    After trying out snaking a long cable from the person to the camera, I've changed to plugging the microphone into a small recorder, which I put in the pocket of whoever is being recorded. It's a more flexible setup because now the person is free to move about, or I can move the camera, without worrying about the cable getting snagged on something. In that scenario, a short cable is better.

    I like the sound of the Boya mic. I have 2 much more expensive mics but prefer the way the Boya sounds in my setup.. The only problem is the occasional Boya failures. I had the camera/smartphone switch short out on one. Simple solution, buy a few of them. I keep 3 on hand all the time, with a fourth one for a spare .... The only thing I don't like about the Boya is the long cable. It could be 1/2 the length and it would still be ok for me.

    Rode all the way man for your test! I have to thank you because your video is extremely short and to the point, no unnecessary fluff or anything. It really helped me made up my mind. Cheers!

    The Boya BY-M1 sounded a bit too hot in this video... The hisses were relatively strong. You'll notice right after he switches to the Rode Smartlav+.

    it have a small distortion which can fixed easily in a software but it is very nice, the rod one sims to dump the sound a little bit like it clips the high frequencies I guess or its brings down a little the medium frequencies

    I got a lot of distortion on my Boya BY-M1 :( Even when I set the audiogain to -10. I will have to lower the mic far away from the person I am interviewing, which is not ideal. I will buy the Rode and see if it is better. I wished I knew about the distortion before I bought it :( I had to redo 3 interviews, because the distortion was so bad...

    Hi, great review. does BOYA BY-M1 Lav mic easily pickup fan or a/c humming in the room? and is it suitable for making tutorials? Thank you

    • @SubhashisDuttahere
      @SubhashisDuttahere 4 года назад +1

      Hi. I just bought one last week. It is very good for making tutorials but yes it does pickup humming sounds of fan/ac. It's not that audible if you can edit your voice in post process but I always keeps those turned off for better quality audio.

    The most important thing in this video is missing.Before talking about smarphone microphones, you must speak about the smartphone itself, because all the smartphones have diferent recording soundcards, which makes them usable or not, with more self noise or less.So the microphones, they can be tested, only after you make a description of the recording medium, but you are acting like all the smartphones are the same, for your information, they are tottaly different.

    Hi mark, do we even have the app to adjust the audio decibel for rode and boya? Thanks for the sharing. Great review!

      If you shoot in something like Filmic Pro you do get some audio control.

    Hi there Mark, I have been using the boya on my iPhone 8plus for basically engine bay/turbo videos on my car, but I have found I have to have it miles and miles away (attached to front bumper almost, further away from engine the better quality gets) and still getting horrific distortion on the revs however catching the turbo noises nicely, I seem to be seeing a lot of motorbike/car videos using the Rode with absolutely zero distortion, would you recommend the Rode has far far les distortion? Thanks and I will look forward to your reply. (I have tried several different wind blockers etc on the boya and they don’t change much as for the distortion)

      To the untrained ear could not tell the real difference if anything the Boyer sounded richer.

    • @MarkEganTraining
      @MarkEganTraining  5 лет назад

      @@vinvin1715 interesting. For me it depends whether or not I am wearing earphones. If I am wearing good earphones I hear a clear difference, but otherwise the difference is not huge. I don't think you're the only one who likes the sound of the Boya. It's a great mic, especially in quieter conditions. Thanks for watching.
