimes they come from the manufacture, a little bit off the 90° angle 📐 Definitely try to pick out the ones that look as square as possible if it’s a little off, should not be an issue when you screw everything together. Great question, happy building

Yes definitely but you need to secure with some screws as well. Don’t just count on the 18 gauge to hold up the ledger or the shelf. Great question 👍🏻

How much is the labor??
$400
Why do you need a bracket for a pole ? Can’t you go without one
You could go without one but it will bow anytime the pole is at 5ft or greater we use a pole and bracket in the center for sag hope that helps 👍
