  • After a little coaxing by my friends online, I delved into the new and exciting world of Snapshots on the Line 6 Helix. I was very impressed by the ability to get 8 different sounds without having to switch presets! Very cool stuff.

On global settings there's a parameter about snapshots that you must set to "discard" instead of "recall", so that when you change snapshot it doesn't hold on to the pedal changes you may have made.

Richie Castellano I am thinking of Buying a helix and I was just wondering if instead of naming the sound for the actual foot switch you can name the name of a track that you are playing?

    • @ChainsawChristmas
      @ChainsawChristmas 6 лет назад

Yes you can. I name my presets by the bands or songs that I'm recreating. I have a Gojira for general Gojira sounds, but I have a "Stranded" one that has the synth added for the Whammy effect.

I was going to purchase the unit today... being there are no trails between presets changed my mind... all that technology and they couldn’t make the sounds trail...

    • @sjsphotog
      @sjsphotog 5 лет назад +2

@@fredzungri5835 yes you can set it up to not cut off trails if you switch but this must be done in snapshot mode not preset mode

Line6 is a bunch of geniuses - when they designed this thing. So much capability - so easy to use. I probably use 2% of the capabilities. Your explanation of snaps and the capabilities of this thing is also genius. The fact that you and the community share your experience, strength and hope makes the Helix even more valuable. I’m so happy I got this thing, and happy whiling away the hours watching your videos and getting inspiration. You rock on so many levels. Thank you.

You can turn off the feature where the snapshots remember what you've done so you always have the snapshot you programmed :)

Richie...awesome video. Here's a shortcut: When setting snapshot parameters instead of holding down the knob and scrolling through the controllers you can push down and simultaneously turn the knob left or right and the brackets will appear, automatically setting it to snapshot.

Geek mode ON! Great run-through on the Helix for this engineer with a guitar problem. With my old ME box dying I was looking at putting together a pedal board but you make a convincing case that the Helix will do the work of $20K worth of pedals and preamps and cabs, and sound good doing it. This vid alone probably is going to save me 30 hours of hacking through the learning curve.

And finally getting ready to record solo albums and doing metal bands and stage productions etc..

Awesome video! I've been learning a lot about the Helix and the 212 Powercab plus...I don't own them yet, but seems a smart way to go. I like the idea of having two pieces of equipment that can do the work of 30 amps and 30 cabinets. I can save time, money, and space and spend more time playing. Thank you again for all your informative videos!

My Vox ToneLab LE died after 12 years of use. I just ordered the Helix and it will arrive tomorrow. Latency between patch changes was going to be a deal breaker for me. This video set my mind at ease. I'm curious how the Helix will react to feedback. I had the Line 6 Spider when it came out and the feedback was horrid. It couldn't compute. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

Hi im new to your channel and subscribed. I used the old pod hd500X and switching preset i never noticed a gab in sound when going from a clean tone and then to a solo clean tone preset. When i bought the Helix i was like WTF! When i switched presets there was a 2 sec delay before the patch was at full strength. It really made me crazy. But then i started to understand snapshots. And now im happy again. You can pretty much have tons of patches in one preset now with no gab in sound when switching. Sometimes you have to be creative to get it all to fit in and not overload all processing power. But it is cool. You are super good guitar player and i love your sounds. Best regards from Denmark.

I use "Setlists" for diff guitars and snapshots as Richie is using here. That way the diff guitars are already dialed in and I don't need to do that on the fly. For example, one Setlist is names TVJ for my Strat loaded with TV Jones T-Armond pups, then it has all the snapshots I need set up for that guitar.

Hey man, In the snapshots its SO MUCH EASIER to do the parameter changes within the snapshots. WHILE YOU'RE PRESSING DOWN the encoder, turn to your desired location, Boom Save. Thats how I do mine man, it makes it all happen within the main page without having to dive any deeper into the unit.

thanks for this video and to the comment section for also providing key info.
I would love to see an FX comparison between the helix and HD500x, its no question the helix has superior sound, yet when I read the specs it seems to have less than half the FX the HD series has. I know not everyone uses the synth and spin cycle but I do and I'd save up for a helix if it had all the stuff the HD has.

Great video. Thanks for the info. I unpacked my Helix (w/free backpack to carry it about) last evening. Played through presets. Sounds amazing. I have several different rigs and I’m finding this has some similarities to the Roland GR-55, which I’ve used live for the past 8 years or so. That rig is fabulous to use due to the flexibility of the unit's bridge/saddle setup. I’m sure all of us looking on are appreciative of the video work you’ve put up on the whys and wherefores of the Helix. My son is a touring bassist and he is getting a Helix in the next few weeks. In the meantime he’ll be learning about it on mine. Thanks again and keep the song covers coming. Love watching "the band" play. Everyone is a solid player and you look like it’s a blast! 🖖 dif-tor heh smusma

The M13 had features like this. This isn't terribly new tech, but maybe it wasn't incorporated into devices like the HD500. This is a lot like the "Hit" button on the TC Helicon Voicelive 3 that I use, where you hit a single button and it turns off and on various effects all at once within a single preset chain. Like if you had 6 feet and could hit a bunch of stomp boxes at once.
This is also what a lot of digital controlled true bypass loopers can do.

