I knew that also . I remember Anthony talking about it in his Biography book ,which I owned in hardcover but foolishly loaned to a friend and never saw it again , and haven't heard from the dude in years. I have to find another used copy somewhere ,as it is a really good read !
@@MIKE-TYTHON when you look only it's about 3-4k, but if I remember correctly Kiedis wrote in this biography that John once showed up in the studio with a 30k white falcon, so maybe the one he has is a very special one. Or my memory is really wrong, which is also a strong possbility
About the 1962 Strat: Dave Lee, who worked as John’s guitar tech on tour from 1998 to 2007, argues that they were just basic Fender pickups found in the American Standard Stratocasters. I remember reading that and realizing John was wrong in that interview (I never told him). We were experimenting with a number of different pickups at the time. And he must’ve gotten confused. The actual pickups we settled on (and John never knew this) were stock, brand new, Fender Strat pickups. [JF Effects Interviews: Dave Lee (Guitar Tech)] I'm working on my own 1962 replica btw😎
4:21 That guitar John gave to his “at the time” girlfriend Emily Kokal. She’s in a band called Warpaint. And it’s her mind guitar. They are actually pretty good and John produced some of their records.
Fun fact, Dave Lee, John's guitar tech, said that John was confused about the Seymour Duncan pickups. They needed to replace the vintage pickups and tested out a few different options, including the Duncan's. They actually settled on Fender stock pickups from the 2000s. 👍
Here's the quote: In Guitarist Magazine, june 2003, you said you tried to convince John to play Fender's replicas of its old models, but he liked the "life" that his old instruments had. Besides the original tuning pegs (replaced by Klusons) and straplocks (replaced by Schallers), is there any other modification that you made in the guitars? He said in a interview that he replaced his '62 Strat pickups for Seymour Duncans SSL-1 (like in his '55 Strat). Is there anything else besides that? When did that occured? "I remember reading that and realizing John was wrong in that interview (I never told him). We were experimenting with a number of different pickups at the time. And he must've gotten confused. The actual pickups we settled on (and John never knew this) were stock, brand new, Fender Strat pickups. The same ones Fender was putting in their brand new American Fender Strats at the time (I'll bet you weren't expecting that)."
I recently discovered that John has more than one( possible 3) 1962 sunburst strats by looking at live performances. He likes to play some softer songs or warm-up on the other 2. And no. John doesn't have ssl-1 pickups in any guitar according to Dave Lee- his guitar tech back then and man who takes care of all this guitars now.
Actually he didnt swap them strat pickups for ss1's. There was some sort of confusion when it was stated at the time but Johns tech verified that theyre actually Fender pickups.
John and his guitar techs were messing around with different pickups and such, and the ones John chose were the '98-'99 American Standards. For years JF thought these were SSL-1's but Dave later said that John was incorrect.
I played a lot of Vintage strats and yea, I agree - 1962s are also my fav. Even better than the ones of the 50s. One day I m gonna get one. Hopefully....
the jaguar in the “Under the Bridge” was actually a Sherwood green finished jaguar. I agree it looks very sea foam green due to the lighting. people also confuse it with his lake placid jaguar that (from most sources i’ve read) burned in the house fire. Id kill for a lake placid or sherwood jag.
The Yamaha SG 2000 is probably one of the best sounding electric guitars one can get. Pair it with a Mesa Boogie Mark 1 or a Mesa Boogie with an Altec speaker and you can get one heck of a tone.
It's hard to find quality content but I think this totally is... Even if it's a top 10 list, you can notice you've put effort into this, so great video, I'm subscribing :D
I'm pretty sure the 1962 strat is actually Chad Smith's. in an interview with Josh Klinghoffer's gear guy he showed the same guitar and stated that Chad would always lend it to them for touring
That under the bridge Jaguar isn't seafoam green. I'm pretty confident in saying its ocean turquoise metallic, there is a chance its aged lake placid blue as well cause that goes greeny/turquoise. I've heard some people say its sherwood green but sherwood green is a proper dark green colour.
i read in interview with johns tech that they didnt actually use SSL1s, john got confused. he said they used whatever the newest noiseless pickups were at the time
John used a guitar that looked a lot like that Gretsch White Falcon on stage at a concert at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas. And a Sunburst Strat that looked a whole lot like your number one guitar in the video. I was in the third row center.
The myth of SSL-1 was debunked by his guitar tech Dave Lee. Quote: "I remember reading that and realizing John was wrong in that interview (I never told him). We were experimenting with a number of different pickups at the time. And he must've gotten confused. The actual pickups we settled on (and John never knew this) were stock, brand new, Fender Strat pickups. The same ones Fender was putting in their brand new American Fender Strats at the time (I'll bet you weren't expecting that)." Still SSL-1 is a great set of pickups.
Great video. I don’t expect to reply to this considering the video is seven years old, but did he use the Jaguar to record under the bridge in the studio or is it a Stratocaster? Can’t seem to find that anywhere…
hey there ! for the last fender model that is mentionned did you mean the Stratocaster did all his way to now,or is it a reissue ? thanks to have dug up the nice information !
I could have missed it but I'm surprised the Gretsch White Falcon isn't on here considering both Californication and Otherside were written and performed on it, maybe not an iconic guitar relative to his use of it but definitely one of the most iconic guitars in the world generally, either way, I enjoyed the video, good job!
1966 Sherwood Green Jaguar; the bound neck with dot fret markers gives the year away. The color is harder to make, at a quick glance you'd think oxidized Lake Placid Blue, but most likely Sherwood Green.
Wrong info on the 62 strat. According to dave lee, his guitar tech, the pickups installed on that strat were just fender standard, John didn’t know about this in a long time and the thought they were SD pickups.
He gave his white Jaguar to Emily Kokal of Warpaint, its her main guitar. Pretty sure the red mustang Theresa Wayman uses was John's aswell but not sure.
Big question, did he ever use the Jags on an actual recording? I had read that he did actually use it on Under The Bridge, but I sounds like the neck pickup of a Strat to me.
He used it to record Around the World. Switches the tone circuit on verse/chorus. He did this at Woodstock (the only time I've seen him play a Jag live), but the second volume circuit was a 0, so he completely cut out. His tech had to run on stage to switch it. I think that stopped him using it live
I mean to be fair, with EQ adjustment a jaguar neck pickup and strat neck pickup are going to be basically indistinguishable. For that particular song ive tried the into out with a jag neck and a strat neck out of curiosity both got the sound just fine, the strat was a bit brighter on the same setting but i found bringing the tone knob down a touch made it pretty equal field. Its also worth noteing jaguars are kind of all over the place, some sound very bright borderline shrill like a telecaster, some are actually very warm sounding. The japanese ones tend to be a bit bright by default.
It was sold for drug money. He walked into guitar center disheveled and wearing no shoes and sold it for a pittance. The person who worked at guitar center actually sold it to them and the Hard Rock asked if he could sign a card to place with it.
Nice Video, but one more Mistake. In the video of Under the brigde, he´s playing a 1966 Fender Jazzmaster in sherwood green, not a Fender Jaguar in sea foam green.
Just because he plays a guitar in a video that doesn't mean he owns it. The toronado in the Can't Stop video for example was just a guitar given to him to play because the director liked the colour.
Love these vids! Any chance you could try, Metallica's James Hetfield/Kirk Hammett? (Cliche I know). Don't think anyone on here has picked up on there rig that well without jumping straight to Mesa and ESP Guitars... Cheers!

