I love her so much! This performance is one of my personal favorites on Idol ever. I wish she wasn't voted out so early on the competition... I really wanted to hear her do "Alone" on the big stage... I still can't believe Castro got to the TOP 4 and she got to be sixth!
This is a really strong performance. Crazy On You is a really rangy be-otch of a song. Those big notes are so strong and controlled...sweet, this one is going on the iPod for sure.
Carly Smithson is quite simple a great talent and this is a showstopper here. She says that she is going to sing this on the Idols Live Tour this summer, which should be exciting for fans of Heart's music.

I keep coming back to watch this excellent video. It is definately the performance of the whole series. Can't believe Carly didn't make it to the final! I am English and 47 years old and will definately be buying Carly's album if she produces more excellent covers like this one. By the way, it was far better than the original. Happy that David Cook won as David Archuleta is not contemporary enough. He sounds just like Neil Sedaka, but that was about 30 years ago!!
That is really the challenge on a karaoke show like American Idol. The contestant must find a way to "make it their own" without destroying the basic underpinnings of the song. I think that Carly really shined in that area, and of course, it went totally unmentioned by the three "judges" who were worried about her wardrobe and microphone technique rather than her singing. After seeing the tour I realize that she was basically a ringer, a pro, that was using the show for exposure. Amazing!
Ann Wilson has sung this song a number of ways over the years. Carly sang this song differently on tour, differently than this Idol show version, but it still basically aped the slow acappella opening that Ann Wilson has done in the past..
Even when she covers material that I don't care for- I can't help but enjoy her performances due to her voice. Carly Smithson traveled rather far in this year's competition but she still should have advanced further.
I was never a big Heart fan but Smithson won me over with her cover of this song. I hope the girl wins and I could care less about her prior experience in the music industry.

Yep. same here. I didn't really, I wasn't a big fan in the first semifinal round. Then this week I recognized that ok she's as good as the rest, although I still wasn't fully up there, until the next week and week after especially when she sang Come Together is when I became a fan.
YES.This was beautiful. Not just her singing voice but her voice and vocalization is melodious beautiful. Transcendant. Maybe happy she's out - I think the way she was mistreated would have got worse if she stayed and she might have just been humiliated.

@liliodine I am a huge fan of both Ann Wilson and Pat Benatar and I am glad that people do their songs on Idol. This was a great performance as was Carrie Underwood singing Alone and Brooke White singing Love is a Battlefield. They don't have to be as good as the original they just need to be good.

I remember the Top 20 week when Carly performed this old Heart song on American Idol The media hype machine and the judges had built her up as being "a ringer", and whatnot, and I still wasn't buying it. This performance pretty much changed my perception of Ms Smithson.
Yes, Heart sang this song. It is was the bands debut single from the Dreamboat Annie album, which was released in 1976. Carly really sings the crap out of this song, it is sort of like an early Ann Wilson flashback for me.
Terrific --she took on a great song by a legendary singer and pulled it off. One of the top 2 or 3 performances all season, and her best by far, I think. I still prefer Syesha's consistency and versatility a bit more, but those two, D-Cook and maybe Michael were the true talents this season.

Holy Crap...I never saw this performance! That girl has an incredible voice and sang this song quite well! It's not easy to sing ANY Ann Wilson or Heart song. I've never heard anyone sing a Heart song like this before - not Carry, not Fergie and especially not Celiene! I can't believe Simon didn't think it was as awesome as it was. Too bad she got voted off. I think she's so much better more talented than any of the other contestants last season. I would have loved to have heard more from her!

Carly did great! She's no Ann Wilson, OF COURSE, but she was amazing in this song. She's a huge fan of Heart, and as a HeartMonger myself, I can relate to her. I sing all the songs, not to try to beat Ann (impossible task, by the way), but to express my admiration for her. I'm guessing Carly did the same when she saw this opportunity.
I love the way she belts this song out, most people can't even dream of pulling this Heart stuff off. Carly you should really win this show!
