    To be honest, if you push your Highs on the Lav mic, you got the best sound with crisp, the other one has less body and warmt. You could dim the lows a bit on the lav as well a bit to push it to the next level. Also you can degrease your release of the waveform so you'll delete the room reverb.

  • @everydaywayne

    Great video Nolan! One point I think creators overlook is there is a lot of discussion on what kind of mic sounds better, but I think there's not enough importance placed on sounding consistent. Regardless of what mic you ultimately use, having a consistent sound throughout your entire video helps the viewer experience. (Unless of course you are doing an A/B test lol)

  • @StratRider
    @StratRider 3 года назад +38

    I heard minor echos with Mic A and Mic B sounded better to me. The entire time I had convinced myself that Mic B was the Lav Mic.
    My preference would still be the Lav mic though because they can be wireless, ability to turn away from the camera and move around more.
    Also, sometimes I feel that those who are showing their big badass Mic's are just trying to look . . . well, like "hey, I'm a celebrity, look at my mic" LOL

    • @mrhobs
      @mrhobs Год назад +1

      Same, Mic B definitely sounded better, which made me think it was the lav. (Less room echo/ambiance/whatever.) That's almost hard to believe... although some lav mics aren't the highest quality, so I guess that may be the case here.

    Yes I guessed right A Lav and B shotgun. But it took some concentrating with headphones to detect the difference. Imho, when in the studio either is fine. When out and about the Lav will give consistent sound whatever you're doing.

    Microphone B, after about 40 seconds it's obvious. A picks up more room noise/reverb, but placement can heavily impact. Note how the lavalier is somewhat underneath the clip and t-shirt fold? MIGHT sound a bit better if it was pointing straight up?

    I can’t say either sounded better without knowing more about the sound setup (or at least whether it was the same for both or tuned for each mic). Just listening on my phone, both are clear and usable, with A having a bit more reverb and B having too much top end. Folks listening with good headphones may have a completely different experience.

    It’s always a compromise. A studio with a boom mic wins, but the others each have their moment. I can’t do automotive related videos with my Camera mounted mic if i’m walking around and the camera is stationary, but I prefer it usually over my lav when I can use it.

    I liked Mic B better. Mic A sounded a little boomy by comparison. I like using a shotgun mic. I mostly record guitar lesson videos, and sometimes I look down at the guitar and talk while I play, which means that sometimes I'm talking directly into the mic if I'm wearing a lav. Plus, I would get a lot of noise if I adjusted the guitar strap or moved around while I was playing. I started using the Rode VideoMic Pro a few months ago, and it works really well for what I need. I have the mic pointed *mostly* down at my face from above. It's slightly off center so that it can also pick up the sound from my amp, which is pointed right up at the Rode. After fiddling with my amp's volume, I found a good balance between the guitar and my speaking voice, so I don't have to record and edit separate audio signals. Simple is good.

Or do you think Lavalier Rhode mics or shotgun mics on out of Frame boom arms or shotgun microphones on a a73 Sony camera is better or a more professional look is better?? Or do you think you would need both of two different styles for different scenarios like product reviews videos vs podcast or gaming and streaming and maybe tutorial videos or even educational videos oh yeah and pc building videos I ask because I plan on building one this upcoming week and I need to fine this information out ASAP any suggestions please and thank you ???

    I study sound for film and actually I would always prefer to use both when you’ve got the option.
    The shotgun mics will make your voice more realistically pleasing and are way more truthful to the location, where as the lavs will be capturing the low frequencies of the voice more easily because of it’s distance.
    When you sync both of them together, you will have a wonderful combination of both the natural space, as the lower frequencies of the speech to give the voice more body ;)

    The Deity is no longer available. Can you recommend a similar quality microphone. By the way, I found microphone B a bit overdone in the overtones and the sound felt a bit thin, listened to on M-Audio AV40 speakers (listening device should always be considered, too at such tests)