that iconic strat was gift from Kiedis
Crazy never knew that idk how I got to this video but lil pieces of info like that is so interesting vs the bigger pictures.

Anthony bought him the 62
that white falcon is something to die for

Very cool. Thanks for sharing.
Indeed. it is actually his '54/'55 that has the SSL-1s installed.
Which pickups are those fenders? Fat 50s?
John frusciante ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

He bought his sunburst strat with seymour already in them. He did not swap them out.
He had 2 tele's one with the fender F spaghetti logo on the scratchplate and one without and I think thats where the two ages come from.
Cool video! Soooo... Josh Homme next?
Cool video all this time I thought he was using a Ibanez artist and not a Yamaha sg u learn something everyday if ur lucky
The under the bridge jaguar was Sherwood Green
not was seymour Duncan, Dave Lee (guitar technician of john) said that was de fender caps pattern
The one he uses in the video for "under the bridge" is ocean turquoise, not seafoam green!

mr. frusciante used a fender strat on the scar tissue vid. not a tele.
Which guitar did he play on Niandra LaDes?
do josh klinghofer who is now the guitarist of the red hot chili peppers
Josh sure does have an interesting collection!
Johns 62' is a mexican strat since it only has 21 frets?
Resently I have heard that the Pickups of the Fender Stratocaster from 1962 where origninal Pickups, not the Seymour.
this velvet glove
The 1963 tele was hij back up He giften it to Josh the 1965 was his main tele
4:30. Its not seafoam green but a sherwood green Jaguar.
Thanks man, i really love your content.
To clear-up the question to the number ten guitar, it was an Ibanez performance custom with nude photos all over it.
He also used the Blue Jaguar on the Under the Bridge official clip.
That Red Jaguar. Hot damn...
Though, I'm pretty sure his blue Jaguar is Lake Placid Blue Jaguard ratgr than the sea foam, am I wrong?
I think it was the Sherwood Green Jag.
It's far from Sherwood Green
It’s lake placid blue and the clear coat has yellowed giving it a green tint. Yellow+blue=green
Do a video on Jack White's white stripes rig