Richie I’ve actually been considering selling all my amp/speaker rigs in exchange for the helix either floor or pro. I just went through the pilots guide for the 212 plus and it’s amazing. I’ve seen your BOC live setup. It would be a major setup change fir you and it looks like the other guitarists are mainly old school. Do you think you’d consider 2 12 power cab plus for your stage rig. I also highly doubt that BOC would permit the youngest wippersnapper and by far the best guitarist to have a stereo wide field?

Hey Richie, great stuff. Thank you! I was wondering if you found a good way to "level set" ALL Helix patches. For example, I'd like to ensure I don't have a large volume jump from one patch to another. I don't mind pre-programmed jumps in Snapshots as some may have a little boost as required, but I'd like to find a way to match the volume or output levels of ALL presets easily rather than by ear.

Great demo. I loved snapshots because came from having a big board and loop switcher so the idea made sense. So much better tho! Also, you can assign control of parameter to snapshots automatically if you simple push it's knob while turning it at the same time. Brackets pop up, no menus. Cool right!?

How do you install on the Helix?

Richie great video. I am considering purchasing one of these for the exact reasons you specified...i use an m13 currently and can't deal with the slight delay in preset and channel switching....but i digress...herein lies my question....when you are in snapshots can you adjust the volume to be higher on certain snapshots vs others...i.e. can you boost the volume in your "lead" snapshot so it's louder than the others. That would be extremely useful in a live setting.... thanks.

Go to a venue, and match the loudness during the sound check. No other way of doing this, except at loud volumes. You can assign the output loudness to the snapshots, so you can control how the entire snapshot sounds in terms of loudness. Also it helps to be consistent in your presets -- don't use different amps between your snapshots/presets--just stick to one thing and have variations of your main sound.

Hi Richie, i got the Helix Floor a month ago, and I absolutely love it! I am in need of a mentor to help me understand how to work the device. I need help in setting up snapshots. Only problem is, I feel so lost sometimes. I can make some good sounding presets but when it comes to snapshots, where do I get IRs, setting up an effect to a footswitch. I feel like I'm never going to get it. I'm learning more and more everyday I guess but I really wish I could get a tutor. Alot of these terrms i don't understand, like Sag, Hum, Ripple, BIAs, Cho Rate, Depth Mix Level, stuff like that. I know that it is a huge learning curve. Can you help? Thank you. Stay safe.

I apologize if you've already answered this but when your using snapshots can you set the delay to have spillover in 4 cable method? If so this Headrush unit might be going back to MF. I have an Axis Super Sport btw, great guitar!

Hey Richie, love the vids man! I get my helix in 6 days. In regards to your various guitars and you changing some eq for each of them, do you see any value in 'copying' your snapshot preset and making versions of it for your various guitars so that once you plug a certain axe in, its already tailored to it?

Hey richie fellow staten islander here. Love the tutorials, really helped me with my Helix. Quick question, sometimes I feel the passive guitar pickups don't have enough umph pushing the amps in Helix and sometimes I feel like simple hammer ons and pull offs aren't really carrying unless I really ramp up the distortion. Any recommendations?

I find that differs with whatever model you use. To remedy that, I place an eq in front of the amp and use the level to drive it. I can also use the eq to tailor what goes into the amp. I did that one of my presets to make my axis sound more like a Tele and it worked pretty well.

I'm getting a volume drop whenever I engage the wah pedal - Even if I boost the db setting in the wah, it doesn't seem to make a difference - Any ideas??

weird, I'm not experiencing this. What you could do is set up a gain block right after it and adjust it to balance out the level. Then use the way bypass to also control this block. It's a workaround, but it should do the trick.

hey richie, i tried setting copying your same setup on my helix but i can't seem to get all the amps and effects to fit on there, it seems i'm running out of dsp or something. when i try adding the pitch shifter or another amp they are all in red letters and i cant select them? any ideas

I'm interested in how "Impulse Respones" works? I know nothing about that. Is it hard to get it right? I guess IR's is used to mimic a speaker? Since there's no real speaker involved in this kind of guitar sound? Do you need to find IR's on the internet, to then load them into the Helix-rack/floorboard? Or are there IR's included with the Helix that does the job good?

Can you show how to snapshot a path with a Variax as an acoustic guitar and a path as an electric guitar some I can switch back and forth and blend with a pedal.

    • @RichieCastellano

To do the blend effect, you need both paths. So for example, the Variax magnetics would be assigned to path A and that would be your electric tone. The Variax itself would be assigned to path B with the acoustic sound. Then each path would have a volume pedal on it somewhere. They'd both be assigned to the same expression pedal, except the ranges would be reversed. For example, path A's volume pedal would have a min value of 100% and a max value of 0%, while path B's volume pedal would have a min value of 0% and a max value of 100%. If you did this properly when you raise that expression pedal, the electric guitar would fade out and the acoustic would fade in. I've done this, it's very cool.
If you don't want to burn an expression pedal and would rather just have the acoustic assigned to a button, you can go into controller assignment and assign the variax model parameter to a controller, making the minium value an electric model of your choice and the maximum value the acoustic model of your choice.
I'm not 100% sure on how to implement this with snapshots because I haven't played with snapshots in months. I prefer the presets for what I do, but I'm sure it's do-able. This would be a cool topic for a video. Maybe next time I have a little down-time, I'll try it.

Thanks Richie, With all this talk of Snapshots allowing for a seamless transition I was hoping that route would solve it. I'll try the dual path in one preset and see if it works for my situation.
Keep sending us ideas for this monster!
